South Walton in June: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Rental Tax

June is the month the water catches up with the air. The Gulf off South Walton averages 82.9°F, the afternoon normal is 88.9°F, and the sun stays up a little over fourteen hours. School is out across the South, the sixteen beach neighborhoods fill, and 26 miles of sand absorb the arrivals better than most coasts would.

What the month asks in return: 4.70 inches of rain spread over about six measurable days, a middle-of-the-day heat you plan around rather than fight, and the opening of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1. The statistical trouble comes much later, around September 10, but the calendar flips this month and refundable bookings start to matter.

Go for: water warm enough that nobody hesitates on entry, 14 hours 8 minutes of daylight on the 15th, 63 public beach access points along 26 miles of sand, and dune-lake mornings before the heat arrives.

Think twice before: booking a non-refundable June week without watching the tropics: the Atlantic hurricane season opens June 1, even though its busy weeks run from mid-August to mid-October.

Every figure here comes from two datasets that should not be mixed up. The air normals are NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 values read off a real thermometer, the airport station at Destin-Fort Walton Beach, west along the coast; the Gulf figure is a model average from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015 to 2024. Averages also flatten the June that runs cool and the June that bakes.

NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport station put the June average high at 88.9°F, the average low at 74.1°F and the month’s rain at 4.70 inches. That station is an airfield inland of the dunes, and it is the nearest official thermometer to the 30A neighborhoods. We found no beach-side station to compare it against, so treat the highs as an air-mass reading rather than a porch reading.

Measurable rain falls on 6.1 days in an average June, roughly one day in five with at least a tenth of an inch. Summer rain on this coast usually arrives as an afternoon cell rather than a gray morning front, so a storm rarely costs a whole beach day. It takes an hour or two out of the stretch that was going to be the hottest anyway, and the sand is back in use by five.

Day and night are 14.8°F apart, and a low of 74.1°F means nothing in the bag needs to be warm. Pack against sun and humidity instead: a hat, a rash guard for children who will be in the water for hours, plenty of sunscreen, and one long-sleeve layer for restaurant air conditioning. Shoes that survive salt water beat anything that has to stay dry.

June 15 carries 14 hours 8 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 5:41 a.m. and sunset at 7:49 p.m. Central. The late end does the most work on a vacation: the beach is still lit at 7:30, the walk back to the car happens in daylight, and dinner at eight costs no beach time. Morning belongs to whoever gets up, with two usable hours of sand before the heat means business.

Can you swim in South Walton in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The Gulf off South Walton averages 82.9°F in June, taken as the mean of daily maxima from 2015 to 2024 in the Open-Meteo Marine API. The framing matters. That is the warm end of each day rather than a 24-hour mean, so the water you walk into at eight in the morning runs a shade cooler than the headline, and tables built on 24-hour averages will list South Walton slightly lower.

In practice there is no gasp on entry and no clock on a swim. Children stay in until somebody makes them come out, and at 82.9°F the water gives back none of the cooling a 70°F sea would. Nothing pulls you out except sunburn, so a rash guard buys more water time than anything else you bring. Read the warning flag at your access point before the first swim of the day.

We could not verify June wind, wave or rip-current statistics for this stretch of coast, so we give no surf numbers. What we can date is the season: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October and a peak on September 10. A June week sits inside the season and well outside its busiest weeks.

How busy is South Walton in June? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

June sits in the summer school-holiday block, the season this coast was built around, and the rental houses along 30A run full. We found no monthly occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Walton County, so we crown no month the most expensive and quote no nightly figure. What the calendar does support: June competes with July and with the last week of May for the same beds.

Sixteen marketed beach neighborhoods share those 26 miles, from Miramar Beach at the west end to Inlet Beach at the east, and they are not interchangeable in June. Seaside and Rosemary Beach put dinner within walking distance of the house; Blue Mountain Beach and Dune Allen trade that for quiet. We could not verify booking lead times for the county, so we give no number of weeks, but the neighborhood is the decision, and our where-to-stay guide frames the wider Florida choice.

Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax, per the Department of Revenue’s form DR-15TDT. That is 11% on the rental rate before the cleaning fee, the booking fee or any parking charge a property adds on top. Those add-ons vary property by property and we could not verify them, so budget them as a question to ask at booking. Our cost guide covers the rest of the state.

One upgrade changes June more than any other: a bed within a short walk of the water. At 88.9°F you will go back and forth three times a day, for lunch, for the shade hour and for the second swim, and a front-row or second-row unit turns each trip into two minutes instead of a drive and a parking search. The view, the extra bedroom and the pool are comfort. The walk is time.

