Albufeira in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and How March and May Compare

April in Albufeira averages a high of 69.3°F and a low of 54.3°F, with 1.54 inches of rain spread over about five days. The sea reads 63.5°F. Those four numbers settle most of the trip: afternoons warm enough for a clifftop walk in a T-shirt, evenings that want a jacket, and water that stays on the cold side of pleasant. Daylight has already stretched to 13 hours 13 minutes by the middle of the month, and the sun is still up at eight in the evening.

April takes the swimming holiday off the table. In exchange it hands over the coast at walking temperature, cliff paths that are pleasant at noon, and a town running well below its summer volume. If you want the beaches, the marina and the Old Town described with no date attached, that is the job of our Albufeira guide. Every figure here is tied to the month.

April gives you long daylight and 69.3°F afternoons on a coast you can walk all day, and it keeps the sea at 63.5°F, which is a swim you count in minutes.

Go for: cliff walking at midday, boat days along the caves, a rental car that actually gets used, and dinner in the Old Town with light still in the sky.

Think twice before: booking April for the water. At 63.5°F the Atlantic is a quick dip and a wetsuit question, whatever the sunshine says.

Getting there shapes the month nearly as much as the weather does: flights from the US reach the Algarve through Lisbon or Faro airport (the routing options are here), and April is the part of spring when a rental car opens the coast road, because the beaches are not yet the whole day. Budget questions sit in our Portugal trip cost guide, and the choice of base in where to stay.

The normals here come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and specifically from station 554 at Faro: a thermometer 5.0 meters above sea level, reading the 1991-2020 period, not a model grid cell. April averages a high of 69.3°F, a low of 54.3°F and 1.54 inches of precipitation. One caution travels with those figures. Faro sits at the eastern end of the Algarve while Albufeira is central, so this is a coastal reading, and higher ground inland runs colder and far wetter in the same weeks.

Rain reaches the gauge on 5.3 days in an average April, counting every day that records at least 0.04 inch. That threshold belongs to IPMA and is not the 0.10-inch line most US tables use, so the two counts are not interchangeable. Spread 1.54 inches across 5.3 days and the arithmetic gives about 0.29 inch per wet day, which is a gray morning rather than a washout. Planning around roughly one day in six is the whole adjustment.

Between the 69.3°F afternoon and the 54.3°F night sits a 15-degree swing, and it arrives exactly when you are outdoors. A terrace dinner is noticeably cooler than lunch was. Pack a real layer rather than a beach cover-up, add something windproof for the clifftops, and keep swimwear in the bag for the hotel pool. Our packing guide has the full spring list.

On April 15 the sun rises at 6:55 a.m. and sets at 8:08 p.m. local time, for 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org computes 05:55 and 19:08 UTC, and Portugal runs an hour ahead in April). That late finish is the month’s quiet luxury: a 6 p.m. beach hour still has two hours of light behind it, and the walk back into town for dinner happens before dark.

Can you swim in Albufeira in April? The sea averages 63.5°F

Sea surface off Albufeira averages 63.5°F in April. The figure comes from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024, and it is a mean of daily maxima, so it reads a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Set it beside the air and the lag is plain: the water sits nearly six degrees below a normal April afternoon of 69.3°F, on a coast where the sun can make you forget that.

In practice, 63.5°F is a swim measured in minutes. Children go in and stay in, most adults do one determined lap and come out, and anyone planning real time in the water brings a wetsuit or rents one. Mornings run below the headline number, since it is an average of maxima: the water at 10 a.m. is not the water at 5 p.m. Expect the hotel pool to get more use than the Atlantic.

We could not verify April wind speeds or swell heights for this stretch of coast, so we give no figures for either. The direction of travel is documented, though: the water gains 2.6°F between March and April, then stalls, reading 63.4°F in May on the same ten-year marine series. For waves rather than temperatures, Sagres and Ericeira are the pages that deal with surf.

How busy is Albufeira in April? Crowds, prices and the tourist tax

By the calendar, April sits in the Algarve’s shoulder, ahead of the summer school holidays that fill a resort town. Past that point we hold back: we found no monthly occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Albufeira, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. Anyone quoting you a neat percentage off the August rate is quoting a pattern, not a published figure. What we can verify about April is the weather.

We could not verify booking lead times either, so no number of weeks appears here. The shape of the decision differs from summer’s all the same. With the sea too cold for all-day swimming, the nights worth booking are the ones with a heated pool or a short walk into the Old Town, and that is a narrower set than anywhere with a balcony. Choose the base first and the dates second, using the where-to-stay comparison.

On the municipal tourist tax we have nothing solid: we could not verify the rate, nor which months it applies to, so we quote no per-night amount. Ask the property directly at booking, and check the total you were quoted against the total charged at the desk. Our know-before-you-go page handles the everyday money questions.

