Benagil in July: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and What to Do

July at Benagil is the postcard month, and the figures are calm about it. IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, puts the July average high at 84.9°F (29.4°C) and the average low at 67.3°F (19.6°C) on its 1991-2020 normals, with 0.04 inch of rain for the whole month. Two-tenths of an average July day record even 1 mm. The cove sits under limestone cliffs on the central Algarve, the light holds past 8:30 in the evening, and the sea runs a good deal cooler than the air.

What July takes back is room. These are the weeks when school holidays across Europe land on the Algarve at once, and Benagil is a small cove with one short lane into it. The water offshore averages 66.8°F (19.3°C), swimmable and never bathlike. Hold the bed, the car and the boat before you fly, then build each day around the heat instead of against it.

July gives Benagil 84.9°F afternoons, two-tenths of a rain day and 14 hours 30 minutes of light, and takes back quiet: do the water before ten and keep the cliffs for the evening.

Go for: a hot, dry, long-lit week with the sea as the cooling system, boat mornings into the cave, and clifftop walking that still has light at half past eight.

Think twice before: planning midday cliff walks at 84.9°F with no shade, or arriving without the room, the car and the cave slot already held.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer and one model of the sea. The air normals are IPMA’s, measured at station 554 in Faro, 5 m above sea level and about 37 miles (60 km) east along the same coast, so they describe a low coastal strip and nothing more. Inland hills run cooler and far wetter. No station on this stretch measures sea state, the thing that decides whether a boat reaches the cave. For the country calendar month by month, our best time to visit Portugal guide takes the full year.

IPMA’s file is a station record rather than a reanalysis grid cell, a real thermometer read daily at Faro, which is why we quote it when tables disagree by a couple of degrees. Its 1991-2020 numbers for July are 84.9°F by day and 67.3°F at night. The monthly rainfall normal of 0.04 inch is the lowest of the three summer months we hold normals for, against August’s 0.12 inch and June’s 0.20 inch.

Two-tenths of a day at 1 mm or more translates to roughly one July in five recording any measurable rain at all, and one wet day when it happens. Days at 10 mm or more come in at 0.0. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, 1 mm and 10 mm, so the counts do not line up with the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use. Plan a July day here with no weather fallback and you will almost always be right.

The spread between those two normals is 17.6°F, and it catches people straight off the plane. Afternoons on the clifftop are hot with very little shade, while a 67°F dawn on a boat with spray coming over the bow is a different proposition altogether. Pack a light layer, a hat and more water than you think you need. Our Portugal packing guide has the rest of the list.

On July 15 the sun rises at 6:23 a.m. and sets at 8:52 p.m. local time, 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight (05:23 and 19:52 UTC, with Portugal an hour ahead through the summer). That buys a second outing: dinner at eight still sits in full light, and the cliffs keep their color until close to nine. It also means the sand fills for a very long stretch of the day, which is the argument for being on the water first.

Can you swim in Benagil in July? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea off Benagil averages 66.8°F (19.3°C) in July on the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. Read the small print with it: that average is built from daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour mean would give. Tables that publish a full-day average for the same water will come out lower, and neither figure is wrong.

Walking into 66.8°F water with 84.9°F on your shoulders is an 18.1°F step down. The first thirty seconds sting, the next ten minutes are fine, and children come out shivering long before adults do. Most swimmers want nothing beyond a towel and the sun. Anyone planning a long snorkel or a swim along the cliff line will be happier in a shorty wetsuit.

We cannot give you a wave height. No station on this stretch measures sea state, so we publish no swell figure, and the cave boats cancel on swell rather than on rain. Two moves follow from that. Put the cave morning early in your stay so a rough day still has a replacement, and call the operator the evening before instead of reading a rain forecast. The wider coast sits in our Algarve guide.

How busy is Benagil in July? Crowds and how far ahead to book

July falls squarely inside the school-holiday stretch that the Algarve builds its year around. We looked for a monthly occupancy series and a monthly room-rate series for this corner of the coast and found neither, so we crown no month the most expensive and quote no nightly figure. What the calendar does say: July and August are the two months when families across half of Europe are free at the same time, and Benagil’s lane and parking stay exactly the size they are in March.

Three or four nights is the usual shape for a stay on this stretch, and for July we would have the room and the rental car held well before spring ends. Beds cluster in Carvoeiro and Albufeira rather than in the cove itself, which our where to stay guide sets out. The cave boat works differently, booked inside the same week, because operators shuffle departures when the swell builds.

On tax we have to say plainly what we do not know. We could not verify a municipal tourist tax applying to accommodation at Benagil, so we give no per-night amount and no percentage. Portuguese municipalities set their own rates and change the months they apply to, so read the line on your own booking confirmation, and budget the trip as a whole with our Portugal costs guide.

