Kingston vs Montego Bay: Weather, Daylight, Room Tax and Ticket Prices

Montego Bay faces the north shore, Kingston sits on the sheltered south coast, and the weather figures for the two come from two different model grid cells rather than one island average. The south-coast cell over Kingston covers the island’s driest side: 1.12 inches of rain in an average January, against 1.79 inches over Montego Bay. That difference holds in all twelve months, and it is the one thing that separates the two towns by a margin you would notice.

Most of what travelers weigh between them lands inside a rounding error. Sea surface off the two never differs by more than 1.5°F in any month, daylight on the 15th is never more than two minutes apart, and Jamaica’s room tax is keyed to the size of the hotel rather than to the town it stands in. What is left is the kind of day you want, and the month you are flying in.

The numbers below come from the model grid cell at 18.00°N 76.79°W for Kingston and the cell at 18.48°N 77.89°W for Montego Bay, on opposite coasts of the same island. Each town also has its own pillar here, Kingston and Montego Bay, where the detail that belongs to one town alone lives.

Kingston or Montego Bay

Take Montego Bay for a first week in Jamaica. The beach is ticketed and open every day, with Doctor’s Cave on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard charging US$8 for anyone 12 and over and US$4 below that, service running 08:30 to 17:30. Sangster International lands you in the same town, at a single authorised taxi desk outside the Customs exit. And the sea off the north shore runs warmer than Kingston’s from March through October, by 1.5°F in May at the widest.

Kingston is the better call for a second trip, for travelers who want a working capital rather than a shore strip, and for anyone whose dates fall in the shoulder of the wet season. In April the south-coast cell averages 4.1 days at 0.10 inch or more, against 9.9 over Montego Bay. The Blue Mountains rise behind the city, and the Kingston pillar carries what the city itself is worth.

Swimming temperature is not a tiebreaker. The sea off both towns sits at 81°F or above in every month of the year, the coldest reading in either series being 81.1°F off Montego Bay in February, and the two never part by more than 1.5°F. Nights match too: 70.9°F against 71.1°F as January averages. The room tax follows the national schedule in both towns, keyed to the size of the property.

Check your month’s rain days before you book anything, because that is the column where the two coasts genuinely diverge. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, and it covers the whole island rather than one coast. Kingston vs Montego Bay weather: temperature, rain and sea

Kingston runs warmer by day in ten months of twelve and drier in all twelve, on 1991-2020 normals. Only the rain-day counts open a gap anyone would feel on a week’s holiday: September brings 12.9 wet days to Kingston and 21.0 to Montego Bay, October 15.1 against 18.4.

Daytime temperature parts by 1.3°F at its widest, in January (82.1°F against 80.8°F) and again in December (82.5°F against 81.2°F). By September the two are 0.1°F apart, and in June and October the order reverses, with Montego Bay reading 86.6°F and 84.7°F against Kingston’s 86.4°F and 84.6°F. Nothing in that range changes what goes in a suitcase, as our packing list makes clear.

The sea reverses the pattern for eight months. Montego Bay’s water leads from March to October, peaking at 86.1°F against 84.6°F in May, while Kingston’s edges ahead by 0.7°F in December and 0.5°F in November. Those readings are means of daily maxima over 2015-2024, a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean. For anyone who just wants to get in the water, both coasts stay swimmable all year and neither one decides the trip.

Kingston and Montego Bay weather averages: temperature and rainfall by month

Kingston’s normals come from the model grid cell over the city at 18.00°N 76.79°W, on the sheltered south coast, the island’s driest side and nothing like the north shore the resorts sit on. Montego Bay’s come from the cell at 18.48°N 77.89°W on the north shore, where the interior hills rising behind the town run cooler and a good deal wetter than the coastal figure suggests. Neither series is an airport station reading, so we have no station elevation to quote for either town.

