SOUTH WALTON · MAY · THE MONTH GUIDE
In May the Gulf off South Walton averages 78.2°F and afternoons run 83.5°F. April water sits at 71.0°F, which stops most people at the knee. June afternoons reach 88.9°F, which moves the beach day to either end of the clock. May lands between the two, and it lands entirely before June 1, the day the Atlantic hurricane season opens.
Rain totals 3.22 inches across the month, under April’s 4.55 and June’s 4.70, spread across 3.7 days that record at least a tenth of an inch. Where to sleep among the sixteen beach neighborhoods and how to drive Scenic Highway 30A belong to the South Walton guide. What the date itself does to the trip is below.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SOUTH WALTON, MAY
May puts 78.2°F water under 83.5°F afternoons, keeps rain to 3.22 inches across 3.7 wet days, and finishes before the Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1.
83.5°F BY DAY · 78.2°F WATER · 3.7 RAIN DAYS · SUNSET 7:33 P.M.
Go for: swimming without June’s 88.9°F afternoons, the lightest rain total of the spring stretch at 3.22 inches, and 13 hours 45 minutes of daylight on May 15.
Think twice before: expecting bathwater. The Gulf averages 78.2°F in May against 82.9°F in June, and that figure is already a mean of daily maxima.

Every figure here carries a named source. The air normals come from NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 series at station USW00053853, the gauge at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, and the sea temperature comes from the Open-Meteo Marine API. Where we had nothing to read, we say so rather than estimate. For the state’s other eleven months, Florida’s month-by-month calendar sets May against the rest of the map.

NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00053853, the gauge at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, put May’s average high at 83.5°F, its average low at 68.0°F and its precipitation at 3.22 inches. Those are readings from an actual coastal thermometer averaged over thirty years, rather than a modeled grid cell spread across the Gulf, and the distinction is worth a sentence because the two methods can disagree by several degrees on overnight lows.
Rain reaches a tenth of an inch on 3.7 days in an average May, or measurable rain roughly one day in eight. Days delivering a full inch or more average 0.8, so a genuine soaking turns up in about four Mays out of five. Set against April’s 4.55 inches and June’s 4.70, the month’s 3.22 inches is the lightest total of the spring stretch.
The spread between an 83.5°F afternoon and a 68.0°F dawn runs 15.5 degrees. Pack one light layer for evenings outside and nothing heavier, plus a swimsuit you are willing to put on damp, since the warm afternoons dry nothing overnight at that low. Sun cover matters more than warm cover in May.
On May 15 the sun rises at 5:48 a.m. and sets at 7:33 p.m. Central time, for 13 hours 45 minutes of daylight. Usable light on the sand runs well past seven, which means the hottest stretch of the afternoon can go indoors without shortening the beach day by an hour.
Can you swim in South Walton in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off the South Walton beaches averages 78.2°F in May in the Open-Meteo Marine API’s 2015-2024 record. That average is built from daily maxima, so it reads a shade above a true 24-hour mean: the water at 7 a.m. will be a touch cooler than the water at 4 p.m., and a cloudy week pulls the whole thing down.
Water in the high 70s swims without a wetsuit and without a long negotiation at the edge for most people. April’s 71.0°F does not, at least not for long, and that 7.2-degree gap is the single biggest thing four weeks buys you in spring here. Half an hour of floating will still cool you down, so a towel between sessions earns its place in the bag.
We found no monthly wind or wave statistics for the Walton coast, so no surf or breeze figure appears here. The storm calendar we can date precisely: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, per the NOAA National Hurricane Center, which puts a May trip outside it from the first day to the last.
How busy is South Walton in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Walton County, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. Two calendar facts stand on their own: May is the last full month before the hurricane season opens on June 1, and it is the last full month before the Gulf hits 82.9°F and summer demand follows the water. Our Florida cost guide puts the statewide peaks at holiday weeks and spring break, and neither falls in May.
No booking-window data reached us for Walton County rentals, so we name no number of weeks. The choice that does have numbers behind it is geographic: sixteen marketed beach neighborhoods spread along 26 miles of coast, from Miramar Beach in the west to Inlet Beach in the east, and the drive between the ends is the difference between a five-minute errand and a half-hour one. Decide the neighborhood before the dates.
Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax, per Florida Department of Revenue form DR-15TDT. The two together add 11% to a quoted nightly rate. Add them before comparing two listings, because a quote that looks $30 cheaper on the screen may not be once the county’s share lands on it.
If one line in the budget changes what May feels like, it is the walk to the water. The county counts 63 public beach access points along its 26 miles of sand, and paying up for a place near one turns 78.2°F water into something you use three times a day. Everything else, including how you get around without a car, is covered in our getting-around guide.
Things to do in South Walton in May: Grayton Beach, Topsail Hill and Eden Gardens

