SOUTH WALTON · FEBRUARY · 30.3° N
Afternoons average 65.8°F along Walton County’s 26 miles of sand in February, and the 63 public beach access points have room in them. The Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, is nowhere near the calendar. Scenic Highway 30A carries more bikes than beach traffic, and the low winter light runs clean from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach.
The Gulf averages 62.1°F this month, about 5.4°F under March and 1.7°F above January. Families who booked for swimming will spend the week on the sand. Anyone who came for the coastal dune lakes, the five state parks and a bike gets the 30A corridor without the summer traffic, at a price of one jacket per evening.

Every air figure here comes from a real thermometer: NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00053853 at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport. Sea temperature comes from somewhere else, an Open-Meteo marine model averaged over 2015-2024, and we say so every time we use it. Where to sleep among the sixteen beach neighborhoods and what a Florida week costs belong to our lodging guide and the trip-cost breakdown.

Across NOAA’s 1991-2020 period, February at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport station averages 65.8°F by day and 47.9°F at night. That is a long-sleeve afternoon on the beach and a jacket the moment the sun is down. One night in an average February drops to 32°F or below, which catches out people who packed for the Florida of the brochures.
The month’s 4.96 inches sounds heavy until you see how it lands: 5.3 days record at least a tenth of an inch, and 1.7 days record a full inch or more. Measurable rain shows up roughly one day in six. When it comes it tends to hold for hours, so a wet February day here is rarely the twenty-minute summer downpour you can wait out under an awning.
Nearly 18 degrees separate the average high from the average low, so pack for two climates inside one day. Long pants and a windbreaker for the beach after 5 pm, a fleece for the freezing night the normals promise, shorts for the middle hours. Add one warm layer beyond what the forecast suggests, since 47.9°F is an average and not a floor.
On February 15 the sun rises at 6:23 am and sets at 5:33 pm Central time, giving about 11 hours 10 minutes of daylight. That early sunset is worth planning around: the beach light turns gold in the late afternoon, and dinner happens after dark whichever neighborhood you chose. Anything that needs full daylight, a long 30A ride or a dune lake walk, wants to start before 3 pm.
Can you swim in South Walton in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine model puts the Gulf off South Walton at 62.1°F for February, averaged over 2015-2024. One qualification travels with that figure: it is the mean of daily maxima, so a full 24-hour average would read a shade cooler. It also comes from a model, while the air numbers come from a station, and the two sit in different leagues of pedigree.
Expect to wade. Ankles and shins are pleasant on a sunny afternoon, a full swim is short and loud, and children lose interest in about the time it takes to get them changed. Surfcasters, shell walkers and anyone with a wetsuit will use the water daily. If the trip depends on swimming, a heated pool carries the week, and March’s 67.5°F is only four weeks out.
On wind and waves we come up short: we found no wave-height or wind series for this stretch of the Panhandle, so we publish no surf figures and no advice about chop. What the station measures is temperature and rain, and on those two the month is well documented. For water conditions, read the National Weather Service marine forecast the morning you go.
How busy is South Walton in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
February sits in the gap between the holiday weeks and spring break, and entirely outside hurricane season. That much is calendar, and it is verifiable. What we do not have is a price series: we found no occupancy or room-rate data for Walton County, so we crown no month cheapest and quote no nightly figure.
Without that data we will not invent a number of weeks to book ahead. The turn is datable, though. Spring break reaches the Panhandle in March, so a Gulf-front house held for late February and the same house held for mid-March sit in two different demand seasons. Book refundable terms where you can, because 1.7 days of this month bring an inch of rain or more and you may want to shuffle a day.
Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax, per the Department of Revenue’s form DR-15TDT. That is 11% stacked on the advertised nightly rate, in February as in July. Put it in the budget before you compare two listings, since one of them may already be showing it and the other may not.
If you spend extra on one thing this month, spend it on heat. A heated pool or a hot tub turns a 65.8°F afternoon into the water time the Gulf will not provide at 62.1°F, and it is the single amenity that changes what February feels like. Confirm with the property that the pool is heated in February, since heating is often seasonal and always worth an email.
Things to do in South Walton in February: Grayton Beach, Topsail Hill and the dune lakes

