Okinawa in April: Weather, Beach Days and What to Do

In April, Okinawa’s cherry trees have long since dropped their pink flowers, and the island has moved on to hibiscus, bright sun and the smell of pork simmering in awamori, the local island spirit. On Kokusai Dori, shopkeepers set out sata andagi, the round Okinawan doughnuts, while the first beach towels appear along the coast. April is the month when this southern island turns properly warm, with the sea inviting and the summer rush still ahead.

What is the weather like in Okinawa in April?

April in Okinawa is warm and a little damp, with afternoons that feel like early summer on the mainland and evenings mild enough to eat outside without a jacket.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Hours of sunshine Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
March 71.4 62.1 5.62 10.9 115 11 h 58 min 71.1
April 75.7 66.4 6.34 10.3 121 12 h 45 min 74.2
May 80.6 71.8 9.66 11.4 138 13 h 25 min 76.8

Highs in the mid-70s mean short sleeves for most walks, and lows in the mid-60s mean a light layer is plenty after dark. A thin sweater or a simple jacket is all you need for an air-conditioned café or a breezy evening on the waterfront.

Rain shows up on about one day in three, so plan for a shower rather than a washout. The month is drier than the one that follows, and May’s total is noticeably heavier. Humidity is already noticeable in April, which makes cotton and linen more comfortable than denim.

Days are long enough to fit a full sightseeing round plus a beach stop, and the sun appears for a good share of the month. Sunscreen and a hat matter here even when clouds drift across, because Okinawa sits far south of the main islands.

Can you swim in Okinawa in April?

Yes, for a short swim: the sea near Naha averages about 74°F in April, mild rather than warm, and plenty of people will find it refreshing and others will keep it to a wade. It is a few degrees cooler than it will be a month later.

Okinawa Island has several beaches to choose from, among them Manza Beach, Emerald Beach, Okuma Beach, Zanpa Beach, Moon Beach and Sunset Beach in Chatan. Each has its own setting, from resort strips to quieter stretches of sand, and April is a fine moment to try one for a morning of sun, a picnic or a first dip of the season. A wetsuit top or rash guard can make a longer time in the water more pleasant if you feel the cold easily.

What to do in Okinawa in April

April is a month for being outside without being baked. The island was once the Ryukyu Kingdom, with its own language and culture, and that shows in the food, the music, the architecture and the pace. Spring is a pleasant time to see all of it on foot, by monorail and on day trips.

The cherry blossoms are not the story here. The local hikan-zakura begin to bloom around mid-January, so by April the pink season has passed, and the island’s flowers of the moment are tropical ones. That frees the month for beaches, markets and the aquarium.

Naha on foot and by monorail

Naha is the largest city in Okinawa, home to about a fifth of the main island’s residents, and it has the island’s only public rail network, the Okinawa Urban Monorail, known as Yui Rail. Riding it above the rooftops is a pleasant way to get your bearings in the city.

Kokusai Dori is the main shopping street, lined with souvenir shops, stalls selling Okinawan sweets and restaurants serving goya champuru (a stir-fry of bitter melon, tofu and egg) and soki soba, a noodle soup topped with tender stewed pork ribs. Side lanes lead to the covered market, where fish, pork and bright tropical produce are laid out and small counters serve a plate on the spot.

Urban shops are generally open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. every day, which leaves room for a slow stroll followed by a long dinner. Pair a plate of Okinawa soba with a glass of Orion beer, or try awamori with ice and water.

Churaumi Aquarium

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is a full outing in itself, and a good card to keep for a showery day because most of it is indoors. Its tanks hold the creatures of the southern seas, and a new female Japanese sawshark has recently arrived there in an effort to breed the species.

Site Open
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium 08:30 to 18:30, last admission 17:30

Plan to spend a good part of a day in the building and the grounds around it, and keep the last admission time in mind when you build the afternoon.

Beach days on the main island

With the sea at a mild temperature and the days lengthening, April is a good moment to head to the sand. Manza Beach and Emerald Beach pair well with sightseeing, while Okuma Beach, Zanpa Beach, Moon Beach and Sunset Beach in Chatan each give a different feel, from resort promenades to open sand with a view.

Pack a picnic of onigiri and fruit, spread a towel and see how the afternoon goes. Even when the sky is mixed, the light on the water is worth the trip, and a swim is a pleasant extra rather than the whole point.

