Montego Bay in March: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and Prices

Four figures decide a March trip to Montego Bay: an average high of 82.8°F, an average low of 71.1°F, 2.18 inches of rain for the month, and a sea surface running 82.6°F. Together they add up to what most travelers fly south for in late winter, which is warm water and rain that crosses rather than settles. April warms the sea further and brings 3.53 inches with it. March runs 1.7 degrees cooler by day and 1.35 inches drier, and that trade is the whole argument for these four weeks.

March also sits outside the Atlantic hurricane season, dated June 1 to November 30 by NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, so storm-tracking belongs to another page. What the month asks in return is modest: a long-sleeved layer after dark, tolerance for a shower that soaks the loungers and moves on, and the acceptance that on March 15 the light is gone by about 6:30 p.m.

March gives you 82.8°F afternoons and an 82.6°F sea for fewer than six wet days, and takes back an evening that goes dark at 6:22 p.m.

Go for: swimming at 82.6°F without a second thought, a Rose Hall day tour at US$30, and rafting the Martha Brae at US$99 on a day with no afternoon washout built in.

Think twice before: planning around bargain rates we cannot verify. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Montego Bay, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive.

Every figure here carries its source, and two of them need a caveat before you read any further. The March normals are a model reanalysis for a grid cell, not a reading from a thermometer at Sangster International. The sea temperature is an average of daily maxima rather than of whole days. Both caveats are repeated where the numbers are used. Ticket prices come from the operators’ own sites, read in September 2026, and the room tax comes from the government’s published scale.

The normals below come from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis for 1991-2020, computed on the grid cell at 18.48° N, 77.89° W. That is a modeled cell rather than an airport station record, and the two instruments diverge most on the overnight low, so read 71.1°F as an indication and 82.8°F as the solid half of the pair. Against February’s 81.7°F and April’s 84.5°F, March sits one notch up the ramp, with 2.18 inches of rain across the month.

Measurable rain falls on 5.9 days in an average March, which works out to roughly one day in five. Only 0.1 day reaches a full inch, so a March that delivers a genuine soaking is about a one-in-ten March. In a real day that reads as a shower crossing the bay, twenty minutes under cover, and a beach that dries before you do. Plans needing three straight dry hours, a raft trip or a garden tour, usually get them.

Nights settle near 71.1°F, which is 11.7 degrees below the afternoon. Nobody is reaching for a coat, but a dinner terrace with the breeze off the water argues for a long-sleeved layer in the bag, and a wrap for anyone who feels air conditioning. The rest of the bag is covered in what to pack for Jamaica.

On March 15 the sun rises at 6:17 a.m. and sets at 6:22 p.m., giving 12 hours 05 minutes of daylight. That puts a hard edge on the beach day. Doctor’s Cave runs its customer service desk until 5:30 p.m., about fifty minutes before the sun goes, and Rose Hall’s Haunted Night Tour starts at 6:30 p.m., eight minutes after sunset and entirely in the dark.

Can you swim in Montego Bay in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea off Montego Bay averages 82.6°F in March, from Open-Meteo’s Marine API over 2015 to 2024. The fine print matters: that number is the mean of daily maxima, a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would give, so it describes the warmest part of the day rather than the water you meet at dawn. February’s equivalent reading is 81.1°F and April’s is 84.1°F.

At that temperature nobody stands at the waterline negotiating with themselves. Children stay in until they are called out, snorkeling runs to an hour without shivering, and the first step in produces no shock at all. Doctor’s Cave Beach, on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, charges US$8 for visitors aged 12 and over and US$4 for children under 12, with the desk open every day from 08:30 to 17:30.

Wind and swell are the gap in our reading. We found no wind or wave series for this stretch of coast that we could cite month by month, so we give no numbers and no claim about calm mornings. The one thing the calendar settles is the storm question: the Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, with March nowhere near it.

How busy is Montego Bay in March? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

March falls in the northern winter stretch and outside hurricane season, and that much is calendar rather than speculation. Past it, we found no occupancy series and no month-by-month room-rate series for Montego Bay, so we name no month the year’s cheapest and no month its most expensive. The island-wide seasonal picture lives in the best-time verdict, and the budget lines in what a Jamaica trip costs.

How many weeks ahead to book is the question we cannot answer with a number, because no fare curve or rate series came back to us. The operating calendar is fixed, though, and it does real work. Rose Hall’s Day and Garden Tour runs Monday to Saturday, 09:15 to 16:00, and its night tour only Wednesday to Saturday, so a Sunday-to-Tuesday trip loses the evening version. Rafting the Martha Brae takes guests in order of arrival and sells no line-skipping, so a reservation buys a date and nothing more. Flights move first: flights from the US.

Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per night on each occupied room and scaled to the property, not to the traveler: US$1 for a property of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 for 51 to 100, US$4 for 101 rooms and up, complimentary rooms included. Next to European city tourist taxes charged per person, that is small change. A separate fee applies to each arriving air passenger whose trip starts abroad, announced at US$20 with effect from August 1, 2012. We could not reconfirm that amount on a current government page, so it carries its 2012 date.

