Okinawa in November: Weather, Swimming, Churaumi Aquarium and a Two-Day Plan

In November, Naha’s covered market arcades smell of simmering pork broth and fried sweet dough, and bowls of Okinawa soba steam on every other counter. The heat of summer has loosened its grip, the sea still feels like a swimming sea, and the island’s beaches and aquarium are within reach of anyone based in Naha. This is Okinawa in a softer month, for travelers who want warm water, a table full of island food and the old Ryukyu Kingdom story without the full push of summer.

What is the weather like in Okinawa in November?

Okinawa in November is mild and still summery at its edges: warm enough for short sleeves in the afternoon, with a first hint of cool in the evening.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Hours of sunshine Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
October 82.6 74.3 7.06 8.8 163 11 h 35 min 83.2
November 77.0 68.7 4.69 8.2 122 10 h 53 min 79.3
December 70.7 62.2 4.33 9.3 107 10 h 31 min 74.9

November is drier than October, though rain still turns up on about one day in four, so a light rain jacket belongs in the daypack. Skies are grayer than in early autumn, which means fewer hours of hard sun on a beach but also fewer hours of squinting at a monument.

For clothes, think in layers. A T-shirt carries most days, and a thin cardigan or a light long-sleeved shirt handles the evening, especially in a restaurant with the air conditioning on or on a breezy seawall walk. Nights stay well above what a mainland November feels like, so you will not need a coat.

Daylight is shrinking, and the light at both ends of the day is low and golden. Plan outdoor sights for the middle of the day and keep the evening for markets, izakaya (Japanese pubs) and the glow of Naha’s streets.

Can you swim in Okinawa in November?

Yes, the sea is warm enough for a proper swim, with the water near Naha averaging 79.3°F, which is the temperature of a pleasant bath rather than a quick dip.

Okinawa Island has several named beaches. Manza Beach, Emerald Beach and Okuma Beach are all on the island, and Zanpa Beach, Moon Beach and Sunset Beach in Chatan-cho round out the list. Each has its own character, so it is worth choosing one and staying a while rather than racing through them.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium cautions visitors about an increase in bite-wound injuries from white-banded triggerfish during their breeding season. It is a reminder that the reef is a living neighborhood, and that a snorkeler or diver does well to keep a respectful distance from what lives there.

What to do in Okinawa in November

The strongest case for November is the table. The month suits long lunches, and the island’s food is built for them: goya champuru (stir-fried bitter melon with tofu and egg), rafute (soy-braised pork belly that falls apart at a touch) and the bowls of soba noodles in pork broth that are the everyday dish of the island.

Okinawa was once the Ryukyu Kingdom, with its own language and culture, and that history is still felt in the food, the textiles, the music and the architecture. November is a good month for walking among those traces, because the temperature is comfortable and the island’s pace is easy.

Shuri Castle and old Ryukyu

Shuri Castle is the seat of the old kingdom, and you can walk its grounds even though the main castle is closed after the fire in 2019. The partly open site still gives you the gates, the stone walls and the sense of how the royal court looked out over Naha. The mood is thoughtful rather than showy, and the walk suits the cooler pace of the month.

Pair it with a stop in Naha for lunch. The city is the capital of Okinawa and the largest on the island, so a bowl of soba is never far. The Yui Rail monorail, Okinawa’s only public rail network, runs through Naha and gives you a way to move between the old town and the modern streets.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

You come for the huge central tank and its marine life, and the aquarium has recently welcomed a new female Japanese sawshark in an effort to breed the species, which gives the visit a little extra interest for anyone who follows these things.

Because daylight is shorter, an aquarium day makes sense: go in during the middle hours, then step outside to enjoy the late light. If the weather turns gray, this is the best indoor plan on the island.

Beaches and the island’s wilder side

The island has beaches enough for a lazy day, and the warm sea of November makes a swim possible. Some visitors prefer a resort stretch like Emerald Beach, others like the open feel of Zanpa. Sunset Beach in Chatan-cho is named for the view, and with the days shorter in November, the golden hour comes at a comfortable time for dinner afterward.

Inland, Mount Omoto is the island’s highest point, at 1,724 feet. The island is long and green rather than flat, and the roads between towns give you glimpses of the interior as you travel. Okinawa Island lies about 400 miles south of Kyushu, and that southern position is why the climate feels so different from mainland Japan in this month.

