Playa del Carmen started in 1937 as a small fishing settlement. The 2020 Mexican census counted 304,942 residents, which makes it the second-largest city in Quintana Roo after Cancun, spread over about 49.8 square kilometers. Every air figure here comes from Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA), which publishes 1991-2020 climate normals. The thermometer is at the Leona Vicario station (SMN 23014), near Puerto Morelos and about 25 miles north of town. Playa itself is not separately measured, so read these as the nearest official record for this stretch of coast, not a reading from the beach.

Yes, you can swim, and nobody needs a wetsuit. At 87.4°F the water sits close to the 91.9°F average high of the air, so getting in and out brings no shock. Long snorkeling sessions and lingering swims are comfortable.
Our sources carry no wind, swell or seaweed data for September, so we say nothing about surf or sargassum. They do carry the storm calendar: hurricane season peaks on September 10, and most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October. We hold no verified booking-lead figure either, so no weeks-ahead number appears. Two operator facts do help. Ultramar’s Cozumel tickets stay valid for six months from purchase, and Xcaret prices its tickets dynamically, so check its own site on the day you buy rather than trusting a number quoted elsewhere. Quintana Roo charges foreign tourists a mandatory environmental sanitation fee, the Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental, known as Visitax (Article 51 Octies of the state’s Law of Rights). It is paid online at visitax.gob.mx or through authorized companies. We could not confirm the current peso amount on the portal, so we give no figure.
The one line where paying more changes September is the cancellation terms. A room and a flight you can change or cancel turn a storm forecast into a rebooking rather than a lost payment.
Things to do in Playa del Carmen in September
The month suits days built around the water. The sea is bath-warm at 87.4°F, and daylight lasts 12 hours 17 minutes on September 15, enough for a morning outing and an evening one with the hot midday in between. The two big outings below run on operator hours that make that split easy.
Xcaret, on the coast south of Playa del Carmen, is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and advertises more than 50 natural and cultural attractions, including underground rivers, an aviary and a coral reef aquarium. Its evening show, Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, features more than 300 performers. For Cozumel, Ultramar’s ferry leaves from the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA on Avenida Benito Juarez, and passengers must arrive 30 minutes before departure. Xcaret Xpress sails the same crossing, but we could not read a current fare or crossing time.
September changes the air around these places more than the places themselves. Highs of 91.9°F and rain on 10.6 days mean outdoor stretches want early starts and a rain layer. Cenotes follow the same logic. The Dos Ojos system and Gran Cenote both lie closer to Tulum, smaller sites sit toward Puerto Morelos, and each is run independently with its own posted price. Walking Quinta Avenida costs nothing: it is a pedestrian thoroughfare parallel to the beach, lined with shops, clubs and restaurants. We found no dated September events, so none appear. After dark, the U.S. State Department’s May 29, 2026 advisory rates Quintana Roo Level 2, ‘Exercise increased caution,’ and advises staying on well-lit pedestrian streets and in tourist zones. Playa del Carmen itinerary for September
Day one, Xcaret. Be at the gate for the 8:30 a.m. opening and take the outdoor attractions early, before the air reaches its 91.9°F average high. Spend the middle of the day on the water attractions, such as the underground rivers, then stay for the evening show. The park closes at 10:30 p.m., long after the 6:51 p.m. sunset.
Day two, Cozumel. Reach the Ultramar terminal on Avenida Benito Juarez 30 minutes before the crossing and spend the day on the island. If the sky turns, swap in Quinta Avenida on foot, a pedestrian street of shops and restaurants. Tickets stay valid for six months from purchase. If a storm is forecast, check the National Hurricane Center before you commit to the crossing.

October is still inside hurricane season, which ends November 30, and Hurricane Wilma struck this coast in October 2005 and stayed about two days. August offers 8.5 rain days and 5.37 inches, at the cost of 93.6°F highs and a month whose second half already sits in the mid-August to mid-October stretch when most storm activity falls.
Is September a good time to visit Playa del Carmen?
Yes, if you want warm water and can move your plans. The sea averages 87.4°F, and with rain on 10.6 days, about two days in three stay free of measurable rain. No, if your week is fixed and non-refundable: September holds the storm peak on the 10th, and the season runs to November 30.
If the answer is no, the fix depends on the reason. For less rain, August logs 8.5 days and 5.37 inches, though it runs hotter at 93.6°F. For cooler air, October sits at 90.0°F, though wetter at 7.01 inches. For no hurricane-season exposure at all, the trip has to land after November 30.
