Montego Bay in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and What Things Cost

Montego Bay in April averages 84.5°F by day, 72.5°F at night, and 3.53 inches of rain over roughly ten wet days. The water off the Hip Strip reads 84.1°F, warm enough that nobody stands at the edge deliberating. Six weeks later the same coast takes 8.48 inches across 18.4 wet days, which is the shape of the year April stands in front of.

What the month costs is a separate question from what it feels like. Jamaica’s room tax is charged per night on the room and scaled to the size of the property, from US$1 to US$4, and the beach most visitors have in mind charges US$8 at the gate. Both figures are published by the people who collect them, and both are below what a first-timer braces for.

April pairs an 84.1°F sea with about a third of May’s rain and sits outside hurricane season, so the month’s real variable is heat, not storms.

Go for: swimming without hesitation, a river raft that runs daily from 09:00, and a great-house tour that starts as the sun goes down.

Think twice before: booking a Sunday-to-Tuesday stay if the Rose Hall night tour matters, since it runs Wednesday to Saturday only, 18:30 to 20:30.

The Atlantic hurricane season, in the NOAA National Hurricane Center definition, runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. April falls outside it, which takes the storm question off the table for anyone who has read about a fall booking in Jamaica and leaves rain, heat and the price of a transfer as the things left to weigh.

Montego Bay weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days

Average low 72.5°F
Rainfall 3.53 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 9.9
Days with 1 in or more 0.2
Sea surface, mean of daily highs (2015-2024) 84.1°F

Every figure here comes from the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis served by Open-Meteo, 1991 to 2020, computed for the grid cell at 18.4762° N, 77.8939° W. That is a model’s reconstruction of the atmosphere over the bay rather than a thermometer standing at Sangster, and on overnight lows the two methods can differ by a few degrees. Read 84.5°F and 72.5°F as the center of a range.

Measurable rain falls on 9.9 days in an average April, which works out to one day in three. Only 0.2 of a day reaches a full inch, so a genuine soaking turns up about one April in five. Spread 3.53 inches across ten wet days and the typical wet day is a third of an inch: a shower that darkens an hour of the afternoon and leaves the rest of the day intact.

Twelve degrees separate the average high from the average low, and the drop arrives after sunset rather than easing in through the evening. One light long-sleeve layer covers boat decks and open-air dinners. Beyond that, a 72.5°F night asks nothing of a suitcase, and our packing guide handles the parts of the island where altitude changes that.

April 15 gives 12 hours 37 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 5:53 a.m. and sunset at 6:29 p.m. on the local clock. Dusk is short at this latitude, so 6:30 marks the practical end of an outdoor afternoon. Counting from the beach’s 17:30 close, that leaves about an hour of daylight to get somewhere and sit down.

Can you swim in Montego Bay in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s marine model puts the surface off Montego Bay at 84.1°F in April, averaged over 2015 to 2024. The figure carries a condition worth knowing: it is the mean of daily maxima rather than a 24-hour mean, so it runs a shade warm against tables built the other way. Take 84.1°F as the afternoon number and expect slightly less at seven in the morning.

In practice that is water nobody negotiates with. No hesitation at the edge, no shivering after twenty minutes, and children who have to be called out instead of coaxed in. Snorkeling stops being limited by cold and starts being limited by sunburn. Doctor’s Cave Beach opens at 08:30 and its customer service runs to 17:30, nine hours of access for a US$8 adult ticket.

Wind and swell are where we come up short: we could not verify figures for April off this coast, so we quote none. The rain record at least bounds the question, with 0.2 of a day in an average April reaching a full inch, roughly one April in five carrying a soaking day. And the season that churns this water for a week at a time does not open until June 1.

Montego Bay in April: crowds, room tax and the arrival fee

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate table for Montego Bay, so we crown no month the expensive one. The calendar is firmer ground. April sits outside the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season and on the dry side of the year’s rain curve, with 3.53 inches against the 8.48 that fall in May. Airline pricing and school-break traffic are real, and we could not read either for this month.

How far ahead April rooms fill is another thing we could not verify, so no number of weeks appears. Two dates do lock, and both are published by the operators. Rose Hall Great House runs its Haunted Night Tour Wednesday to Saturday only, 18:30 to 20:30, so a Sunday-to-Tuesday stay misses it. Rafting the Martha Brae processes guests in order of arrival, with no queue-jumping by booking, which makes the 09:00 opening the only reservation that counts.

Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per occupied room per night and scaled to the property, not to you: US$1 at a place of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 from 51 to 100, US$4 at 101 rooms and above. Complimentary rooms attract it too. Separately, the government announced a US$20 fee on each arriving air passenger whose trip begins abroad, effective August 1, 2012. We could not reconfirm that amount on a current government page, so it keeps its 2012 date.

The one line worth paying up for in April is where you sleep. A bed within walking distance of Jimmy Cliff Boulevard puts you on the sand at 08:30 and back indoors before the 84.5°F afternoon, which no amount of transfer money buys back later in the day. Two companies are authorized at the airport, JUTA and JCAL, sharing a single desk just outside the Customs exit. The airport publishes no fare table, so ask for the rate at that desk (more on transfers).

