Benagil in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and How It Compares to April and June

Benagil in May runs to 74.3°F by mid-afternoon and drops to 59.0°F before dawn, with 1.03 inches of rain spread across 3.8 days. Those are the 1991-2020 normals published by IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, read at its Faro station. Set beside June, which averages 80.2°F and a near-dry 0.20 inches, May is the cooler, greener, slightly damper cousin, and it has the long evenings already.

What May will not hand you is warm water. The sea off this stretch averages 63.4°F, barely a tenth of a degree off April’s 63.5°F, so swimming is a decision rather than a default. Everything else is working for you: cliff paths at walking temperature, boats running to the Algar de Benagil, daylight past 8 p.m. The wider coast is covered in our Algarve guide.

May gives you 74.3°F afternoons, only 3.8 rain days and 14 hours of daylight, all of it before the sea has warmed past 63.4°F: a walker’s and boater’s month rather than a swimmer’s.

Go for: boat time to the cave, the cliff path between Praia da Marinha and Carvoeiro at 74.3°F instead of high-summer heat, and dinners that start in daylight.

Think twice before: planning a swimming holiday around 63.4°F water, or booking a non-refundable boat slot when no station on this coast measures the sea state.

Already sold on the month and wondering how the trip fits together? Benagil is a hamlet, and most visits attach it to Lagos or Carvoeiro. April’s version of this month sits at Benagil in April.

Every figure here traces back to one instrument: IPMA station 554 at Faro, five meters above sea level and some 60 km east along the coast. That matters, because a real coastal thermometer and a model grid cell do not always agree. The 1991-2020 series gives May an average high of 74.3°F and an average low of 59.0°F, and it travels well along this low shoreline. It travels badly inland, where the hills behind the coast read colder and far wetter.

Measurable rain lands on 3.8 days in an average May, roughly one day in eight. Two cautions come with that count. IPMA registers a rain day at 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, while US tables usually start at 0.10 inch, so the two are not interchangeable and IPMA’s number runs higher by design. And 1.03 inches for a whole month is a grey morning or two, not a washout.

The gap between day and night is 15.3°F, and it is the single thing people pack wrong. Afternoons on the cliff want shorts and sun cover, while 59.0°F at 6 a.m. on an open boat, or on a terrace after sunset, wants a fleece and long pants in the same bag. Our packing guide has the full list for a Portuguese spring.

Light is the month’s quiet luxury. On May 15 the sun rises at 6:21 a.m. local time and sets at 8:34 p.m., giving 14 hours 13 minutes between the two, per sunrise-sunset.org and converted from UTC. You can walk a coastal path after 7 p.m. and still eat outside in the last of it.

Can you swim in Benagil in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off Benagil averages 63.4°F in May, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. One nuance belongs with that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would show. Early morning water is cooler than 63.4°F, not warmer.

In practice, that is a brisk swim rather than a lounging one. Anyone used to the Atlantic off New England or the northern California coast will walk straight in, stay ten or fifteen minutes and come out glad. Small children usually do not last, and neither do most people without a shorty wetsuit. The compensation arrives on land: at 74.3°F, you dry and warm up fast.

On wind and swell, we have to be straight with you. No station on this stretch measures the sea state, and the sea state is precisely what decides whether a boat can enter the Algar de Benagil on a given morning. We could not verify a wave-height or wind series for the cove, so we quote none. Ask your operator the evening before and keep a spare morning.

How busy is Benagil in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

May sits in the run-up to the Algarve’s summer, ahead of the Northern European school holidays that fill this coast from late June. That much is calendar, not speculation. Beyond it, we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Benagil, so we crown no month cheapest and none most expensive. Our best-time-to-visit guide takes the twelve-month view for the country.

Book earlier than the month suggests anyway, for one structural reason: Benagil is a hamlet with a single small cove, and the boats, kayaks and paddleboards that reach the cave all launch from it or from Carvoeiro and Lagos nearby. Capacity is small even in a quiet month. Weeks ahead rather than days is the rule of thumb for both the boat and the bed.

On tourist tax, we could not verify a municipal per-night rate applying to a Benagil stay, so we give no percentage and no euro figure. If one applies, it will appear on your booking confirmation or be collected at check-in, and it is worth asking before you hand over a card.

The one place where spending more genuinely changes May is getting there and getting out early. A car turns the hamlet into a base for the whole coast, and an early boat slot uses the light that starts at 6:21 a.m. rather than the middle of the day. Our car guide covers tolls and pickup, and getting around Portugal handles the no-car version.