Up to Mount Omoto and into the green interior

Mount Omoto, at 1,724 feet, is the highest mountain on Okinawa Island, with Mount Yonaha the second highest. The green slopes make a change from the coast and a reminder that the island has more to it than beaches and city streets.

Spring warmth makes forest air feel soft rather than heavy, and the damp month keeps the leaves glossy. A day here pairs naturally with a stop for soba on the way back. The month ends with Showa Day on April 29, the first day of Golden Week, so the last days of April bring a holiday mood to the island’s streets and ferries.

A two-day itinerary for Okinawa in April

Day 1 belongs to Naha. Start with a stroll along Kokusai Dori while the air is still mild, and stop in the covered market to see the fish and pork. A bowl of soki soba makes a good midday meal in one of the small noodle shops tucked off the main street.

Spend the afternoon on a ride on the Yui Rail, which gives you a view of the city from above, then walk wherever your curiosity leads, through the shops and cafés. In the evening, an izakaya (a casual pub) serving goya champuru, rafute (braised pork belly) and umibudo (sea grapes) with awamori is a good way to meet the island’s cooking. If rain comes, shops and cafés are your fallback.

Day 2 is for Churaumi Aquarium and the coast. Head out of Naha in the morning and spend the middle of the day at the aquarium, mindful of its last admission time. Eat nearby at a small seaside restaurant, with plenty of options for fish and noodles.

In the afternoon, pick one of the main island’s beaches for a walk on the sand and, if the mood takes you, a swim in the mild sea. The long April days leave time for the sunset before you return to Naha for a last dinner. If the weather turns, the aquarium is already your indoor plan, so extend your visit there.

Is Okinawa busy in April?

April is a lively but not overwhelming month in Okinawa, with a noticeable pick-up at the very end as Golden Week begins.

Golden Week runs from April 29 to May 5 and holds several public holidays: Showa Day on April 29, Constitution Memorial Day on May 3, Greenery Day on May 4 and Children’s Day on May 5. When a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the next working day becomes a holiday, and a day between two holidays also becomes one. That can stretch the break further.

For most of April, the pace in Naha is that of a spring city: terraces open, markets busy and beaches half-ready for summer. The last days of the month feel more festive, and that is the moment to expect more people on the move around the island. Naha Airport is the gateway to all of Okinawa’s islands and is served by flights from dozens of cities across Japan, including low-cost carriers, which keeps the island within reach of the rest of the country during holiday stretches.

What to pack for Okinawa in April

Pack for warm days and mild evenings, with a few items for the showers and the sun.

  • A light jacket or simple sweater for evenings and air-conditioned rooms.
  • Breathable cotton or linen clothes, because the air is humid.
  • A compact rain jacket or umbrella for the showers that come on about one day in three.
  • A swimsuit and a rash guard for a dip in the mild sea.
  • Sunscreen and a hat, since the sun is strong this far south.
  • Comfortable sandals or sneakers for the markets and beaches.

Good to know before you go

The month closes with Golden Week, which begins on April 29, so the last days bring holiday energy. Urban shops are generally open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. every day, while shops in rural areas often close earlier, sometimes as early as 6:00 p.m., so fit village stops into the daylight hours.

May is noticeably wetter than April on the figures, so April is the gentler month for rain. A light jacket is enough for most evenings.

Okinawa in April vs March and May

Going four weeks earlier, to March, means a cooler sea, a little less sunshine and shorter days. It is a good time for city walking and museums, but beach plans are more of a gamble because the water is noticeably cooler and the days are shorter.

Going four weeks later, to May, brings a warmer sea, longer days, more sunshine and much more rain. Golden Week sits at the border between the two months, so the first days of May carry the holiday mood. Plan for showers and warmer, stickier air.

April sits in the middle, mild in the air and in the water. Choose March if you prefer cooler weather for walking, April for a balance of beach and sightseeing, and May if the sea and sun matter most and you can live with the rain.

Is April a good time to visit Okinawa?

Yes, for travelers who want warm days, a mild sea and a relaxed pace without the heavier rain of May.

Travelers who want a truly warm swim, or who plan to spend most of the day in the water, may prefer a later month. Those who dislike humidity should keep the pack light and breathable.

On arrival, settle in Naha with a walk down Kokusai Dori and a bowl of soki soba, then spend the next day at the aquarium and a beach. April in Okinawa is the month when the island’s cooking, its own culture and its first warm beach days meet before the summer comes.
