Porto and the North in December: Weather, Rain Days and Short Daylight

Porto in December keeps its shutters open. Afternoons average 58.5°F, nights 45.7°F, and the granite quays of the Ribeira stay walkable in a fleece and a rain shell. The hard northern European freeze does not arrive on this coast, and the city behaves accordingly: markets open, port lodges pouring, trams grinding up the same wet hill.

What the month does take is daylight and dry ground. December 15 gives 9 hours 16 minutes of it, and an average December records 12.4 days with measurable rain. Build the trip around those two numbers and the north is generous in winter: tiled halls, long lunches, and a Douro railway with no harvest traffic on it.

December gives Porto 58.5°F afternoons and 9 hours 16 minutes of daylight, so keep outdoor plans short and early, keep evenings indoors, and keep the Douro day movable.

Go for: a mild Atlantic winter at 58.5°F, tiled interiors and port lodges an easy walk across the river, and a Douro valley with the vineyards bare and the trains quiet.

Think twice before: planning a hiking week on these numbers: 6.04 inches of rain falls over 12.4 days, and the upland north is colder and wetter than the coastal station we read.

This is the date question only. Which neighborhood to sleep in, how the metro works and what a plate of tripas costs belong to our Porto city guide and to where to stay in Portugal. If the dates are still open, the 12-month verdict ranks the whole calendar, and the packing guide covers the shell and the shoes.

Porto and the North weather in December: average highs, lows and rain days

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute, and from one specific thermometer: station 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras, the airport, 222 feet above sea level and a short drive from the Atlantic. Across 1991-2020 it records a December average high of 58.5°F, an average low of 45.7°F and 6.04 inches of precipitation. Those are coastal-city readings. Inland and on the high ground of the north, winter runs colder and the rain totals climb, so pack for Porto with these numbers and for a mountain trail with more.

Rain falls on 12.4 days, close to two days in five. Before that sinks the trip, read the threshold: IPMA counts any day above 0.04 inch, so a single twenty-minute shower lands in the same column as a soaking. The heavier count is the useful one, and it is 5.3 days at 0.39 inch or more, roughly one December day in six. US tables usually start counting at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of rain days are not interchangeable.

Between the 45.7°F low and the 58.5°F high sits a spread of 12.8 degrees, narrow for a winter month because the ocean sits right there moderating both ends. A mid-layer plus a waterproof shell handles the whole day without a bulky coat. Two items matter more than the coat: shoes with real grip, since Porto’s granite sidewalks and its stepped lanes turn slick, and a small bag that closes, because the showers arrive without much notice.

Light is the scarce resource. On December 15 the sun rises at 7:51 am and sets at 5:08 pm local time, mainland Portugal staying on UTC through the winter, for 9 hours 16 minutes of daylight. In practice that means breakfast in the dark, a usable outdoor block from about 9 am, and the good low light on the river between 4 pm and sunset. Anything you want to photograph outdoors happens before dinner, not after.

How warm is Porto and the North in December? Highs of 58.5°F, lows of 45.7°F

The month averages 58.5°F by day and 45.7°F overnight at the airport station, a 12.8-degree swing from the coldest hour to the warmest. Compared with a December in Boston or Chicago this is a mild month outright, and compared with the Algarve it is a few degrees cooler and a good deal wetter. Nothing here is winter in the American sense. It is a damp, temperate month with a short working day.

Dress for the 45.7°F end at 9 am and shed layers by 2 pm. A thin down or fleece under a rain shell, a scarf, and one pair of shoes you accept will get wet covers a week. Gloves and a hat earn their space on the river, where the wind off the Douro mouth bites more than the thermometer suggests. Leave the heavy parka: you will carry it all afternoon.

We found no frost-day count for station 545, so we give no number of freezing nights. What the normals do say is that the monthly average low of 45.7°F sits well clear of freezing on the coast, while the interior of the north runs colder. We also could not verify a December sea-surface temperature for this stretch of Atlantic, so we quote no water figure. Sea tables generally average daily maxima, which reads a little warmer than a 24-hour mean, and this is not a swimming month regardless.

How busy is Porto and the North in December? Crowds, prices and the holiday week

By the calendar, December sits in the north’s low season, with one block written straight into it: the Christmas and New Year week, when Portuguese families travel and the city fills with people who are not tourists at all. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Porto, so we crown no month the cheapest and we quote no nightly price. What the budget looks like overall lives in our Portugal trip cost guide.

That splits the month into two booking problems. For a trip inside December 22 to January 2, treat it as peak demand and lock the room and the transatlantic seat well ahead; flights from the US to Porto thin out in winter and connect through Lisbon or a European hub more often than they run direct. For any other week, three or four nights in Porto is an easy late booking, and a weekend added to a work trip genuinely works in this month.

We could not verify Porto’s per-night municipal tourist tax rate, so we give no amount and no cap. Expect it to appear as a separate line at check-in rather than inside the room price, and ask the property what it charges when you reserve. The paperwork side of arriving, from entry requirements to what to have on your phone, is covered in know before you go.

