MONTEGO BAY · JULY · 18.5° N
Montego Bay in July averages a high of 87.1°F and a low of 76.6°F, with 5.17 inches of rain spread across the month. The sea off the beaches reads 86.4°F. Nothing in those numbers argues against a beach week, and nothing in them is gentle at two in the afternoon. Walking, driving and great-house tours belong to the hours before eleven and after four.
July also sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which NOAA runs from June 1 to November 30, peaking on September 10 with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. That places July on the quiet shoulder of the curve rather than outside it. Storm-season booking rules are in our hurricane-season guide, and the twelve-month comparison is in the best-time guide.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · MONTEGO BAY · JULY
July gives Montego Bay the fewest wet days of the three summer months, an 86.4°F sea and 13 hours 10 minutes of daylight, at the price of 87.1°F afternoons that push everything on land to either end of the day.
AVERAGE HIGH 87.1°F · SEA 86.4°F · 14.9 WET DAYS · SUNSET 6:52 P.M.
Go for: swimming at any hour, Doctor’s Cave at US$8, and three miles of the Martha Brae at US$99 in about 75 minutes.
Think twice before: planning long midday walking, and before treating July as storm-free: the Atlantic season opened June 1 and runs to November 30.

Arrivals come through Sangster International, where two taxi companies are authorized, JUTA and JCAL, sharing a single authorized airport taxi desk just outside the Customs exit. The airport publishes no fare table for them. Ask for the rate at that desk, because the figures circulating on booking sites are not the operators’. Our transfer guide covers the alternatives.

The temperature and rainfall figures here come from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 normals computed for the grid cell at 18.4762° N, 77.8939° W. That is a model grid box, not a thermometer at Sangster, and the distinction matters: station records and reanalysis disagree most on overnight lows. Read 87.1°F and 76.6°F as the shape of a July day, not as a reading anyone took at the airport fence.
Rain reaches 0.10 inch on 14.9 days in an average July, just under one day in two, and the month’s 5.17 inches work out to roughly a third of an inch on a wet day. Only 0.5 day records a full inch, so a genuine soaking lands in about one July in two. What that describes is a shower long enough to clear a terrace, not a day written off, and it is the reason a rigid hour-by-hour plan is the wrong tool for the month.
The day moves 10.5°F between its high and its low, so nothing cools off after dark. Pack for humidity rather than for a temperature drop: a dry second shirt for the evening, sleeves for air-conditioned dining rooms and the stone interior of a great house, and shoes you can soak and wear again. Our packing list has the full kit.
July 15 carries 13 hours 10 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 5:42 a.m. and sunset at 6:52 p.m., Jamaica holding UTC minus five all year with no clock change. The usable edge is at the back of the day. Rose Hall’s Haunted Night Tour starts at 6:30 p.m., twenty-two minutes before the sun goes, so the approach to the house happens in the last light and the rest of it in the dark.
Can you swim in Montego Bay in July? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Montego Bay averages 86.4°F in July, taken as the mean of daily maxima across 2015 to 2024 from the Open-Meteo Marine API. The framing changes the number: a mean of daily peaks runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average, so tables built on round-the-clock readings will publish something slightly lower for the same month, and neither figure is wrong.
At that temperature there is no entry shock and no standing about at waist depth. The daytime water sits 9.8°F above the month’s average overnight low, which is why the first swim of the morning feels warmer than the air on the sand. Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard charges US$8 for anyone aged 12 and over and US$4 for children under 12, with its customer service running 08:30 to 17:30, Monday through Sunday.
On wind and swell we have nothing to give: we found no verified wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so we publish no figures and make no claim about calm mornings. The storm calendar is dated, though. July falls inside the June 1 to November 30 season and ahead of the mid-August to mid-October stretch that NOAA identifies as the most active part of it.
How busy is Montego Bay in July? Crowds, prices and the room tax
Where July lands in the annual price cycle is a question we cannot answer with numbers. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Montego Bay, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can price are the fixed things, and they do not move with the season: US$8 at Doctor’s Cave, US$30 for the Rose Hall day tour, US$99 on the Martha Brae, the same figures in July as in February.
Booking lead times are the same gap in our sources. We could not verify how far ahead July rooms fill, so we name no number of weeks. Two operators publish their own rules, and the rules cut opposite ways. Rafting the Martha Brae processes guests in order of arrival, with no queue-jumping by booking, so turning up near the 09:00 opening beats any reservation. Rose Hall runs on fixed slots instead, 09:15 to 16:00 Monday to Saturday, which is the constraint to plan a day around.
Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per night on each occupied room and scaled to the size of the property rather than to the traveler: US$1 at a property of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 from 51 to 100, US$4 at 101 rooms and above, complimentary rooms included. Tax Administration Jamaica publishes those bands. Against European city taxes billed per person per night, it is a rounding error. Arriving passengers whose trip starts abroad also pay a fee, announced at US$20 with effect from August 1, 2012. We could not reconfirm that amount on a current government page, so the date stays attached to it.
The only upgrade that changes the month is shade and moving water in the middle of the day. US$99 buys three miles of the Martha Brae on a bamboo raft, about an hour and a quarter on the river, cards accepted, open 09:00 to 16:00 every day including public holidays. US$8 buys a beach with staff on duty until 17:30. A sea view or a bigger pool is comfort; it does not change what July does between eleven and four.
Things to do in Montego Bay in July: Doctor’s Cave, Rose Hall and the Martha Brae

