Alentejo in April: Weather, Rain Days, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

April hands the Alentejo its best trick: a plain that is still green. Wheat is up, the cork oaks are shading nothing yet, and the official thermometer at Évora averages a daytime 69.3°F (20.7°C), walking weather in any language. May adds 7.7°F to that afternoon and the green starts going gold. In April you can cross a hilltop town at noon and still want lunch at one.

The trade is rain, and it is mild. April at Évora logs 2.44 inches over roughly eight wet days, so a long weekend has a fair chance of catching one. Nights are the other surprise: an average low of 47.3°F (8.5°C) means a fleece in the car and a room where the heating works. Book for the daylight instead, 13 hours and 17 minutes of it by mid-month, and a wet afternoon turns into a museum and a very long lunch.

Come in April for 69.3°F afternoons on a green plain, then plan around eight wet days and nights averaging 47.3°F: layers, a rental car, and one indoor afternoon held in reserve.

Go for: midday walking at 69.3°F, a plain still green, Évora’s walled center on foot, and 13 hours of daylight to spread a short trip across.

Think twice before: building the trip around swimming. We could not verify a sea-surface series for the Alentejo coast, and an average low of 47.3°F makes coastal evenings cool.

Every figure here comes from one real thermometer: IPMA’s station 558 at Évora, 813 feet (247.6 m) up on the plain, on the 1991-2020 normals. That is the Alentejo itself rather than a coastal stand-in, and it does not describe the whole region. The Serra de São Mamede in the northeast runs colder and far wetter, and the coast around Vila Nova de Milfontes keeps its own weather. Pack for Évora and you are packing for the plain.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, puts April at Évora at an average high of 69.3°F and an average low of 47.3°F, with 2.44 inches of precipitation over the month. Those are 1991-2020 normals from station 558, a real instrument at a fixed altitude, not a grid cell interpolated from a model. The distinction matters when you are choosing a jacket, because a station reading belongs to one spot on the plain and the region’s high ground sits well above it.

Eight days in an average April record at least 0.04 inch of rain, and 1.9 of them come down hard enough to log 0.39 inch or more. Spread across a week, that is roughly two damp days out of seven, usually a passing band rather than a day-long grey. One caveat on the counting: those are IPMA’s thresholds, and American tables usually start their rain-day count at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of numbers are not interchangeable.

From 47.3°F at dawn to 69.3°F in mid-afternoon, the day swings 22.0 degrees, the single most useful number for a suitcase. A fleece and a light shell come off around ten and go back on at seven. An outdoor table is pleasant at eight and cool by ten, and thick-walled rural houses hold the night temperature long after the sun is up. Our packing guide has the full list.

On April 15 the sun rises at 6:53 a.m. and sets at 8:09 p.m. local time, giving 13 hours and 17 minutes of light. That buys a genuine two-part day: a long morning on the road, a full late afternoon, and gold on whitewashed walls from about seven. Dinner in Portugal starts late anyway, so schedule the last walk of the day for eight rather than six.

How warm is Alentejo in April? What to wear, morning and afternoon

The month’s two headline figures sit 22.0°F apart: 69.3°F for the average afternoon, 47.3°F for the average night, both measured at Évora. Neither is an extreme. An average is a monthly mean, so individual afternoons land above and below it, and a run of cloud can shave several degrees off any one of them.

In practice you carry two wardrobes through one day. Morning: long trousers, a fleece, something windproof for a ridge. Afternoon: short sleeves in the sun, plus sunglasses, because the light on open ground is flat and bright. Shoes that cope with a wet cobble matter more than anything rated waterproof, since 2.44 inches over a month arrives in bands rather than in tropical downpours.

We could not verify a count of April nights at or below 32°F at Évora, so we give no figure; an average low of 47.3°F makes a hard frost unlikely on the plain and less unlikely on the high ground. Swimming is the other blank. We could not verify a sea-surface temperature series for the Alentejo coast, so we quote no water figure, and published sea temperatures are averages of daily maxima anyway, a little warmer than a 24-hour mean. If the trip hinges on getting in the water, the Algarve in a warmer month is the better address.

How busy is Alentejo in April? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

We found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for the Alentejo, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can date is the calendar: April is a spring month with 13 hours of daylight, eight wet days on average, and it falls before the school-holiday weeks of high summer. For the money side, our Portugal trip cost guide and the twelve-month view in best time to visit Portugal carry what we have.

On booking, take the next two sentences as editorial rather than measured. Rural Alentejo runs on small farmhouse guesthouses rather than large hotels, and four or five rooms fill on an ordinary spring weekend faster than a big resort ever would, so pick the property first and the dates around it. We could not verify April event dates for the region, so we name none, and a village fair nobody warned you about can still take the last bed.

