TAVIRA · MARCH · 37.13° N
Tavira in March sits between two seasons. The average high reaches 66.0°F and the average low drops to 51.4°F, so a day here means shirtsleeves at two in the afternoon and a jacket by seven in the evening. Twelve hours of daylight on the 15th leave room for the island, the salt pans and a long lunch in the same day.
What March withholds is the swim. The sea surface off Tavira averages 60.9°F, and that reading is a mean of daily maxima, so the water you step into is often a shade cooler than the number suggests. If the trip is built around swimming, April and its 63.5°F are the better bet.

TAVIRA IN MARCH · EASTERN ALGARVE
March gives Tavira walkable 66.0°F afternoons and twelve hours of light, and takes the swim away: the sea averages 60.9°F, colder than February’s.
SHOULDER MONTH · WETSUIT WATER · 12 HOURS OF DAYLIGHT · 5.6 RAIN DAYS
Go for: lagoon walks and salt pan tracks at a comfortable 66.0°F, the old town working as a town, and two full days of usable light without summer heat.
Think twice before: booking March as a beach week. At 60.9°F the water is wetsuit territory, and nights at 51.4°F need a heated room.

Every figure here comes from one low coastal station and one marine model, both named in full below. Where we have no data, we say so rather than guess. Crowd levels, room rates and any municipal tourist tax fall in that category for Tavira, and the wider coast is covered in our Algarve guide.
Tavira weather in March: average highs, lows and rain days
| Tavira, March | Normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 66.0°F |
| Average low | 51.4°F |
| Precipitation | 1.84 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 5.6 |
| Days with 0.39 in (10 mm) or more | 1.6 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima 2015-2024 | 60.9°F |
| Daylight on March 15 | 12 h 00 m |
The air figures come from IPMA, Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute, and specifically from its 1991-2020 normals for station 554 at Faro, a real thermometer 5.0 m above sea level just west of Tavira on the same sheltered eastern stretch. March averages a high of 66.0°F, a low of 51.4°F and 1.84 inches of rain. Those readings describe this flat coastline and nothing else. The hills inland run colder and a good deal wetter, so nobody should pack for a Serra walk on a Faro number.
Rain reaches the gauge on 5.6 days in an average March, counting any day with 0.04 inch (1 mm) or more. That threshold belongs to IPMA and is not the 0.10-inch cut-off American tables use, so the two counts do not swap. Put plainly, roughly one March day in five records measurable rain and four out of five stay dry, which makes the planning question which afternoon to keep flexible rather than whether to bring a coat at all.
Between the 66.0°F midday and the 51.4°F before dawn sits a spread of 14.6°F, wide enough that one layer will fail you twice a day. A fleece that packs small, a rain shell for those 5.6 days and shoes that handle cobbles cover it, and our packing guide has the full list. Thick-walled Algarve houses hold the night temperature into the morning, so the indoor reading can lag the outdoor one.
On March 15 the sun rises at 6:40 a.m. and sets at 6:40 p.m. local time, giving 12 hours 00 minutes of daylight, the equinox balance almost to the minute. A 5 p.m. crossing back from Ilha de Tavira still lands you on the quay with light to spare. Dinner in Portugal starts late enough that you will eat after dark whatever you do with the afternoon.
Can you swim in Tavira in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Tavira averages 60.9°F in March, from the Open-Meteo Marine API averaged over 2015-2024. Read the fine print on that one: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading each day produces, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. When another table shows you a cooler number, check what it is averaging before deciding the two sources disagree.
Sixty-one degrees is wetsuit water for anything longer than a few minutes. A shortie turns it into a comfortable half hour off the ocean side of Ilha de Tavira. Without one, count on a hard gasp going in, numb feet within ten minutes, and a long shiver after. Children last less than adults do. Bring a towel and something warm to change into, because 66.0°F air will not dry anyone quickly.
We found no wind or swell series for Tavira, so no wave numbers appear here. The geography we can state: the town sits behind the Ria Formosa, and the sand islands take the Atlantic first, so the channels and the mudflat shore stay flat while the ocean beach gets whatever the day sends. Check a marine forecast the morning of a crossing rather than the night before.
How busy is Tavira in March? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
The Algarve’s crowd and price peak is the summer, and March sits well ahead of it on the calendar. That is as far as the data lets us go. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate table for Tavira, so we crown no month the cheapest and none the busiest. Treat the town as a working town in March rather than a resort in full swing.
With no lead-time figures in hand, we give no week count for booking. The move that pays is a different one: confirm hours, not just availability. The Quatro Águas ferry, the camera obscura at the Torre de Tavira and plenty of kitchens run reduced winter schedules into the spring, and we could not verify which ones change on which date. A message the week before saves an afternoon. For the flight side, start with our guide to flying in.
We could not verify whether Tavira levies a municipal tourist tax, or at what rate, so no per-night figure appears. Ask at check-in what gets added to the room rate, and treat any amount quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed until the municipality publishes it. The broader daily arithmetic of a Portugal trip lives in our cost guide.
One upgrade genuinely changes this month: a room with real heating. With lows at 51.4°F and 1.84 inches of rain spread across the calendar, the gap between a stone-floored rental with a plug-in heater and a properly heated apartment is the gap between an indoor evening and a second walk. A car is the other line worth funding, since the salt pan tracks and the eastern beaches are awkward without one. Our rental guide covers the tolls.
Things to do in Tavira in March