If you pay more for one thing in July, pay for location. A room within walking distance of the cliff path puts you at the cove before the lane fills and off the sand before the air reaches 84.9°F, with no drive at either end of the day. Two upgrades that change nothing: a bigger car for a lane that stays narrow, and a sea-view terrace you will use for ninety minutes of a 14-hour 30-minute day.

Things to do in Benagil in July

July hands you a long day and almost no chance of losing it to weather. With 14 hours 30 minutes of light and a rain count of 0.2 days, one date can hold a boat at eight, a swim before ten, four hours out of the sun, and a clifftop walk that starts at seven in the evening and still finishes in daylight. Few months anywhere let you stack four outings without a contingency.

Praia de Benagil is the beach you swim from, that 66.8°F water at the bottom of a short walk down from the village. Algar de Benagil, the cave with the hole in its roof, is reached from the water by boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. West along the cliffs lie Praia do Carvalho and then Carvoeiro, east lies Praia da Marinha. Further along the coast, the arches of Ponta da Piedade and the beaches of Lagos need the car our rental guide covers.

The water barely registers the month. June averages 66.9°F, July 66.8°F, August 66.8°F, all within a tenth of a degree on the marine record. The air does the moving, 80.2°F in June against 84.9°F in July. So the gap between what you stand in and what you swim in widens from 13.3°F to 18.1°F, and that gap is the whole sensation of a July swim at Benagil, sharp going in, welcome coming out.

A good deal of July costs nothing at all. The beach, the clifftop path between the coves and the hour before eight in the morning are free, and that early hour is the coolest and quietest of the day. What we cannot price is the water itself. We could not verify current boat, kayak or paddleboard tariffs at Benagil, so ask at the slipway or by phone rather than trusting a number.

Benagil in July: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is 6:23 a.m., so a 7:30 start has you at the cove with the lane still half empty. Take the earliest cave departure the operator offers, swim at nine, and be off the sand by noon. Lunch and a long indoor gap cover the hours closest to 84.9°F. Out again at six for the clifftop path east toward Praia da Marinha, then dinner with the sun setting at 8:52 p.m.

Walk day two: Praia do Carvalho in the morning, the cliff track on to Carvoeiro, a late swim when the sand thins out, dinner in full light again. Swell, not rain, is what breaks this plan, and the replacement is a beach day at Marinha with a village evening in Carvoeiro. Lose the afternoon to heat instead, the likelier event in July, and spend it with the car parked in shade.

Benagil in July vs June and August

Measure June July August

Average low 64.0°F (17.8°C) 67.3°F (19.6°C) 67.8°F (19.9°C)

Days with 1 mm or more 0.8 0.2 0.2
Sea, daily maxima 66.9°F 66.8°F 66.8°F

Side by side, July sits at the warm end of an already warm run. Its 84.9°F average high runs 4.7°F above June’s 80.2°F and 0.3°F above August’s 84.6°F. Nights split the other way, 67.3°F in July against 67.8°F in August. Rain is where June stands apart, 0.20 inch across 0.8 days at 1 mm or more, against 0.04 inch and 0.2 days in July. The sea hardly moves across the three, 66.9°F, 66.8°F and 66.8°F.

Shift four weeks earlier and you trade 4.7°F off the afternoon for a slightly better chance of one wet day, with the same water waiting at 66.9°F against 66.8°F. Shift four weeks later and the gain is barely measurable: 0.3°F cooler by day, 0.5°F warmer at night, the identical 0.2 rain days, and the identical school holidays. The case for moving off July points at June.

Is July a good time to visit Benagil?

Yes, for anyone who wants a hot, dry, long-lit week with the sea doing the cooling. A rainfall normal of 0.04 inch and 0.2 rain days make weather cancellation a small risk, and 66.8°F water is warm enough for real time in it. No, for anyone whose idea of a cove involves having it to themselves, and no for travelers who want the cliff path in the middle of the day.

If that second answer is yours, move to June rather than August. June gives up 4.7°F of afternoon heat, keeps the sea within a tenth of a degree at 66.9°F, and still carries a rain normal of only 0.20 inch across 0.8 days. September sits outside the normals we hold for Benagil, so we make no claim about it, and our Portugal calendar handles the rest of the year.

The pairing July alone gives you: 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight on the 15th, two-tenths of a rain day, and nights half a degree cooler than August’s for the same afternoon heat.

The last word

Decide the boat first and let the rest of the trip arrange itself around it. The cave is why you are in Benagil, sea state is the only thing that cancels it, and the month’s entire rain allowance comes to roughly one millimeter, 0.04 inch, so the sky will not be your excuse. Give July a morning on the water, a hot middle spent out of the sun, and an evening on the cliffs with light still on them at half past eight. Then book June instead if 84.9°F afternoons sound like work rather than a holiday.
