PORTO AND THE NORTH · MAY · 1991-2020 NORMALS
Porto in May runs on long evenings. On the 15th the sun clears the horizon at 6:14 a.m. and drops at 8:48 p.m. local time, giving 14 hours 34 minutes of daylight, and the afternoon normal reaches 68.5°F. Dawn holds at 54.1°F, so the day opens in a sweater and closes in shirtsleeves on a terrace above the river.
What May will not do is dry out. The national weather service counts 8.9 days with measurable rain and 3.37 inches over the month, against 1.33 inches in June. The north is green for a reason, and the month pays off for travelers who keep one indoor hour in reserve instead of betting on a cloudless week.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · PORTO AND THE NORTH, MAY
May buys long light and 68.5°F afternoons for the price of 8.9 wet days, a fair trade for anyone who packs a rain shell and keeps one indoor plan per day.
AVG HIGH 68.5°F · AVG LOW 54.1°F · 8.9 WET DAYS · 14H34 OF LIGHT ON MAY 15
Go for: long evenings over the Douro, cellar hours in Gaia, and a Guimarães or Braga day that still fits inside the light.
Think twice before: building a beach week on the northern coast, since we could not verify a sea-surface series for it and the air still averages 54.1°F at dawn.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA’s station 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras, 67.7 m above sea level, out by the airport on the coast. Inland and upland, the north writes its own weather. The Douro terraces bake hotter in summer, the high ground runs colder and far wetter, and packing for a mountain trail on a coastal reading is how travelers end up shivering. The city itself gets its full treatment in our Porto guide.
Porto and the North weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days
| May at Porto Pedras Rubras (1991-2020) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 68.5°F (20.3°C) |
| Average low | 54.1°F (12.3°C) |
| Precipitation | 3.37 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 8.9 |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 2.9 |
| Daylight on May 15 | 14 h 34 min |
The numbers belong to IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, from its 1991-2020 climatological normals for station 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras: an average high of 68.5°F, an average low of 54.1°F, and 3.37 inches of rain across the month. That is a real instrument at 67.7 m, not a reanalysis grid cell smeared across ocean and hillside, and the difference between those two kinds of number can run several degrees.
Rain shows up on 8.9 days in an average May, roughly three days in ten, and 2.9 of those deliver 0.39 inch or more, enough to end a riverside afternoon rather than dampen it. One caveat rides along with those counts. IPMA measures against a 1 mm threshold, while US tables usually count from 0.10 inch, so the two sets of rain-day figures cannot be read side by side.
Between the 54.1°F dawn and the 68.5°F mid-afternoon sits 14.4 degrees, and Atlantic wind adds its own subtraction on the exposed quays. Layers you can shed by noon do the work: a shirt, a light sweater, a hooded shell small enough for a daypack. Granite steps in Ribeira and the bridge deck turn slick within minutes of a shower, so grip matters more than style, as our packing guide argues at length.
Light is the month’s quiet luxury. On May 15 sunrise falls at 6:14 a.m. and sunset at 8:48 p.m. local time (05:14 and 19:48 UTC, Portugal being an hour ahead through the summer), for 14 hours 34 minutes of daylight. Dinner at eight still happens in daylight, and the last warm light over the Douro arrives late enough that a full sightseeing day costs you nothing of the view.
How warm is Porto and the North in May? Highs, lows and swimming
Warm is relative on this coast. May’s afternoon normal of 68.5°F sits 3.9 degrees above April and 4.4 degrees below June, and the night figure of 54.1°F climbs the same 3.9 degrees from April’s 50.2. Across the month the thermometer creeps up by about a degree a week at both ends of the day, so a trip in the last week of May feels measurably different from one in the first.
In practice that produces two different days stacked in one. Before ten in the morning the quays are sweater weather and the stone has not let go of the night. By three in the afternoon, in direct sun, shirtsleeves are plenty, while shade stays cool enough that a sidewalk table on the wrong side of the street can end the meal early. Choose the sunny side at lunch and the sheltered side at dinner.
We could not verify a frost-night count for May at Pedras Rubras, so we give no number. The average low of 54.1°F sits 22 degrees above freezing, and frost at the coast in May falls well outside the normals, though the high ground inland is another climate entirely. On the water, we found no sea-surface series for the northern coast. Portuguese sea figures generally average daily maxima, a touch warmer than a 24-hour mean, so we give no water temperature at all.
How busy is Porto and the North in May? Crowds, prices and the lodging tax
No occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series turned up in our sources for Porto, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What the calendar does hold is weather, and weather moves demand: May still carries 3.37 inches of rain and 8.9 wet days, while June drops to 1.33 inches over 4.9 days. The drier month is the one the summer crowd is aiming at, and May sits just ahead of it.
Without a rate series we will not invent a lead-time rule in weeks. Two bookings still deserve dates well before you fly: a night in the Douro Valley if you want the river without a same-day return, and a car if the trip goes inland, where the coastal normals stop applying. Budget tiers live in our Portugal cost guide, and the toll system in the car guide.
