Best Resorts in Belize: Beach, Island and Rainforest Stays Compared

Early in the morning on Ambergris Caye, the sea is still and the thatched roofs along the sand are just waking up, with coffee carried out to the deck and a kayak already pulled to the water’s edge. A few hours inland, the same hour sounds different: birds in the canopy, the Macal River moving past a lodge, a hammock swaying on a porch.

What are the best-known resorts in Belize?

The names that come up again and again are Victoria House and Matachica on Ambergris Caye, Cayo Espanto and Thatch Caye on private islands, Itz’ana, Turtle Inn and Hamanasi on the southern coast, and Chaa Creek, Ka’ana and Blancaneaux Lodge in the western hills. Each one offers a different kind of stay, from barefoot beach rooms to jungle villas, so the choice depends on whether you want sea, forest, or both in one trip.

Ambergris Caye: Victoria House and Matachica

Victoria House Resort and Spa sits on the east side of Ambergris Caye, facing the Caribbean, at 22 Coconut Drive in San Pedro. You choose among Casitas, Palmetto Rooms, Suites or Villas, and the grounds include outdoor infinity-edged pools and a private beach. Two restaurants split the mood: Palmilla for fine dining, and Admiral Nelson’s Beach Bar when you want something casual and lively.

Bicycles, kayaks and paddleboards are on hand for guests, which makes mornings easy to fill without leaving the property. Matachica Resort and Spa, on the northern end of the island, is adults only, with 33 thatched-roof casitas and villas. The Seafront Luxury Suites have a private terrace with a plunge pool, and the Seabreeze Luxury Villa suits adult families or small groups.

At Matachica, meals come from the Mambo Bistro (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and cocktails from Danny’s Tree Bar. Jade Spa works with local ingredients such as papaya, banana and coffee. Guests can snorkel vivid reefs just steps from their casita. A sister property, GAÏA River Lodge, is recommended for pairing in one trip.

Private islands: Cayo Espanto and Thatch Caye

Cayo Espanto is an ultra-luxury private island resort just three miles off the coast of San Pedro. Every premium villa is seafront, on the beach, with its own private pool.

Dining is all-inclusive, with award-winning cuisine tailored to each guest, and spa treatments such as massages and facials are given in your own private oasis. The resort has been nominated for Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2025 in the Best Private Island Resort category.

Thatch Caye Resort is also a private island, and it hosts only 30 guests at a time. You sleep in overwater bungalows with Caribbean views if you book that style, gather for farm-to-table shared meals, and settle into the Coco Lounge for TV, gourmet coffee and high-speed WiFi. An on-site 5-Star PADI Dive Operation serves divers, and the resort received TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Best of Best Award in 2025.

The southern coast: Itz’ana, Turtle Inn and Hamanasi

Itz’ana Belize Resort and Residences fronts a pristine white-sand beach on the Caribbean in Placencia. Arrival brings a minibar, a cheese board and a bottle of wine, and stays include two complimentary massages and a fishing session on the lagoon. Kids up to 14 stay free with breakfast included. The Beach Villas are multi-bedroom, with kitchens, decks and plunge pools, while the Marina Villas sit just steps from the marina.

Turtle Inn lies at the end of the Placencia peninsula, with 28 thatched, open-air dwellings right on the sand, furnished with hand-carved Balinese wood. Francis and Eleanor Coppola found this stretch of beach in 2001. The fishing village of Placencia is a short walk or bicycle ride along the shore.

Hamanasi Adventure and Dive Resort lies on the beach south of Hopkins village, between the Maya Mountains and the sea. Its 45 acres include a private nature preserve and four eco zones: Beachfront, Littoral Forest, Pond and Savannah. Guests borrow kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and bicycles, and climb to the Lookout on top of the Great House for views of both the sea and the mountains.

The western jungle: Chaa Creek, Ka’ana and Blancaneaux

The Lodge at Chaa Creek stands on the banks of the Macal River in western Belize and was founded in 1981 as one of the country’s first eco-resorts. Rooms range from the rustic Belize Rainforest Retreat to the Ix Chel Luxury Rainforest Villas with private Jacuzzis and plunge pools. Five percent of room revenue supports environmental and community projects, and its Pack-a-Pound program supplies school kids in need.

