ALENTEJO · MAY · 38.6° N
May hands the Alentejo its best trick: heat you can walk in. The official May normal for Évora puts the average high at 77.0°F (25.0°C), a full 9.4°F below June, and the plain is still green at that temperature. Wheat standing, cork oaks throwing real shade, storks nesting on the chimneys of the walled town.
What the month asks in return is a little patience with the sky. An average May records 1.83 inches (46 mm) of rain over 6.0 days, and dawn still reads 51.6°F before the afternoon climbs.

ALENTEJO IN MAY · ÉVORA NORMALS
May is the Alentejo’s walking month: 77.0°F afternoons, six rain days to work around, and daylight holding until 8:37 p.m. before June’s 86.4°F arrives.
AVERAGE HIGH 77.0°F · 6.0 RAIN DAYS · 14H20 OF DAYLIGHT ON MAY 15
Go for: midday walking at 77.0°F, the wheat green before the summer burn, sunset at 8:37 p.m., and stone circles you can reach without a dawn start.
Think twice before: building the trip around swimming: we found no verified water temperature for this coast, and 1.4 days in an average May bring 0.39 inch of rain or more.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, station 558 at Évora: a real thermometer standing at 247.6 m inside the Alentejo, not a coastal stand-in and not a model grid cell. Its 1991-2020 May normals give an average high of 77.0°F (25.0°C), an average low of 51.6°F (10.9°C) and 1.83 inches (46 mm) of rain. One caveat travels with them. Évora is the plain. Higher ground runs colder and considerably wetter, and the coast keeps weather of its own, so pack for the bed you actually booked.
Measurable rain falls on 6.0 days in an average May, roughly one day in five, and 25 days come out dry. Only 1.4 of those wet days reach 0.39 inch (10 mm), the volume that ends an afternoon on an exposed hilltop. Watch the threshold before you compare with home: IPMA counts from 1 mm (0.04 inch), while US tables usually count from 0.10 inch, so the two rain-day figures are not interchangeable.
Between that 51.6°F dawn and that 77.0°F afternoon sits 25.4°F of daily swing, which is the single most useful number for a suitcase. Short sleeves and sun cover carry the middle of the day, and a fleece or light jacket earns its place the moment the sun drops behind the town wall. Our packing guide has the rest of the list.
Light is the month’s quiet luxury. On May 15 the sun rises at 6:17 a.m. and sets at 8:37 p.m. local time (Western European Summer Time, UTC+1), giving 14 hours 20 minutes of daylight. You can finish a country drive at 8:00 p.m. and still park in daylight, and dinner outdoors starts before dark rather than after it.
How warm is Alentejo in May, and do nights get cold?
The month runs between 77.0°F by day and 51.6°F before dawn, 25.4°F apart. Both are averages across thirty-one Mays, not ceilings: a clear May afternoon on the plain can sit well above 77.0°F, and a cloudy one well below. Treat the pair as the shape of a normal day rather than a forecast for yours.
In practice that means two wardrobes in one day. Mornings before nine want a layer, and so do terraces after 8:37 p.m., when the sun has gone and the stone starts giving back its heat. From late morning to about six, you are in the clothes you would wear for a warm American spring, with a hat for anywhere the cork oaks do not reach.
We have no count of nights at or below freezing for May at Évora, so we make no claim either way, and a 51.6°F average low means individual nights land colder. As for the water, we found no verified sea-surface series for the Alentejo coast, so no swimming temperature appears here. If another table gives you one, check what it measures: most publish an average of daily maxima, which reads warmer than a 24-hour mean.
How busy is Alentejo in May? Crowds, prices and when to book
We found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for the Alentejo, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. What is on record is the weather curve the trade follows: 69.3°F in April, 77.0°F in May, 86.4°F in June, with rain falling from 2.44 inches to 1.83 and then to 0.42. May sits on the climb, before the pool-and-beach arithmetic takes over.
Book earlier than the size of the region suggests. Alentejo lodging runs to converted farm buildings and small guesthouses with a handful of rooms each, so a single wedding party can take a village. Our working rule, an estimate rather than a measurement: six to eight weeks (est.) ahead for a May weekend around Évora or Monsaraz, and rather less midweek. Flights set the outer frame, and our flights guide covers the Lisbon approach.
We could not verify a municipal tourist tax for Évora or any other Alentejo town, so we give no per-night rate. Ask at booking whether a nightly tax is included in the quoted price or collected at the desk, and budget the rest with our Portugal trip-cost guide.
Spend your extra money on the car, not the room. The sights that make May worth the flight are scattered across farmland, the stone circle sits at the end of a dirt track, and a cellar visit at four in the afternoon is not something you reach by timetable. Our getting-around guide covers the bus and rail options for the towns that have them.
