In July, mangoes sit in ripe stacks at the stalls of Naha’s Makishi market, the sanshin (the three-stringed Okinawan banjo) twangs from a shop doorway on Kokusai Dori, and cold Orion beer is poured as soon as the sun drops. The island is fully summer: hot, bright and unhurried, with the sea at its most inviting. This is a month for beaches, the aquarium, island food and slow evenings in Naha.

What is the weather like in Okinawa in July?
July in Okinawa is hot, humid and the sunniest of the three summer months, with far less rain than June. The rainy stretch of early summer has loosened its grip, and the sky is often clear and bright.
| Month | Average high (°F) | Average low (°F) | Precipitation (in) | Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation | Hours of sunshine | Daylight on the 15th | Sea (°F) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| June | 85.6 | 77.4 | 11.20 | 11.3 | 160 | 13 h 46 min | 79.8 |
| July | 89.4 | 80.6 | 7.41 | 9.4 | 227 | 13 h 38 min | 84.4 |
| August | 89.2 | 80.2 | 9.45 | 12.3 | 206 | 13 h 05 min | 86.0 |
Even the nights stay warm, so you will not reach for a sweater after dinner. Humidity hangs in the air, which makes the heat feel heavier than the thermometer suggests. Light, loose clothes that dry quickly are the sensible choice, and a hat and sunscreen matter more than any layer.
Rain is a smaller part of the picture than in June, with fewer wet days. When it does come, a compact umbrella or a light rain jacket is enough. Indoor stops such as the aquarium or the covered shopping arcades in Naha are good places to wait out a shower.
The days are long, so there is plenty of daylight after a late lunch. Sunshine hours run well above June, which suits beach days and outdoor wandering. Pace yourself around the middle of the day and keep a bottle of water in your bag.
Can you swim in Okinawa in July?
Yes, the sea is warm enough for a long, unhurried swim, with surface water near Naha in the mid-80s. It is a clear step up from June, and August is a shade warmer still.
Okinawa Island has several beaches to choose from: Manza Beach, Emerald Beach, Okuma Beach, Zanpa Beach, Moon Beach and Sunset Beach in Chatan. Each has its own character and setting, and trying two or three over a stay gives a good sense of the island’s coast.
Okinawa is a subtropical island chain, and the water around it is the reason travelers come in summer. Snorkeling and diving trips suit this month’s warm sea. Wherever you swim, look at the posted notices on the beach before you go in.
What to do in Okinawa in July
July is a month for water, fruit and long evenings. The heat shapes the day: sightseeing happens in short bursts, with lunch in the shade and a swim or a cold drink in between. Okinawa was once the Ryukyu Kingdom, with its own language and culture, and that heritage shows in the food, the music and the castle on the hill.
Churaumi Aquarium
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium opened in November 2002 and remains one of the main reasons to cross the island. Inside, the tanks hold reef fish, rays and sharks, and a Japanese sawshark, a species the aquarium is trying to breed, has recently joined the collection. It is a cool, dim retreat from the July sun.
A visit fits naturally into a day with a beach stop afterward. The aquarium also works as a rain plan, since much of the experience is indoors. Once inside, move through the tanks at your own pace and leave time to linger at the biggest ones.
| Site | Open |

Naha: Kokusai Dori, Makishi market and Shuri Castle
Kokusai Dori is the main shopping street, lined with souvenir shops, awamori (the local distilled spirit) bars and places serving Okinawa soba. Side arcades branch off it and give shade and cover when the sky clouds over.
The Makishi market is where July’s fruit shows up, and where you can point at a fish and have it cooked upstairs. Shuri Castle is partly open to the public, though the main castle remains closed after the fire in 2019. You can still walk the grounds and see the reconstruction in progress.
Naha has Okinawa’s only public rail network, the Okinawa Urban Monorail, known as Yui Rail. It lifts you above the traffic and offers a different view of the city, a pleasant way to cover the distance between neighborhoods when the heat sets in.
What July tastes like
Summer on the island calls for goya champuru, a stir-fry of bitter melon, tofu, egg and pork, and for Okinawa soba, thick wheat noodles in a pork broth with tender rafute (braised pork belly). Taco rice, an Okinawan invention of taco filling over rice, is a standard cheap meal. Sea grapes, small green beads of seaweed that pop in the mouth, come with a splash of vinegar.
For something cold, look for shaved ice, mango and pineapple in season, and the tart juice of shikuwasa, a small local citrus. Sata andagi, round fried doughnuts, are sold at stalls and bakeries. In the evening, an izakaya (a Japanese pub) is the place for awamori and a cold Orion beer.
