PONTA DA PIEDADE · APRIL · THE ALGARVE
April is when the Algarve’s most photographed headland turns comfortable again. Afternoons average 66.4°F, mornings start near 53.6°F, and April 15 carries 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight. The water off the stacks averages 61.8°F. That mix suits walkers, kayakers and anyone who wants the grottoes without the August boat traffic, and it short-changes the traveler whose whole vacation is built on swimming.
What the month withholds is warm water and a guaranteed sea state. Measurable rain falls on close to six days, the wind at this corner of the coast decides whether boats leave the landing at all, and the gap between a March visit and a May one is real, mostly in the air rather than the sea. Below: the normals, the comparison with both neighboring months, and a two-day plan built on April light.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · APRIL
April gives you 66.4°F afternoons, 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight and a sea at 61.8°F: excellent for the cliff path and the grotto boats, marginal for a long swim.

Go for: the cliff path and the stairway down to the water in walking weather, boat trips into the arches before the summer fleet, and evenings that hold their light until 8:12 p.m.
Think twice before: planning a beach week around swimming. The sea averages 61.8°F, and that figure is a mean of daily maxima rather than a 24-hour mean.

Ponta da Piedade weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| April at Sagres | Normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 66.4°F |
| Average low | 53.6°F |
| Rainfall | 1.37 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 5.7 |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 0.9 |
| Sea surface | 61.8°F |
| Daylight, April 15 | 13h 13m |
Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and specifically from its 1991-2020 normals for station 533 at Sagres: average high 66.4°F, average low 53.6°F, 1.37 inches of rain across the month. That is a real thermometer at 22.9 meters of altitude, not a model grid cell. It also sits at the windiest point of the coast, and it does not describe high ground inland, which runs colder and a good deal wetter. Pack for a hill walk from a hill forecast.
Rain registers on 5.7 days in an average April, counting every day with at least 0.04 inch, so roughly one day in five. Only 0.9 of those days reaches 0.39 inch or more, which works out to about one properly wet day per April plus a scattering of mornings that darken the cliffs and clear by lunch. IPMA counts with its own thresholds rather than the 0.10-inch convention behind most American tables, so these totals do not swap with a US number.
Between the average high and the average low sits 12.8 degrees, and on this headland the wind adds to the felt difference. A fleece and a windproof shell matter at 7 a.m. on the cliff path and again after sunset, and by 2 p.m. you will be carrying both. Our packing guide sorts the rest of the bag.
Daylight on April 15 runs 13 hours 13 minutes, with the sun up at 6:59 a.m. and down at 8:12 p.m. in Portuguese summer time, converted from the 05:59 and 19:12 UTC that sunrise-sunset.org publishes. Light that long reshapes the day: the stacks take full sun through the late afternoon, and dinner in Lagos can start before dark.
Ponta da Piedade sea temperature in April: can you swim?
The sea off the headland averages 61.8°F in April in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. Read the figure carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day averaged across ten Aprils, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean would. Tables quoting a full-day average for the same water will land a little lower, and neither version is wrong.
At 61.8°F you can swim, and people do. What that temperature delivers is a short, sharp swim off Praia do Camilo rather than an hour of floating, with a hard entry and a very good feeling afterwards. A shorty wetsuit converts it into a real session. Kayaks and paddleboards through the arches keep you mostly dry, and April’s water traffic here is boats far more than bathers.
Wind is what cancels plans on this stretch. The Sagres station sits at the windiest point of the coast, where the state of the sea rather than the air temperature decides whether a boat leaves the landing. We could not verify a monthly wind-speed or wave-height series for April, so we give no average. Ask the operator the evening before, take the earlier slot, and treat a scrubbed departure as a reschedule rather than a lost day.
How busy is Ponta da Piedade in April? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
April falls in the Algarve’s shoulder, after the quiet winter and well before the July and August peak. That much is calendar rather than measurement: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Lagos, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What the date does change is visible at the landing, where the boat queue in April is minutes rather than the long summer wait.
In April, rooms in Lagos and Carvoeiro generally still exist at short notice outside Easter week, while the rental car is the item that runs dry first, and this coast offers no convenient substitute for one. We could not verify lead-time data, so take that ordering as our judgment rather than a measurement. Our car guide covers tolls and the insurance line.
We could not verify a municipal tourist-tax rate for Lagos, so no per-night amount and no percentage appear here. Where such a charge applies in Portugal it lands on the final bill rather than inside the nightly rate, which surprises people at checkout. Ask the property before you pay in full.
Spend the extra on the boat rather than the bed. A small craft with low freeboard slips inside the arches that a big catamaran can only circle, and April mornings are when the sea often permits that. The second thing worth buying is slack in the schedule: three possible boat mornings instead of one turns a windy Tuesday into a footnote.
Things to do in Ponta da Piedade in April