The trails are usable at midday in February, and the beach walk that costs sweat in August becomes a 65.8°F errand. None of it falls inside hurricane season. This is the month for the dry half of South Walton: the dune lakes, the pine flatwoods and the road itself, designated a Florida Scenic Highway on April 9, 2008.
Five state parks sit in Walton County: Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. Between them and the 63 public access points strung along 26 miles of sand, the Gulf is reachable almost anywhere on this coast. The oddity worth the drive is the coastal dune lakes, 15 of them here, a landform found in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon.
Air temperature swings with the season, and the water follows slowly and unevenly. The Gulf reads 62.1°F and the dune lakes cool with it, while Ponce de Leon Springs runs on groundwater and holds far steadier than anything above it. We could not verify a temperature for the spring, so we give none. The practical effect of the cool air is simple: Topsail Hill’s trails and Deer Lake’s boardwalk are walkable at noon rather than at dawn.
On money our cards are on the table: we verified no entrance fee for the five state parks and no parking rate at the public accesses, so we quote no figure and you should check each one before you drive. What costs nothing along all 26 miles is the sunset, and in February it happens at 5:33 pm, early enough to watch it and still have a whole evening left.
South Walton in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one: breakfast indoors, then Grayton Beach State Park from about 9 am, once the air has climbed off its 47.9°F overnight low. Walk the sand and the dune lake edge through the warm middle of the day, when the average tops out near 65.8°F. Ride or drive a stretch of 30A after lunch, take an access point for the 5:33 pm sunset, then dinner, because dark is what you have from half past five onward.
Day two goes west and inland: Topsail Hill Preserve for pine flatwoods and dune lakes, Eden Gardens for something planted and level, Deer Lake for the boardwalk down to the beach. If one of the month’s 5.3 wet days lands on you, make it a driving day along the corridor between Inlet Beach and Dune Allen, since the rain here settles in for hours. Ponce de Leon Springs sits inland if the drive wants a destination.
South Walton in February vs January and March
| Measure | January | February | March |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 63.1°F | 65.8°F | 70.7°F |
| Average low | 45.3°F | 47.9°F | 53.6°F |
| Precipitation | 4.52 in | 4.96 in | 4.70 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 5.6 | 5.3 | 5.2 |
| Sea surface (marine model) | 60.4°F | 62.1°F | 67.5°F |
Put the three months side by side and the order runs as expected, with one surprise. February is 2.7°F warmer by day than January and 4.9°F cooler than March, with nights 2.6°F above January and 5.7°F below March. The surprise is rain: February carries the largest total of the three at 4.96 inches, yet spreads it over fewer wet days than January’s 5.6. The Gulf, per the marine model, goes 60.4°F, 62.1°F, then 67.5°F.
Shift four weeks forward and you buy 5.4°F of water and 4.9°F of air, paid for with spring break traffic on a two-lane road. Shift four weeks back to January and you give up 1.7°F in the Gulf and pick up half a wet day, for a quieter beach still. February lands in the middle, and for a walking trip the middle is the good seat.
Is February a good time to visit South Walton?
Yes for anyone whose trip works on land. Beach walkers, cyclists, birders, photographers after that 5:33 pm light and couples who want 26 miles of sand with elbow room get exactly what they came for at 65.8°F. No for swimmers, and no for families whose children measure a vacation in hours spent in water, because 62.1°F is too cold to carry a week.
If that is your group, take March and take the crowds with it: 70.7°F afternoons, 53.6°F nights and a Gulf at 67.5°F, at the cost of sharing 30A with spring break. April would be warmer again, though we hold no April normals, so we put no figure on it. Our Florida timing guide takes the same question statewide.
One thing belongs to February alone: the water’s first move upward, 1.7°F above January, on a coast four months clear of the June 1 start of hurricane season, with all five state parks comfortable at noon.
The last word
Book the house, pack the jacket, stop planning the swim. South Walton sells itself as sixteen beach neighborhoods, Miramar Beach through Inlet Beach, and in February the choice between them is a question of how far you want to walk before dinner, since all sixteen sit under the same 65.8°F. Put the one upgrade that counts into a heated pool, keep the 1.7 days of heavy rain in mind when you pick your refundable dates, and let the Gulf be scenery until March.
