Best Time to Visit Albufeira: Weather, Sea Temperature and the Quiet Months

The weather station that speaks for this coast records 0.04 inches of rain in an average July and 3.54 inches in an average December. That gap explains most of an Albufeira vacation: a five-month dry run when nothing on the calendar gets rained out, a wet winter that empties the seafront, and two shoulder months carrying most of the summer’s sun.

Most American travelers reach the town by flying into Faro and driving twenty minutes west along the coast, so the month, not the logistics, is the decision to get right. Three figures do the sorting, and they refuse to peak together: the water is warmest in October, the days are longest in June, and the driest weeks belong to July and August.

Albufeira’s year is the Algarve’s year in miniature, and the coastal towns on either side, from Lagos to Tavira, share these normals far more closely than any of them share Porto’s. If the itinerary also takes in Lisbon or the north, the countrywide call is in the Portugal verdict.

Albufeira weather month by month: highs, lows, rain and sea

Nine of the twelve months average above 65°F by day, and the rain does nearly all of its work in five of them: October through February collect 12.30 inches, while June, July and August together manage 0.36 inch. That is the shape of the year on this coast, a long warm plateau with a wet notch cut into the winter.

Two months do the switching. May cuts the wet-day count to 3.8 from April’s 5.3 and lifts the average high 5.0°F to 74.3°F, which is the moment the coast turns into a beach destination. October holds 73.9°F, four tenths under May, but its rain jumps back to 2.20 inches across 6.0 wet days, more than double May’s 1.03 inch. The temperature barely moves between those two months while the sky changes completely.

December is the hardest month for anyone whose days are built outdoors: 3.54 inches of rain, 7.0 days at 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, 3.2 of them at 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, and 9 hours 41 minutes of daylight on the 15th. Highs still reach 62.8°F. The heavy-rain count is the number to weigh, since no other month in the record passes three such days.

Every figure here is measured at IPMA station 554 in Faro, 5 meters above sea level, at the eastern end of the Algarve, while Albufeira sits mid-coast. The air normals cover 1991-2020. The wet-day counts use the Portuguese service’s own thresholds, 1 mm and 10 mm, and they are not interchangeable with the 0.10-inch counts in American tables. Sea temperatures come from a separate source, the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. Inland and on high ground the picture changes: the hills behind the coast run colder and far wetter.

When is the best time to visit Albufeira?

September, and it wins on comfort rather than on heat. The average high is 79.5°F against July’s 84.9°F, the sea holds 65.4°F, a mere 1.4°F below August, and rain comes to 0.85 inch spread over 1.9 wet days. On September 15 the sun is up from 7:13 a.m. to 7:40 p.m. local time. You give up 5.4 degrees of afternoon heat and get a coast the European school holidays have just left.

October is the tempting neighbor, and it owns the warmest water of the year at 67.3°F with days still at 73.9°F. The bill arrives as rain: 2.20 inches against September’s 0.85, 6.0 wet days against 1.9, and 2.0 days at 10 mm or more where September has 0.7. Daylight drops an hour and nine minutes to 11 hours 18. The trade is under two degrees of extra water for three times the wet days.

When can you swim in Albufeira? Sea temperature month by month

The water crosses 65°F in June and stays there for six months: 66.9°F in June, 66.8°F in July and August, 65.4°F in September, 67.3°F in October, 65.3°F in November. The other half of the year sits between 60.9°F in March, the coldest of the twelve, and 63.5°F in April. No month in the 2015-2024 record averages above 67.3°F, so a swimmer used to the Gulf of Mexico should plan on bracing Atlantic water even in August.

One measurement caveat changes how to read those numbers: they are averages of daily maxima, not 24-hour means, so each figure describes the afternoon of an average day rather than the water at eight in the morning. They also describe the offshore surface, not the shallows at Praia dos Pescadores, which warm faster on a still day and cool faster after a windy night.

When is Albufeira quietest?

By the calendar, the low season runs November to February, the stretch that falls outside every European school holiday except Christmas week. Those are also the months when daylight drops under eleven hours and the rain does its heaviest work: 2.97 inches in November, 3.54 in December, 1.94 in January, 1.65 in February. Nobody is here for a beach week, and the town books accordingly.

What a traveler gains is a walkable winter coast. January averages 61.3°F by day and February 62.6°F, which is cliff-path weather rather than swimming weather, and February is the driest month of the whole October-to-March half at 1.65 inches over 5.4 wet days. Golf, the coastal trails and long restaurant lunches all survive these numbers, and the drive from the airport is empty.

What a traveler loses can be named precisely. Daylight on December 15 runs 9 hours 41 minutes against 14 hours 45 on June 15, five hours of the day gone. The sea bottoms out at 61.3°F in February. And December delivers 3.2 days with 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more of rain, the count that cancels a boat trip to Benagil rather than the monthly total.

Which month should you avoid in Albufeira?

December, for anyone who came for the sand. It carries the year’s highest rainfall at 3.54 inches, the most wet days at 7.0, the most heavy days at 3.2, the shortest daylight at 9 hours 41 minutes, and a sea at 63.4°F. For a golf trip, a walking week or a food-led long weekend, the verdict flips: 62.8°F days and roughly 24 dry days in an average month are perfectly workable.

December also holds the warmest water of the cold half, 63.4°F, well above February’s 61.3°F and March’s 60.9°F, so the swimmers who insist are better served then than at Easter. On December 15 the sun rises at 7:36 a.m. and sets at 5:17 p.m. local, which leaves a usable afternoon between showers for the cliff walk toward Praia da Falésia.

Is the shoulder season worth it in Albufeira?

The shoulder here is April, May and October. May averages 74.3°F against July’s 84.9°F, a gap of 10.6 degrees. October runs 73.9°F, 11.0 degrees under July. April sits further back at 69.3°F, 15.6 degrees off the peak, with nights at 54.3°F that still want a jacket after dinner.

May gives what high summer cannot: 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight on the 15th, only 32 minutes short of the June solstice peak, with 3.8 wet days and 1.03 inches of rain. October gives the warmest sea of the year, 67.3°F, half a degree above August, on a coast where the beach parking is no longer a competitive sport.

The subtraction is real on both sides. May’s sea reads 63.4°F, 3.4 degrees under July and exactly the same as December’s water. October pays in sky: 6.0 wet days against July’s 0.2, 2.0 heavy days against July’s 0.0, and 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight against 14 hours 30 in July, three hours and twelve minutes of usable day gone.

So: book October if the swimming decides the vacation, May if long dry days do. April belongs to walkers, drivers and anyone chasing the coast road rather than a sun lounger, at 69.3°F with a sea at 63.5°F that few Americans will call comfortable. Only one of the three is a genuine beach month, and it is the one in autumn.

The last word

Book September, take the second half of the month if the flights allow, and let October be the fallback with a rain plan attached. One thing the best month cannot hand back is the length of a June evening: on June 15 the sun is up from 6:10 a.m. to 8:54 p.m. local, and an average June logs 0.8 wet days across the whole month.