Walking is what April unlocks. At 66.4°F the clifftop route is a pleasure at noon, and the same path in high summer is a shadeless slog that gets done at dawn or not at all. Add 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight and the day holds a morning walk, a boat, a beach afternoon and a sunset without anyone hurrying.
The named targets are close together. The headland carries its lighthouse and viewpoints at the top and a long flight of steps down to the boat landing. Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana sit just north, both reached by their own stairways, with Praia do Porto de Mós beyond and the flat kilometers of Meia Praia on the other side of Lagos. For the cathedral of sea caves, Benagil is a separate drive east.
What the month moves is the air, not the water. The sea reads 60.2°F in March, 61.8°F in April and 62.2°F in May in the marine record, two degrees across an entire spring, while afternoon air climbs 6.7 degrees over the same stretch, from 64.0°F to 70.7°F. So April changes how long you can sit on the sand after the swim, rather than the swim itself.
The best of it costs nothing: the clifftop viewpoints, the stairways down to Camilo and Dona Ana, the coast path back into Lagos, and the sand at the end of each descent. We could not verify parking charges at the headland, so assume a fee and be pleased if there is none.
Ponta da Piedade in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts on the cliffs. Leave Lagos on foot around 7:30, an hour after the 6:59 sunrise, with the stacks lit from the east and the path still cool. Take a boat from the landing before lunch, eat above Praia do Camilo, then drop down the steps for the afternoon at Dona Ana while the air holds near 66.4°F. Climb back to the lighthouse for the 8:12 p.m. sunset and walk into the old town for dinner afterwards.
Day two belongs to Lagos itself in the morning, the market and the walled streets, then the long flat sand of Meia Praia in the afternoon. If the month’s one heavy day lands on you, drive west to Sagres and its fort on the cape, or east along the coast road. With 5.7 wet days scattered through 30, a soaked morning is far likelier than a soaked week, so reshuffle the boat instead of canceling it.
Ponta da Piedade in April vs March and May
| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Rainfall | Days 0.04 in+ | Sea |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| March | 64.0°F | 51.1°F | 1.92 in | 6.3 | 60.2°F |
| April | 66.4°F | 53.6°F | 1.37 in | 5.7 | 61.8°F |
| May | 70.7°F | 57.0°F | 0.87 in | 3.9 | 62.2°F |
Three months, one clear direction. Afternoons rise from 64.0°F in March to 66.4°F in April and 70.7°F in May, while rainfall falls from 1.92 inches to 1.37 and then to 0.87, and wet days drop from 6.3 to 5.7 to 3.9. The sea refuses to join in: 60.2°F, 61.8°F, 62.2°F, a two-degree spread across the whole spring in the marine record.
Shift four weeks later and you gain 4.3 degrees of afternoon warmth, half an inch less rain and nearly two fewer wet days, plus nights that go from 53.6°F to 57.0°F. You lose the emptier cliff paths and you gain almost nothing in the water, since May’s sea is 0.4°F warmer than April’s. Shift four weeks earlier into March and the trade is 0.55 more inches of rain for the quietest stairways of the spring.
Is April a good time to visit Ponta da Piedade?
Yes, if your trip walks, photographs and floats. Cliff paths at 66.4°F, boats that leave with space on them, light until 8:12 p.m. and only 0.9 heavy-rain day in the average month make a strong case. No, if the plan is a swimming holiday: 61.8°F water, measured as a mean of daily maxima, is not a week of lounging in the sea whatever the sunshine suggests.
If that is your trip, take May. You get 70.7°F afternoons, 0.87 inch of rain across the entire month and 3.9 wet days, with a sea only 0.4°F warmer than April’s, so the improvement is in the air and on the sand rather than in the water. For a sea you can stay in, the full-year view of Portugal points at late summer.
April’s own claim is narrow and real: 13 hours of daylight over cliffs you can walk at midday, which neither March’s shorter days nor midsummer’s heat allows at the same time.
The last word
Book April if the headland, the boats and the coast path are the point, and move the swimming to the plan’s optional column. One more figure to carry: those 1.37 inches fall across 5.7 days, roughly a quarter inch on a rainy day, the kind of rain that ends a cliff walk for an hour rather than a morning. Keep the boat booking flexible, keep the shell in the daypack, and let the 8:12 sunset decide dinner.
