Best Time to Visit Ponta da Piedade: Weather, Sea Temperature and the Quiet Months

Ponta da Piedade piles ochre sandstone into arches, stacks and sea caves at the southern tip of Lagos, and there are two ways to meet it: down the long staircase to the cove, or by boat through the tunnels. Which month you pick decides which of the two you actually get, because out on this coast the water has the last word on both.

The short answer is September: an average high of 76.8°F, 0.73 inches of rain across 2.5 wet days, and a sea at 64.2°F. The longer answer depends on whether you came to swim, to walk, or to be left alone, and those three trips point at three different months.

You reach the grottoes by boat or kayak from Lagos, or on foot from the clifftop, so the sea counts twice: once for the swim, once for whether anything leaves the harbor. Both arguments peak later than first-timers expect. The air tops out in August at 78.6°F, the water two months afterward, in October, at 66.3°F.

Ponta da Piedade weather month by month: highs, lows, rain and sea

The year swings 17.6°F in all, from January’s 61.0°F average high to August’s 78.6°F, which is a narrow band for a place people pack winter coats for. The rain is the opposite story. Of 17.76 inches in an average year, 8.61 fall in October, November and December alone, and 56.5 days out of 365 record at least 1 mm.

Between May and June the rain simply leaves: 0.87 inches over 3.9 wet days becomes 0.15 inches over 0.7, and the dry core holds all summer, June, July and August collecting 0.25 inches between them. The reverse hinge lands in October, when precipitation climbs from September’s 0.73 inches to 2.42 and wet days go from 2.5 to 6.7. Nothing in between softens that jump.

March is the month that catches swimmers out. The air has already climbed to a 64.0°F average high, daylight hits 12 hours 00 minutes on the 15th, and the sea is at its coldest of the twelve months, 60.2°F, colder even than January’s 61.4°F. For a walker with a jacket, March is a fine month on the cliffs. For anyone whose trip is the water, it is the hardest of the year.

Every air and rain figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA station 533 at Sagres, 22.9 m above sea level, 1991-2020 normals. Sagres is the windiest point of this coast, and out there the sea state rather than the air temperature decides whether a boat sails. Watch the rain thresholds too: the Portuguese service counts days at 1 mm (0.04 inch) and at 10 mm (0.39 inch), not the 0.10 inch of American tables. When is the best time to visit Ponta da Piedade?

September, and it is not close. An average high of 76.8°F, a low of 62.1°F, 0.73 inches of rain over 2.5 days at 1 mm or more, a sea at 64.2°F and 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight on the 15th: that combination puts the boat, the swim and the clifftop walk on the same day. Three or four nights based in Lagos covers the headland, the cove and a morning on the water with a spare slot for weather.

August runs 1.8°F hotter in the air, 78.6°F against 76.8°F, and 2.1°F colder in the water, 62.1°F against 64.2°F, on top of the peak-season squeeze on rooms and boat seats. October warms the sea further, to 66.3°F, and pays for it in rain: 2.42 inches over 6.7 wet days, more than triple September’s 0.73 inches over 2.5.

Book the boat for a morning and keep the afternoon loose.

When can you swim at Ponta da Piedade? Sea temperature month by month

No month here averages 70°F. Four clear the 64°F mark: October at 66.3°F, June at 65.3°F, November at 64.4°F and September at 64.2°F. Midsummer is the surprise, July at 63.3°F and August at 62.1°F, both cooler than June. The bottom of the range runs March 60.2°F, February 61.1°F, January 61.4°F and April 61.8°F, which is swimming for the determined rather than the casual.

Read those numbers for what they are. Each is the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024, so it sits a shade above a 24-hour average: an 8 a.m. dip off the cove starts below the figure, a 4 p.m. one meets or beats it. Take the boat in the morning, when the sea state at this end of the coast is usually calmer, and save the swim for the warm half of the afternoon.

When is Ponta da Piedade quietest?

November through February sits outside every holiday wave that fills this coast: the European summer, Easter week and the school breaks that bracket them. One busy island interrupts it, the Christmas and New Year fortnight in the middle of December. The emptiest weeks are therefore early December, the whole of January and February, and November either side of the rain.

What you gain is room to move. Beds and boat seats in that stretch are the easiest of the year to change at short notice, the staircase to the cove has no line at the top, and the cliff path walks comfortably at highs of 61.0°F to 66.2°F. By mid-February daylight is back up to 10 hours 53 minutes, an hour and twelve minutes more than mid-December’s 9 hours 41.

What you lose is specific. The swim goes first, with the sea at 61.4°F in January, 61.1°F in February and 60.2°F in March. Then the light: 9 hours 41 minutes on December 15, five hours and four minutes short of June 15. Then the boats. December brings 2.96 inches of rain over 8.0 days at 1 mm or more, 2.6 of them at 10 mm or more, and at Sagres the sea state cancels departures as readily as the sky does.

Which month should you avoid at Ponta da Piedade?

November, if the trip is built on the water. It is the wettest of the twelve months, 3.23 inches of it, spread across 8.4 days at 1 mm or more and 2.6 days at 10 mm or more, with daylight down to 10 hours 14 minutes on the 15th. A walker in a rain shell will barely notice. A family who booked flights around one grotto cruise has bought a coin toss.

November’s sea still averages 64.4°F, the third-warmest of the twelve months behind October’s 66.3°F and June’s 65.3°F, and warmer than every month from December through August except June. Air highs hold at 66.2°F, two-tenths of a degree off April’s 66.4°F. Come with four loose days instead of one fixed morning and November pays out.

Is the shoulder season worth it at Ponta da Piedade?

The shoulders here are May and October. May runs 7.9°F cooler than August in the air, 70.7°F against 78.6°F, and October 6.3°F cooler at 72.3°F. Both sit outside the July and August school-holiday crush that fills Lagos and its boat fleet.

October hands you the warmest water of the year, 66.3°F, a full 4.2°F above August’s 62.1°F, which is the single fact most visitors get backward. May hands you light: 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight on the 15th, only 32 minutes short of the June peak, with just 3.9 wet days and 0.87 inches of rain to plan around.

Each takes something back. October’s 2.42 inches arrive over 6.7 wet days, 1.8 of them at 10 mm or more, against August’s 0.4 wet days and not a single 10 mm day, and daylight drops to 11 hours 18 minutes by October 15, three hours and twenty-seven minutes less than at midsummer. May’s water sits at 62.2°F, 4.1°F below October.

Choose on what the trip is for. Take October if you came to get in the water and can afford to lose a day to rain. Take May if you came to walk the cliffs and want long light with a near-dry forecast. If both matter equally, September lands between them at 0.73 inches and 64.2°F, which is why it wins the page.

The last word

Book September, hold October as the swap if the swim outranks the forecast, and treat November as a walking month rather than a boating one. One more number for the September case: on the 15th the sun sets at 7:44 p.m. local time (18:44 UTC), which leaves a long hour of low gold on the clifftop after an afternoon swim, with the day boats already back in Lagos.
