Benagil in June: Sea Temperature, Rain Days and How May and July Compare

An average June day at Benagil tops out at 80.2°F, and the whole month collects 0.20 inches of rain. That is the short version of why the Algarve’s most photographed sea cave sees its boats running all day from June onward: the sky stops being the variable in your trip. What the month does not hand you is warm water. The Atlantic here averages 66.9°F, and it is the same cool Atlantic that keeps a cliff path walkable at two in the afternoon.

So June sorts travelers rather than pleasing all of them. Build your days around boats, kayaks, coves and long evenings and the month delivers every one of them, with 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight on the 15th. Build them around floating for an hour at a time and the sea is still catching up. Where to sleep, how to drive in from Faro and what the cave trip costs belong elsewhere: our Algarve guide and the car guide carry those.

June buys you the longest light of the year and a month that barely rains, and asks you to accept a 66.9°F sea and a cave that only opens from the water.

Go for: a boat or kayak into the Algar de Benagil, cliff walking before the afternoon heat, and dinner that still happens in daylight.

Think twice before: planning long lazy swims. At 66.9°F the Atlantic is a brisk in-and-out for most Americans, and a shorty wetsuit is not an overreaction.

Every figure here comes from two places and no others: the Portuguese national weather service for the air, a marine reanalysis for the water. Both have limits worth knowing before you pack. The thermometer sits on the coast at Faro, so these numbers describe a low, dry shoreline and not the hills inland, where it is colder and a good deal wetter. And no station on this stretch measures the sea state, the one thing that decides whether a boat reaches the cave.

The normals come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, 1991-2020, read at station 554 in Faro: an actual thermometer 5 meters above the sea, not a model grid cell. June averages a high of 80.2°F, a low of 64.0°F and 0.20 inches of rain for the entire month. Faro lies about 60 km east of Benagil on the same low coast, which makes these a coastal reading rather than a regional one. Drive up into the Serra and you are in different weather.

Rain reaches 1 mm (0.04 inch) on 0.8 days in an average June. Fewer than one day in thirty, in other words, and a week here with no rain at all is the ordinary outcome rather than luck. One caution on the arithmetic: IPMA counts from 1 mm, while American tables usually count from 0.10 inch, so the two wet-day totals are not interchangeable. Cancel-the-day weather is rare enough in June that swell, not rain, is what actually reshuffles an itinerary.

Between that 80.2°F high and the 64.0°F low sits a spread of 16.2°F, and it lands after dark. Afternoons run hot enough that shade becomes a planning criterion, then the evening turns genuinely cool on an exposed clifftop or an open boat deck. Pack a light layer for dinner and something with sleeves for a sunset viewpoint, alongside the sun cover our packing guide argues for on the Algarve coast.

On June 15 the sun rises at 6:10 a.m. and sets at 8:54 p.m. local time, Portugal running UTC+1 in summer, for 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight. That is the longest light of the year, and it changes how a day is shaped: a boat at seven in the morning is already in full sun, and the last beach walk of the day starts around half past eight. Dinner at nine still happens with color in the sky.

Can you swim in Benagil in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Benagil averages 66.9°F in June, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. Read the fine print on that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest moment of each day, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would report. The water you step into at seven in the morning is cooler than 66.9°F, and the water at five in the afternoon is the figure you were promised.

Sixty-seven degrees is swimmable and not loungeable. Entry stings for ten seconds, the first two minutes of moving fix it, and a second hour in the water is for people who swim in Maine. Children last about half as long as their parents claim they will, so a shorty wetsuit changes a cove afternoon completely. This is also why kayak and paddleboard trips into the Algar de Benagil suit June so well: they put you on the water rather than in it.

We could not verify wind or swell figures for June. No station on this coast measures the sea state, and the sea state is exactly what decides whether a boat gets inside the cave on a given morning. Operators call it off when the swell runs, in any month of the year. Book the cave trip for your first full morning rather than your last, so a cancellation still has a spare day sitting behind it.

How busy is Benagil in June? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for Benagil, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. What we can defend is the calendar: by climate June is already summer here, with 80.2°F afternoons and 0.20 inches of rain, not a shoulder month wearing summer’s clothes. Plan and budget as if you were traveling in the high season, and use our Portugal trip cost page for the daily arithmetic.

Our own booking habit, offered as an estimate rather than a reading: lock the rental car and the first cave slot four to six weeks out (est.), and the bed earlier still if you want to sleep in the hamlet itself rather than in Carvoeiro or Lagos. Benagil is a handful of houses above one small beach. Nearby towns carry most of the rooms, and they also carry the restaurants that stay open late.

On the tourist tax, we could not verify whether a per-night charge applies to your bed in June, or at what rate, so we print no percentage. Ask the property before you pay and ask whether the quoted nightly rate already contains it, because a per-person charge on a family of four across five nights is not a rounding error. Our know-before-you-go page gathers the rest of the practical layer.

