Playa del Carmen puts a pedestrian street of shops, clubs and restaurants right beside the Caribbean. That street is Quinta Avenida, it runs parallel to the beach, and it is the spine of the whole downtown. Most trips here start with a slow walk along it and grow outward from there.
The town began in 1937 as a small fishing settlement. The 2020 Mexican census counted 304,942 residents, which makes it Quintana Roo’s second-largest city after Cancun. It sits at an elevation of about 10 meters, and it rebuilt itself after storms such as Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Today it doubles as the departure point for the Cozumel ferry and the closest big town to Xcaret.

Playa del Carmen works as a base with a day-trip belt around it: the ferry to Cozumel, Xcaret down the coast, and cenotes such as Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote near Tulum, plus smaller sites toward Puerto Morelos. Each cenote is run independently and posts its own price, so budget them one at a time.
What is there to do on Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen?
Quinta Avenida is a pedestrian thoroughfare lined with shops, clubs and restaurants, and it runs parallel to the beach. That makes it the natural first stop: browse the shops in the afternoon, pick a restaurant when the heat drops, and leave the clubs for later. A town that was a fishing settlement in 1937 now packs its whole social life onto this one strip.
The town sits about 10 meters above sea level, so getting around on foot is easy going. Quinta costs nothing to walk. The paid days out are separate plans that start elsewhere: the Cozumel ferry leaves from a terminal on Avenida Benito Juarez, and Xcaret lies down the coast to the south.

Ultramar’s Cozumel ferry leaves from the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA on Avenida Benito Juarez, a street of its own and not the beachfront. Passengers must reach the terminal 30 minutes before departure. Plan your morning backward from that deadline rather than from the sailing time printed on the ticket.
Ultramar tickets stay valid for six months from purchase. That helps if your dates are still moving, because buying early does not lock you into the day you first picked.
Xcaret Xpress also sails the Playa del Carmen–Cozumel crossing, under Grupo Xcaret’s Xcaret Xailing ferry brand. We quote no fare and no crossing time for either boat, since neither operator’s page gave us a dated, currently published figure we could confirm. Open both operators’ pages on the day you buy and compare them there.
What does a day at Xcaret near Playa del Carmen include?
Parque Xcaret sits on the coast south of Playa del Carmen and is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. It advertises more than 50 natural and cultural attractions, including underground rivers, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion and a coral reef aquarium. After dark comes the park’s own evening show, Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, with more than 300 performers. Tickets are priced dynamically, so read the price on xcaret.com the day you plan to go.
Which airport is closest to Playa del Carmen?
Cancun International Airport (CUN), operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), lies about 68 kilometers from Playa del Carmen. It is the airport most trips are built around, and the one to price first.
Tulum International Airport has been open since December 2023 and sits to the south. It is the closer option for the southern Riviera Maya. We have no published distance from it to Playa del Carmen itself, so treat it as a candidate to check rather than a shortcut.
The ground leg is the piece we cannot fill in. We found no dated fare, frequency or drop-off point for an airport transfer, so we quote none. Before you fly, ask your hotel what it can arrange, and get the pickup and drop-off address in writing.
Choose Tulum’s airport if your base or your cenote plans lean south, and Cancun if Playa del Carmen and its ferry and Xcaret days are the center of the trip. Price flights into both, then match the cheaper one against how late you land.
Is Playa del Carmen safe to visit?
As of the U.S. State Department’s Mexico travel advisory dated May 29, 2026, the State of Quintana Roo is at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” because of terrorism and crime. The advisory cites a risk of violence from terrorist groups, cartels, gangs and criminal organizations. It notes that shootings between rival gangs have injured and killed innocent bystanders, and that U.S. citizens have been victims of both non-violent and violent crime in tourist and non-tourist areas.
The advisory’s practical advice is to pay attention to your surroundings after dark and to stay on well-lit pedestrian streets and in tourist zones. It also names Playa del Carmen, alongside Cancun, Tulum and Cozumel, as a place with a Tourist Assistance Module. There you can get emergency numbers, legal advice and tourist information, and help filing police reports for lost passports or complaints against service providers. Ask your hotel on day one where Playa’s module is.
When is the best time to visit Playa del Carmen?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. Most activity concentrates between mid-August and mid-October. Those are the weeks to book with a refundable rate, and the ferry ticket’s six-month validity gives you a little extra room.
Hurricane Wilma struck this coast in October 2005 and stayed in the vicinity for about two days. It was one of the storms that shaped the modern town’s rebuilding. It is also a reminder that October still belongs to the season, which runs through November 30.

Whatever month you pick, Quintana Roo charges foreign tourists a mandatory environmental sanitation fee, the Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental, known as Visitax. It falls under Article 51 Octies of the state’s Law of Rights, and you pay it online at visitax.gob.mx or through authorized companies. We could not confirm the current peso amount, so read it on the portal before you pay.