Things to do in Montego Bay in April: Doctor’s Cave Beach, Rose Hall and the Martha Brae

April lets the two halves of a Montego Bay trip share one week. Measurable rain falls on 9.9 days against May’s 18.4, so a river morning and a beach afternoon rarely collide with the same shower. The sea reads 84.1°F, up from March’s 82.6, and daytime air has climbed to 84.5°F from 82.8. Neither jump is dramatic on paper, and both show up in the same swim.

Doctor’s Cave Beach, on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, charges US$8 for anyone 12 and over and US$4 for children under 12, with customer service every day from 08:30 to 17:30. East of town, Rafting the Martha Brae costs US$99 for visitors, or J$13,000 for Jamaicans holding valid local ID, and covers three miles of river in about an hour and a quarter depending on the water. It runs 09:00 to 16:00 daily, public holidays included, and takes all major cards.

Rose Hall Great House prices its Day and Garden Tour at US$30 per adult, Monday to Saturday between 09:15 and 16:00, and its Haunted Night Tour at US$35, Wednesday to Saturday from 18:30 to 20:30. Each runs 45 minutes to an hour. Mid-April times that night tour precisely: the sun sets at 6:29 p.m. on the 15th, one minute before the 18:30 start, so the walk begins in the last of the light and ends in full dark.

Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle, publishes no price we could read at source. Three resale sites quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket, so we print none of them: carry cash and ask at the gate. We could not verify any free-admission day in April at these sites either. What the month hands over at no charge is the evening light, usable until roughly 6:30.

Montego Bay in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts ahead of the heat. Sunrise falls at 5:53 a.m. in mid-April, and Doctor’s Cave opens at 08:30 for US$8, which buys the calmest two hours the sand gets. Be out of the sun by noon. Rose Hall’s Day and Garden Tour fills the afternoon at US$30, 45 minutes to an hour, with entries stopping at the 16:00 close. Between Wednesday and Saturday, swap it for the 18:30 Haunted Night Tour at US$35 and keep the afternoon for a nap.

Day two heads east to the Martha Brae for the 09:00 opening, because guests are taken in order of arrival and no booking moves anyone up the line. The raft covers three miles in about an hour and a quarter, and the operator ties the ride to the state of the water, so heavy overnight rain is the one thing that rewrites the morning. Roughly one April day in three records at least 0.10 inch: on that day, Rose Hall’s interiors and the Anchovy sanctuary both absorb an afternoon.

Montego Bay in April vs March and May

March April May
Average high 82.8°F 84.5°F 85.1°F
Average low 71.1°F 72.5°F 74.3°F
Rainfall 2.18 in 3.53 in 8.48 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 5.9 9.9 18.4
Sea surface, mean of daily highs (2015-2024) 82.6°F 84.1°F 86.1°F

March is the drier month by a wide margin, 2.18 inches over 5.9 wet days against April’s 3.53 inches over 9.9. May reverses the picture at 8.48 inches over 18.4 days, rain on three days in five. Air temperature barely moves across the three, from 82.8°F to 84.5°F to 85.1°F. The water does move, climbing 82.6°F, 84.1°F, 86.1°F, all three read as the mean of daily highs.

Moving four weeks earlier buys near-certainty of dry days and gives up a degree and a half of sea plus a cooler 71.1°F night. Moving four weeks later buys the warmest water of the three at 86.1°F and costs almost five extra inches of rain and eight more wet days. The full tables sit on the March page and the May page.

Is April a good time to visit Montego Bay?

Yes for swimmers. Water at 84.1°F with 9.9 wet days is the combination most people picture when they book Jamaica, and April falls outside hurricane season, so nothing structural works against the trip. No if the schedule has no slack: rain on one day in three will land on something, so leave one afternoon unbooked and keep the raft morning movable.

When certainty matters more than water temperature, take March instead. It records 5.9 days with measurable rain against April’s 9.9, for a sea only a degree and a half cooler at 82.6°F and days at 82.8°F. That trade suits anyone traveling with a fixed itinerary or a single free afternoon, and it gives up very little comfort to get it. Our island-wide calendar sets the same choice against the other nine months.

Set against its two neighbors, April is the only one that pairs a sea above 84°F with fewer than ten wet days, and it does so on 12 hours 37 minutes of daylight.

The last word

Decide on the water. If 84.1°F is the reason for the ticket, April delivers it with roughly a third of May’s rain, and the only hard date to protect is the Wednesday-to-Saturday window at Rose Hall. One thing to sort out before the first ride into town: Jamaica’s Transport Authority identifies a licensed public passenger vehicle by five marks, a red PPV plate, a roof globe reading Taxi, the route printed on a route taxi’s front doors, a checked color code 10 cm high in 2.5 cm squares, and a badged driver carrying the Driver Identification Card. Check more than the plate, since the regulator’s own page prints no letter prefix.