Things to do in Alentejo in May: Évora, Monsaraz and the Alqueva shore

May is the month you can be outside at one in the afternoon. At 77.0°F you walk a full day on the plain without rationing your hours, whereas June’s 86.4°F pushes the same walk to before ten and after six. April is kinder still on the thermometer at 69.3°F, but it carries 2.44 inches of rain over 8.0 days, and the difference shows up as canceled afternoons.
Start with Évora inside its walls: the Roman temple, the bone chapel, and the aqueduct arches with houses built into them along Rua do Cano. West of town, the Cromeleque dos Almendres sets its granite stones in open field at the end of a dirt track. East, Monsaraz keeps its white lanes on a ridge above the Alqueva water, with cork montado all the way there.
The month changes the air, not the stones, and the air is what you feel at Almendres and on the Monsaraz walls, where nothing casts shade. That 9.4°F gap between May and June is the whole difference between reading a stone circle at midday and retreating to the car. Sunset at 8:37 p.m. also buys a second outdoor shift after the hot hours, which the shorter days of early spring do not.
We found no May free-admission dates for Alentejo sites, so we list none. The unticketed half of the region stands anyway: Évora’s lanes and aqueduct, the Praça do Giraldo at coffee hour, and the roads through the cork oaks, where the trees carry the year of their last stripping painted on the trunk.
Alentejo in May: a two-day itinerary from Évora
Day one belongs to Évora. Be inside the walls by 8:00, when the lanes still hold shade and the Roman temple stands empty. Walk the aqueduct before 11:00, then take the hot stretch indoors over a long lunch, because 77.0°F is a monthly average and a bright May afternoon runs above it. Drive out to the Cromeleque dos Almendres around 5:00 p.m., once the track has cooled and the granite turns gold. With sunset at 8:37 p.m., you are back in town in daylight.
Day two runs east to Monsaraz and the Alqueva shore, again with an early start, since the ridge is walled, white and unshaded and the view over the water is clearest before haze builds. Keep the afternoon loose for a cellar or a slow loop through the montado. If rain arrives, and it arrives on 6.0 days in an average May, trade the ridge for Évora’s churches and museums and move the outdoor half to the next morning: only 1.4 days a month bring 0.39 inch or more.
Alentejo in May vs April and June
| Measure | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 69.3°F (20.7°C) | 77.0°F (25.0°C) | 86.4°F (30.2°C) |
| Average low | 47.3°F (8.5°C) | 51.6°F (10.9°C) | 56.8°F (13.8°C) |
| Precipitation | 2.44 in (62 mm) | 1.83 in (46 mm) | 0.42 in (11 mm) |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 8.0 | 6.0 | 1.7 |
| Sea temperature | Not verified | Not verified | Not verified |
| What each month gives | The trade |
|---|---|
| April | Coolest walking at 69.3°F, and the wettest of the three at 2.44 in over 8.0 days |
| May | 77.0°F with the plain green, 25 dry days out of 31 |
| June | Nearly rainless at 0.42 in, but 86.4°F rules the middle of the day |
Across the three months the thermometer climbs 17.1°F, from 69.3°F in April to 86.4°F in June, while rainfall falls from 2.44 inches to 0.42 and wet days drop from 8.0 to 1.7. May takes the middle of both curves.
Move four weeks back to April and you gain cool walking and greener ground, and you give up two extra rain days and 0.61 inch of rain. Move four weeks forward to June and you gain an almost dry month, then pay for it with 9.4°F more heat at noon and a plain already turning gold. May is the compromise that needs no plan B on most days.
Is May a good time to visit Alentejo?
Yes for anyone whose trip happens outdoors on foot: 77.0°F afternoons, 25 dry days in 31, and light until 8:37 p.m. that stretches a day into two halves. No if the holiday is built around swimming, because we have no verified water temperature for this coast and the dawn air still averages 51.6°F, which is not a beach morning by American standards.
If the answer is no, shift to June, and the margin is wide: 86.4°F days, 0.42 inch of rain across the whole month, 1.7 days with measurable rain. That is a pool-and-coast month with the green gone from the fields. Shift the other way to April only if you want cooler walking and will accept 2.44 inches and 8.0 wet days.
No other month on the Évora record combines a 77.0°F afternoon with a plain that has not yet burned, which is exactly what June’s 86.4°F and 0.42 inch of rain put an end to.
The last word
Book the car before the room, then set the clock to the light rather than the heat: sun up at 6:17 a.m., down at 8:37 p.m., with the walking at both ends and lunch in the middle. And think about the nights before you plan a week of terrace dinners. May’s average low of 51.6°F sits only 4.3°F above April’s and a full 5.2°F below June’s, which is the difference between reaching for a jacket at nine and forgetting you own one.
