FLORIDA · GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE · OCTOBER
In October the Gulf side of the Panhandle cools off without turning cold. Afternoon highs average 80.9°F, the water off the islands still averages 78.9°F at its daily peak, and a typical October brings only 3.5 days with a tenth of an inch of rain or more. For a beach-and-forts trip across the seashore’s Florida and Mississippi units, you can pack light and plan most hours outdoors.
The month has its limits too. Hurricane season runs until November 30 (the dates are on our Florida overview), daylight shrinks to about 11 hours 28 minutes by mid-month, and nights drop to 63.2°F on average. Each of those shapes a two-day visit, and September and November trade them in different ways.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE · OCTOBER
October gives the seashore 80.9°F afternoons, sea water near 79°F and less rain than September or November, so book it for beaches and forts and keep the dates refundable until hurricane season closes on November 30.
HIGHS 80.9°F · SEA 78.9°F · 3.5 RAIN DAYS · HURRICANE SEASON TO NOV 30
Go for: fort walks at Fort Pickens in 80.9°F afternoons, swims in a sea that averages 78.9°F at its daily peak, and fewer rain days than September or November.
Think twice before: booking non-refundable while hurricane season runs through November 30, or counting on bath-warm water: the sea sits 7.0°F below September’s.

Gulf Islands National Seashore weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| October normal | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.9°F (27.2°C) | NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 |
| Average low | 63.2°F (17.3°C) | NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 |
| Precipitation | 2.82 in | NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.5 | NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 1.1 | NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 |

The normals below and above are official 1991-2020 figures from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, read from station USW00053853 at South Walton: a real thermometer, not a model grid cell. October there averages a high of 80.9°F, a low of 63.2°F and 2.82 inches of precipitation. The seashore runs some 160 miles west of that station into Mississippi, so read every figure here as a picture of the park’s eastern end rather than of the Mississippi units at the far end of that stretch.
An average October logs 3.5 days with at least a tenth of an inch of rain, roughly one day in nine. On paper, about four two-day trips in five would stay dry on both days. Keep one covered plan in reserve anyway, such as the brick casemates at Fort Pickens, and slide the beach hours around it when a front comes through.
Between the 80.9°F afternoon and the 63.2°F dawn lies a gap of 17.7°F. Pack shorts and a swimsuit for midday, plus a light fleece or long-sleeve layer for sunrise walks and dinner outdoors. Swimmers leaving the beach late will feel the cooler air on wet skin, so put a dry towel and a spare shirt in the beach bag.
On October 15 the sun rises at 6:46 am and sets at 6:14 pm Central Daylight Time, for about 11 hours 28 minutes of daylight. The Florida and Mississippi sections of the park both keep Central time. Plan the last swim for around 5 pm and settle on the sand at Santa Rosa Island or Perdido Key before 6 pm to catch the sunset.
Gulf Islands National Seashore sea temperature in October: can you swim?
Sea surface off the seashore averages 78.9°F in October, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would, and it comes from a different source and period than the NOAA air normals. Early-morning water sits a little below it.
Yes, you can swim, and the afternoon is the time to do it, when the water is closest to that daily peak. Expect a cool first step and a quick adjustment, with a rash guard handy for children on long sessions. At dawn the water is warmer than the 63.2°F air, so the chill arrives when you get out: have the towel within reach before you leave the water.
Our sources carried no wind or swell data for October off these islands, so we give no wave outlook. Check the colored beach flags where lifeguards post them and the National Weather Service forecast on the morning you swim. Hurricane season stays open through November 30, and our Florida safety guide sets out the storm-season basics.
How busy is Gulf Islands National Seashore in October? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series or monthly room-rate data for the seashore, so we rank October as neither cheap nor expensive. The calendar gives two firm markers: summer school breaks are over, and Thanksgiving and the winter holidays lie ahead. Statewide, holiday weeks and spring break mark the annual price peaks (see our Florida overview), and October falls in neither.
No booking-lead data turned up in our sources either, so we name no number of weeks. The weather does argue for flexibility: with hurricane season open through November 30, choose refundable rooms and changeable flights, then lock them in once the forecast settles. Our Florida trip-cost guide helps you budget the rest of the week.
The lodging-tax rate on rooms near the seashore is another figure we could not verify, so we give no percentage. Ask for the total with taxes and fees when you compare quotes, and check whether a resort or parking fee sits on top of the nightly rate.
If one line of the budget deserves extra money in October, make it location. With the sun down at 6:14 pm, a room on Santa Rosa Island or Perdido Key keeps the beach close at both sunrise and sunset, while a cheaper room inland adds a drive to each end of an 11-hour-28-minute day. Our Florida where-to-stay guide compares bases across the state.
Things to do in Gulf Islands National Seashore in October

