PONTA DA PIEDADE · AUGUST · THE ALGARVE
The Algarve sells August, and at Ponta da Piedade the air holds up its end of the deal: an average high of 78.6°F, an average low of 63.3°F, and 0.06 inch of rain for the whole month in the 1991-2020 normals. On the 15th the sun sets at 20:28 local time, so dinner outdoors runs long and the cliff light lasts. You have already chosen the sea stacks. The question left is what this particular date hands you, and what it quietly takes back.
What it takes back is water warmth. The marine record puts the sea off the point at 62.1°F in August, cooler than both July and September. It also hands you the fullest weeks of Europe’s summer holidays on a narrow clifftop path and a stairway down to the water that fills from mid-morning. Every figure here comes from a coastal station at Sagres, so read it as this stretch of coast, not as the hills inland, where the air is colder and far wetter.

AUGUST AT A GLANCE · PONTA DA PIEDADE
August gives the driest, warmest air of the Algarve summer and the coolest sea of the three peak months, so come for the cliffs, the boats and the long evenings, and plan every swim as a short one.
AVERAGE HIGH 78.6°F · SEA 62.1°F · 0.4 RAIN DAYS · 13 H 37 OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: cliff walking at first light, kayaks and small boats under the arches, evenings that stretch past eight, and a month where measurable rain is close to a rumor.
Think twice before: promising anyone long swims or an easy first dip for small children at 62.1°F, and before expecting the clifftop paths to yourself in school-holiday season.

Ponta da Piedade weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| August at Ponta da Piedade | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average high | 78.6°F |
| Average low | 63.3°F |
| Monthly rainfall | 0.06 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 0.4 |
| Days with 0.39 in (10 mm) or more | 0.0 |
| Sea surface, mean of daily maxima | 62.1°F |
| Daylight on August 15 | 13 h 37 min |
The air numbers come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and specifically from its 1991-2020 normals at station 533, Sagres, a real thermometer standing at 22.9 meters above sea level rather than a model grid cell. That matters twice over. Sagres is the windiest point of this coast, so the sea state there decides a boat trip more often than the air temperature does. And the reading describes the coastal strip only: high ground a short drive north is colder and much wetter, whatever the clifftop says.
Rain barely exists as a planning problem. An average August logs 0.4 days with at least 0.04 inch, so across ten Augusts you get roughly four such days in total, and most visitors will see none at all. One caution on the arithmetic: those counts use IPMA’s own 1 mm threshold, not the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use, so they are not interchangeable with a US rain-day figure. Compare degrees across months if you like, but do not compare this 0.4 with a number you read on a stateside chart.
The gap between day and night runs 15.3°F, from 78.6 down to 63.3, and on a clifftop with Atlantic air moving across it the low end feels lower than it reads. Pack for two climates in one day: swimwear and shade for the middle hours, a real layer for the eight o’clock hour on an exposed viewpoint or an open boat. Our packing guide has the rest of the list, and the windbreaker is the item people regret leaving at the hotel.
Light is the month’s quiet luxury. August 15 carries 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 06:51 and sunset at 20:28 local time. In practice you get a cool, near-empty hour on the cliffs before eight in the morning, a long hot middle to spend indoors or in the water, and a golden stretch after seven that photographers come here for. Bring a headlamp or a phone light if you plan to walk back along the cliff tracks once the sun has gone.
Can you swim in Ponta da Piedade in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off the point averages 62.1°F in August, from the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. Read the small print with it: that number is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. The water you wade into at seven in the morning is a touch cooler than 62.1°F, and the water at five in the afternoon is the water the figure describes. It is also, surprisingly, the coolest of the three summer months.
In practice, 62.1°F is a bracing swim rather than a warm one. Adults get in, gasp, and enjoy fifteen or twenty minutes. Children tend to last less, and anyone snorkeling for an hour under the arches will be happier in a shorty wetsuit than in board shorts. The sheltered coves feel friendlier than open water at the point, where the swell keeps things mixed. Against an air temperature of 78.6°F, the contrast on the way out of the water is the part people remember.
On wind and swell we have to be straight with you: we could not verify a wind-speed or wave-height series for this stretch, so we give no figures. What our source does say is that station 533 stands at the windiest point of the coast, where the sea state, not the thermometer, settles whether small boats go out. Treat a canceled kayak or grotto trip as a normal August possibility, book it for the first morning of your stay, and keep the second morning free as a spare.
How busy is Ponta da Piedade in August? Crowds, prices and booking
August is the peak of the European holiday calendar, and Portugal’s southern coast is where a large share of that continent spends it. That is a fact of the school calendar, not a price measurement, and we will not dress it up as one: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Lagos, so we crown no month expensive and quote no nightly figure. What we can say plainly is that demand for beds, boats and parking is at its annual thickest while the weather is at its most reliable.
Faro is the arrival airport for this coast, and the drive west to Lagos is straightforward in a rental car, which our car guide covers. Our booking advice here is editorial rather than measured: reserve the room and the car months out rather than in July, and give the trip three or four nights so one windy morning costs you nothing. Travelers who leave both to the last fortnight in August are choosing from what nobody else wanted.
On the municipal lodging tax, we could not verify a current rate for Lagos, so no percentage appears and you should not budget one from memory. Ask at booking whether the quoted price includes it, and expect it to be collected per person per night at check-in if it applies. It is a small line on a summer bill, but it is the kind of small line that surprises people who paid in full online three months earlier.
The one place where spending more genuinely changes the month is location. A bed within walking distance of the cliffs in Lagos buys you the 06:51 sunrise and the 20:28 light without a drive and without hunting for a space at either end of the day. Everything else, the boats, the beaches, the viewpoints, is the same for everyone on the path. Proximity is what turns August’s two good hours into two easy hours.
Things to do in Ponta da Piedade in August