Both rain-day counts use the same threshold, a calendar day recording at least 0.10 inch, so those two columns compare directly, as do the air temperatures, which share a source and the 1991-2020 period. Heavy days stay rare on both coasts: the highest monthly count of days at an inch or more is 0.6 for Kingston and 1.3 for Montego Bay, both in May. The sea figures sit apart, drawn from a marine dataset over 2015-2024.

How long are the days in Kingston and Montego Bay?

Measured on the 15th of each month, the two towns are never more than two minutes apart. January 15 gives Kingston 11 hours 12 minutes and Montego Bay 11 hours 11. June 15 gives 13 hours 15 against 13 hours 17. December 15, the shortest of the twelve readings, gives 11 hours 06 against 11 hours 04. Latitude does almost nothing across 48 miles of island.

Longitude does a little more. Montego Bay sits farther west, so its sun arrives and leaves later by the clock: on January 15, Kingston runs 6:40 a.m. to 5:52 p.m. and Montego Bay 6:45 a.m. to 5:56 p.m., local time, no daylight saving. In mid-June the figures are 5:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. against 5:33 a.m. to 6:50 p.m.

From October through February that means the light is gone before six on both coasts, so a December afternoon on the water ends at 5:35 p.m. in Kingston and 5:39 p.m. in Montego Bay. Tourist tax and ticket prices in Kingston and Montego Bay

Jamaica’s Guest Accommodation Room Tax is charged per night on each occupied room and scaled to the property rather than to the traveler: US$1 for a hotel of 1 to 51 rooms, US$2 for 51 to 100, US$4 for 101 and above. That US$4 is the top band, whatever the resort costs, and complimentary rooms attract it too. The second charge is a fee on each arriving air passenger whose trip originates abroad, announced at US$20 with effect from August 1, 2012, an amount we could not confirm on a current government page.

Named tickets: Doctor’s Cave Beach at US$8 and US$4, Rose Hall Great House at US$30 by day and US$35 at night for a visit of 45 minutes to an hour, and rafting the Martha Brae at US$99 for visitors or J$13,000 with a valid Jamaican ID, about an hour and a quarter over three miles of river, cards accepted, guests taken in order of arrival. Every one of those sits on the Montego Bay side, and we did not read a published Kingston admission price while building this comparison.

Neither pillar carries a series of nightly hotel rates, so there is no cheaper-of-the-two ranking here; our trip cost guide handles budgets. Two other prices stay unread at source. Sangster’s authorised companies, JUTA and JCAL, share one desk outside the Customs exit and the airport publishes no fare table, so ask there, as airport transfers explains. Rocklands Bird Sanctuary publishes no price we could read, and three resellers quote US$35, US$30 and US$25, so carry cash.

Things to do in Kingston vs Montego Bay

Montego Bay’s day plans come with opening hours attached. Doctor’s Cave for a morning swim, Rose Hall Great House for a 45-minute tour of the house and gardens six days a week, the Martha Brae for a three-mile raft on a bamboo pole between 09:00 and 16:00, and Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, where red-billed streamertails feed from a hand-held bottle. Kingston’s case is not in the ticket prices, because we have not read one at source, which is a gap in our sourcing rather than a verdict on the city. Kingston or Montego Bay by month

May separates the two more than any other month. The cell over Montego Bay averages 8.48 inches of rain across 18.4 days at 0.10 inch or more, with 1.3 days at an inch or more, while Kingston shows 4.11 inches across 8.9 days, with 0.6 day at an inch. Daytime highs that month are all but identical, 85.3°F against 85.1°F, so the calendar decides it, not the thermometer. The month-by-month runs live on the Kingston and Montego Bay pillars.

The last word

The month decides more than the map does. Take Montego Bay and accept the extra wet days that come with the north shore, or take Kingston and accept a city in place of a beach strip. Either way, the Transport Authority identifies a licensed taxi by five marks: a red PPV plate, a roof globe reading Taxi, route details printed on the front doors of a route taxi, a checked color code 10 cm high in 2.5 cm squares, and a driver wearing a Transport Authority badge, as our getting-around guide unpacks.