Things to do in South Walton in June: the dune lakes, Grayton Beach and Topsail Hill

June is the first month that both ends of the day work. A paddle on a dune lake at seven in the morning, a swim at six in the evening, and daylight holding to 7:49 p.m. In May the Gulf runs 78.2°F, which is swimmable but bracing for anyone under ten, and the evening beach session gets cut short well before eight.

Five state parks sit in Walton County: Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. Between those and the 63 public beach access points, the 26 miles of sand never compress into a single strip. The county also holds all 15 of Florida’s coastal dune lakes, a landform found in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon. Scenic Highway 30A has carried its state designation since April 9, 2008.

Florida springs hold close to the same temperature all year, which is exactly why June changes what they are worth: the contrast with 88.9°F air is the whole point at Ponce de Leon Springs, and it barely exists in the 83.5°F of May. Eden Gardens works the same way, where the draw at one in the afternoon is live oak shade rather than anything you came to look at. The dune lakes, tea-dark and shallow, make the shaded-morning option when the Gulf side is already glaring.

Walking onto the beach at a public access point costs nothing, and so does the 7:49 p.m. sunset that follows. We could not verify which of the 63 access points charge to park and which do not, so we name no free lot and no rate. Check before you drive to one, especially at the eastern end where the neighborhoods sit tightest together.

South Walton in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts with the 5:41 a.m. sunrise working for you. Beach by 7:30 while the sand is still walkable barefoot, first swim in 82.9°F water, back under cover around 11 as the air climbs toward its 88.9°F normal. Lunch and the shade hour indoors or under the oaks at Eden Gardens, then out again at 4:30 for the long end of the day, a second swim, and sunset at 7:49. Dinner runs after eight without costing a minute of sand.

Day two, go to Grayton Beach State Park for a dune lake and a beach in one stop, or to Topsail Hill Preserve for distance from the 30A traffic. If one of the month’s 6.1 wet days lands, expect an afternoon cell rather than an all-day front, so flip the order: eat or shop through the storm hour and take the beach at five, when the light is best and the sand refills slowly. Skip the paddle when the flag says otherwise.

South Walton in June vs May and July

Measure May June July
Average high 83.5°F 88.9°F 90.9°F
Average low 68.0°F 74.1°F 76.2°F
Precipitation 3.22 in 4.70 in 5.77 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 3.7 6.1 7.2
Gulf surface (daily maxima) 78.2°F 82.9°F 85.9°F

The three months climb in step. Average highs run 83.5°F, 88.9°F and 90.9°F; the Gulf runs 78.2°F, 82.9°F and 85.9°F. Rain rises faster than heat, from 3.22 inches on 3.7 measurable days in May to 4.70 on 6.1 days in June and 5.77 on 7.2 days in July. On every line June sits nearer July than May: a July with two degrees shaved off the afternoon and one fewer wet day.

Move back four weeks and you trade 4.7°F of water temperature for 2.4 fewer wet days and nights at 68.0°F instead of 74.1°F, which is the difference between sleeping with the doors open and running the air conditioning. Our May read makes that case in full. Move forward four weeks and you gain 3.0°F in the Gulf and lose an extra wet day, plus the deeper end of hurricane-season anxiety on a non-refundable booking.

Is June a good time to visit South Walton?

Yes, if the trip is built around water. At 82.9°F the Gulf asks nothing of you, the light holds until 7:49 p.m., and small children get two swims a day without ever shivering. No, if you came for quiet or for hiking: the beach neighborhoods are at their fullest, and 88.9°F with Gulf humidity is not weather for a long walk at noon. Traveling with kids tilts the answer firmly toward yes.

If the heat is the objection, May is the month to take instead: 83.5°F days, 68.0°F nights, 3.22 inches over 3.7 days, and a Gulf at 78.2°F that most adults swim in without complaint. If the crowd is the objection, look past this pair entirely and read the statewide calendar before you pick dates.

What June holds that no other month does: the longest light of the year, 14 hours 8 minutes on the 15th, over water already at 82.9°F, with a full wet day fewer than July.

The last word

Book the house for its walk to the sand rather than its view, put both swims at the ends of the day, and leave the middle to shade and lunch. One figure worth holding on to before a forecast talks you out of the week: an average June carries just 1.4 days with an inch of rain or more, so the odds favor losing an afternoon rather than a day. Budget the 11% that county and state take on the rental, and the rest of the money goes on the beach.