In October you can do a fort and the beach on the same day. At September’s 88.5°F average high, a midday walk along brick walls is hard going, while October’s 80.9°F leaves room for a morning at a fort and an afternoon swim in water that still averages 78.9°F at its daily peak. November cools the walk further but takes the sea down to 72.4°F.
On Santa Rosa Island, Fort Pickens holds the western tip and Opal Beach offers a long stretch of undeveloped sand farther east. Near Gulf Breeze, the Naval Live Oaks trails fill a shaded morning away from the surf, and Perdido Key has the seashore’s westernmost Florida beach. In Mississippi, the Davis Bayou area at Ocean Springs adds marsh trails and a visitor center. Our sources carried no October hours, entrance fees or parking counts for any of these, so we quote none: the National Park Service posts them unit by unit.
Sand, brick and trails stay the same all year. The air and water around them move: from September to October the average high falls 7.6°F and the sea 7.0°F, so fort walks get easier while swims get cooler. The low falls 9.2°F over the same four weeks, to 63.2°F, so bring a layer for a sunrise walk at Naval Live Oaks.
We could not confirm any fee-free park day falling in October, so we promise none. Watching the 6:14 pm sunset from a public beach access outside the park gate costs nothing beyond parking where it is charged. Our Florida things-to-do guide has more ideas for the rest of the state.
Gulf Islands National Seashore in October: a two-day itinerary
Spend day one on Santa Rosa Island. Be on the sand at Opal Beach for the 6:46 am sunrise with a layer on, since dawn averages 63.2°F. Drive west to Fort Pickens by mid-morning and walk the walls before the 80.9°F afternoon peak. Break for lunch around noon, swim from about 2 pm to 5 pm while the water sits near its 78.9°F daily maximum, and find a spot on the beach before the 6:14 pm sunset.
On day two, start with the Naval Live Oaks trails in the cool of the morning, then head west for an afternoon at Perdido Key. With a car and an extra night, the Davis Bayou area in Mississippi makes a longer third stop. If the forecast turns on either day, swap the afternoon beach block with the fort morning, because the casemates at Fort Pickens give cover from a shower. Our Florida road-trip guide helps if you are chaining other stops onto the weekend.
Gulf Islands National Seashore in October vs September and November
| Normal | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 88.5°F | 80.9°F | 72.1°F |
| Average low | 72.4°F | 63.2°F | 53.0°F |
| Precipitation | 5.18 in | 2.82 in | 4.13 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 5.3 | 3.5 | 4.3 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima, Open-Meteo 2015-2024) | 85.9°F | 78.9°F | 72.4°F |
| Air source | NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 | NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 | NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 |
October sits between two very different months. The average high drops from 88.5°F in September to 80.9°F, then to 72.1°F in November, and the low goes from 72.4°F to 63.2°F to 53.0°F. Rain runs 5.18 inches, then 2.82, then 4.13, so October is the driest of the three by more than an inch against either neighbor. By the Open-Meteo marine figures, the sea cools from 85.9°F to 78.9°F to 72.4°F.
Travel four weeks earlier and you gain 7.0°F of sea temperature and warmer evenings, at the cost of 1.8 more rain days and the statistical peak of hurricane season around September 10 (our Florida overview has the date). Four weeks later, fort walks happen under 72.1°F highs, but the sea falls to 72.4°F, lows reach 53.0°F and rain days rise to 4.3. November also stays inside hurricane season until the 30th.
Is October a good time to visit Gulf Islands National Seashore?
Yes, for most beach-and-history trips. October suits couples, families with flexible school dates and anyone who wants to swim and walk the forts on the same day. It suits less well a traveler who wants bath-warm water, or a trip that cannot move if a storm forms in the Gulf.
If warm water is the point, choose September and accept 5.18 inches of rain and the season’s storm peak. If you plan to walk more than swim, November’s 72.1°F highs suit better, and our Florida best-time guide lays the state’s calendar side by side.
Of the three fall months, October alone pairs the lowest rainfall, 2.82 inches, with a sea that still averages 78.9°F at its daily peak.
The last word
Book October with a cancellable room and a beach bag that holds both a swimsuit and a fleece. The weather worth planning around is the heavy day: an average October brings 1.1 days with an inch of rain or more, so keep one flexible afternoon for the casemates at Fort Pickens and save the others for swimming in water that still peaks near 79°F.