The combination that August offers and the shoulder months do not is a long, dry day: 13 hours 37 minutes of light on the 15th, 0.06 inch of rain across the entire month, and warm air from breakfast until well after seven. That makes the double-header realistic. A dawn walk and a mid-morning paddle, a break through the hottest hours, then a second outing in the evening light, all on the same day and with almost no chance of a washout rearranging it.
The walking is the free headline: the clifftop track past the lighthouse, the viewpoints over the stacks, and the stairway that drops to the water at the point. Below it sit Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana, both small, both sheltered, both sitting in the same 62.1°F water. From Lagos marina, boats run east toward the sea caves near Benagil and west toward Sagres. We could not verify current operator fares or departure times, so none appear here.
What August changes at these places is the contrast, not the water. Across July, August and September the sea moves inside a two-degree band, from 63.3 to 62.1 to 64.2°F, while the air swings hardest in August. The gap between the 78.6°F average high and the 62.1°F sea reaches 16.5°F, against 14.1 in July and 12.6 in September. That widened gap is why an August dip feels colder than a September one at almost the same water temperature, and why the towel matters.
Plenty here costs nothing at all. The clifftop path, the viewpoints, the stairway and the beaches below carry no admission, and the 20:28 sunset on the 15th is the best free show of the day. Parking near the point is the one variable we could not price, so we quote no charge for it. Arriving on foot from Lagos, or before eight in the morning, solves that question without a coin.
Ponta da Piedade in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Up for the 06:51 sunrise and onto the clifftop path by half past seven, while the air is still near the 63.3°F overnight low. Paddle or take a small boat under the arches between nine and eleven, when the sea is usually at its calmest and the light is still low enough to photograph. Retreat indoors for lunch in Lagos from one until four, through the hottest part of a 78.6°F day. Swim at Praia do Camilo around five, then stay on the cliffs for the 20:28 sunset.
Day two takes the same shape with a different target: the western coves early, the old town of Lagos for the middle hours, and a longer evening walk out toward the lighthouse. Rain will almost certainly not be your problem, with 0.4 rain days in an average August. Wind might be. If the sea state cancels a boat, nothing else on this plan depends on it, and a drive out to Sagres or up to Carvoeiro fills the morning instead.
Ponta da Piedade in August vs July and September
| July | August | September | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 77.4°F | 78.6°F | 76.8°F |
| Average low | 62.6°F | 63.3°F | 62.1°F |
| Rainfall | 0.04 in | 0.06 in | 0.73 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 0.2 | 0.4 | 2.5 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 63.3°F | 62.1°F | 64.2°F |
On air temperature August wins, but barely: 78.6°F against 77.4 in July and 76.8 in September, a spread of under two degrees across the whole summer. On rain it is a two-horse race, with July at 0.04 inch and August at 0.06, while September jumps to 0.73 inch and 2.5 days with measurable rain. And on the water, August is the loser of the trio at 62.1°F, cooler than July’s 63.3 and more than two degrees below September’s 64.2. Air figures come from IPMA; the sea readings come from the marine record.
Shift four weeks later and you trade dry certainty for warmer water and thinner crowds once European schools go back. September buys you the warmest sea of the three and costs you roughly six times August’s rainfall. Shift four weeks earlier and July holds nearly all of August’s heat, with half the rain-day count and a degree more in the sea. Our July page makes that case in full, and the numbers behind it are the same station and period.
Is August a good time to visit Ponta da Piedade?
Yes, if what brought you here is the rock rather than the water. Cliff walkers, photographers, kayakers and anyone who wants a boat to actually leave the marina get the most dependable month of the year, with 0.4 rain days and light until 20:28. No, if you pictured lazy hours floating in warm sea, or you are bringing small children who need to stay in the water for an hour. At 62.1°F the Atlantic here is a quick, invigorating dip, not a bathtub.
If that is a deal-breaker, move to September. The sea reaches its summer high of 64.2°F, the average high only slips to 76.8, and the holiday peak has broken. You pay for it in rain: 0.73 inch and 2.5 days with measurable precipitation, against August’s near-zero. For a compromise, late July keeps 63.3°F water and 0.2 rain days, and the wider seasonal picture sits in our twelve-month verdict for Portugal.
One thing August alone delivers: it is the only one of the three months whose average high clears 78°F, and it does it with rainfall of 0.06 inch for the entire month.
The last word
Book the boat for your first morning, keep the second free in case the wind at Sagres says no, and walk the cliff path before eight while the air is still in the low sixties. Then stop worrying about the sky. In the 1991-2020 normals, the count of August days at Sagres reaching 0.39 inch of rain is 0.0: a genuine downpour does not appear in the average month at all. Your planning variables here are wind, water temperature and where you park, in that order.