Things to do in Benagil in May: the sea cave, Praia da Marinha and the cliff path

Coastal footpath running along limestone cliffs above a turquoise sea
The clifftop path east of Benagil · Illustration

May is a walking month before it is a beach month, and that is what separates it from July. Cliff hiking at 74.3°F is comfortable, the same hike under June’s 80.2°F average high is work, and with rain on only 3.8 days the path is usable on most of the month’s mornings. The vegetation on the clifftops is still green from the wetter spring, which is over by midsummer.

The fixed points are short in number and close together: the Algar de Benagil itself, reached from the water by boat, kayak or paddleboard from Praia de Benagil; Praia da Marinha, the arch-and-stack beach a few coves east; the clifftop trail through the Seven Hanging Valleys that links them to Carvoeiro; and Ponta da Piedade at the Lagos end of the same limestone. We could not verify current boat fares, rental rates or the rules on entering the cave, so we quote none. Operators post both.

What the date changes is the gap between air and water. April to May, the air gains 5.0°F, from 69.3°F to 74.3°F, while the sea moves from 63.5°F to 63.4°F, which is no movement at all. That leaves 10.9°F between what you feel on the cliff and what you feel in the cove, against 5.8°F in April and 13.3°F in June. The rock warms in May, the Atlantic does not.

Plenty of the month costs nothing: the cliff path, the beaches themselves, and the second act of daylight that runs to 8:34 p.m. and asks only that you stay out for it. We could not verify parking charges at the Benagil clifftop or at Praia da Marinha, so no figure comes from us on that front.

Benagil in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one belongs to the water. Sunrise is 6:21 a.m., so an 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. departure to the cave still leaves the light low and the cove uncrowded, and you will want that fleece on the boat at 59.0°F. Back on the sand by late morning, swim briefly in the 63.4°F water, then take a long lunch inland while the sun is highest. Walk the clifftop east toward Praia da Marinha from about 5 p.m., when 74.3°F has begun to slide, and let sunset at 8:34 p.m. set the dinner hour.

Day two goes west by car: Ponta da Piedade’s stacks at Lagos in the morning, a proper town lunch, Carvoeiro’s boardwalk in the evening. If one of May’s 3.8 wet days lands on you, this is the day to reshuffle rather than the boat day, and Faro‘s old town and Lagos’s covered market both work under cloud. Move the cave trip to the clear morning and let the towns absorb the grey one.

Benagil in May vs April and June

April May June
Average high 69.3°F 74.3°F 80.2°F
Average low 54.3°F 59.0°F 64.0°F
Precipitation 1.54 in 1.03 in 0.20 in
Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more 5.3 3.8 0.8
Sea, mean of daily maxima 63.5°F 63.4°F 66.9°F

Across the three months the air climbs steadily and the sea does not follow on the same schedule. Days go 69.3°F, 74.3°F, 80.2°F, and nights 54.3°F, 59.0°F, 64.0°F, all from the same IPMA station and the same 1991-2020 period. Rain falls off a cliff: 1.54 inches over 5.3 days in April, 1.03 over 3.8 in May, 0.20 over 0.8 in June. The water, per the marine API, reads 63.5°F, 63.4°F and 66.9°F.

Shift four weeks forward and you buy 3.5°F of sea, 5.9°F of afternoon air and three fewer rain days, at the cost of the summer build on a coast with one small cove. Shift four weeks back and April hands you the same water as May, 1.5 more rain days, and evenings almost 5°F cooler. May is the crossover point, warm enough on land to spend the day outdoors and still cold enough in the water to keep the swim short.

Is May a good time to visit Benagil?

For walkers, photographers, kayakers and anyone whose main goal is to get inside the cave and along the cliffs, yes without hesitation: 74.3°F, 3.8 rain days and 14 hours of daylight is close to ideal working weather. For a family whose holiday is measured in hours in the sea, no. At 63.4°F the water sets the agenda, and it will not be the agenda you wanted.

If that second description is yours, June is the shift to make rather than a later month you have not considered. It adds 3.5°F of sea, cuts rain days from 3.8 to 0.8, and keeps evenings long. You pay for it with 80.2°F afternoons on unshaded cliff paths and with a coast that is filling up.

No other month puts 74.3°F days, green clifftops and 14 hours 13 minutes of light together before the cove gets busy.

The last word

Book the boat first and hang the rest of the trip off it, because that is the one thing in May that weather can cancel and no forecast of air temperature will warn you about. Then build in a spare morning: IPMA counts 0.7 days per May with 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, so something like two Mays in three include one properly wet day. Plan it into the schedule and it costs you a lie-in. Ignore it and it costs you the cave.
