Port Antonio sits at the far northeast corner of the island, hours past the point where package tourism gives up, and that distance is the whole product. No cruise berth, no wristbands, no continuous wall of all-inclusives along the shore. What Portland kept instead is the greenest parish in Jamaica, a lagoon that changes color between morning and lunch, jerk cooked where jerk was invented, and a discreet villa culture that predates the resort era by decades.

Blue Lagoon, Frenchman’s Cove and Winnifred Beach: entry, swimming and getting there

The Blue Lagoon is not a beach at all. Cold freshwater springs push up through the floor of a deep basin and meet the sea at the mouth, which is why the surface reads jade at nine in the morning and navy by two in the afternoon, and why the swim starts with a shock. Local skippers run small boats from the landing and will happily float you out to the middle for the temperature trick. Rates are negotiated on the spot rather than posted, so carry cash and settle the number before the engine starts.

Frenchman’s Cove, where a cold river curls across the sand into the sea, belongs to a resort and charges a day-visitor fee at the gate (est., not published reliably online). You will see it called the most beautiful beach in Jamaica in a great many places. That line comes from the property’s own marketing, and the cove earns its money anyway, mostly because the river-and-sea combination gives kids two water temperatures within one towel’s reach.

Winnifred Beach at Fairy Hill is the counterweight: community-managed, no resort gate, fish and festival cooked by the vendors who kept the access fight alive for years. It is where Portland actually swims on a Sunday, and the etiquette is simple. Buy your lunch from the people running the place.

Boston Bay jerk and rafting the Rio Grande

Boston Bay, ten minutes east of Frenchman’s Cove, is where jerk was codified: pork and chicken smoked slow over pimento wood in long roadside pits, sold by weight, chopped with a cleaver onto foil with festival and a slice of hard-dough bread. Several pits operate side by side and the competition is friendly rather than theatrical. Bring small bills, expect smoke in your clothes for the rest of the day, and ask for the sauce on the side if you have any doubt about your pepper tolerance.

Rafting the Rio Grande is Portland’s other signature, a slow drift on a bamboo raft poled by a licensed captain from Berridale down toward the coast, with a stop or two for a swim and a Red Stripe from a riverbank cooler. Fares are quoted per raft rather than per head and we have not verified a current figure (est.), so confirm with your hotel before you set out and budget the captain’s tip separately. The trip runs a couple of hours (est.) at the river’s pace, not yours.

Where to stay in Port Antonio: town, San San Bay or the hills

Town puts you on Titchfield hill above the marina, walking distance from the market and the patty counters, with the cheapest rooms in the parish. San San Bay and the road east hold the villas and small hotels that made Port Antonio’s reputation among people who could have gone anywhere. The hills behind trade sea access for cool nights and a view over the whole coastline. Hurricane Melissa landed far to the west of here, but reopening has moved at different speeds by coast, so check the recovery tracker and book on recent reviews.

Getting around is the real planning variable. Route taxis run the coast road in daylight, driving is on the left, and the mountain roads inland reward patience over speed, all covered in the transport guide and the driving page. Reach Falls and the Blue Mountains’ east side from Port Antonio

Reach Falls, half an hour east toward Manchioneal (est.), is the waterfall the north-coast day-trip machine never reaches, and the contrast with the famous one is half the argument for driving this far. The Blue Mountains climb straight out of Portland on their wetter eastern flank, a different approach from the Kingston side mapped in the range guide. And the coast road south past Long Bay makes an unhurried afternoon of swimming stops.

Port Antonio asks for three nights minimum and pays them back in specifics: the cold shock at the lagoon’s spring line, a raft captain naming the birds on the Rio Grande, foil-wrapped pork at Boston Bay eaten standing up as the light goes. This is also the rainiest corner of the island, which is precisely why everything here is that green. Pack the rain layer from the packing list and stop treating a wet hour as a ruined day.