One upgrade genuinely changes April, and it is the car. With the sea at 63.5°F and the afternoon at 69.3°F, the day wants to move: the cliff coast at Carvoeiro, the caves at Benagil and Tavira east of Faro all fall inside a morning’s drive from an Albufeira base. The rental guide covers the toll system and the insurance traps.

Things to do in Albufeira in April

April is the month the coast path works in both directions of the clock: 69.3°F is warm enough to walk in a T-shirt and cool enough to walk at noon. March offers 66.0°F for the same stretch, May 74.3°F, and by midsummer the exposed sections become an early-morning proposition (our call, not a measurement). The light stretches the day as much as the temperature does, since 13 hours 13 minutes fits a morning walk and an afternoon boat before dinner.

Start with what is on foot: the cliff path east of town toward Olhos de Água and the ochre wall of Praia da Falésia, the fishermen’s beach under the Old Town, and the marina where the coast boats leave. Driving west, the sea caves at Benagil and the stacks of Ponta da Piedade outside Lagos are the two headline stops.

The rock does not change between March and July, but the air around it does. April puts a 69.3°F afternoon against a 63.5°F sea, so the cave trips run in sunshine while the swimming stops at the gunwale. The same outing in May gets 74.3°F of air and 63.4°F of water: five degrees more sun on the boat, nothing extra in it. Run it in March and you are at 66.0°F with the water at 60.9°F.

The free hours are the good ones this month. Coast paths, the sand itself and the Old Town lanes cost nothing, and sunset at 8:08 p.m. gives them a long finish. We could not verify parking charges at the beaches or the marina, so budget for them without a figure from us. When the sky turns, the Old Town’s covered streets and cafés are the fallback closest to hand.

Albufeira in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is 6:55 a.m., so an 8:30 start on the cliff path east toward Olhos de Água puts you there before the day warms toward its 69.3°F. Back in town by noon, eat late, then take a marina boat west along the caves while the sun is high enough to reach inside them. Keep the Old Town for evening: the 15-degree drop lands with sunset at 8:08 p.m., so carry the jacket you left behind at breakfast.

Day two goes east or inland. A car reaches Faro‘s walled old town and Tavira inside a morning, and the wider Algarve guide holds the rest of the region. If the forecast wobbles, recall the odds: 5.3 wet days in an average April works out to about one day in six. Swap the boat for the drive, because a rainy hour behind a windshield costs an hour rather than a day, and keep the boat for the clearest morning.

Albufeira in April vs March and May

Measure March April May
Average high 66.0°F 69.3°F 74.3°F
Average low 51.4°F 54.3°F 59.0°F
Precipitation 1.84 in 1.54 in 1.03 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 5.6 5.3 3.8
Sea surface (daily maxima) 60.9°F 63.5°F 63.4°F

Read the three months across: highs of 66.0, 69.3 and 74.3°F, lows of 51.4, 54.3 and 59.0, precipitation of 1.84, 1.54 and 1.03 inches, and wet days falling from 5.6 to 5.3 to 3.8. Sea temperature runs on its own schedule, at 60.9°F in March, 63.5 in April and 63.4 in May on the marine series, so the ten-year average has the water flat between April and May while the air gains five degrees.

Shift four weeks later and you buy 5.0°F of afternoon, a third less rain and one and a half fewer wet days. You do not buy warmer water. Shift four weeks earlier and March costs you 3.3°F of daytime warmth and 2.6°F of sea, then hands back 1.84 inches of rain. April is the middle term in every column except the sea, where it already matches May.

Is April a good time to visit Albufeira?

Yes, if you are coming to walk, drive and eat, with the beach as scenery and the pool as backup. No, if the picture in your head is an all-day swim, because 63.5°F does not deliver one and no amount of 69.3°F sunshine changes the water. Families with young children do well here in April: the sand is usable from morning, and the afternoons punish nobody.

If the answer is no, the next month we hold figures for is May, and May is the better swap for a sun holiday at 74.3°F, 1.03 inches of rain and 3.8 wet days. It still will not hand you warm water, at 63.4°F. For a beach-first trip you want the months after that, and our best-time-to-visit page lays out the full year.

What April alone combines is summer light at spring temperature: 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight over 69.3°F afternoons, on cliff paths you can walk at two o’clock without regretting it.

The last word

Book April for the coast on foot and the coast by boat, and count any swim as a bonus. One figure to carry into the planning: of the 5.3 wet days in an average April, only 1.3 record 0.39 inch or more, so a real soaking is a once-a-month event and the rest of the rain is a coffee stop. Read the forecast the night before, move the boat day, keep the walk.
