Ponta da Piedade in January: Sea Temperature, Rain Days and Daylight Hours

The limestone stacks and sea caves south of Lagos keep their color through winter, and in January the railing at the top of the staircase is yours for long stretches. What the month asks in return sits in the numbers: an average high of 61.0°F (16.1°C), an average low of 47.3°F (8.5°C), and water off the point averaging 61.4°F. The sun on January 15 is gone by 5:43 pm.

What separates a January visit from a summer one is access to the water and the length of the day, not the cliff. Grotto boats go when the swell lets them, the walking is comfortable in a fleece, and the daylight budget on the 15th is 9 hours 57 minutes from first light to last. Every figure here is dated to January and read off named sources, which are listed at the end.

January is a walking-and-looking month at Ponta da Piedade: the clifftop is quiet, the boats run on the swell rather than the calendar, and at 61.4°F the water belongs to wetsuits.

Go for: clifftop walking in low season, low-angle light on the arches, and a base in Lagos where the old town belongs to the people who live there.

Think twice before: building the trip around swimming or a guaranteed grotto boat: the sea averages 61.4°F and the Sagres record carries 7.4 rain days.

The headland has no town of its own, so the bed goes in Lagos and the rest of the coast stays a drive away. Where to sleep and eat belongs to our Lagos guide, the coast either side belongs to the Algarve guide, and the other eleven months are weighed in the country-wide best-time verdict.

These normals come from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and specifically from its 1991-2020 series at station 533, Sagres, a real thermometer standing 22.9 meters above sea level rather than a model grid cell. January there averages 61.0°F (16.1°C) by day, 47.3°F (8.5°C) at night, with 2.10 inches of precipitation across the month. One caveat travels with that address: Sagres is the windiest point of this coast, and every figure here describes that coastal station, not the high ground inland, which runs colder and far wetter.

Measurable rain falls on 7.4 days in an average January, counted at IPMA’s own threshold of 1 mm, 0.04 inch. That works out to roughly one day in four, and the bar is lower than the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use, so the two counts are not interchangeable. Practically, the month reads as a run of usable mornings interrupted by a gray day rather than a washout, and 2.10 inches is well under what December collects.

Day and night are 13.7 degrees apart, and the cold end arrives exactly when the light gets good on the stacks. A fleece plus a windproof shell beats a heavy coat here, because wind rather than cold is what the headland delivers. Add shoes with grip: the path and the staircase are worn stone, and they stay slick for hours after overnight rain. Our packing guide covers the rest of a winter Algarve bag.

January 15 carries 9 hours 57 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 7:46 am and sunset at 5:43 pm. Portugal keeps UTC through the winter, so those are clock times straight off the local phone, no conversion. The consequence for a visit: the last good hour on the west-facing arches runs from about 4:45 pm, and dinner in Lagos happens after dark no matter how early you sit down.

Can you swim in Ponta da Piedade in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off the point averages 61.4°F in January in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024, a different source and a different period from the IPMA air normals. Read the fine print on it: that average is built from daily maxima, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. A January morning before the sun has worked on the surface is cooler than 61.4°F, not warmer.

For a swimmer in shorts, 61.4°F means a short, loud entry and a shorter exit. The air offers no rescue either: an average high of 61.0°F puts the atmosphere marginally below the water, so getting out feels worse than getting in. A wetsuit changes the whole question, and the kayak and paddleboard operators who work the arches supply one. We could not verify a January schedule or price for any of them, so we quote none.

Swell and wind settle more January plans than temperature does. IPMA’s own note on this station is blunt about it: Sagres sits at the windiest point of the coast, where the state of the sea rather than the air decides whether a boat leaves the landing. We found no January wave-height or wind-speed series for the headland, so we give no numbers for either. Ask at the marina on the morning you want to go, not the week before.

How busy is Ponta da Piedade in January? Crowds, boat tours and prices

January falls in the Algarve’s low season, which is a fact of the calendar rather than a measurement: schools are back, the charter traffic thins, and Lagos goes back to the people who live in it. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the town, so we crown no month cheapest and give no percentage. What can be said plainly is that the clifftop path in January has room to stop on it.

Booking pressure moves from rooms to boats. A grotto trip in January depends on the swell, operators cancel and rebook accordingly, and a non-refundable slot locked in weeks ahead buys nothing but a refund argument. Take the bed when you find the one you want, keep the water as a morning decision, and build the rest of the trip around the transport you can actually rely on in winter.

We could not verify a municipal tourist tax rate for Lagos, so we give no per-night amount. Ask the property to point at the line on the bill at check-in, and use our Portugal trip-cost guide for the categories that do carry published rates.