May holds water at 78.2°F under afternoons of 83.5°F, and that pairing does not repeat on either side. April’s sea stops most swimmers at 71.0°F. June’s air reaches 88.9°F and its wet days climb from 3.7 to 6.1. Biking 30A at noon, paddling a dune lake, walking a full afternoon of dunes: all of it costs less effort in May than it will four weeks later.
Five state parks sit in Walton County: Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. We could not verify their current entry fees, so no gate price appears. The county also holds all fifteen of Florida’s coastal dune lakes, a phenomenon the state’s Department of Environmental Protection reports from only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon.
Scenic Highway 30A has held its Florida Scenic Highway designation since April 9, 2008. The program’s own documents give the corridor as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, so treat the length as a range and the drive as an afternoon. The Gulf climbs 71.0, 78.2, 82.9 across April, May and June while the air climbs 76.2, 83.5, 88.9: the water moves slowly, the air moves fast, and May is where the two lines meet in comfortable territory.
Walton County counts 63 public beach access points along its 26 miles of sand. We could not verify parking charges at individual accesses, so no figure appears for them. What does cost nothing in May is the long tail of the day: sunset at 7:33 p.m. leaves a full hour of soft light on the sand after most people have gone in to eat.
South Walton in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the coast. Sunrise is at 5:48 a.m., so an 8 a.m. walk from one of the public accesses still has cool sand. Swim between 10 and noon, when the Gulf is working toward its 78.2°F daily maximum. Take the 1 to 3 p.m. block indoors, at the top of the 83.5°F afternoon. Then Grayton Beach State Park from four, and the sand again for the 7:33 p.m. sunset.
Day two starts inland at Eden Gardens, moves along 30A between the beach neighborhoods, and ends at Topsail Hill Preserve or Deer Lake for the dune-lake shoreline. If the weather turns, remember that we have monthly rain totals and not hourly timing: 3.7 days a month record a tenth of an inch and only 0.8 records a full inch, so swap the beach block for the drive and come back to the water later the same day.
South Walton in May vs April and June
| Measure | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 76.2°F | 83.5°F | 88.9°F |
| Average low | 60.1°F | 68.0°F | 74.1°F |
| Precipitation | 4.55 in | 3.22 in | 4.70 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.0 | 3.7 | 6.1 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 71.0°F | 78.2°F | 82.9°F |
| Hurricane season | Outside | Outside | Opens June 1 |
May runs 7.3°F warmer by day than April and 5.4°F cooler than June. It is the driest of the three at 3.22 inches, against 4.55 in April and 4.70 in June, and its 3.7 wet days sit below April’s 4.0 and well below June’s 6.1. In the water the gap is wider than the air suggests: 7.2 degrees above April, 4.7 below June, all figures taken as means of daily maxima.
Shift four weeks back and you gain 60.1°F nights for sleeping with the windows open, and you give up swimming that lasts more than a few minutes. Shift four weeks forward and you gain water at 82.9°F, and you take on 88.9°F afternoons, two and a half more wet days, and a hurricane season that opens on the first of the month.
Is May a good time to visit South Walton?
Yes, for anyone whose trip depends on getting in the water. At 78.2°F the Gulf swims, and the afternoon that gets you out of it tops at 83.5°F instead of June’s 88.9. Say no if you need warm-bath water for small children who chill fast, or if your whole decision rests on finding the year’s lowest rate, which is a claim no Walton County data we could read supports.
If the answer is no, June is the honest alternative for water: 82.9°F, with 6.1 wet days, 4.70 inches and the storm calendar open from the first. Go the other way to April if the heat is the objection, and accept 71.0°F water, 76.2°F days and 60.1°F nights. The April page has that month in full.
Neither April nor June pairs swimmable water with afternoons that stay below 85°F, and neither runs a full thirty-one days clear of the Atlantic hurricane season. May does both, on 3.22 inches of rain.
The last word
Pick the neighborhood before you pick the week. Walton County’s 63 public access points spread over 26 miles of sand come to one marked way onto the beach roughly every four-tenths of a mile, so a unit two streets back is rarely stranded, and the money saved goes further at dinner. Build the rest around the numbers: water from ten to noon, the hot hour indoors, sunset at 7:33 p.m. And if 83.5°F still sounds like a degree too many, April runs 76.2°F with the Gulf at 71.0.
