PORTO AND THE NORTH · OCTOBER · IPMA NORMALS 1991-2020
Porto in October averages a high of 69.3°F and a low of 55.2°F, with 5.86 inches of rain across the month. September takes 2.69 inches over roughly the same number of days. Between the two months the afternoon temperature drops five degrees. The rain more than doubles.
That trade suits some trips and ruins others. Ribeira’s granite, the port lodges across the water in Vila Nova de Gaia and the tiled churches of Braga hold up fine under a gray sky. A fixed week of trails in Peneda-Gerês is a different gamble. Every figure here comes from one coastal thermometer, and we say exactly where it stands before you pack a mountain kit.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · PORTO AND THE NORTH
October keeps September’s warmth within five degrees and charges for it in rain, 5.86 inches over 11.1 wet days, which suits a city-and-cellar week far better than a booked-in-advance hiking one.
HIGH 69.3°F · LOW 55.2°F · 11.1 RAIN DAYS · 11H 09M OF DAYLIGHT ON OCT 15
Go for: Porto itself, the Gaia lodges, the Douro terraces and the old centers of Braga and Guimarães, none of them spoiled by a gray afternoon.
Think twice before: locking a week of walking in Peneda-Gerês or a beach stay at Matosinhos. High ground is colder and far wetter than these airport readings.

Porto and the North weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| October at Porto Pedras Rubras | Normal, 1991-2020 |
|---|---|
| Average high | 69.3°F (20.7°C) |
| Average low | 55.2°F (12.9°C) |
| Monthly precipitation | 5.86 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 11.1 |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 5.0 |
| Daylight on October 15 | 11 h 09 min |
These normals come from IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, and from a single station: number 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras, the airport, 222 feet up (67.7 m). A real thermometer, in other words, rather than a model grid cell averaged over a stretch of coastline. The 1991-2020 series puts October afternoons at 69.3°F and nights at 55.2°F. Read both as coastal values. Inland and upland the north runs hotter in summer and colder in winter, and high ground is colder and far wetter than the airport ever gets.
11.1 days in an average October record at least 0.04 inch of rain, and 5.0 of those record 0.39 inch or more. Call it rain on roughly one day in three, and a proper soaking on one day in six. IPMA counts with its own thresholds, 1 mm and 10 mm, so these totals are not interchangeable with the 0.10-inch counts in American tables. A wet October day in Porto is rarely an all-day downpour either: more often a band of rain crosses in an hour or two, then clears over the river.
14.1 degrees separate the average afternoon from the average night. That is one light layer, not a change of wardrobe: a shirt at two on the Gaia quay, a sweater and a rain shell by nine in Ribeira. The shell matters more than the sweater, with 5.86 inches spread across eleven days. Waterproof shoes count as much, since cobbles and granite stay slick between showers from Porto to Guimarães. Our packing guide handles the rest of the bag.
On October 15 the sun rises at 7:45 a.m. local and sets at 6:55 p.m., for 11 hours 09 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org, converted from UTC). That covers a full day trip up the Douro with a lit walk back over the bridge at the end of it. Dinner is an after-dark affair all month, so put any outdoor photography before five.
How warm is Porto and the North in October?
Take the two ends of the day: 69.3°F in the afternoon, 55.2°F at night, 14.1 degrees apart. Neither end is extreme. September nights average 58.6°F and November nights 48.9°F, so October’s low lands a little above the midpoint of the two. Its high sits closer to September’s 74.3°F, five degrees off, than to November’s 62.2°F, which is 7.1 degrees below.
In practice you dress twice in one day and still pack one bag. Mornings on the riverfront start in the mid-50s, so a jacket goes on for the first coffee. By two in the afternoon the same quay is shirt weather when the sun is out, and a Gaia cellar sits at cellar temperature whatever the sky is doing. Swimming is another matter: we could not verify an October sea-surface temperature for the northern coast, so we quote no water figure. Where sea tables do exist, they usually average daily maxima, and that reads a touch warmer than a true 24-hour mean.
Frost is not an October question at sea level here. IPMA’s October entry for station 545 gave us no frost-day count, so we give none, but an average low of 55.2°F stands 23 degrees above freezing, and November’s 48.9°F still clears it comfortably. The cold worth planning for is uphill and inland, in Gerês and on the upper Douro, where these airport normals do not apply.
How busy is Porto and the North in October? Crowds, prices and booking
We looked for an occupancy series and a monthly room-rate series covering Porto and the north, and found neither. So we name no cheapest month and no busiest one. What stands on its own is the calendar: October falls after the European school holidays and before the Christmas season, and the 5.86 inches of rain shape an October trip more than any rate sheet we were unable to read.
Book what is fixed and let the rest float. Flights, the room and any table you have set your heart on are worth locking a few weeks out; a rainy Tuesday does not need a plan made in August. We have no lead-time data for the region, so take that as our editorial advice and not a measurement. The one thing October rewards outright is a refundable rate, because eleven wet days out of thirty-one means a fair chance the day you reserved for the Douro is the day it rains. Flight timing is in flights from the US.
