Every figure here comes from a model reanalysis computed for the grid cell at 18.18°N, 76.45°W, over Port Antonio at the wet north-eastern end of the island. Our climate source reads that corner as the rainiest in Jamaica, so these numbers belong to Port Antonio alone and should not be carried to Negril or Kingston. For the island-wide calendar, see the best time to visit Jamaica.

The 1991-2020 normals give March an average high of 80.4°F and an average low of 72.2°F, with 3.81 inches of precipitation. They are ERA5 reanalysis values served by Open-Meteo: a weather model’s reconstruction for the grid cell over town. No airport station thermometer sits behind them, so treat them as a close reading of the area rather than a measurement at one spot.

In an average March, 8.6 days record at least 0.10 inch of rain, a little more than one day in four. Only 0.3 day reaches an inch or more, roughly one heavy day every three Marches. On a seven-night trip that works out to about two wet days, and on nearly all of them the total stays under an inch.

From the 80.4°F afternoon to the 72.2°F night, the spread is 8.2°F. Pack for warm weather around the clock: light cotton, a thin long-sleeve layer for air-conditioned rooms and a packable rain shell for the wet days. A sweater can stay home. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest of the bag.

On March 15 the sun rises at 6:12 a.m. and sets at 6:16 p.m. local time (UTC-5), for about 12 hours 5 minutes of daylight. Plan outdoor sightseeing to wrap up by 6 p.m., and book dinner for after dark.

Can you swim in Port Antonio in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Yes. The sea surface off Port Antonio averages 81.8°F in March, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade lower.

At 81.8°F, the water sits 1.4°F above the average afternoon high and 9.6°F above the 72.2°F night low. A midday swim feels close to the air temperature. Get in early in the morning or right after sunset and the water feels warm against the cooler air.

We could not verify wind or swell data for Port Antonio in March, so we give no wave height and no calm-sea pattern. Check the marine forecast when you arrive, and ask your hotel which shore is sheltered that day before you head out.

How busy is Port Antonio in March? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Port Antonio, so we place March in no price ranking against the other eleven months. To build a daily budget for the island, start with our Jamaica trip-cost guide.

Without a rate series, we won’t name a number of weeks to book ahead. The weather data does support one comparison: April is 1.23 inches drier and its sea runs 1.1°F warmer. Price the same room for a March week and an April week before you commit, and take a refundable rate if the two quotes land close. Getting from the airport is a separate step, covered in our airport-transfers guide.

We could not verify the lodging-tax rate for Port Antonio hotels, so we give no percentage. Before you pay a deposit, ask whether the quoted nightly rate includes taxes and service charges.

With 8.6 wet days in an average March, the upgrade that changes the trip is a room with a covered veranda or balcony. A shower then means an hour outside under a roof, with the sea still in view.

Things to do in Port Antonio in March

March afternoons average 80.4°F, 1.7°F under April’s. That margin helps on walking days in town and on a climb inland. Rain comes on 8.6 days, so leave one flexible slot in the itinerary for the day that turns wet.

The Titchfield Peninsula was the first place in the area settled by the English and holds Fort George, along with DeMontevin Lodge, an eclectic Victorian building. The Court House went up in 1895, and Christ Church, the Portland Parish Church, stands on land indentured on September 3, 1836. Folly Point Lighthouse dates from 1888, its masonry tower built fireproof. Inland, the Blue and John Crow Mountains became Jamaica’s first UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015: 26,251.6 hectares (about 64,900 acres), rising from 850 m to 2,256 m (roughly 2,790 to 7,400 feet).

The sea barely moves around March: it holds within 1.5°F, from 81.4°F in February to 82.9°F in April. The air shifts more, from a 79.7°F average high in February to 80.4°F in March and 82.1°F in April, a 2.4°F rise. Walk Fort George and Folly Point in the morning or after 4 p.m., and expect the mountain air to cool as the road climbs above 850 m.

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust publishes no opening hours or admission fees for these sites, and we found none elsewhere, so we cannot confirm which ones cost nothing. We found no Rio Grande raft rate either. The peninsula’s streets are public, and you can see the exteriors of DeMontevin Lodge and the 1895 Court House from them.

Port Antonio in March: a two-day itinerary

Day one stays in town. Start at 7 a.m., under an hour after the 6:12 sunrise, with Fort George and DeMontevin Lodge on the Titchfield Peninsula during the coolest part of the day. Walk to the Court House and Christ Church before late morning. Swim from noon, when the 81.8°F sea runs close to the 80.4°F high, then reach Folly Point Lighthouse around 5 p.m. to catch it before the 6:16 p.m. sunset.

Day two goes inland, to the Blue and John Crow Mountains or to Moore Town. A Colonel governs Moore Town today, an honorary title his ancestors won, and UNESCO inscribed its Maroon heritage on the intangible-heritage list in 2008. Leave by 7 a.m. with a driver or a rental car (see driving in Jamaica). If the morning turns wet, swap in the town sites from day one and move the mountains to the next dry morning.

The last word

Book March if warm water matters more to you than a dry forecast, and keep one day of the trip open for rain. Save a morning for the road west of town too: Orange Bay Railway Station shows Jamaica Georgian features, and Seaman’s Valley holds the ruins of a great house and the first European cemetery in the area.
