ALBUFEIRA · SEPTEMBER · IPMA NORMALS 1991-2020
September in Albufeira runs 79.5°F by day and 64.9°F at night, with 0.85 inch of rain falling across fewer than two wet days. Those are the 1991-2020 normals from IPMA, the Portuguese weather service, and they describe a month shaped by subtraction: August’s heat minus 5.1 degrees, October’s rain minus almost all of it.
The sea is the part that surprises Americans. It reads 65.4°F, a full 14.1 degrees below the daytime air, and even that figure flatters the water slightly, since it averages daily maxima rather than the whole 24 hours. Anyone who packed for a Mediterranean postcard is about to meet the Atlantic.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ALBUFEIRA IN SEPTEMBER
September hands Albufeira a 79.5°F day, under an inch of rain and a 65.4°F sea: warm enough to swim, as long as you do not need the water to be warm.
AVG HIGH 79.5°F · SEA 65.4°F · 1.9 WET DAYS · 12H 27M OF DAYLIGHT ON SEP 15
Go for: cliff walking at 79.5°F instead of August’s 84.6°F, boat mornings with the monthly rain still under an inch, and light on the beach until nearly eight.
Think twice before: counting on a warm sea. The 65.4°F average is built from daily maxima, so a round-the-clock reading sits a shade below it.

The air readings come from a thermometer at Faro, 5 meters above sea level. The sea reading comes from a marine model averaged over ten years. They are two different kinds of measurement, and the difference matters when they disagree, as they do below. For the town itself, its beaches and its beds, our Algarve guide covers the coast end to end and where to stay in Portugal covers the bases.

Every air figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese weather service, and specifically from station 554 at Faro: a real thermometer 5 meters above sea level, not a model grid cell. Its 1991-2020 normal for September is 79.5°F by day, 64.9°F at night and 0.85 inch of rain. One caveat travels with those numbers. Faro sits at the eastern end of the Algarve while Albufeira is central, so the readings describe a coastal strip, and the high ground inland runs colder and considerably wetter than anything in that table.
Measurable rain, at the service’s own 0.04-inch threshold, falls on 1.9 days in an average September, roughly one day in sixteen. A proper soaking of 0.39 inch or more turns up 0.7 times, which works out to about seven such days across ten Septembers. American forecast tables usually count wet days at 0.10 inch, so these counts do not swap cleanly with the ones on a US weather page. With 0.85 inch arriving over two days, the rain comes in bursts rather than drizzle.
Nights fall to 64.9°F, which is 14.6 degrees below the daytime normal and enough to end the evening on a terrace in bare arms only if you enjoy it. A linen shirt, a light sweater and one pair of long pants cover every hour after dark. Nothing heavier belongs in the bag, as our packing guide works through in more detail.
On September 15 the sun rises at 07:13 and sets at 19:40 local time, giving 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight. That sunset still leaves usable beach light after seven, so a long lunch no longer costs the afternoon. The sunrise matters as much: 07:13 puts an empty stretch of sand within reach of anyone willing to leave before the hotel breakfast opens.
Can you swim in Albufeira in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Albufeira averages 65.4°F in September. That comes from the Open-Meteo Marine series, averaged over 2015 to 2024, and it is the mean of daily maxima, not of full 24-hour days. In other words it is the warm end of each day’s water, a shade above what a round-the-clock average would give. Different source, different period and different method from the air normals above, and worth keeping straight before comparing the two.
In practice, 65.4°F is pool-cold rather than tropical. Most swimmers go in by stages, then find the first minute is the whole problem. The 79.5°F air does the rest of the work, because getting out is warm even late in the afternoon. Surfers and anyone planning long sessions will want a wetsuit, and the lesson schools along the Algarve coast supply them as a matter of course.
We found no wind or swell series for September off Albufeira, so we give no figures for either. The marine numbers hold one oddity we will not smooth over: the same series reads 66.8°F in August and 67.3°F in October, making October the warmest of the three. That does not track the air at all, and since it is modeled data rather than a buoy, we serve it as it stands.
How busy is Albufeira in September? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Albufeira, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What is datable is the calendar itself: much of Europe goes back to school in September, and Albufeira’s summer market is built on European school holidays. The weather follows the same curve down, with the daytime normal dropping 5.1 degrees from August and the monthly rain climbing from 0.12 inch to 0.85.
Because we could not verify a booking-lead series, we give no number of weeks. The euro figures that do exist live in our Portugal trip-cost guide, and the choice between the seafront and the quieter streets behind it belongs to where to stay. The date-driven decision is narrower: the first week of the month and the last are two different Septembers, and only one of them still overlaps the school holidays.
We could not verify a municipal tourist tax rate for Albufeira, so no per-night amount appears anywhere here. Read the fine print on the booking or ask at check-in, and treat any figure quoted on a forum as unverified. Portugal’s general practicalities, from card use to pharmacy hours, sit in know before you go.
One line is worth the upgrade in this particular month, and it is the rental car. At 79.5°F, a full day of beach-hopping is comfortable in a way August’s 84.6°F does not encourage, and 12 hours 27 minutes of light is enough for three stops along the coast. Our car guide covers the tolls and the insurance traps that eat the savings otherwise.
Things to do in Albufeira in September

