FLORIDA · NOVEMBER · GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE
By mid-November the sun sets over Santa Rosa Island at 4:49 p.m. Central time. The afternoon high averages 72.1°F, and the Gulf’s daily peak surface temperature has slipped to 72.4°F. Air and water land within half a degree of each other, a match neither October nor December offers. The long summer beach days are over. Brick forts, white sand and live-oak trails remain, strung across two states.
Swimmers who want a Gulf in the high 70s should book October, when the surface still averages 78.9°F. Walkers who would rather tour Fort Pickens in 72-degree air than in summer heat have found their month. Fly into Pensacola for the Florida end (routes are in our Florida flights guide) and plan on two or three nights (est.) for a first trip.

Every air figure here comes from NOAA’s official 1991–2020 monthly normals for station USW00053853, a real thermometer at South Walton rather than a reanalysis grid cell. At that station November averages a high of 72.1°F and a low of 53.0°F, with 4.13 inches of precipitation. The seashore runs 160 miles west from there into Mississippi, so these normals describe its eastern end. Conditions at Davis Bayou in Ocean Springs may differ, and we did not read a station normal for that end.
Measurable rain, at least 0.10 inch, falls on 4.3 days in an average November, roughly one day in seven. On 1.5 of those days the total reaches an inch or more, so a typical month holds one or two proper soakers and a few light showers. When a soaker lands, move the beach walk to the covered casemates at Fort Pickens and go back to the sand the next morning.
Between the 53.0°F average low and the 72.1°F high sits a 19.1°F swing. A sunrise walk and a mid-afternoon one need different clothes. Pack a fleece or light jacket for early starts and evenings, shorts or light pants for the afternoon, and a rain shell for the wet days. Closed shoes suit the trails at Naval Live Oaks in Gulf Breeze.
On November 15 the seashore gets about 10 hours 39 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 6:09 a.m. and sets at 4:49 p.m. Central Standard Time (12:09 and 22:49 UTC), and both the Florida and Mississippi ends keep Central time. Plan your last beach stop for about 4 p.m., and head back from the western tip of Santa Rosa Island before dark if the road is new to you.
Can you swim in Gulf Islands National Seashore in November? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine data puts the sea surface off the seashore at 72.4°F in November, averaged over 2015–2024. That figure is the mean of each day’s maximum, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would, and a morning dip meets slightly cooler water. It also comes from a different source and period than the NOAA air normals. Read the two side by side with that in mind.
Around 72°F, most people call the Gulf refreshing: fine for a quick swim on a sunny afternoon, cool for floating around for an hour. With the air high at 72.1°F, stepping out wet is the chilly moment, and it gets chillier after 3 p.m. as the light drops. Bring a warm layer and a big towel to the sand. Anyone planning to stay in for long will be happier in a thin wetsuit or long-sleeve rash guard.
We could not read wind or wave data for November off the seashore, so we give no wind speed or swell height. Before a beach day, check the National Weather Service marine forecast and the warning flags posted on the beach, and see our Florida safety guide for the water-safety basics.
How busy is Gulf Islands National Seashore in November? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for the seashore’s gateway towns, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. Two calendar facts do hold. November comes after the summer beach season, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs to November 30, as our Florida guide notes from NOAA. Statewide budget tiers are in what a Florida trip costs.
With no lead-time data to lean on, our working rule for a November weekend is to book a room on Pensacola Beach or Navarre Beach two to four weeks ahead (est.). Holiday weekends deserve more notice. Because hurricane season stays officially open until the 30th, pick a refundable rate when the price gap is small.
We could not verify the lodging or tourist-development tax rates in the Florida and Mississippi counties along the seashore, so we give no percentage. Ask for the all-in nightly total, with tax and any resort fee included, before you book.
Pay for a room on the barrier island if you pay extra for anything. With sunset at 4:49 p.m., a bed in Pensacola Beach or Navarre Beach puts the last light a short walk from the door, while a mainland base means a bridge crossing to see it. We have no rate data to size the premium, so compare both totals for your dates. Our Florida where-to-stay guide covers the wider choice.
