January falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October (NOAA National Hurricane Center). Hurricane Wilma struck this coast in October 2005 and stayed in the vicinity for about two days.

Playa del Carmen weather in January

Every figure here comes from Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA): the official 1991-2020 normals for station 23014 at Leona Vicario, near Puerto Morelos, about 25 miles north. That is the nearest official thermometer on this stretch of coast, and Playa del Carmen itself is not separately measured. January averages a high of 86.5°F, a low of 62.6°F and 2.48 inches of precipitation.

SMN records measurable rain on 6.2 days in an average January, roughly one day in five. The station sheet does not publish the agency’s threshold, so we cannot tell a drizzle from a downpour in that count. Plan on a shower or two between beach hours and keep one flexible afternoon.

Between the 86.5°F average high and the 62.6°F average low sits a gap of 23.9°F. Pack shorts, sunscreen and a hat for the day, a light layer for evenings by the water, and a packable rain shell.

On January 15 the day lasts about 11 hours 03 minutes. The sun rises at 7:25 a.m. and sets at 6:29 p.m. Quintana Roo time (sunrise-sunset.org figures, converted from UTC). Beach hours sit between those two, and dinner on Quinta Avenida happens after dark.

Can you swim in Playa del Carmen in January? Sea temperature

The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea surface off Playa del Carmen at 81.6°F in January. That is the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. It comes from a different source than the air normals above, and we found no second sea series to set beside it.

At 81.6°F the water sits 4.9°F below the average afternoon high, mild enough to swim through the afternoon. Because the figure is an afternoon peak, an early swim or one after sunset will feel cooler, and the walk out of the water at night meets air that can fall to 62.6°F.

How busy is Playa del Carmen in January? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate table for Playa del Carmen, so we place January nowhere in the price cycle. A source that ranks it among the year’s months on price needs that data behind it. What our sources do confirm is the weather people travel for: 86.5°F highs and an 81.6°F sea.

We have no verified booking lead time for January, so we put no number of weeks on it. Two dated facts help with flights. Cancun International (CUN), run by ASUR, lies about 68 kilometers from town, and Tulum International, open since December 2023, sits to the south. Price both against your dates. Quintana Roo charges foreign tourists a mandatory environmental sanitation fee, the Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental, known as Visitax, under Article 51 Octies of the state’s Law of Rights. Xcaret’s hours are the one place a bigger budget stretches a January day: the park is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., about four hours after the 6:29 p.m. sunset. It prices tickets dynamically and we could not read a current price, so look at the operator’s own page for your dates before deciding.

Things to do in Playa del Carmen in January

A mild sea and 86.5°F afternoons suit water-based days: the Cozumel crossing, the underground rivers at Xcaret, a cenote swim. Ultramar’s ferry leaves from the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA on Avenida Benito Juarez, and passengers must be there 30 minutes before departure. Tickets stay valid for six months from purchase. Xcaret Xpress also sails the crossing, though we could not read a current fare or crossing time for either operator.

Parque Xcaret, on the coast south of town, advertises more than 50 natural and cultural attractions: underground rivers, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion and a coral reef aquarium. After dark comes Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, with more than 300 performers. For cenotes, the Dos Ojos system and Gran Cenote lie closer to Tulum, and several smaller sites sit toward Puerto Morelos, each independently run with its own posted price.

We found no dated water temperature for the cenotes, so we give no figure. The air is what changes with the month: afternoons reach 86.5°F, and a wet swimsuit in shade or at dusk feels cooler than that number suggests. Take a towel and a dry shirt for the ride back.

Walking Quinta Avenida costs nothing. It is the town’s pedestrian spine, lined with shops, clubs and restaurants, and it runs parallel to the beach. We found no verified list of January events, so we name none.

Playa del Carmen itinerary for January

Day one is Xcaret. Arrive when the park opens at 8:30 a.m., well before the 86.5°F afternoon high, and do the underground rivers first. Move on to the aviary, the butterfly pavilion and the coral reef aquarium as the day warms. Stay for Xcaret Mexico Espectacular: sunset is at 6:29 p.m. and the park stays open until 10:30 p.m. We could not read the show’s start time, so confirm it with the operator.

Day two is Cozumel by ferry, back on Quinta Avenida for the evening. If a shower rolls in (6.2 days in an average January), keep the plan and move the beach hours to afterward. If the rain settles in, trade days: Quinta Avenida’s shops and restaurants make an easy substitute, and the Cozumel crossing can wait, since Ultramar tickets stay valid after purchase.

Playa del Carmen in January vs December and February

Air temperatures barely move across the three months: highs run 87.1°F in December, 86.5°F in January and 87.8°F in February, a spread of 1.3°F. Lows slip from 63.7°F to 62.6°F to 61.9°F. Rain separates them. January’s 2.48 inches over 6.2 days is the wettest of the three, against 2.02 inches over 5.0 days in December and 1.79 inches over 3.3 days in February. The air figures all come from station 23014, and the sea follows the lows down: 82.4°F, 81.6°F, 81.0°F, from the Marine API.

Moving to February brings 2.9 fewer rain days, 0.69 inch less rain and afternoons 1.3°F warmer, at the cost of nights 0.7°F cooler and a sea 0.6°F cooler. Moving to December brings 1.2 fewer rain days, 0.46 inch less rain, highs 0.6°F warmer and a sea 0.8°F warmer. We hold no rate series, so we cannot say what either shift does to hotel prices.

Is January a good time to visit Playa del Carmen?

Yes, for anyone who wants swimming water and warm afternoons: 86.5°F highs, a sea at 81.6°F and a month outside hurricane season. It suits a rain-averse traveler less, since 6.2 rain days is the highest count of the three months. One caution applies in every month. The U.S. State Department’s advisory of May 29, 2026 puts Quintana Roo at Level 2, ‘Exercise increased caution,’ and advises staying on well-lit pedestrian streets and in tourist zones after dark. It lists Playa del Carmen among the cities with Tourist Assistance Modules.

If the answer is no, pick February: 3.3 rain days, 1.79 inches of rain and afternoons of 87.8°F. Someone who mainly wants the warmest water should look at December, when the sea reads 82.4°F.

January puts the sea at 81.6°F, between December’s 82.4°F and February’s 81.0°F, under 86.5°F afternoons and outside the hurricane calendar.

Playa del Carmen began in 1937 as a small fishing settlement and counted 304,942 residents in the 2020 census, second in Quintana Roo after Cancun. January is a good month to see how it turned out. Swim in the 81.6°F sea, take a February date if you would rather have fewer rain days, and pay Visitax at visitax.gob.mx before you fly.