We could not verify whether the municipalities you are likely to sleep in charge a per-night tourist tax, or at what rate, so no percentage appears above or below. Ask when you reserve, settle it at check-in, and keep a small unknown in the nightly budget rather than a number we cannot stand behind.

One upgrade genuinely changes an April trip: a room that heats. With nights averaging 47.3°F and stone houses that hold the cold, a working fireplace or real central heating beats a view. The second line worth paying is the car. Alentejo distances are rural distances and timetables between small towns are thin, so read our car guide and getting-around guide before you fly.

Things to do in Alentejo in April

April is the month for covering ground on foot. At an average high of 69.3°F you can walk a full afternoon on open land. May averages 77.0°F, and deeper into summer that noon walk stops being an option at all. Wildflowers are out across the grazing country, the cork oaks still carry the painted number of their last stripping, and the wheat is green rather than straw, so bring one pair of shoes you are willing to get muddy.

Évora makes the obvious base: a walled center you cross on foot, with the IPMA station that produced these numbers sitting at 813 feet on the edge of town, and our Évora guide covers the monuments. North, Marvão and Castelo de Vide stand on the Serra de São Mamede, higher and wetter than any Évora reading. East, Monsaraz looks down over the Alqueva reservoir. West, the Rota Vicentina follows the cliffs south from Porto Covo. Check the operator when you book for April hours and ticket prices.

Stone ignores the calendar, air does not. A cathedral interior in Évora is much the same in April as in August; the difference is that in April you are not using it as shelter. The 7.7°F between April and May shows up in the middle of the day rather than at breakfast, so the hour to use here is noon: a hilltop lap at one, a cliff path at three. On the high ground in the northeast, subtract a few degrees from the plain’s figures and add rain.

Free in April: the plain itself. Farm tracks, the circuit of Évora’s walls, the ridge paths above Marvão, a Rota Vicentina section between two villages, none of it costs more than the driving day it sits inside. We could not verify any free-admission date at the region’s monuments for April, so we name none. Ask at the ticket desk when you arrive.

Alentejo in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one, on 13 hours and 17 minutes of light: coffee at eight, on the road by nine while the air is still in the fifties, and Évora’s walled center walked before the heat of the afternoon. Lunch long and indoors, one to three. Out again at four for Monsaraz and the Alqueva shore, with the light going gold around seven and sunset at 8:09 p.m. Dinner at nine, with the fleece over the back of the chair.

Day two runs north to the Serra de São Mamede, Marvão on its ridge and Castelo de Vide below it, in cooler and wetter air than the Évora normals promise. If the sky turns, and on these averages it does about two days in eight, swap the ridge for Évora’s museums and a cork workshop, then drive after lunch when the band has passed. Wet cobbles in a hilltop town are the real hazard of an April day, so leave the smooth soles at home.

Alentejo in April vs March and May

Measure at Évora March April May
Average high 65.7°F 69.3°F 77.0°F
Average low 44.4°F 47.3°F 51.6°F
Precipitation 2.39 in 2.44 in 1.83 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 7.5 8.0 6.0

Across the three months the afternoon climbs and the rain retreats. March averages 65.7°F by day and 44.4°F at night, April 69.3 and 47.3, May 77.0 and 51.6. Rain barely moves between March and April, 2.39 against 2.44 inches, then falls to 1.83 in May, with wet-day counts of 7.5, 8.0 and 6.0.

Push the trip four weeks forward and you buy 7.7°F in the afternoon and two fewer wet days, at the cost of a plain already turning gold. Pull it back to March and you give up 3.6°F in the daytime and some daylight for almost identical rain. April sits between them: warm enough for a noon walk, early enough that the wheat is still green.

Is April a good time to visit Alentejo?

Yes, if the point of the trip is being outside. Walkers, cyclists and drivers with a loose plan get the region at 69.3°F, the figure that decides whether open ground is a pleasure or a chore. No, if the trip depends on water: an average low of 47.3°F, eight wet days and no sea temperature we can stand behind add up to a coast you look at rather than swim in.

When the answer is no, May is the month to move to: 77.0°F afternoons, 1.83 inches of rain and six wet days instead of eight. Autumn sits outside what these Évora normals cover, so take that half of the comparison from the twelve-month view in best time to visit Portugal rather than from anything written here.

One combination belongs to April alone: 13 hours and 17 minutes of daylight, an afternoon of 69.3°F, and grass still green on a plain that spends most of the year the color of straw.

The last word

Between March and April the rain barely shifts, 0.05 inch on the 1991-2020 normals, while the afternoon gains 3.6°F. So choose between those two months on warmth and light rather than on your odds of getting wet, then book the room with the fireplace anyway. The last practical point: fly into Lisbon, collect the car at the airport, and give yourself at least two nights near Évora, because one night on the plain is mostly driving.