We could not verify the lodging-tax rate in force, so we give no per-night amount and no percentage. Where a municipal tourist tax applies in Portugal, it is billed at checkout on top of the room rate you booked online, which surprises people at the desk more often than it should. Ask when you check in, and read the property’s own fine print, as our know-before-you-go guide recommends.
One upgrade genuinely changes May, and it is location. With rain on close to nine days of the month, a bed within walking distance of Ribeira, São Bento and the bridge turns a wet hour into a two-minute dash instead of a bus wait. Everything else can be decided on the morning. Where the neighborhoods sit relative to each other is laid out in our where-to-stay guide.
Things to do in Porto and the North in May: Ribeira, Gaia and the Douro

Long light changes what fits into a single day. With the sun up past 8:40 p.m., a morning in Porto and an afternoon in Guimarães or Braga stop competing for the same hours, and the return train still lands you on the river with light to spare. In midwinter that same pairing finishes in the dark, and the Douro drive back is a chore rather than the best part.
The fixed points are walkable. São Bento station’s tiled entrance hall opens onto the climb to the Clérigos tower and Livraria Lello. Below them, the Ribeira quay runs to the Dom Luís I bridge, whose upper deck carries the metro and a pedestrian walkway across to Vila Nova de Gaia and its port lodges. Mercado do Bolhão sits uphill from the station.
Cellar temperature does not move with the calendar; the air above it does. An hour among the Gaia barrels feels identical in May and in August, but stepping back out into 68.5°F rather than high-summer heat is what makes the tasting an afternoon rather than a refuge. The same logic runs inland: the Douro terraces climb well above the airport’s 67.7 m and above its readings too, and May is the last comfortable month for walking them at midday.
Nothing on the free list needs a reservation. The bridge’s upper walkway, the Jardim do Morro slope on the Gaia side, the station hall, and the whole descent through the lanes to the water cost nothing in any month. May’s contribution is the clock: sunset at 8:48 p.m. means the best hour of light on that slope arrives after dinner service has started, and the bench space is not fought over the way a July evening’s is.
Porto and the North in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one stays in the city and follows the light. Out by 7:30 a.m., when the air is near its 54.1°F low and the lanes are quiet, for coffee and the tiled hall at São Bento. Clérigos and Lello before mid-morning, Bolhão after. Lunch on the Ribeira quay, then cross the bridge on the lower deck and take a cellar hour in Gaia through the warmest part of the day, around 3 p.m. at 68.5°F. Finish on the Jardim do Morro slope by 8:15 p.m.
Day two goes inland by train or car, with Guimarães and Braga each an easy round trip and the Douro a longer one, as our transport guide sets out. If the forecast turns, and it does on close to three days in ten, keep the day in Porto and spend it under a roof: the Soares dos Reis collection, the Serralves house and its galleries, a long lunch. Rain here arrives in bands, and the gaps between them are usually walkable.
Porto and the North in May vs April and June
| Normal (1991-2020) | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 64.6°F | 68.5°F | 72.9°F |
| Average low | 50.2°F | 54.1°F | 58.1°F |
| Precipitation | 3.76 in | 3.37 in | 1.33 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 10.4 | 8.9 | 4.9 |
| Sea temperature | Not verified | Not verified | Not verified |
The three months line up almost too neatly. Afternoons climb 3.9 degrees from April to May and another 4.4 into June, nights track them within a tenth of a degree, and rainfall does the opposite: 3.76 inches, then 3.37, then a steep fall to 1.33. Wet days follow the same slope, 10.4 down to 8.9 and then to 4.9. No sea-surface series was available for any of the three, so the water column stays empty.
Shift four weeks later and you gain the dry month outright: June cuts rainfall by roughly 60 percent and halves the count of wet days, with afternoons at 72.9°F. You lose the cool-morning walking that makes long city days painless, and you arrive as the summer season gathers. Shift four weeks earlier and April hands back a degree and a half of rain days for an afternoon nearly four degrees cooler. Our year-round verdict weighs the full twelve.
Is May a good time to visit Porto and the North?
For a walking trip built on the city and one or two towns inland, yes, comfortably. Afternoons at 68.5°F are the right temperature for granite staircases, and 14 and a half hours of daylight let a day trip and a river evening coexist. For anyone whose trip depends on lying on a northern beach, no: dawn still averages 54.1°F, and we have no verified water temperature to offer as reassurance.
If the answer for you is no, June is the month to move to, and the reason is the rain column rather than the thermometer. Dropping from 3.37 inches to 1.33, and from 8.9 wet days to 4.9, buys back most of the afternoons that May will cost you. The trade is warmth you may not want inland and company you will certainly notice in Gaia.
May’s particular gift, across the three months, is an afternoon still under 70°F arriving with evening light that runs to 8:48 p.m.
The last word
Book the central bed and let the rest stay loose. Spread 3.37 inches across 8.9 wet days and the average rainy day in May carries about 0.38 inch, which is a shower and a coffee, not a washout, and the 2.9 heavier days are the only ones worth rearranging a plan around. Carry the shell, start early while the air is at 54.1°F, and keep the inland day movable until the night before.