March opens ground that July closes. The salt pan tracks east of town, the Ria Formosa boardwalks and the climb to the castle garden are all pleasant at a 66.0°F midday, and the same routes in high summer turn into heat management. Birdwatchers work the lagoon through the cool months, though we found no March census to attach a number to.
Start in the middle of town: the Praça da República on the Gilão, the low bridge everyone photographs, and the municipal market across the water. Above them stand the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo and the castle garden, which give you the roofline. The Torre de Tavira holds a camera obscura that projects the streets onto a table, and the ferry to Ilha de Tavira leaves from Quatro Águas at the river mouth. We did not verify March fares or timetables for either the ferry or the tower, so confirm both with the operator before building a day around them.
Out at the island the arithmetic is blunt. Air reaches 66.0°F at midday while the water holds at 60.9°F, so the sand is for walking, lunch and the dunes, and the swim is a two-minute dare. Inland the calculation flips. A church interior and a castle garden are the same object in any month, and it is the air that decides how long you stay in them, which March gets right and August does not.
We could not verify any free-admission day or month at Tavira’s ticketed sites, so plan on buying entry. What costs nothing is a fair share of the good part: the salt pan tracks, the riverfront, the market hall, the sandbar beaches once you have paid the crossing, and the tide emptying the channel at Quatro Águas. On the 5.6 rain days, an indoor hour is the cheapest thing on the list.
Tavira in March: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs between a 6:40 a.m. sunrise and a 6:40 p.m. sunset. Coffee by 9 and the market by 9:30 while it is still trading. Take the castle garden and Santa Maria do Castelo before 11, with the air still climbing toward its 66.0°F. Lunch at 1, then the mid-afternoon ferry from Quatro Águas, which puts you on Ilha de Tavira for the warmest stretch and back on the quay in daylight. The hours between sunset and a late Portuguese dinner are for a shower and a glass of something.
Day two goes east and low: salt pans and lagoon paths in the morning, then Faro by train or car for the afternoon if the sky holds. If it turns, reverse the order. The camera obscura, the church, the market and a two-hour lunch fill a wet afternoon without leaving the old town, and the eastern beaches keep until the following day.
Tavira in March vs February and April
| Measure | February | March | April |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 62.6°F | 66.0°F | 69.3°F |
| Average low | 47.8°F | 51.4°F | 54.3°F |
| Precipitation | 1.65 in | 1.84 in | 1.54 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 5.4 | 5.6 | 5.3 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 61.3°F | 60.9°F | 63.5°F |
Set the three beside each other and March is the wet one. Its 1.84 inches beat February’s 1.65 and April’s 1.54, and its 5.6 rain days top both neighbors. Air temperature climbs steadily across the trio: the 66.0°F high runs 3.4°F above February and 3.3°F below April, with the lows following the same ladder at 47.8, 51.4 and 54.3°F. The sea keeps its own delay. March water averages 60.9°F, below February’s 61.3°F, and April at 63.5°F is the first of the three to gain.
Move four weeks later and you buy 3.3°F of afternoon air, 2.6°F of sea and 0.30 inch less rain. Move four weeks earlier and February hands back a marginally warmer sea at 61.3°F, which is not a temperature anyone swims in anyway, while costing 3.4°F of daytime warmth. Whether April’s extra visitors cancel April’s extra heat, we cannot tell you: no occupancy data for either month reached us.
Is March a good time to visit Tavira?
Yes for walkers, birdwatchers and anyone who wants the eastern Algarve as a town rather than a beach club. A 66.0°F afternoon and twelve hours of light make a generous budget for two days. No for swimmers and no for sun-loungers: 60.9°F water and 51.4°F nights do not add up to a beach holiday, whatever the photographs of the sandbars promise.
If the water is the point of the trip, wait. April alone adds 2.6°F to the sea and 3.3°F to the air, and the curve keeps rising after that. The twelve-month view sits in our best-time-to-visit page, and the coast as a whole in the Algarve guide.
The thing March holds and no other month repeats: 12 hours 00 minutes of daylight on the 15th, with afternoons warm enough to spend all of it outside.
The last word
Decide on the water first, because everything else follows it. If you can travel without swimming, book March, give the town two full days and the lagoon a third. If you cannot, no jacket fixes 60.9°F and the sea will not reach you until later in spring. One number to pack around: an average March records 1.6 days with 0.39 inch of rain or more, the kind that cancels a crossing, so keep one afternoon loose and the camera obscura in reserve.