Ka’ana Resort is in San Ignacio, at the doorstep of the ancient Maya site Xunantunich. New Signature Villas come in one-, two- and three-bedroom versions tucked into the jungle. Ool Spa offers relaxation treatments in a natural setting, and guests can join a Maya cooking class. Ka’ana Adventures runs excursions to Maya sites, cave paddling and birdwatching.

Blancaneaux Lodge, in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, opened to the public in 1993 after Francis Ford Coppola bought it in the early 1980s. Its 20 thatched-roof rooms carry Guatemalan décor, and waterfalls tumble into turquoise pools above the jungle canopy. From this remote mountain setting, guests can explore the ancient Maya civilization.

How do they compare?

They compare by setting more than by anything else: sand underfoot, a whole island to yourself, or a river and rainforest outside the door. Within each setting, the differences lie in size, who the resort is built for, and what is included.

Who each stay suits

Couples looking for quiet will look at Matachica, which is adults only, or at Thatch Caye, with its 30-guest limit. Families have a clear option in Itz’ana, where children up to 14 stay free with breakfast, and where the Marina Villas are built for families or longer stays. Matachica’s Seabreeze Luxury Villa is aimed at adult families or small groups.

Divers can look to Thatch Caye and its on-site PADI operation, or to Hamanasi, which calls itself an adventure and dive resort. Travelers drawn to Maya history have Ka’ana beside Xunantunich, Chaa Creek on the Macal River, and Blancaneaux for exploring the ancient civilization from the hills.

What is included and what the days look like

At Cayo Espanto, dining is all-inclusive and spa treatments happen in your private oasis. Itz’ana adds a welcome minibar, cheese board and wine, two massages and a lagoon fishing session. Thatch Caye serves shared, farm-to-table meals, which makes dinner a communal affair rather than a table for two.

At Hamanasi and Victoria House, bikes, kayaks and paddleboards are there for guests to use, and Hamanasi also provides beach chairs, hammocks and towels. Booking Ka’ana directly brings a lowest-rate guarantee, free Wi-Fi and continental breakfast for two, with a best available rate of $214 listed by the resort.

Rooms differ as much as meals. Turtle Inn’s dwellings are open to the air, and Blancaneaux’s are thatched with Guatemalan décor. Chaa Creek runs from rustic to villas with private Jacuzzis and plunge pools, which lets one property cover quite different budgets and tastes.

Where are they?

They spread over four parts of Belize: the island of Ambergris Caye and the private islands near it, the Placencia and Hopkins coast in the south, and the western hills around San Ignacio and the Mountain Pine Ridge.

Ambergris Caye and the private islands

Ambergris Caye is the largest of about 200 cayes off the Belize coast, 25 miles long and just over a mile wide in some places, in the Caribbean Sea just off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. Victoria House sits on its east side at San Pedro, while Matachica occupies the northern end.

Cayo Espanto lies three miles off the coast of San Pedro, so it pairs naturally with an island stay. Thatch Caye is a private island resort in Belize, and only 30 guests share it at any one time.

Placencia and Hopkins

Itz’ana is at Mile 20 on the Placencia Road, in the Stann Creek District, on a white-sand beach. Turtle Inn is farther along, at the end of the Placencia peninsula, within a short walk or bike ride of the fishing village of Placencia.

Hamanasi is on the beach south of Hopkins village, between the Maya Mountains and the Caribbean. Its saltwater infinity pool and the Great House, with lobby, restaurant, library, bar and gift shop, anchor the grounds, and the preserve behind the beach holds the Littoral Forest and Savannah zones.

Western Belize

The Lodge at Chaa Creek is on the banks of the Macal River. Ka’ana is in San Ignacio in the Cayo District, at the doorstep of Xunantunich. Blancaneaux Lodge is in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, where waterfalls fall into turquoise pools above the canopy.

Chaa Creek offers combined beach and rainforest packages with partner resorts on Ambergris Caye and in Placencia, and Matachica recommends combining its beach stay with its sister property, GAÏA River Lodge. Together they make it simple to see both coast and jungle in a single trip.
