Montego Bay in August: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and What Things Cost

August in Montego Bay runs an average high of 87.1°F and an average low of 76.8°F, with 6.54 inches of rain spread across 18.7 days that record at least a tenth of an inch. The sea off the bay averages 88.0°F. Those four numbers decide most of what the month hands you: swimming without a moment’s hesitation at the water’s edge, nearly thirteen hours of daylight, and a fair chance of getting wet on land at some point in any given week.

The cost of that warmth sits on the calendar. NOAA’s Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, and the agency places most activity between mid-August and mid-October. From its second week, August is inside that stretch. Book refundable rates, watch the tropics in the ten days before you fly, and read our hurricane season guide before you commit to anything non-refundable. Rain totals alone miss that point: September carries 8.07 inches against August’s 6.54.

Anything that is not dated to August lives elsewhere in our Jamaica coverage: the ride in from Sangster is priced in airport transfers, the suitcase is settled in what to pack, the whole budget in trip cost, and the twelve-month view in best time to visit. Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020, computed for the grid cell at 18.4762° N, 77.8939° W. That is a model rebuilding the atmosphere over the bay, not a thermometer standing at Sangster International, and the two do not always agree: a reanalysis smooths the coastline and the hills behind it. Read 87.1°F and 76.8°F as the shape of a normal August, not as a reading anyone took on a particular afternoon.

18.7 days at a tenth of an inch or more works out to measurable rain on roughly three days in five. The heavy end is rarer: 0.5 day per August reaches a full inch, so a genuine soaking turns up in about one August in two. The series carries daily totals and not hours, so we will not tell you the rain arrives at four o’clock. Put outdoor plans in the morning because of the heat, keep the afternoon loose, and treat one wet stretch as normal rather than as bad luck.

Day and night are only 10.3°F apart, and a low of 76.8°F means dawn is already warm. Nothing in an August suitcase needs to hold heat in: a rain shell that folds into a day bag, a second shirt for the humidity and reef-safe sunscreen do more work than any sweater. Our packing list handles the rest, including what the salt and the sun do to a phone.

On August 15 the sun rises at 10:52 UTC and sets at 23:39 UTC. Convert to island time and that reads 5:52 a.m. and 6:39 p.m., for 12 hours and 47 minutes of daylight. At 18° N the light goes fast once the sun is down, so a 6 p.m. swim finishes in near darkness and every August dinner is a dinner after dark. Aim to have the last outdoor stop wrapped up by 6:30.

Can you swim in Montego Bay in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s marine series puts the sea surface off Montego Bay at 88.0°F in August, averaged over 2015 to 2024. One nuance belongs with that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, not a mean across 24 hours, so it sits a shade above what the water reads at first light. A hand will not catch the difference, and it is the reason our figure runs warmer than tables built on daily averages.

At 88.0°F there is no entry shock and no acclimatizing. The water is warmer than most hotel pools and warmer than the 86.4°F it averages in July, and it stops doing the one job cool water does: with air at 87.1°F and heavy humidity, an hour of snorkeling leaves you hot rather than refreshed, and the sun burns straight through the surface. Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard charges US$8 for visitors aged 12 and over and US$4 under 12, with its service desk open 08:30 to 17:30, seven days.

On wind and swell we have nothing to publish: our sources carry no wave height or wind series for the bay in August, so we give no figure. What the calendar does say is that a distant Atlantic system can roughen the north coast without ever approaching Jamaica, and from mid-month August sits inside the season’s busiest stretch. Check the marine forecast the morning you plan to snorkel, not the night before.

How much does Montego Bay cost in August? Room tax, airport taxis and the arrival fee

Start with what we cannot tell you. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Montego Bay, so we crown no month the cheapest or the dearest of the twelve. August falls in the school-holiday weeks for much of North America and inside the hurricane season, two calendar facts that pull in opposite directions on price, and we will not pretend to know which one wins in a given year. What we can price are the fixed items, and three of them matter.

Two booking rules come straight from the operators. Rafting the Martha Brae takes guests in order of arrival and says plainly that booking does not move anyone up the line, so the only lever is turning up near the 09:00 opening. Rose Hall’s Haunted Night Tour runs Wednesday to Saturday only: a Sunday-to-Tuesday stay cannot do it at any price. On lead time we have no rate series for August, so we give no number of weeks; the rule that survives is a refundable rate inside storm season.

Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per occupied room per night and scaled to the property, not to the traveler: US$1 at a property of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 from 51 to 100, US$4 at 101 rooms and above. Complimentary rooms attract it too. A large resort therefore adds US$4 a night, a fraction of what European cities charge per person. Separately, the government announced a US$20 fee on arriving air passengers effective August 1, 2012; we could not reconfirm that amount on a current government page, so take it with its date attached.

If one line of the August budget deserves the extra, make it the ride in from Sangster International and the shade you sleep under. Two taxi companies are authorised at the airport, JUTA and JCAL, sharing a single Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside the Customs exit. The airport publishes no fare table, so ask for the rate at that desk rather than trusting a figure copied off a booking site. And in a month with 18.7 wet days, you will use a covered veranda far more often than a sea view.

