Cancun International Airport (CUN), operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), lies about 68 kilometers from Playa del Carmen. Tulum International Airport, open since December 2023, sits to the south as the closer option for the southern Riviera Maya.

Playa del Carmen weather in February

Every air figure here comes from Mexico’s national weather service, the Servicio Meteorologico Nacional (CONAGUA), using its 1991-2020 normals from station 23014 at Leona Vicario, near Puerto Morelos about 25 miles north. Those are the nearest official normals on this stretch of coast, and Playa del Carmen itself is not separately measured. The station puts a February afternoon at 87.8°F, a night at 61.9°F and the month’s rain at 1.79 inches.

SMN counts 3.3 days of measurable rain in an average February, and it does not publish the threshold it uses for a rain day. A little over three such days across the month leaves most days dry. When a shower does arrive, move the beach to whichever hours are dry.

That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean would. It also comes from a different source and a different decade than the air normals above.

Yes, you can swim. At 81.0°F the water sits well below the 87.8°F afternoon air, so the first step in feels cool and the rest comfortable. In the early morning, when the air averages 61.9°F, the sea is the warmer of the two.

Our sources carry no wind, wave or swell data for February, so we say nothing about how rough the water gets. Check the flag and ask your hotel before you swim, and before any boat crossing.

How busy is Playa del Carmen in February? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no hotel-rate series for Playa del Carmen, so we place February at neither end of the price year and quote no room rate. Compare rates for your own dates against January and March, the two neighboring months laid out below.

Things to do in Playa del Carmen in February

February suits boat and island plans because it falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10. Hurricane Wilma struck this coast in October 2005 and stayed in the vicinity for about two days, so those season dates matter for anything on the water.

Ultramar’s Cozumel ferry leaves from the Terminal Maritima NAVEGA on Avenida Benito Juarez, and passengers must be there 30 minutes before departure. Xcaret Xpress, run by Grupo Xcaret, also sails the crossing, but we could not read a current fare or crossing time for either. Parque Xcaret, on the coast south of town, opens daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and advertises more than 50 attractions, among them underground rivers, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion and a coral reef aquarium.

The cenotes near Playa del Carmen include the Dos Ojos system and Gran Cenote, both closer to Tulum, plus several smaller sites toward Puerto Morelos. Each is independently run with its own posted price. We have no verified water temperature for them, so we give none. What February sets is the air, with 61.9°F lows and 87.8°F highs.

Quinta Avenida, the downtown spine, is a pedestrian street lined with shops, clubs and restaurants that runs parallel to the beach. Walking it needs no ticket. Our sources name no other free attraction for February, so we list none.

Playa del Carmen itinerary for February

Day one: Be on the sand near sunrise at 7:16 a.m., when the air sits closest to the 61.9°F average low, and swim in the 81.0°F sea before the afternoon high of 87.8°F. Spend the middle of the day on Quinta Avenida for shops and lunch, then return to the water for the last light before the 6:47 p.m. sunset.

Day two: Go to Xcaret when it opens at 8:30 a.m., use the cooler morning hours and stay for the evening show, since the park stays open to 10:30 p.m. Swap in the Cozumel crossing if you prefer an island. If a shower comes, move the beach to the dry hours and keep the shops and restaurants of Quinta Avenida for the wet ones. We have not verified Xcaret’s rain policy, so check its page before committing a wet day.

Playa del Carmen in February vs January and March

Highs climb from 86.5°F in January to 87.8°F in February and 90.1°F in March, so February sits 1.3 degrees above January and 2.3 degrees below March. Lows run 62.6°F, then 61.9°F, then 64.2°F. Rain days fall from 6.2 to 3.3 to 2.9, and precipitation from 2.48 to 1.79 to 1.64 inches. The sea, from the marine API, reads 81.6°F, 81.0°F and 81.4°F.

Moving four weeks later to March gains hotter afternoons at 90.1°F, warmer nights at 64.2°F and a rain-day count of 2.9. You lose the coolest mornings of the three months. Is February a good time to visit Playa del Carmen?

Yes, if you want beach afternoons at 87.8°F, a sea at 81.0°F and only 3.3 rain days. It suits anyone who likes a cool start to the day. It suits less well anyone who wants hot evenings, because the average low is 61.9°F, or who wants certainty on price, because we found no rate data.

If the answer is no, pick March. It brings 90.1°F highs, 64.2°F lows and 2.9 rain days, and the sea is 81.4°F. January is the weaker swap, with 6.2 rain days.

Among January, February and March, February has the coolest nights, at 61.9°F, with a sea still at 81.0°F.