One upgrade changes this month more than any other. With 12.4 wet days, a central room with real heating and a radiator that dries a jacket overnight is worth more than a view: it turns a rained-out afternoon into a fifteen-minute retreat instead of a metro ride. The second is wheels for the valley day, which the car guide prices out against trains and buses.

Things to do in Porto and the North in December

Short days put the bridge walk before 5 p.m. · Illustration

December hands Porto back to its interiors, and the city has more of them than a summer visitor ever gets around to. With 9 hours 16 minutes of daylight, the day divides cleanly: one outdoor block, one indoor anchor, then a long evening that starts before six. Up the river the vineyards are bare and the September harvest crowds are four months gone, which leaves the valley emptier than at any point in the visiting season.

The named short list barely changes: the Ribeira quays and the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge, the Clérigos tower, the azulejo hall at São Bento station, Livraria Lello, the port lodges on the Vila Nova de Gaia bank, Serralves for modern art and gardens, and out of town the Douro Valley, Guimarães and Braga. We could not verify December opening hours or admission for any of them, so we quote no ticket price and no closing day. Check each operator before you walk over.

What the month alters is the air around those places, not the places themselves. The tiles at São Bento look the same in August; the difference is that you reach them at 58.5°F with a wet coat, and that the 12.8-degree day-night spread makes a 9 am start genuinely cold. Outdoor sites feel shorter and indoor ones feel longer. A vineyard terrace in December is a view and a fire, not a picnic.

Plenty of the best of it costs nothing. The Ribeira waterfront, the walk across the bridge’s upper deck, the viewpoint at Jardim do Morro above Gaia and the tiled hall of São Bento, which is a working train station you can simply stroll into, are all free at any hour of the day. We could not verify which museums run free admission slots in December, so ask at the desk rather than counting on it.

Porto and the North in December: a two-day itinerary

Day one stays in the city and races the light. Coffee at 8:30 while it is still gray, São Bento’s tiles at 9, Clérigos and the Lello block by 10:30, then down the lanes to the Ribeira for late morning. Eat indoors from 1 to 2:30, the wettest slot to be outside. Cross the bridge to the Gaia lodges at 3, take the 4 pm light on the river from Jardim do Morro, and be under a roof by the 5:08 pm sunset with the evening still ahead of you.

Day two goes up the valley: the Douro line east in the morning, lunch at a quinta or in Pinhão, and back before dark, since the return legs after 5 pm run through a landscape you cannot see. If the forecast shows one of the month’s 5.3 heavy days, swap it. Serralves in the morning and a port lodge tour in the afternoon fills a soaked day without a single outdoor hour, and Guimarães keeps its castle and its old town an hour away by train for the following morning.

Porto and the North in December vs November and January

November December January
Average high 62.2°F 58.5°F 57.2°F
Average low 48.9°F 45.7°F 43.5°F
Precipitation 6.53 in 6.04 in 5.94 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 13.0 12.4 12.8
Sea temperature not verified not verified not verified

The three months are closer than the calendar suggests. December’s 58.5°F high runs 3.7 degrees under November and 1.3 degrees over January, and its 45.7°F low sits 3.2 degrees under November and 2.2 over January. Rainfall barely moves either: 6.53 inches in November, 6.04 in December, 5.94 in January, with wet days at 13.0, 12.4 and 12.8. Same IPMA station, same 1991-2020 period, so the comparison is like for like. Neither neighbor offers a drier month.

Shifting four weeks back buys the warmest of the three, roughly four degrees on the afternoon and longer daylight, at the cost of half an inch more rain and no holiday atmosphere in the city. Shifting four weeks forward costs 1.3 degrees by day and 2.2 at night for almost identical rain, and gains the quietest stretch of the north’s year once the New Year traffic clears. Read November or January before you decide.

Is December a good time to visit Porto and the North?

Yes for a city trip, no for an outdoor one. If your list is port lodges, tiled churches, markets, food and a valley day by train, 58.5°F and a coat is a fine bargain and the streets belong to the people who live on them. If your list is coastal hiking, beach time or Peneda-Gerês on foot, 12.4 wet days and 9 hours of light will beat you, and the high ground is colder and wetter than the airport numbers show.

If that second list is yours, do not shuffle by a month: November and January are within a degree or two of December on every line. The useful move is a whole season, and the month-by-month verdict for Portugal makes the case for the spring and early-summer window. If the dates are fixed and the weather worries you, moving south to Lisbon or the Algarve buys more winter sun than moving the calendar does.

One thing December alone delivers: the year’s shortest days, which turn a city famous for its river views into a city of lit interiors from 5:08 pm onward, with the Douro vineyards bare and unvisited at the other end of the train line.

The last word

Book the central, heated room and keep the valley day movable: that is the whole December decision. One number we held back makes the case for it. Those 6.04 inches fall across 12.4 wet days, close to half an inch on each of them, so this is a month of real rain in bursts rather than a month of steady gray drizzle. Carry the shell, plan one indoor anchor a day, and treat the 5:08 pm dark as permission to eat early and stay late.
