Okinawa in December: Weather, Sea Temperature, Churaumi Aquarium and Okinawan Food

In December, the steam from a bowl of Okinawa soba fogs up the windows of a small Naha diner while outside people walk around in light jackets under a pale winter sun. December suits travelers who want a subtropical island without summer’s weight, with time for markets, a castle hill, an aquarium and a few unhurried hours by the water.

What is the weather like in Okinawa in December?

Mild, with the feel of a gentle spring in the afternoons, cooler evenings, and a sky that is gray on more days than in autumn.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Hours of sunshine Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
November 77.0 68.7 4.69 8.2 122 10 h 53 min 79.3
December 70.7 62.2 4.33 9.3 107 10 h 31 min 74.9
January 67.6 58.8 4.00 10.2 93 10 h 40 min 71.7

What the figures change is mostly your wardrobe. Afternoons are warm enough for a T-shirt when the sun is out, but a light sweater or a thin jacket earns its place once the sun is gone and in the evening, when you sit outside at a grill restaurant or walk back to your hotel. Shorts are fine for sightseeing, though people pair them with a long-sleeved layer.

Rain visits on a good share of the days, so a compact umbrella or a light waterproof shell belongs in the day bag. Showers in this season tend to be the gray, drizzly kind rather than the towering downpours of summer, and they leave the island’s vegetation a deep green. Plan one indoor stop for each outdoor one and a wet day does little damage.

Sunshine is thinner than in autumn, and the light is softer, which flatters the red tile roofs of old Okinawan houses and the whitewashed walls of Naha. Daylight ends earlier than in the summer, so outdoor sightseeing fits best into the middle of the day, with evenings kept for food and music.

Can you swim in Okinawa in December?

Yes, for a quick dip, since the sea near Naha averages 74.9°F, a few degrees cooler than in November and cooler again by January. It is no longer the bath-warm water of late summer, so swimming in December suits people who enjoy a refreshing plunge more than a long soak.

Each has its own setting, and in winter they are as much places to walk the sand and watch the light on the water as places to swim.

Beyond the main island, Okinawa Prefecture counts 160 islands, of which 49 are inhabited, spread across three island groups. That is a lot of coastline to explore if you are building a longer trip around the water, and Naha Airport serves as the gateway to all of Okinawa’s islands.

What to do in Okinawa in December

December in Okinawa has no single grand festival to plan around. The month belongs to the table and the street, to food made for cooler evenings and to gentle outdoor days before the year turns.

Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, though gifts are sometimes exchanged, so the season shows up in lights and displays more than in closures. New Year is the real marker, with January 1 as the official date and a spread of dishes called osechi on family tables.

That contrast is a draw in itself, because you can swap a winter coat for a light jacket and spend December walking outdoors in your sneakers.

Naha on foot and by Yui Rail

The elevated line gives you a view over rooftops and lets you move between neighborhoods without a car.

In December the city is pleasant for browsing. Kokusai Dori, the main shopping avenue, is lined with souvenir shops selling shisa lion-dog figures, Ryukyu glass and bright bingata textiles. Off to the side, the covered lanes around Makishi Public Market are a good place to watch the fishmongers, see the pork and tropical fish on the counters, and eat upstairs, where restaurants will cook what you have chosen below.

When the weather turns gray, the arcades and market halls keep you under cover while you still feel you are somewhere.

Churaumi Aquarium and the main island

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is a good fit for a December day when the clouds roll in, because the best part of the visit happens indoors. Visits to the aquarium run from morning to early evening.

Pair the aquarium with time on the main island’s coast. Beaches such as Emerald Beach and Okuma Beach are there to stroll in the winter light, and a sweater keeps off the breeze. On a clear afternoon, you may want to stay by the water until the day fades, since winter dusk arrives earlier than in summer.

If you want a longer excursion, remember that Mount Omoto, the island’s highest point, rises to 1,724 feet, and the hills of the island’s interior are green in winter. They make a change from the coast for anyone who likes a view of the island from above.

The Okinawan table in winter

Taco rice, a local invention of taco filling over rice, is the comfort food of the island.

