SOUTH WALTON · APRIL · FLORIDA PANHANDLE
April in South Walton runs 76.2°F in the afternoon and 60.1°F before dawn, with the Gulf at 71.0°F and 12 hours 58 minutes of daylight on the 15th. Hurricane season is still six weeks away. What the month will not hand you is a long, lazy swim: at 71.0°F the water is a decision, and most people make it once a day, around the time the air peaks.
For anyone already holding dates, the real question is whether to keep them or slide the vacation four weeks either way. The 26 miles of sand and the sixteen marketed beach neighborhoods do not change between March and May. The sea does, by 10.7°F across those eight weeks, and so does the cost of being outside at noon.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SOUTH WALTON, APRIL
April gives you mild 76.2°F afternoons, four wet days and a 71.0°F Gulf: warm enough to walk and ride the coast all day, cool enough that swimming stays a short, deliberate dip.
INSIDE FLORIDA’S DRY SEASON · NO HURRICANE SEASON UNTIL JUNE 1 · SPRING-BREAK WEEKS MOVE YEAR TO YEAR
Go for: midday walking and cycling on 30A, the coastal dune lakes, five state parks and a first swim of the year that does not need courage, only commitment.
Think twice before: building a beach week around hours in the water. May’s Gulf runs 78.2°F against April’s 71.0°F, and that is the gap between swimming and dipping.

One measurement note before the numbers. Every air figure here is a 1991–2020 normal from the NOAA station at Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport, a real thermometer on the ground rather than a grid-cell reanalysis. The sea figure comes from a marine model instead, and it is an average of daily maxima. Both are named again where they are used.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publishes the county’s normals from station USW00053853 at Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport, over 1991 to 2020: average high 76.2°F, average low 60.1°F, 4.55 inches of rain. That high is the number to plan around. It is the temperature at which a long afternoon on the sand needs no shade strategy and a bike hour on the coast road needs no early start.
The rain arrives in lumps. Only 4.0 days in an average April record a tenth of an inch or more, roughly one day in seven or eight, and 1.4 of those days deliver an inch or better. Four and a half inches falling across four days means the wet weather comes with a front, holds for hours, then leaves. Plan the month as mostly dry with one soaking day in it, and keep that day flexible rather than fighting it.
Between the 76.2°F afternoon and the 60.1°F dawn sits a 16.1°F spread, and it is wider than most visitors pack for. A bathing suit covers two in the afternoon; dinner outdoors after dark, with a sea breeze behind it, is a fleece or a long-sleeve situation for everyone at the table. Pack both ends of that range and one waterproof layer for the inch-plus day.
Light is generous without being punishing. On April 15 the sun comes up at 6:15 am and sets at 7:13 pm Central, giving 12 hours 58 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org). Dinner on a west-facing deck lands squarely at sunset, and a beach walk afterward still works. Coffee at 6:30 on an empty stretch of sand is the part of April that July cannot copy.
Can you swim in South Walton in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The Gulf off South Walton averages 71.0°F in April according to the Open-Meteo Marine model, averaged over 2015 to 2024. Read that figure carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it describes the warmest part of the afternoon and sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Early-morning water is cooler than 71.0°F, and no model here tells you by how much.
In practice, 71.0°F is a short swim. Most adults get ten or fifteen honest minutes before the novelty wears off; children who have driven a long way stay in until called. The variable that decides comfort is the exit, not the entry, and this is where April helps: coming out into a 76.2°F afternoon with a towel is pleasant, while the same swim before 9 am, at closer to 60°F on the air, is a bracing memory.
We could not verify a monthly wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so no wind speeds or wave heights appear here. What the record does give is the timing: the Atlantic hurricane season opens June 1 and peaks September 10 (NOAA National Hurricane Center), so April’s rough days come from ordinary spring fronts, the same ones behind those 1.4 inch-plus rain days. Read the surf warnings posted at whichever beach access you use.
How busy is South Walton in April? Crowds, prices and the lodging tax
April falls inside the dry season that our Florida timing guide runs from November to April, and it is the last month of it. We found no monthly occupancy or room-rate series for Walton County, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. Two calendar facts do the sorting instead: school spring breaks and Easter land in March or April depending on the year, and the storm season that shadows fall bookings does not start until June 1.
Book against your own dates, not against the month. A Gulf-front rental during a break week and the identical unit in the last week of April are two different markets, and since we could not verify any lead-time data for the county, we will not invent a number of weeks. Four nights is the shortest stay that repays a long drive or a flight into Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport, the same site as the weather station above. A three-night weekend works only if you are already in the region.
On the lodging bill, one figure is fixed and public. Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax (Florida Department of Revenue, form DR-15TDT). That is 11% added to a quoted nightly rate before any cleaning or resort charge appears. We could not verify which properties add those extra charges, so read the line items before you confirm.
