The Algarve is sold as one place and booked as three. Cliff-and-surf country at the western tip, the resort belt in the middle with its restaurants and its boat departures, and the lagoon towns of the east where the beach arrives by ferry. All three sit on one 150 km coast with a single airport at the eastern end of it, which is why picking a base is really a decision about how much of your week goes to the road.
Each choice charges for what it gives. The west trades transfer time for space and wind. The center trades quiet for services. The east trades evening choice for morning calm. And one legal detail cuts across the whole map: lifeguard cover starts and ends on different dates depending on which council your beach belongs to.

Think twice before: booking a May or October beach week outside Albufeira, the only Algarve council with lifeguards on its beaches in those two months.

One rule holds wherever you land: the further west you sleep, the more of the coast you drive. Every temperature figure here is read at the IPMA station in Faro, 5 m above sea level and at the eastern end of those 150 km, so it describes the eastern coastal plain and not the hills inland, which run colder and far wetter. Faro’s July normals are a high of 84.9°F and a low of 67.3°F; January’s are 61.3°F and 46.9°F, with 1.94 inches of rain. The month pages carry the rest.
Where to stay in the western Algarve: Sagres, Lagos and the wind coast
Sagres, Lagos and the villages of Vila do Bispo and Aljezur are where the Algarve stops behaving like a resort coast. The cliffs run high, the coves are small, and a good share of the shoreline faces the open Atlantic rather than the sheltered south. Wind is the constant. It feeds the surf schools and it also cancels a lazy afternoon on the sand, sometimes on the same day. Base in Lagos and you get a town with a working center behind the beaches; base at Sagres and you get emptiness, which is the reason to go.
The Fortaleza de Sagres is the anchor sight and a useful planning peg. It opens 09:30 to 17:30, with last entry half an hour before closing, and one ticket covers the fortress plus the walk out along the promontory. Sundays and public holidays are free until 14:00, but only for people resident in Portugal, so a visitor pays on any day of the week. We could not read the full adult price at source: the monument’s own page loads its price table in JavaScript and the regional ticket shop was unreachable when we tried. Ask at the gate.
The real cost of the west is road time. Faro airport sits at the eastern end of the 150 km coast, so a week in Sagres opens and closes with a drive along most of its length. In winter part of that drive happens in the dark: on January 15 the sun sets at 17:39 Lisbon time and the day runs about 9 hours 57 minutes. Day trips repeat the same arithmetic, because the sea caves and the crowded central beaches are a genuine drive away from the tip, not a stroll down the road.
Three kinds of trip should skip the west. A car-free one, since the villages sit far apart and the bus timetable becomes the itinerary. A short one, because a real slice of it disappears into transfers. And a May or October beach week with children, since the 2026 gazette puts lifeguards on the beaches of Lagos, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo only from 1 June to 30 September, while Albufeira in the center starts on 15 May and stays covered to 15 October.
Where to stay in the central Algarve
The strip from Albufeira through Carvoeiro to Portimão holds the region’s plumbing: restaurants open outside July, pharmacies, marinas, boat operators, taxis late at night, and the shortest airport transfers on the coast. It also buys the longest legal beach season in the Algarve, since Albufeira’s 2026 order covers 25 listed beaches from 15 May to 15 October and no other council matches that. The cost is calm. These are the busy beaches in August, and the towns behind them carry the noise. Nightly rates follow the same curve and live on the Portugal trip cost page. The center also puts you nearest Benagil, where access is now regulated rather than casual. Edital 019/2024, in force since 13 August 2024 and amended by Edital 009/2025, bans swimming into the sea cave from the beach or from a boat, with or without a float, and bans boats and kayaks from landing on the sand inside. Guided kayak and paddleboard tours run with a licensed guide, a cap on how many craft are inside at once, and a stopwatch: two minutes for a motorized boat, up to eight for a guided paddle group. Where to stay in the eastern Algarve: Tavira, the lagoon and the quieter end
East of Faro the coast lies down. The Ria Formosa spreads channels and sandbanks between the towns and the open sea, so Tavira, Olhão and Fuseta look out over water that barely moves and reach their beaches by boat. Tavira is the base most people mean here: a river town with a covered market, church steps and dinner at local prices. Faro itself earns one night at each end of a trip, given how close the airport is.
You give up choice after dark and you inherit a long westward drive. Evenings come down to a handful of restaurants around one square, and several of them close in low season. The cliffs, the caves and the surf beaches all sit at the far end of that 150 km coast, which turns a morning at Ponta da Piedade into a full-day expedition with two transfers wrapped around it. Couples who want a market and a ferry will be delighted. A group that wants the caves before lunch will spend the week driving.
The island beaches are the reason to be out here, and they run on timetables. Ferries and water taxis cross from Tavira, Olhão and Fuseta to the barrier islands, and the crossing shapes the day more than the room does. We do not publish fares or sailing times from memory, since they shift with season and operator: check at the quay the evening before. Lifeguard cover follows the council, 1 June to 30 September for Tavira, Olhão and Faro, and any beach the 2026 order does not list had no assured cover on the date it was published.
Do you need a car in the Algarve? The A22 and the toll question
The A22, the Via do Infante, runs the length of the Algarve behind the coast, and it is reported to have been toll-free since 1 January 2025. We could not confirm that on an operator or government page a machine can read, because both serve their content in JavaScript, so treat the status as unconfirmed and check before you drive. If charges are in force when you arrive, they are electronic, which makes the transponder box a question at the rental desk rather than a booth on the road. Where you sleep decides how many long runs you make on that motorway. A central base keeps the airport transfer short and reduces most beach days to a few kilometers of local road. A western base puts the full length of the A22 under your wheels twice, on arrival and departure, plus every eastward day trip on top. From the east the pattern flips: the lagoon, the Spanish border and the market towns are close, and the sea caves become the long haul.
The alternative is the N125, the old national road that threads through every town between Vila Real de Santo António and Lagos. It costs nothing and it costs time: roundabouts, traffic lights, farm traffic and school-run hours in the villages. For one hop between neighboring beaches it is frequently the better road, and the more interesting one. For an airport run with a flight to catch it is not the road to gamble on, as the getting-around guide spells out.
The legal bathing season in the Algarve: dates and lifeguard cover
The bathing season here is fixed by law, and it is not one date for the whole coast. For 2026, Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1, published in the Diário da República on 30 April 2026, sets it council by council: Albufeira from 15 May to 15 October across its 25 listed beaches, and Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo from 1 June to 30 September. One beach in Castro Marim is shorter still, 1 July to 31 August.
Beach by beach, the annex says more than we reproduce here. It also designates which stretches count as bathing beaches at all, and any beach it does not list had no guaranteed lifeguard cover on the date of publication, including quiet coves reached on foot down a cliff path. Water quality during the season is published separately by the national environment agency. For one specific cove, the annex is the document to read, and the sign at the access point is the check on the day you swim.
For a trip in May or October, that single line of law is the strongest argument for a central base: Albufeira is the only council with lifeguards on duty in those two months, and a swim anywhere else on the coast is an unsupervised swim whatever the thermometer says. Water temperature is rarely the obstacle people expect. Off the Algarve it averages 62.0°F in January and 66.8°F in July, taken as a mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024. How many nights in the Algarve
Order the bases by how long you have. A short first trip belongs in the center, where the transfer is shortest and one road serves the caves, the boats and a lifeguarded beach; the three-day plan assumes exactly that. Add days and the west earns a base of its own, so Sagres and the Lagos cliffs become mornings instead of drives. Longer again, and the east arrives as the third stop, with the lagoon ferries and Tavira closing the trip rather than interrupting it.