September is the last month that pairs near-summer air with a dry sky. The rain total stays at 0.85 inch across 1.9 wet days, while October brings 2.20 inches across 6.0 days, and that is the difference between a boat trip you book on Monday for Thursday and one you rebook twice. Cliff walking works at 79.5°F in a way it simply does not at August’s 84.6.
The named targets: Praia da Falésia and its ochre cliff wall east of town, Olhos de Água, where freshwater springs surface through the sand at low tide, the fishermen’s beach below the Old Town, and the boat run west to the Benagil sea cave. Further along, Ponta da Piedade at Lagos and the cliff coves of Carvoeiro make easy half-days. We could not verify current boat fares or cave-tour timetables, so no price or departure hour appears here.
What the calendar changes at those places is the air, not the water. The springs at Olhos de Água run at their own temperature all year, and the Atlantic barely moves between August’s 66.8°F and September’s 65.4 in the marine series, a gap of 1.4 degrees. The air, meanwhile, drops 5.1 degrees over the same four weeks. That gap between a steady sea and a cooling sky is what the season actually consists of.
The free half of the month is the walking: the cliff tops above the beaches, the stairs down into the coves, the Old Town terraces at 19:40 when the light goes. Two practical unknowns remain on our side. We could not verify the date lifeguard coverage ends on Albufeira’s beaches, so read the flags rather than the calendar, and we could not verify which beach access ramps stay open past the summer season.
Albufeira in September: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts with the 07:13 sunrise. Be on Praia da Falésia by eight, walk the sand under the cliffs while the air is still well below its 79.5°F ceiling, and swim before ten. Lunch indoors from one to three, when the day peaks. Back in the water around four, then the cliff top at Olhos de Água for the 19:40 sunset, with dinner afterward in a long sleeve, because the night heads for 64.9°F.
Day two goes on the water: the morning boat west along the cliffs toward Benagil, afternoon in the Old Town and the fishermen’s beach. If the month’s 1.9 wet days land on you, drive instead. Faro‘s old walled center and Tavira‘s churches and bridges both absorb a gray morning, and Lagos puts you back at the cliffs when it clears.
Albufeira in September vs August and October
| Measure | August | September | October |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.6°F | 79.5°F | 73.9°F |
| Average low | 67.8°F | 64.9°F | 60.4°F |
| Precipitation | 0.12 in | 0.85 in | 2.20 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 0.2 | 1.9 | 6.0 |
| Sea surface (marine series) | 66.8°F | 65.4°F | 67.3°F |
Across the three months the daytime normal falls in two even steps, 5.1 degrees from August to September and 5.6 more into October. The rain does the opposite and moves faster: 0.12 inch, then 0.85, then 2.20, with wet days going 0.2, 1.9, 6.0. The sea barely participates. All three readings sit within 1.9 degrees of each other, and the marine series puts October highest at 67.3°F, which tracks nothing the air is doing.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy 5.1 degrees of daytime heat and a nearly rainless month, at the cost of traveling inside the European school holidays. Shift four weeks later and you give up those 5.1 degrees plus 4.5 more off the nights, and you accept 2.20 inches spread over six days, in exchange for a sea reading that is 1.9 degrees warmer. For the nine months not in that table, our best time to visit Portugal ranks the full year.
Is September a good time to visit Albufeira?
Yes, for walkers, drivers and anyone who swims in cold water without a speech about it. The 79.5°F day makes cliff paths and beach-hopping pleasant instead of punishing, and 0.85 inch of rain over 1.9 days leaves almost every plan intact. No, if your swim threshold sits above 70°F, because 65.4°F is not going to clear it, and no if you need a guaranteed dry fortnight, since 0.7 day per September carries 0.39 inch or more.
If the cold water is the deal-breaker, August is the answer the data supports rather than October: 84.6°F by day, 0.12 inch of rain and a sea reading of 66.8°F, which is 1.4 degrees above September. October gains 1.9 degrees of water in the same series but pays 5.6 degrees of air and six wet days for it, which is a poor trade for a swimmer.
No other month in the table combines air within 5.1 degrees of the August peak, rain still under an inch, and 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight on the 15th.
The last word
Book the bed within walking distance of the beach you intend to swim from, take the car for the coast either side, and stop treating the 0.85 inch of rain as a threat. Divide it by the 1.9 wet days that carry it and each one delivers close to half an inch, so September rain in Albufeira is an hour that sends you indoors, not a week that ruins you. Pack the sweater for the 64.9°F nights and check the lifeguard flags on arrival.

- Scope caveat: the Faro station sits at the eastern end of the Algarve while Albufeira is central, and inland high ground runs colder and wetter than these coastal figures.