One upgrade genuinely changes January here, and it has four wheels. A car lets you abandon a gray headland at 10 am and find the day further along the coast, and it turns Sagres, Carvoeiro and Benagil into afternoon options rather than expeditions. Our rental guide handles tolls and insurance. Second question worth asking before you pay: does the apartment have real heating, because 47.3°F overnight in a stone building takes a while to undo.

Things to do in Ponta da Piedade in January

January gives you the clifftop with time to stand still on it. The walk from the lighthouse at the headland toward Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana is the same stretch people shuffle along in August, done at 61.0°F, which is walking temperature rather than endurance temperature. Low sun does the other favor: with the disc under the horizon by 5:43 pm, the light stays at a photographer’s angle for most of the afternoon instead of five minutes of it.

Named targets, in the order the day suits them: the headland and its viewpoints over the arches, the staircase down to the boat landing at the base, Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana just north, then Lagos old town and the marina for lunch and the evening. West at Sagres stands Cape St. Vincent and the IPMA station that supplies these normals. We could not verify a January price or timetable for any boat operator at the landing, so none appears here.

What the month moves is the air, not the rock. The stacks look in January exactly as they look in July, and the water below them reads 61.4°F instead of summer warmth, so the little beaches turn into places you walk across rather than lie on. That inverts the usual order of a Ponta da Piedade day: the cliff becomes the destination and the sand becomes the detour.

Nothing gates the clifftop. The path, the viewpoints and the beaches below cost the same in January as in August, which is nothing, and the month’s real spending lines are boat time and a car.

Ponta da Piedade in January: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Be at the headland for sunrise at 7:46 am, when the stacks take the sun sideways and the parking is empty. Walk north to Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo between 9 and noon, then take lunch in Lagos old town while the temperature climbs toward its 61.0°F average. Keep 2 to 4 pm for the water, boat or kayak, if the swell allows. Back on the cliff by 4:45 pm for the last hour, dinner after 5:43 pm in the dark.

Day two goes west: Cape St. Vincent and Sagres in the morning, where the wind that IPMA measures is very much a live experience, and back east for a slow afternoon in Lagos. If the rain shows up, and 7.4 days a January bring at least 0.04 inch, drop the exposed cape, spend the wet hours in the old town and hold the headland for the clearing, since the same system usually leaves the second half of a day usable.

Ponta da Piedade in January vs December and February

Measure December January February
Average high 62.6°F 61.0°F 61.3°F
Average low 49.8°F 47.3°F 47.8°F
Precipitation 2.96 in 2.10 in 1.91 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 8.0 7.4 6.3
Sea surface 63.2°F 61.4°F 61.1°F

Air temperature barely moves across the three months: 62.6°F, 61.0°F and 61.3°F at the high, with lows of 49.8°F, 47.3°F and 47.8°F, all from the same IPMA station and the same 1991-2020 period. Rain does the separating. December takes 2.96 inches over 8.0 rain days, January 2.10 over 7.4, February 1.91 over 6.3, the driest of the three. The sea runs the other direction in the Open-Meteo Marine record: 63.2°F, then 61.4°F, then 61.1°F.

Push the trip four weeks later and February trades 1.1 rain days and 0.19 inch of water for a sea 0.3°F cooler, with the air within half a degree either way. Pull it four weeks earlier and December hands over 1.6°F more by day, 2.5°F more at night and the warmest water of the three at 63.2°F, against 0.86 inch more rain and the holiday fortnight in town. Neither shift rescues swimming.

Is January a good time to visit Ponta da Piedade?

Yes for walkers, photographers and anyone who wants the arches without a queue at the viewpoint: 61.0°F afternoons, 7.4 rain days out of 31, and a low sun that flatters the cliff for hours. No for a beach holiday. A 61.4°F sea and a day that ends at 5:43 pm cannot be argued into a sunbathing week, and pretending otherwise would waste your flight.

If that answer sends you looking elsewhere in the winter, February is the better of the neighbors: 1.91 inches of rain over 6.3 days, air within 0.3°F of January’s high, and a sea only 0.3°F cooler. For actual swimming weather you need to leave the winter altogether, and the twelve-month verdict for Portugal names the months that deliver it.

Among the three, January alone keeps the water warmer than February’s 61.1°F while shedding 0.86 inch of December’s rain and the holiday crowd with it.

The last word

Book the room the day you find it, leave the boat to the morning and the swell, and pack the shell rather than the swimsuit. Then know the shape of a bad January day, because the record names it: 1.5 days in an average month bring 0.39 inch of rain or more, and on those the headland is spray and sideways wind. Two of them in a five-day trip is ordinary, which is precisely why the flexible plan, and the car, pay for themselves here.