Things to do in Gulf Islands National Seashore in November

At an average high of 72.1°F, you can spend a full afternoon inside Fort Pickens or walk a trail end to end without chasing shade. Summer heat squeezes the same loop into the early morning. December’s 65.6°F high and 6.5 wet days turn the beach into a jacket outing.
Fort Pickens stands at the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, with Opal Beach farther east on the same island. Naval Live Oaks sits in Gulf Breeze, the Perdido Key beaches lie west of Pensacola, and Davis Bayou anchors the Mississippi end in Ocean Springs. We could not verify November entrance fees, gate hours or parking capacity for any of them, so we quote none. The National Park Service posts current fees and hours on its Gulf Islands site. Check them the evening before you drive out.
In October the Gulf’s daily peak of 78.9°F sits 2.0°F below the 80.9°F average high. In November the sea, at 72.4°F, runs 0.3°F above the 72.1°F high, so the water feels closer to the air than it did a month earlier. Forts and trails gain the most from the change: the afternoon high drops 8.8°F from October.
We could not verify any fee-free entrance day at the seashore for November, so we name none. The Park Service publishes its annual list of fee-free days, and it is worth checking against your dates before you pay at the gate. If you already carry an America the Beautiful pass, bring it. Gulf Islands National Seashore in November: a two-day itinerary
Day one covers the Florida end. Leave Pensacola by about 7 a.m., under an hour after the 6:09 a.m. sunrise, and drive out Santa Rosa Island to Fort Pickens while the air is still near its 53°F low. Tour the fort through late morning, have lunch in Pensacola Beach, then spend 1 to 3 p.m. at Opal Beach, the warmest part of the day. Swim then if the 72.4°F water appeals. Be on the sand by 4 p.m. for the 4:49 p.m. sunset, and plan dinner after dark.
Day two starts on the Naval Live Oaks trails in Gulf Breeze, then heads west to the Perdido Key beaches for the afternoon. If one of November’s 4.3 rain days hits day one, swap the order and save Fort Pickens and its casemates for the wet day. An average month holds 1.5 days with an inch or more, so check the forecast each night. With a third day, drive to Davis Bayou in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Our Florida road trip guide helps link the seashore to a longer route.
Gulf Islands National Seashore in November vs October and December
| Normal | October | November | December |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.9°F | 72.1°F | 65.6°F |
| Average low | 63.2°F | 53.0°F | 47.5°F |
| Precipitation | 2.82 in | 4.13 in | 4.72 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.5 | 4.3 | 6.5 |
| Sea surface (Open-Meteo, daily maxima) | 78.9°F | 72.4°F | 65.9°F |
At the NOAA station, the average high falls from 80.9°F in October to 72.1°F in November and 65.6°F in December, with lows of 63.2°F, 53.0°F and 47.5°F. Rain climbs from 2.82 inches over 3.5 days to 4.13 inches over 4.3 days, then 4.72 inches over 6.5 days. Open-Meteo’s sea surface drops by the same 6.5°F at each step: 78.9°F, 72.4°F, 65.9°F.
Moving four weeks earlier gets you an 80.9°F afternoon, a 78.9°F sea and the fewest wet days of the three, and places the trip deeper inside the hurricane season. Moving four weeks later puts you past the season’s November 30 close, at the cost of 6.5°F of sea, 2.2 more rain days and a 47.5°F average low.
Is November a good time to visit Gulf Islands National Seashore?
Yes, if the trip is about forts, trails, beach walks and photographs: 72.1°F afternoons and a 10-hour-39-minute day cover all of it. No, if you picture long swims and lazy late afternoons on the sand. The Gulf’s daily peak is down to 72.4°F and the light goes at 4:49 p.m.
Swimmers should pick October: 78.9°F water, an 80.9°F high and 3.5 rain days, the fewest of the three months. Our October guide has the full picture.
Of the three months, November is the only one where the Gulf and the afternoon air both sit within a degree of 72°F.
The last word
Book the barrier island, pack the fleece, and try the water at first light anyway. Even allowing for the daily-maximum caveat, a Gulf averaging 72.4°F runs 19.4°F above the 53.0°F average low, so a dawn walk that feels chilly on the sand meets water noticeably warmer than the air. Then be back at Opal Beach for the 4:49 p.m. sunset.