The upgrade that changes the month rather than the invoice is the beach side of the road. With sunrise at 6:15 and sunset at 7:13, a Gulf-front unit means you use both ends of the day on foot, in a bathing suit, without moving the car. From north of 30A, every 71.0°F dip becomes a walk to one of the county’s 63 public beach access points, and we could not verify which of them charge for parking.
Things to do in South Walton in April: Grayton Beach, Topsail Hill and the coastal dune lakes

This is the month for moving under your own power. At 76.2°F you can ride the coast road at noon, walk a trail at eleven and paddle a dune lake in the middle of the afternoon without rationing the day around heat. In May the same hours run 83.5°F. In March the water is 67.5°F, cold enough that the swim stops being part of the plan.
The named inventory is unusually concrete. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection counts 26 miles of sandy beach and 63 public access points in Walton County, plus five state parks: Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. The county also holds all 15 of Florida’s coastal dune lakes, a landform repeated in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon. Official documents give the 30A corridor as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, so we state no single length.
Water moves slowly here and air moves fast, and the gap between them is what makes a season. The Gulf has gained 3.5°F since March, from 67.5°F to 71.0°F, while the afternoon air gained 5.5°F and will gain another 7.3°F by May. So a trail at Topsail Hill Preserve that wants a dawn start once the air hits 83.5°F is a comfortable mid-morning outing at 76.2°F, and the paddle that follows it is warm enough to be worth the launch.
Walking costs nothing, and April makes it the best value on the coast. Those 63 access points are public by designation, and the corridor they serve has been a designated Florida Scenic Highway since April 9, 2008, which makes this month its anniversary. We could not verify current entry fees for the five state parks or parking charges at the accesses, so budget for both rather than assuming either.
South Walton in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Out at 6:15 for sunrise on an empty beach, in a jacket, because the air is near 60°F. Breakfast at eight, then Grayton Beach State Park from nine to eleven while the air climbs. Lunch inland, out of the wind. The swim goes at two or three, when the 76.2°F afternoon makes the 71.0°F water tolerable on the way out. Ride or walk a stretch of the corridor at five, and time dinner to the 7:13 sunset with the fleece in the bag.
Day two. Topsail Hill Preserve in the morning, then a dune lake and Eden Gardens after lunch, with the car doing the linking between neighborhoods. If this is the inch-plus day, give it to the road instead: the sixteen beach communities sit strung along the same corridor, and Seaside, Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach each hold an hour under cover of shops and porches. Fronts here pass rather than settle, so plan the swim for the afternoon after.
South Walton in April vs March and May
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 70.7°F | 76.2°F | 83.5°F |
| Average low | 53.6°F | 60.1°F | 68.0°F |
| Precipitation | 4.70 in | 4.55 in | 3.22 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 5.2 | 4.0 | 3.7 |
| Sea surface, mean of daily maxima | 67.5°F | 71.0°F | 78.2°F |
Air figures for all three months come from the same NOAA station and the same 1991–2020 period, and the sea figures from the same marine model, so the comparison is clean. April sits 5.5°F above March in the afternoon and 7.3°F below May. Nights climb faster still, 6.5°F above March and 7.9°F under May. Rain barely moves between March and April, 4.70 inches against 4.55, then drops to 3.22 inches in May with 3.7 wet days.
Shift forward four weeks and you buy water: 78.2°F in May against 71.0°F now, the difference between a dip and an afternoon of swimming, plus an inch and a third less rain. You pay for it with 83.5°F afternoons and nights that no longer cool to 60°F. Shift back to March and you lose 3.5°F of sea and gain 1.2 extra wet days, with no rain saving at all. April is the compromise that keeps the outdoor hours.
Is April a good time to visit South Walton?
For walkers, cyclists, paddlers and families with small children who treat the Gulf as a wading pool, yes, clearly. Thirteen hours of daylight, 76.2°F afternoons, four wet days and no hurricane season make this an easy month to fill. For anyone whose whole reason for coming is to be in the water for hours, no. At 71.0°F you will be out and toweling off before the rest of the group has settled on the sand.
If the swimming is the point, take May. The Gulf runs 78.2°F, rain falls to 3.22 inches over 3.7 days, and the trade is a 68.0°F night and a 83.5°F afternoon that pushes hiking and cycling toward the early hours. Either way, the storm calendar stays on your side: June 1 is the opening date, so both months sit outside it.
Only April puts a Gulf already 3.5°F warmer than March under afternoons still 7.3°F cooler than May, and that pairing is what lets one day hold a trail, a paddle and a swim.
The last word
Pick the beach side of the road and four nights, and April does the rest of the work for you. The county markets sixteen distinct neighborhoods, from Miramar Beach and Sandestin at one end to Seacrest, Alys Beach and Inlet Beach at the other, with Dune Allen and Blue Mountain Beach quieter in between, and in a 76.2°F month you can see several of them on a bicycle instead of from a parking space. Then come back in March if you prefer your sand empty, or in May if you want the water.