Of the three summer months, July is the driest: 5.17 inches against June’s 5.82 and August’s 6.54, and 14.9 wet days against 15.5 and 18.7. That is 3.8 fewer wet days across the month than August, on water only 1.6°F cooler. Add 13 hours 10 minutes of daylight and the day holds a swim, an indoor hour and a tour without anything being squeezed.
Doctor’s Cave Beach is on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, US$8 from age 12, US$4 below it, service desk 08:30 to 17:30 daily. Rose Hall Great House runs its Day and Garden Tour at US$30 per adult, Monday to Saturday, 09:15 to 16:00, lasting 45 minutes to an hour. Rafting the Martha Brae is US$99 for visitors and J$13,000 for Jamaicans with valid local ID, three miles of river, about 75 minutes, daily 09:00 to 16:00.
July changes the air around those places more than the places themselves. The raft trip runs about 75 minutes depending on the state of the water, and the month’s 5.17 inches are what keep the river at working depth. Rose Hall’s last day tour starts at 16:00 and ends around 17:00, leaving close to two hours of daylight before the 6:52 p.m. sunset, enough for the coast road back and a swim on the way.
We found no free-admission day and no dated July event for Montego Bay, so we name none. Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle, publishes no price we could read at source: three travel sites quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket, and we repeat none of them. Bring cash and ask at the gate. The year-round list sits in our things-to-do guide.
Montego Bay in July: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at the water. Sunrise is 5:42 a.m., so the early hours are the pleasant ones; Doctor’s Cave opens its service desk at 08:30 and takes US$8 from age 12, and that first swim is the coolest air you will get all day. Be out of the sun by 11:00 and eat indoors while the reading climbs toward 87.1°F. At 14:30 drive out to Rose Hall for the Day and Garden Tour, US$30, an hour inside thick stone. Dinner comes after the 6:52 p.m. sunset.
Day two belongs to the river. Rafting the Martha Brae opens at 09:00 and takes guests in order of arrival, so an early start is worth more than a reservation: US$99, about 75 minutes, three miles, back in town for a late lunch. If the sky turns, and an inch-plus day arrives in roughly one July in two, move the afternoon to Rose Hall’s Haunted Night Tour, US$35, Wednesday to Saturday, 18:30 to 20:30, which begins 22 minutes before sunset and ends in full dark.
Montego Bay in July vs June and August
| Measure | June | July | August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 86.6°F | 87.1°F | 87.1°F |
| Average low | 76.1°F | 76.6°F | 76.8°F |
| Rainfall | 5.82 in | 5.17 in | 6.54 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 15.5 | 14.9 | 18.7 |
| Sea surface | 86.5°F | 86.4°F | 88.0°F |
Temperature barely separates the three: highs of 86.6, 87.1 and 87.1°F, lows of 76.1, 76.6 and 76.8. Rain does the separating. July takes 0.65 inch and 0.6 of a wet day off June, and 1.37 inches and 3.8 wet days off August. The sea runs the other way, 86.5°F in June, 86.4 in July and 88.0 in August, making August’s water the warmest of the three by 1.6°F.
Shift four weeks back and June costs you almost nothing in heat, adds half an inch of rain and hands back a sea a tenth of a degree warmer, with the storm season only days old. Shift four weeks forward and August pays you 88.0°F water for 18.7 wet days and a calendar that runs into NOAA’s most active stretch, mid-August to mid-October. Our June page carries that month in full.
Is July a good time to visit Montego Bay?
For a swimmer, July is a clear yes: 86.4°F water, 13 hours 10 minutes of daylight and the fewest wet days of the three summer months. For anyone whose trip is built on long midday walking, gardens, hill driving or a string of great houses, it is a no, because 87.1°F with July humidity leaves a narrow working window either side of noon.
If the answer is no, neither neighbor fixes it. June is wetter by 0.65 inch with a sea a tenth of a degree warmer, and August adds 3.8 wet days and the deepest part of the storm calendar. The month worth moving to sits outside this table, and the twelve-month comparison is in our best-time-to-visit guide, with the risk curve in the hurricane-season guide.
Of June, July and August, only July puts the fewest wet days, a sea above 86°F and a sunset after a quarter to seven in the same week.
The last word
Book July for the water and build the land around it: beach at 08:30, Rose Hall at four. One thing to carry into the taxi line: the Transport Authority identifies a licensed public passenger vehicle by five marks, a red PPV plate, a roof globe reading Taxi, route details printed on the front doors of a route taxi, a checked color code 10 centimeters high in 2.5-centimeter squares, black and white for a route taxi and black and yellow for a hackney carriage, and a driver wearing a Transport Authority badge. The regulator prints no letter prefix, so the plate alone is not the test.
