Playa del Carmen in October means a Caribbean sea near 86.2°F, afternoons around 90.0°F and measurable rain on roughly a third of the days. The town began in 1937 as a small fishing settlement. The 2020 census counted 304,942 residents, which makes it the second-largest city in Quintana Roo after Cancun.

October also falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30, peaking September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October). Hurricane Wilma struck this coast in October 2005 and stayed in the vicinity for about two days. None of that cancels a trip. It decides how you book: refundable where possible, with the ferry and park plans held loosely.

Every air-temperature and rain figure here comes from Mexico’s national weather service (SMN). Its 1991-2020 normals for October were measured at the Leona Vicario station (number 23014) near Puerto Morelos, about 25 miles north of Playa del Carmen. It is the nearest official station on this stretch of coast, and Playa itself is not separately measured, so read the numbers as the regional pattern. Sea temperature comes from a different source, the Open-Meteo Marine API.

The SMN normals for October put the average high at 90.0°F and the average low at 69.6°F, with 7.01 inches of precipitation over the month. These are readings from a real weather station at Leona Vicario, not a modeled grid cell, though the thermometer stands about 25 miles up the coast. On the same station, September averages a 91.9°F high and November 87.4°F.

SMN counts 10.3 days of measurable rain in an average October, roughly a third of the month. The station sheet does not publish the threshold for a rain day, so the count may not match what a U.S. weather app would tally. For a trip, hold the Cozumel crossing and the big outdoor day for a morning when the sky looks settled, and keep an indoor or evening option ready for the rest.

The gap between the 90.0°F high and the 69.6°F low is 20.4 degrees. Pack for the low as much as the high: a light rain layer that doubles as an evening layer, sun protection for the hours between, and sandals that cope with wet pavement.

That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. It comes from a different source and period than the air normals, and other sea-temperature tables may read a little lower.

At 86.2°F the water needs no easing in. A morning swim, while the air is still near the 69.6°F average low, feels warmer than the air around it. By afternoon, with highs around 90.0°F, the sea is the cooler place to be.

Our sources carry no October wind or swell reading for this coast, so we cannot say how choppy the water runs. The hurricane season stays open through November 30, so check the day’s marine forecast before a boat trip or the Cozumel crossing.

How busy is Playa del Carmen in October? Crowds and prices

Things to do in Playa del Carmen in October

Warm water and daylight until 6:25 p.m. make the beach a morning and late-afternoon plan. With rain on about a third of the days, the best October plans are the ones with a long window, so a shower can pass without wrecking the day.

Parque Xcaret, on the coast south of Playa del Carmen, is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. It advertises more than 50 natural and cultural attractions, among them underground rivers, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion and a coral reef aquarium. The evening show, Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, features more than 300 performers. Ticket prices are dynamic and we could not read a current one.

Ultramar’s Cozumel ferry leaves from the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA on Avenida Benito Juarez. Passengers must reach the terminal 30 minutes before departure, and tickets stay valid for six months from purchase. Xcaret Xpress also sails the crossing, but we could not read a current fare or crossing time. Cenotes near Playa include Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote, both closer to Tulum, and smaller sites toward Puerto Morelos. Each is independently run with its own posted price, and we have no October water reading for any of them.

Quinta Avenida is a pedestrian thoroughfare of shops, clubs and restaurants running parallel to the beach, and walking it costs nothing. Day one follows the light and the heat. Sunrise on October 15 is 6:42 a.m. and the air is still cool, so walk the beach and swim in the 86.2°F water first. Spend the hottest hours, with highs averaging 90.0°F, in shade or indoors over a long lunch near Quinta Avenida. Head back to the water in the late afternoon, before sunset at 6:25 p.m., and walk the pedestrian street once it is dark.

Day two goes to Xcaret, which opens at 8:30 a.m. and stays open until 10:30 p.m., long enough to wait out the rain and still catch the evening show. If the morning is clear and settled, swap in the Cozumel ferry instead and be at the NAVEGA terminal 30 minutes before departure.

Playa del Carmen in October vs September and November

October’s average high of 90.0°F sits 1.9 degrees below September’s and 2.6 degrees above November’s. Rain barely separates September and October, at 6.73 and 7.01 inches. November cuts it to 3.54 inches over 5.9 rain days, roughly half of October’s 7.01 inches. The sea steps down from 87.4°F to 86.2°F to 84.3°F.

Moving a trip from mid-October to mid-November gains much drier air and gives up 1.9 degrees of sea warmth and 3.0 degrees on the nights (69.6°F to 66.6°F). It also leaves behind the mid-August-to-mid-October stretch when most storm activity falls, though the season runs to November 30. Moving back to September adds 1.2 degrees to the sea and puts you at the September 10 peak.

Is October a good time to visit Playa del Carmen?

Yes, for anyone who wants swimming water and hot days and can live with measurable rain on roughly a third of them. The sea sits at 86.2°F, highs average 90.0°F, and Xcaret stays open until 10:30 p.m. It suits a trip booked refundable, with day plans held loosely. It suits a fixed, non-refundable itinerary less, because October falls inside hurricane season.

Travelers who need a drier week should look at November: 3.54 inches of precipitation over 5.9 rain days, with highs at 87.4°F.