If you spend extra anywhere this month, spend it on the departure time rather than on a bigger boat. With the sun up at 6:10 a.m., the early slots run in good light and ahead of the day’s traffic on the water, and a small craft can hold still inside the Algar in a way a large one cannot. A later ticket in June buys you the same cave with more company and harsher overhead sun.

Things to do in Benagil in June

June is the first month of the year when both halves of a coastal day work. The water has climbed to 66.9°F from May’s 63.4°F, the month gives up only 0.20 inches of rain against May’s 1.03, and the light runs to 8:54 p.m. A full day spent on and around the water becomes a reasonable plan rather than a gamble, which is the practical difference four weeks make here.

The Algar de Benagil itself is reachable only from the sea, by boat, kayak or paddleboard from the beach below the village. Praia da Marinha sits a short drive east under its arch-cut cliffs. The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, the Seven Hanging Valleys footpath, links Marinha with Praia de Vale Centeanes along the clifftop. West of all of it, the stacks and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade make the obvious second boat day.

What June changes at those places is the air, not the water. The sea barely moves between now and July, while the afternoon climbs from 80.2°F toward 84.9°F, and the cliff path carries almost no shade along its whole length. Walk it early, before the 80.2°F average has assembled itself, and keep the middle of the day for a cove with water at your feet. The gap between air and sea, 13.3°F in June, is what makes a swim feel like a reward.

The walking costs nothing. The clifftop path, the beach steps and the boardwalks along the cliffs are free to use, and in a month with 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight you can fit a dawn stretch and an evening stretch around a paid boat trip. We could not verify parking charges at Praia da Marinha or in Benagil village for June, so carry small change on the assumption that one of them wants it.

Benagil in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Sunrise at 6:10 a.m. means you are at the beach by seven without setting an alarm you resent. Take the earliest boat or kayak into the Algar, be back on sand by ten, then drive to Praia da Marinha before the parking fills. Midday goes indoors or under an umbrella while the thermometer works toward 80.2°F. Swim at five when the sea is at its daily warmest, then take the cliff at Carvoeiro for the 8:54 p.m. sunset and eat afterward.

Day two. Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys path from Marinha early, turning back whenever the shade runs out, and spend the afternoon at Lagos and Ponta da Piedade. If the swell has canceled your boat, swap the days outright: the path, the towns and the beaches all work in wind that stops a cave trip. On the rare wet day, 0.8 of them in an average June, drive inland for lunch and come back for the evening light.

Benagil in June vs May and July

Month Average high Average low Precipitation Days ≥ 1 mm (0.04 in) Sea surface
May 74.3°F 59.0°F 1.03 in 3.8 63.4°F
June 80.2°F 64.0°F 0.20 in 0.8 66.9°F
July 84.9°F 67.3°F 0.04 in 0.2 66.8°F

Air temperature climbs steadily across the three months, 74.3°F to 80.2°F to 84.9°F, and the rain falls away almost to nothing, from 1.03 inches in May to 0.20 in June and 0.04 in July. The water does not follow that curve. In the 2015-2024 marine average, June’s 66.9°F sits a tenth of a degree above July’s 66.8°F, so waiting a month buys hotter afternoons and drier skies, not a warmer swim.

Shift back four weeks to May and you give up 5.9°F of afternoon warmth and 3.5°F of sea, and you take on nearly five times the wet days, 3.8 against 0.8. Shift forward to July and you gain 4.7°F of air with no gain in the water, on a coast where shade is the scarce commodity. Our best-time-to-visit page runs the same comparison across all twelve months, and May and July each get their own full reading.

Is June a good time to visit Benagil?

Yes, and emphatically so for anyone whose vacation runs on boats, kayaks, coastal walking and late dinners. A month that rains 0.20 inches and gives 14 hours 45 minutes of light is as close to a scheduling guarantee as this coast offers. It is a weaker month for the traveler who pictures hours of drifting in warm water, and for anyone with small children who expects the Mediterranean and meets a 66.9°F Atlantic instead.

If that second description fits, July is your month rather than August by default: 84.9°F afternoons and 0.04 inches of rain make the air do the warming the sea will not. If crowds worry you more than temperature does, May is the trade, at the price of 3.8 wet days and a sea at 63.4°F. Flights and routing into Faro are covered in our flights guide.

No other month puts the year’s longest daylight, a near-dry rain column and a sea already past 66°F on the same calendar page.

The last word

Book three or four nights, put the cave on your first morning, and let the swell forecast rather than the rain forecast run your week. One last figure to settle the nerves of anyone watching a June sky: a genuine soaking, 10 mm or 0.39 inch in a day, averages 0.2 days per June at Faro. That is one June in five that sees a single properly wet day, and four out of five that see none at all.