Things to do in Montego Bay in August: Doctor’s Cave Beach, Rose Hall and the Martha Brae

What August holds over its two neighbors is the combination rather than any single record. The sea reads 88.0°F, within 0.7°F of September’s 88.7°F, while the rain gauge stays 1.53 inches below September’s 8.07 and the wet days number 2.3 fewer. Against July, the water runs 1.6°F warmer. That is the month in one line: nearly September’s swimming, closer to July’s sky.

Three places carry a published price and a published hour. Doctor’s Cave Beach, on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard: US$8 for ages 12 and over, US$4 under 12, service desk 08:30 to 17:30, every day. Rose Hall Great House: the Day and Garden Tour at US$30 per adult, Monday to Saturday from 09:15 to 16:00, 45 minutes to an hour on your feet, plus the Haunted Night Tour at US$35, Wednesday to Saturday, 18:30 to 20:30. Rafting the Martha Brae: US$99 for visitors and J$13,000 for Jamaicans with a valid local ID, three miles of river in about an hour and a quarter, daily 09:00 to 16:00, cards accepted.

August moves the air around those places, not their contents. The Haunted Night Tour’s 18:30 start falls nine minutes before sunset on the 15th, so it opens in the last of the daylight and lets out at 20:30 into full dark, with the night sitting near that 76.8°F low. The rafting operator ties the length of the ride to the state of the water, and August carries 6.54 inches against July’s 5.17. Rose Hall’s day tour, by contrast, is the same indoor hour in any month of the year.

Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle, is the one we cannot price: no readable figure at source, and three travel sites quote US$35, US$30 and US$25 for the same adult ticket. Carry cash and ask at the gate. We also could not verify a single dated August event or free-admission day in Montego Bay, so we name none.

Montego Bay in August: a two-day itinerary

Day one is built around the 5:52 a.m. sunrise and the heat that follows it. Out by 7:00 for breakfast and the seafront while the air is still short of 87°F. At Doctor’s Cave Beach for the 08:30 opening, US$8 in hand, and swim through the first cool hours. Lunch and the flattest part of the afternoon under cover. Rose Hall’s Day and Garden Tour at 15:00 sits well inside the 09:15 to 16:00 window and costs an hour on your feet. Back for sunset at 6:39 p.m., dinner after dark.

Day two starts earlier. Rafting the Martha Brae opens at 09:00 and takes guests in arrival order, so an early car means an early raft: three miles, about an hour and a quarter, back in town by mid-afternoon. A gray sky changes nothing on the river, and the shower costs you the hours you would have spent hiding from the sun. If rain settles in for the whole day, swap Rose Hall to the 18:30 night tour, Wednesday to Saturday, and hold the beach for the next morning.

Montego Bay in August vs July and September

July August September
Average high 87.1°F 87.1°F 86.4°F
Average low 76.6°F 76.8°F 76.3°F
Precipitation 5.17 in 6.54 in 8.07 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 14.9 18.7 21.0
Sea (mean of daily maxima) 86.4°F 88.0°F 88.7°F

Across the three months the thermometer barely moves: 87.1°F in July, 87.1°F in August, 86.4°F in September, with lows inside half a degree of one another. The rain gauge does the separating. July takes 5.17 inches over 14.9 wet days, August 6.54 over 18.7, September 8.07 over 21.0, which puts September’s rain on two days in three. The water climbs the whole way through, 86.4°F to 88.0°F to 88.7°F, each of those a mean of daily maxima.

Move four weeks back to July and you buy 3.8 drier days and 1.37 inches less rain, and you land before the busiest stretch of the storm season opens in mid-August. The bill is 1.6°F of sea warmth, and the July page carries that month in full. Move four weeks forward to September and you gain 0.7°F of water while losing 2.3 days to rain, with the September 10 peak sitting in the middle of the trip. For most travelers, August is the better half of that trade.

Is August a good time to visit Montego Bay?

For swimmers, and for anyone whose plan is water first, August works: sea at 88.0°F, air at 87.1°F, and an inch-plus soaking in only about one August in two. For travelers who need settled dry mornings across a full week, or who cannot book a refundable rate, it is the wrong month. Rain on 18.7 days is three days in five, and the hurricane season’s busiest stretch begins in the second half of the month.

If that trade does not suit, July is the nearest fix: the same 87.1°F high, 1.37 inches less rain, 3.8 fewer wet days, and a sea still holding 86.4°F. Travelers with more room in the calendar should weigh the drier half of the year instead, which our month-by-month verdict for Jamaica lays out with the numbers attached.

Of the three months, only August pairs sea at 88.0°F with 12 hours and 47 minutes of daylight and 1.53 inches less rain than September.

The last word

Decide on the water, book refundable, and the August calculation is done. One detail belongs to the drive in, because a red plate is not the whole test of a licensed taxi. The Transport Authority lists five marks: the red PPV plate, a roof globe reading Taxi, a checked color code 10 cm high in 2.5 cm squares (black and yellow for a hackney carriage, black and white for a route taxi), a driver wearing a Transport Authority badge with the Driver Identification Card in the vehicle, and an electronic tracking device. No letter prefix appears on the regulator’s page. Ask for the fare at the Authorised Airport Taxi desk before you agree to the ride.
