PORTO AND THE NORTH · APRIL · THE MONTH IN NUMBERS
April is the month the north turns green and stays wet. The official normals put the average afternoon at 64.6°F and the average night at 50.2°F, with 3.76 inches of rain falling across about ten days. That buys granite streets in a light jacket, vineyard terraces before the summer heat, and no beach at all.
It also buys light. On April 15 the day runs 13 hours 24 minutes, and the sun is still up past eight in the evening, long enough for a viewpoint over the Douro after dinner has started. The question is what those ten rain days cost you, and the figures below answer it against March and May.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · PORTO AND THE NORTH · APRIL
April gives 64.6°F afternoons and long evenings for the price of roughly ten rain days: strong for the city, the Douro and the hills, useless for swimming.
AVG HIGH 64.6°F · 10.4 RAIN DAYS · 13H24M OF LIGHT ON APRIL 15
Go for: green hillsides before the summer heat, terraces you can climb without suffering, and evening light that holds until 8:16 p.m.
Think twice before: locking a fixed outdoor itinerary. Rain falls on roughly one April day in three, and we could not verify a sea temperature for this coast.

Porto and the North weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | April normal, 1991–2020 |
|---|---|
| Average high | 64.6°F |
| Average low | 50.2°F |
| Precipitation | 3.76 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 10.4 |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 3.4 |
| Daylight on April 15 | 13 h 24 min |
Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and specifically from its 1991 to 2020 normals for station 545, Porto Pedras Rubras: a real thermometer standing 67.7 m above sea level, not a model grid cell. April averages a 64.6°F high, a 50.2°F low and 3.76 inches of rain. The station sits at the airport, on the coast. Inland and upland northern Portugal runs colder and far wetter, so do not pack for a Peneda-Gerês trail on a coastal reading.
Rain reaches 0.04 inch or more on 10.4 April days, which is IPMA’s own threshold and not the 0.10 inch used in US tables. The two counts are not interchangeable. In practice you get wet on about one day in three, usually when an Atlantic band crosses, soaks the granite for an hour or two and clears. A wet April day in Porto is rarely a lost day. It is a day that wants one indoor hour booked into the middle of it.
Nights hold at 50.2°F on average and the river adds damp air on top, so the evening is always cooler than the afternoon suggests. Pack a waterproof shell rather than an umbrella, since the wind along the Douro destroys umbrellas, and bring shoes with real grip: Porto’s sidewalks are polished granite and they are slick the moment rain lands. Our Portugal packing guide has the rest of the list.
On April 15 the sun rises at 05:52 UTC and sets at 19:16 UTC. Portugal keeps summer time through the month, so locally that reads 6:52 a.m. and 8:16 p.m., for 13 hours 24 minutes of daylight. Dinner in the Ribeira starts in full light, and a viewpoint at 7:30 p.m. is still a viewpoint rather than a silhouette.
How warm is Porto and the North in April? Highs of 64.6°F, lows of 50.2°F
The two anchor numbers are 64.6°F by day and 50.2°F by night, a spread of 14.4 degrees inside a single date. That gap is the whole planning problem of the month. As for the water, we could not verify a sea-surface series for the northern Portuguese coast, so no swimming temperature appears here. Where such tables do exist, they usually average daily maxima and therefore read a little warmer than a true 24-hour mean, which is worth knowing before you trust one you find.
At 8 a.m. on the quays you are close to the night figure: a sweater or fleece under the shell, and warm hands are not a luxury. By 3 p.m. in sun, the same body wants shirtsleeves and the jacket stuffed in a daypack, whether that is a square in Guimarães or a terrace above the river. Once the sun goes at 8:16 p.m., the temperature falls back toward the night figure quickly.
How many April nights actually reach freezing at the station, we cannot say. The normals give a monthly mean low of 50.2°F and nothing more granular. We found no daily minimum series and no frost-day count for April, so we give no number. On the coast, 14.4 degrees below the afternoon is the working figure. The uplands inland go colder than that, and the normals here do not describe them.
How busy is Porto and the North in April? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Porto or the north, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What sits safely in the calendar is that April lands before the summer season, and that European school holidays move around inside it from year to year. For tiers, sample daily budgets and where the money actually goes, our Portugal trip cost guide does that work.
On lead time we also refuse to invent: we could not verify booking-window data for April in the north, so no number of weeks appears. The climate argues for something more useful anyway, which is flexibility. With rain on roughly a third of April days, a Douro night you can slide by 24 hours beats a rate you cannot move. Routes and fares from the US sit in our flights guide.
We could not verify the municipal tourist tax rate in force in Porto, or whether it varies by season, so we give no per-night amount and no percentage. Ask your hotel to state the charge at the time of booking rather than at checkout, and treat any figure you read elsewhere as needing its own date attached.