Rafting the Martha Brae costs US$99 per visitor, or J$13,000 for Jamaicans with valid local ID, and runs about an hour and a quarter over three miles of river. That is the single biggest discretionary ticket in a March week here, and the one purchase that buys a different day rather than a plusher version of the same one. The gate opens 09:00 to 16:00 every day, public holidays included, and takes major cards. Against it, a full beach day at Doctor’s Cave costs US$8.

March is built for the all-day outing. With 5.9 wet days against April’s 9.9, a plan that puts you on a river, on a road and back on a beach between breakfast and sunset has room to absorb one shower without collapsing. February is drier still at 3.8 wet days, but its sea reads 81.1°F, a degree and a half below March. Nothing on the calendar competes with a storm watch either, the season being months away.

Doctor’s Cave Beach sits on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard and charges US$8 for visitors aged 12 and over, US$4 under 12, with the desk open Monday to Sunday from 08:30 to 17:30. Rose Hall Great House runs its Day and Garden Tour at US$30 per adult, Monday to Saturday from 09:15 to 16:00, each tour lasting 45 minutes to an hour, with a Haunted Night Tour at US$35 on Wednesday to Saturday evenings. Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy is the odd one out, a place where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle.

Air temperature moves faster across these weeks than water does. The sea reads 81.1°F in February, 82.6°F in March and 84.1°F in April, a degree and a half a month, while the rain column more than doubles over the same span, from 1.65 to 3.53 inches. The rafting operator ties the length of the ride to the state of the water, and March follows February’s 1.65 inches. Afternoons at 82.8°F falling to 71.1°F overnight are what make a 6:30 p.m. outdoor tour pleasant instead of sticky.

We found no free-admission day and no dated March event we could verify at source, so we list none. Rocklands publishes no price we could read either. Three resale sites quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket, which is why we quote none of them: carry cash and ask at the gate. The rest of the island’s greatest hits, with their own tickets, sit in things to do in Jamaica.

Montego Bay in March: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts at 8:30 a.m., when Doctor’s Cave opens its desk: US$8 for anyone 12 and over, US$4 below, water at 82.6°F, and three hours before the sun is directly overhead. Lunch off the beach, then the Rose Hall Great House Day and Garden Tour at US$30, 45 minutes to an hour, timed to land well inside the 16:00 close. That leaves the 6:22 p.m. sunset unspoken for and a dinner terrace at the cooler end of the day’s 11.7-degree swing.

Day two goes to the river. The Martha Brae gate opens at 09:00, the ride covers about three miles in an hour and a quarter, and guests are processed in order of arrival, so leaving early beats booking. Anchovy and the streamertails fill the afternoon, with cash in hand. If the shower that falls on 5.9 days this month lands on yours, the day moves indoors at small cost: the great house tour runs to 16:00 Monday to Saturday, and the Haunted Night Tour takes 18:30 to 20:30, Wednesday to Saturday, at US$35.

Montego Bay in March vs February and April

Measure February March April
Average high 81.7°F 82.8°F 84.5°F
Average low 70.8°F 71.1°F 72.5°F
Rain for the month 1.65 in 2.18 in 3.53 in
Days at 0.10 in or more 3.8 5.9 9.9
Sea surface 81.1°F 82.6°F 84.1°F

All five rows come from the same reanalysis and the same marine series, over the same periods, so the comparison is like for like. Daytime warmth climbs 1.1 degrees from February to March and another 1.7 into April. The sea climbs in even steps of a degree and a half. Rain is the row that breaks the pattern: 1.65 inches on 3.8 wet days in February, 2.18 on 5.9 in March, then 3.53 on 9.9 days in April.

Shift four weeks back to February and you buy two fewer wet days, paying for them with water a degree and a half cooler and evenings that grow dark earlier still. Shift four weeks forward and April hands over an 84.1°F sea, the warmest of the three, along with four more days of measurable rain than March and a real chance of losing an afternoon. March is the middle term, and the middle term here is the generous one.

Is March a good time to visit Montego Bay?

For a swimmer, yes without hesitation: 82.6°F water, 5.9 wet days, no storm season on the calendar. Anyone whose week is built around long outings inland will also find the odds good, since one shower in five days rarely eats a whole day. The traveler who should hesitate is the one who wants the driest possible stretch and will trade water temperature for it, or the one who needs long evenings, because the light stops at 6:22 p.m.

If dryness is the priority, February is the month to take: 1.65 inches, 3.8 wet days, and a sea at 81.1°F that still swims perfectly well. If maximum warmth wins, April is the answer, at 84.5°F by day and 84.1°F in the water, with 9.9 wet days as the invoice. Choosing between Montego Bay and the other end of the island is a separate question, handled in Montego Bay vs Negril.

What March alone puts on the table is a sea already up to 82.6°F while the rain column still reads 2.18 inches, four wet days short of April’s.

The last word

Build the week around the Wednesday-to-Saturday night tour if you want it, since 18:30 is full dark in mid-March and US$35 buys two hours of it. One piece of arrival admin worth knowing before the taxi line: only JUTA and JCAL are authorized at Sangster International, both working from a single Authorised Airport Taxi desk outside the Customs exit, and the airport publishes no fare table, so the rate is quoted at that desk. In town, a licensed taxi carries a red PPV plate, a roof globe reading Taxi and a checked color code 10 cm high.