The island’s coast and its beaches
The beaches are the other half of a July trip. Emerald Beach, Okuma Beach, Manza Beach, Zanpa Beach, Moon Beach and Sunset Beach in Chatan each have their own surroundings, and some sit near resorts while others are quieter stretches of coast. The sea is at its warmest, so a day here can be built around swimming, snorkeling and long pauses under a parasol.
Bring a dry bag, reef-friendly sunscreen and plenty of water. If the sky turns gray, shift the plan to Naha or the aquarium and come back to the coast the next day.
A two-day itinerary for Okinawa in July
Day 1 belongs to Naha. Begin in the morning at Shuri Castle’s grounds, while the heat is still gentle, and walk the stone-paved lanes around the hill. Come down toward the pottery streets of Tsuboya, where workshops make the shisa lion-dogs that guard Okinawan rooftops.
At midday, settle in at a small place on or near Kokusai Dori for a bowl of Okinawa soba. Spend the afternoon in the covered arcades and the Makishi market, which are a good refuge from the sun, then take a break with shaved ice or fresh mango.
In the evening, the long July daylight gives you time for a stroll before dinner. Choose an izakaya for goya champuru, rafute and awamori. If rain sets in, stay under the arcades and make the market and a long meal the heart of the day.
Day 2 is for the coast. Reach Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium when it opens at 08:30 and spend the first part of the day among the tanks, which keeps you out of the heat and gives you time to see the large exhibits without hurrying. Allow yourself a long lunch afterward.
In the afternoon, head for the water: Emerald Beach and Okuma Beach are among the choices on the island, and the sea is at its warmest for a long swim. End the day at Sunset Beach in Chatan for dinner by the shore. If the weather turns, the aquarium is the indoor card, and a slow meal in a Naha restaurant will fill the evening.
Is Okinawa busy in July?
July is deep summer in Okinawa, and the island runs at a summer rhythm: beach days, long lunches and evenings that start late. The sunny weather and the warm sea give the month its character.
Naha Airport is the gateway to all of Okinawa’s islands, served by flights from dozens of cities across Japan, including low-cost carriers. That connectivity means the main island is reachable from many places and the islands beyond are within reach too.
The pace of the city follows the weather. Mornings and evenings are the natural times for walking, and the midday hours drift toward shaded arcades, cafés and museums. Beaches suit the long, bright afternoons, and the monorail makes it easy to move between Naha’s neighborhoods as the day warms up.
Think in terms of the rhythm of a hot day rather than a crowd: begin early, rest at midday and use the cooler hours for walking. Dinner tends to be a long affair, with awamori and plates passed around the table.
What to pack for Okinawa in July
Pack for heat, sun and the occasional shower, and keep everything light and quick to dry.
- Light, breathable shirts and shorts, since the days are hot and humid.
- A hat and sunscreen for the strong summer sun on the beaches and in Naha’s streets.
- A compact umbrella or light rain jacket for the showers that do come.
- Swimwear and a quick-dry towel for the warm sea.
- Sandals or shoes that dry fast, for wet pavement and the shore.
- A refillable water bottle for long days of sightseeing.
Good to know before you go
July is humid, with about nine days of measurable rain across the month, so plan a flexible day or two. Humidity stays high, which makes the heat feel stronger, so build rest into the middle of the day. The sea is warm and the sun is strong, and sun protection matters from the first morning.
Shuri Castle is partly open, but the main castle is closed after the fire in 2019, so plan for the grounds rather than the interior. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium keeps its set hours, and the last admission comes an hour before closing. Okinawa’s only rail line is the Yui Rail monorail in Naha, so beyond the city your plans will lean on other transport.
Okinawa in July vs June and August
Moving four weeks earlier brings you to June, the wettest of the three months, with more rainy days and a cooler sea. The skies are grayer and the humidity higher, so beach days are less certain. In exchange, the days are a touch longer and the heat is a little less intense.
Moving four weeks later brings August, with the warmest sea of the three and a heat that stays high. Rain returns more often than in July, and the sky is a little less bright. The sea is a shade warmer still, which swimmers will notice.
If you want the most sun and the least rain, July is the middle path. Choose June if you prefer slightly cooler air and do not mind showers. Choose August if the warmest sea matters most and you can accept more wet days.
Is July a good time to visit Okinawa?
Yes, for travelers who want beaches, warm water and a hot, bright summer. July brings the island’s sunniest weather of the season, a sea that invites long swims and the fruit and food of high summer.
It suits beach lovers, snorkelers and anyone who likes to eat well and move slowly. If heat and humidity wear you down quickly, another month may suit you better, since even the nights stay warm.
On arrival, start in Naha: settle in, walk Kokusai Dori and the Makishi market, and eat a first bowl of Okinawa soba. Then head to the coast and the aquarium. July here is mangoes at the market, a warm sea under a bright sky and a cold Orion at the end of a long day.