The one line where paying more genuinely changes April is the car. Rail and bus reach the main northern towns, and our getting-around guide lays out those options, but a car is what lets you trade a wet morning in the hills for a dry afternoon on the coast on the same day. In a 10.4-rain-day month, that swap is the upgrade that pays. Terms and tolls are in our rental car guide.
Things to do in Porto and the North in April: the Douro, Guimarães and Peneda-Gerês

April hands you climbing weather that July does not. A 64.6°F afternoon means you can walk a vineyard terrace or a hill town’s stairs without the day punishing you for it, and the slopes are still green from a 3.76-inch month. It beats March on light as well, with 13 hours 24 minutes on the 15th and a little less rain than March’s 3.98 inches.
The targets are the obvious ones, and they are obvious for a reason: Porto’s Ribeira quays and the Clérigos tower above them, the terraced Douro Valley upriver, Guimarães with its castle at the top of town, Braga and its hillside sanctuary, and the Peneda-Gerês uplands for walking. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for any of them, so we quote none. Check each operator when you book.
The river runs cold whatever the month and the granite is the same granite in August. Air temperature is what moves: 62.6°F in March, 64.6°F in April, 68.5°F in May. Two degrees over March sounds like nothing and is the difference between a viewpoint you sit at for twenty minutes and one you photograph and leave. The vines are green in April and the valley is not yet a harvest destination, which our September harvest guide covers instead.
We could not verify which northern museums run free days or free hours in April, so we list none. What costs nothing in any month, and works better in this one because the light holds until 8:16 p.m., is the walk along the quays and up to the viewpoint terraces on both banks of the Douro. Give it the last two hours of daylight rather than the middle of the day.
Porto and the North in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one stays in the city. Be out around 8 a.m., an hour after the 6:52 sunrise, when the Ribeira is quiet and the stone is at its coldest. Climb to the Clérigos and the upper streets before noon as the thermometer works toward 64.6°F. Book the indoor hour for lunch between 1 and 3 p.m., since that doubles as rain insurance. Cross to the Gaia bank mid-afternoon in shirtsleeves, and keep 6:30 to 8:16 p.m. free for the riverside walk back.
Day two goes inland: upriver into the Douro, or east to Guimarães and Braga if you want towns rather than terraces. Leave early, because the return drive still has daylight at 8 p.m. and you will use it. If the sky turns, invert the day. Do the town interiors in the morning while a band crosses, then take the terraces or the sanctuary steps in the clearer afternoon that usually follows.
Porto and the North in April vs March and May
| March | April | May | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 62.6°F | 64.6°F | 68.5°F |
| Average low | 47.8°F | 50.2°F | 54.1°F |
| Precipitation | 3.98 in | 3.76 in | 3.37 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 9.9 | 10.4 | 8.9 |
| Sea temperature | Not verified | Not verified | Not verified |
April sits between its neighbors on warmth and, oddly, at the top on rain frequency: 10.4 wet days against 9.9 in March and 8.9 in May, even though total rainfall falls steadily from 3.98 to 3.76 to 3.37 inches. In other words, April rain arrives more often and in smaller servings. Nights are the clearest gain of all, climbing from 47.8°F in March to 50.2°F, and on to 54.1°F in May. No sea figure is available for any of the three.
Shift four weeks later and you gain 3.9 degrees on the afternoon, 3.9 on the night, and a day and a half fewer wet days. Shift four weeks earlier, to March, and you lose two degrees and an hour of evening light, but you get the hills at their greenest and the towns at their emptiest of the three. May is the comfort choice, March the quiet one, April the compromise that is closer to May than the calendar suggests.
Is April a good time to visit Porto and the North?
Yes, if your trip is built on cities, food, port lodges and hill towns, and if you accept a shell in the daypack every morning. A 64.6°F afternoon with 13 hours 24 minutes of light is a generous frame for that kind of week. No, if you came for coast time, since we cannot even put a number on the water, or if your plan has a single fixed outdoor day that cannot move.
If the answer for you is no, take May instead. It runs 68.5°F by day, 54.1°F by night, 3.37 inches of rain and 8.9 wet days, which is the same trip with a day and a half of rain removed and four degrees added. If your reason for hesitating is the north versus the south rather than the month, our Lisbon and Porto comparison settles that first.
What April alone offers is the combination: hillsides still green from a 3.76-inch month, terraces you can walk at 64.6°F, and light that lasts until 8:16 p.m., all before the summer heat reaches the valley.
The last word
Book the north in April and book it loose, because the rain here is frequent rather than heavy: only 3.4 April days record 0.39 inch or more, roughly one day in nine, and the other seven wet days are the kind you walk through. Keep one movable night for the Douro, keep the grip shoes on, and let the 8:16 p.m. sunset do the rest of the planning for you.