We could not verify a municipal tourist-tax rate for Porto or for the other northern councils, so we quote no per-night amount. Ask at booking whether a municipal charge applies to your nights and get the answer in writing, since that line is billed separately from the room almost everywhere in Portugal.
If one budget line deserves the upgrade in October, make it location rather than stars. Eleven wet days mean at least one mid-afternoon retreat to the room, and a bed within walking distance of Ribeira, São Bento or the Gaia riverside turns a washed-out hour into a coffee and dry shoes. Where to stay in Portugal breaks the choice down region by region.
Things to do in Porto and the North in October: Ribeira, the Gaia lodges and the Douro

October buys you a full walking day without summer heat: 69.3°F at the top of the afternoon, 55.2°F at night, and 11 hours 09 minutes of light on the 15th. November cannot match that at 62.2°F and 13.0 wet days, and July hands you the opposite problem. Harvest timing up the valley is its own question, and our Douro harvest guide answers it rather than this page.
The list itself does not change with the month: Ribeira and the double-deck bridge, the tiled concourse at São Bento, the port lodges over the water in Vila Nova de Gaia, Braga’s cathedral quarter, the old center of Guimarães, and the Douro Valley upstream. We could not verify October opening hours or admission prices for any of them, so we quote none, and we would rather send you to the operator than print a figure we have not read.
What October changes is the air around those places, not the places. A Gaia cellar holds its temperature all year, so the gain is outside it: you arrive at 69.3°F and walk out into a 6:55 p.m. sunset over the river. On the Douro the slopes and the water do not move either, but the month takes five degrees off September’s afternoons and adds 3.17 inches of rain, so a terrace lunch becomes a gamble and a train window becomes a certainty.
We found no October free-admission scheme for the city’s museums, so we name none. What costs nothing in any month is the walking: the upper deck of the bridge, the Jardim do Morro slope on the Gaia side, the riverfront both ways, the climb through Guimarães toward the castle hill. In a month with 11.1 wet days, that is also the part of the plan you can abandon at ten minutes’ notice.
Porto and the North in October: 2-day itinerary
Two nights in the city cover day one comfortably. Coffee at eight while the air is still in the mid-50s, Ribeira and the riverfront before ten, São Bento and the streets above it late morning, lunch indoors. Cross to the Gaia side on the upper deck around two, when the afternoon is at its 69.3°F best, and give the lodges the middle of the day. Be back on the Gaia bank by 6:30 p.m. for a 6:55 sunset, and eat late, because it will be dark either way.
Day two goes out of town and the sky picks the destination. Clear: the Douro, on an early train along the river, back before the light goes at 6:55. Wet, and 5.0 days a month bring 0.39 inch or more: swap the valley for Guimarães or Braga, where the centers are compact and nothing sits more than a short walk from a café. Keep the last afternoon unbooked, because the day you chose for the valley may be one of the eleven wet ones.
Porto and the North in October vs September and November
| Normal, IPMA 1991-2020 | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 74.3°F | 69.3°F | 62.2°F |
| Average low | 58.6°F | 55.2°F | 48.9°F |
| Precipitation | 2.69 in | 5.86 in | 6.53 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 5.8 | 11.1 | 13.0 |
| Sea temperature | not verified | not verified | not verified |
Across the three months the temperature steps down evenly and the rain arrives in one jump. September to October costs five degrees off the afternoon and adds 3.17 inches. October to November costs another 7.1 degrees but only 0.67 inch more water, spread over nearly two extra wet days, 13.0 against 11.1.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy 74.3°F afternoons and roughly half the wet days, 5.8 against 11.1, with our September page carrying that month in full. We have no crowd or price series to tell you what that swap costs, and we will not guess at one. Shift four weeks later and November gives back 7.1 degrees, hands you 13.0 wet days, and closes the light earlier still.
Is October a good time to visit Porto and the North?
Yes for a city-and-valley trip, no for a fixed outdoor week. If your October is Porto, Gaia, one Douro day and a granite town or two, the month delivers: 69.3°F afternoons, rain on about one day in three, light until almost seven. If your October is trails in Peneda-Gerês booked in advance, or anything involving the beach, the odds run against you, and the airport normals understate what the high ground will do to your week.
When the answer is no, the month to prefer is September rather than November: 74.3°F, 2.69 inches, 5.8 wet days, the same city with the rain risk roughly halved. November moves the wrong way on every line at 62.2°F, 6.53 inches and 13.0 wet days. For water warm enough to swim in, neither month is the fix, and the Algarve is the better redirect.
No other month combines September’s warmth minus five degrees with enough rain to justify a two-hour lunch indoors, all inside 11 hours 09 minutes of daylight.
The last word
Book the city nights firmly and keep the Douro day movable, then decide it over breakfast on the second morning. One figure we have held back makes the case: spread 5.86 inches over 11.1 wet days and an average October wet day in Porto drops 0.53 inch, against 0.46 inch on a September one, so the rain here does not just come more often, it comes heavier when it comes. Pack the hood, and put the cellar tasting in the slot where the front is due.