With dinner comes awamori, the island’s distilled spirit, served over ice, with water or neat in a small cup, and Orion beer for those who prefer it. For something sweet, sata andagi, a round fried doughnut, and purple sweet potato in every form from pie to ice cream fill the street stalls and snack counters.

Toward the end of the month, expect some places to close for the New Year holidays, when many restaurants and attractions are shut. If you want a particular meal, aim for it earlier in the month.

A two-day itinerary for Okinawa in December

Day 1 stays in Naha, where December’s mild air suits walking. Start in the morning on Kokusai Dori, when the shops are opening, and take in the souvenir stalls and side lanes. By midday, drop into the covered lanes near Makishi Public Market and eat at a counter serving Okinawa soba or a goya champuru set lunch.

In the afternoon, ride Yui Rail across the city and spend the hours at the castle hill and old streets of Shuri, once the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom, where the red-tiled roofs look best in soft winter light. Daylight is short, so keep the outdoor stops for the middle of the day.

For the evening, choose an izakaya, a casual pub, for small plates and a cup of awamori. If it rains, shift the afternoon to the market arcades and a museum.

Day 2 leaves the city for the main island and Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. Reach it in the morning, when the doors open, and give the large tanks the first half of the day. Lunch can be a simple soba shop or a seaside café nearby.

Head back toward Naha as the light fades, and finish with taco rice or a grilled-fish dinner. If the weather turns, the aquarium already carries the day, and a covered shopping street fills the evening.

Is Okinawa busy in December?

December has no blossom or leaf season of its own in Okinawa, and what shapes the month is the approach of New Year rather than a tourist peak.

The calendar matters more than the crowds. Rural shops often close earlier, sometimes as early as 6:00 p.m., which is worth remembering if you head out into the countryside for the day.

The pace shifts toward the end of December as the year closes. January 1 is the official New Year, and during the holidays many restaurants and attractions are closed. Before then, the island moves at its normal winter pace, with a slower, gray-tinted feel to the streets and the beaches.

What to pack for Okinawa in December

Pack for mild days and cooler nights, with a little something for the rain.

  • A light sweater or fleece for evenings at a grill restaurant or an izakaya.
  • A thin waterproof jacket or compact umbrella for showers on many days.
  • T-shirts and a pair of shorts for sunny afternoons on Kokusai Dori and the beaches.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the hills of Shuri and the market lanes.
  • A swimsuit and a quick-dry towel for a brisk dip.
  • Sunglasses for the winter sun on the coast.

Good to know before you go

The calendar is what to keep in mind in December. Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, but the New Year holidays close many restaurants and attractions, and January 1 is the official date.

If you plan to be on the main island away from Naha late in the day, have your dinner plans settled before the afternoon ends. In Naha itself, Yui Rail is the island’s only public rail network, so beyond the city your movements depend on other means.

Okinawa in December vs November and January

Moving four weeks earlier brings a warmer sea, at 79.3°F in November, and slightly more sunshine and a bit more daylight, with fewer rainy days. If a long swim is the goal, November is the better pick. You give up nothing on the food, and the winter closures of the New Year are still weeks away.

Four weeks later, January is cooler, with the sea down to 71.7°F, the most rainy days of the three months and the least sunshine. The New Year holidays also fall at its start, when many restaurants and attractions are closed, though the days after them reopen the island’s usual routine. Daylight begins to lengthen again, a small gain for sightseers.

Beach lovers should shift toward November. Those who care more about food, markets, the aquarium and walks in cooler air can stay with December, which sits between the two. Travelers who want the quiet, gray-skied feel of the winter island, and do not mind sweater evenings, will find January fits as well.

Is December a good time to visit Okinawa?

The air is warm enough to leave the heavy coat at home, while the sea invites a short dip rather than hours of swimming.

It suits people who enjoy browsing a covered market, sampling Okinawa soba and rafute, spending a rainy morning at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and walking the hill of Shuri in soft light. It is a weaker fit for anyone whose plan depends on steady sun and bath-warm water, and for anyone who needs everything open around the New Year, when many restaurants and attractions close.

On arrival, start in Naha, since the city and Yui Rail give you an easy base for the first days, then move toward the coast once you know how the weather is behaving. December in Okinawa is a month of cups of awamori on cool evenings and gray-gold light over red roofs, an island winter that still feels like a vacation.