Do not expect autumn leaves here. The maple color change is a mainland story, and it moves southward from the mountains of Hokkaido and Tohoku through November and into December. Okinawa’s November is about sea, food and history.

A two-day itinerary for Okinawa in November

Day 1 is for Naha and Shuri. Start in the morning at Shuri Castle, walking the grounds while the day is fresh and the light is soft. Descend into the city for lunch at a place serving Okinawa soba or a set meal with goya champuru, then spend the afternoon on the Yui Rail, hopping between neighborhoods and browsing the covered market streets.

As the light fades early in November, move to dinner. An izakaya serving rafute, sea grapes and a glass of awamori is the right way to end the day. If rain comes, the covered market arcades and the museums of Naha keep you dry.

Day 2 is for the aquarium and the sea. Head out for Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the morning and give it the middle of the day, since it opens early and the tanks are the draw whatever the sky does. Eat lunch near the aquarium at a casual place with simple island dishes.

In the afternoon, choose a beach such as Emerald Beach or Okuma Beach and take a swim in the warm water. Plan to be off the sand before the light drops, then take a slow return toward Naha for a last bowl of noodles. If the weather turns, extend the aquarium visit and keep the beach for a clearer stretch.

Is Okinawa busy in November?

November is a transition month in Okinawa, between the long warm season and the cooler winter, and the pace of the island reflects that.

Naha Airport is the gateway to all of Okinawa’s islands and is served by flights from dozens of cities across Japan, including low-cost carriers, so the island is reachable from many places. November is also the month when the autumn leaf season is starting on the mainland, and some travelers are drawn there instead. Okinawa offers a different kind of autumn: warm sea, long meals and the rhythm of island life.

With about eight rainy days in the month and the sea still warm, you can plan around beach time, the aquarium and sightseeing in Naha without feeling rushed. Restaurants and sights keep their regular schedules, and the island feels like it has settled into a gentler tempo after summer.

What to pack for Okinawa in November

Pack for warm days, cooler evenings and the chance of rain, with a swimsuit near the top of the bag.

  • Swimsuit and a rash guard, since the sea is warm enough for a long swim.
  • A light rain jacket, because rain still falls on a number of days.
  • A thin cardigan or long-sleeved shirt for evenings and air-conditioned rooms.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for the hours the sun comes out.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the castle grounds and Naha’s streets.
  • A small day bag that holds the rain jacket and a water bottle.

Good to know before you go

November in Okinawa is a month of ordinary weather, with some rain, warm days and shorter daylight, so plan outdoor sights for the middle of the day. The main castle at Shuri remains closed after the fire, while the grounds are partly open.

At the aquarium, the cautions about triggerfish are a reminder that Okinawa’s reef has its own rules, and common sense around marine life matters in the sea as much as in the tank. New Year closures begin only later, in the winter holidays, when many restaurants and attractions across Japan close.

Okinawa in November vs October and December

Moving the trip four weeks earlier gives you a warmer sea and more sunshine, but also a wetter month. October is the stronger choice for travelers who want long beach hours and the strongest sun, while November asks you to trade a bit of that for lower rain and a cooler air that suits walking in Naha.

Moving four weeks later brings a clearly cooler sea and cooler air, and the days are shorter still. December is a month for sightseeing, food and quiet time rather than long swims. It is also the month when the New Year holidays arrive, and many restaurants and attractions across Japan close at that time.

Choose October if the sea is the main reason for coming, and December if you want a cool-season trip centered on museums, markets and meals. November sits in the middle, a good fit for travelers who want to swim and eat well in the same trip.

Is November a good time to visit Okinawa?

Yes, November suits travelers who want a warm sea, comfortable walking weather and Okinawa’s food and history, and it is less suited to anyone who wants a hot, sunny beach week.

It will please people who like to mix a swim with a long lunch, who enjoy aquariums and castle grounds and who are happy to carry a rain jacket for the odd shower. If you want the strongest sun and the warmest water of the year, look to an earlier month.

On arrival, spend your first day in Naha, where you can settle in, try a bowl of Okinawa soba and see Shuri Castle. Then take the aquarium and the beaches in the days that follow, adjusting for the weather. November in Okinawa is a month when the island feels both summery and relaxed, and the sea is still warm enough to remember.
