Port Antonio in October: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

You’ve already picked Port Antonio, the town on Jamaica’s northeastern shoulder where Fort George sits on the Titchfield Peninsula and the Blue and John Crow Mountains rise behind the harbor. October is the open question, and the month answers with warm water, short days and plenty of rain.

The sea off Port Antonio runs warmer than the afternoon air in October, the sun sets before six, and more than half the days log measurable rain. If each day has an indoor fallback, the month makes a fine vacation. If your trip hangs on one long mountain hike, read the comparison with November before you book.

October suits a warm-water, flexible trip to Port Antonio: book refundable, give every day an indoor fallback, and expect rain on more than half the days.

Flights, transfers and the road east don’t change with the month: our flights from the US guide, the airport transfers guide and getting around Jamaica carry the routes and fares. Plan on at least two nights in town to fit the itinerary below, and start with our Port Antonio guide for everything that isn’t tied to the date.

Port Antonio weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days

October normal Value
Average high 83.8°F (28.8°C)
Average low 76.0°F (24.4°C)
Precipitation 7.19 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 17.8
Days with 1 in or more 0.9
Daylight on October 15 11 h 46 min

Every figure here comes from ERA5, the ECMWF model reanalysis served by Open-Meteo, averaged over 1991 to 2020 for the grid cell at 18.18°N, 76.45°W. That is a model cell, not a thermometer at an airport, and it sits over the wet northeastern end of Jamaica, the island’s rainiest corner. On that basis, an average October afternoon peaks at 83.8°F and the night bottoms out at 76.0°F, with 7.19 inches of rain across the month. Don’t carry those numbers to Montego Bay or Negril on the other side of the island.

In an average October, 17.8 days record at least 0.10 inch of rain, so more than one day in two gets wet. A tenth of an inch can be a single passing shower, and a day on that count can still hold a dry morning and a dry evening. Heavy days are rarer: 0.9 day per October brings an inch or more, roughly one real soaking during the month.

The gap between the average high and low is 7.8°F, small enough that the same clothes work at noon and at midnight. Pack for 84°F afternoons and 76°F nights: breathable shirts, a light rain shell instead of an umbrella, and quick-dry shoes for wet paths. The mountains inland climb to 2,256 meters (about 7,402 feet), and our normals describe the coastal cell only, so add a warmer layer if your trip goes high. Our Jamaica packing list has the rest.

October 15 gets about 11 hours 46 minutes of daylight. Converted to Jamaica time (UTC−5, with no daylight saving), the sun rises at 5:58 a.m. and sets at 5:44 p.m. Dinner happens in the dark, a sunset drink should be in hand by about 5:30, and any drive back from the hills should start well before six.

Port Antonio sea temperature in October: can you swim?

The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea surface off Port Antonio at 87.4°F in October, averaged over 2015 to 2024. That number is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Read it as the top of the day’s range.

Even with that nuance, the water beats the air: 87.4°F against an average afternoon high of 83.8°F. Walking in brings no cold shock, and a swim right after a shower is one of the month’s small pleasures. Water this warm does little to cool you down on a long snorkel, so carry drinking water and wear a rash guard for the sun.

We could not read wind or swell data for October off Port Antonio, so we give no wave height and no count of calm days. October sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and a passing system can change sea conditions within a day. Check the local forecast and any beach flags each morning, and read our Jamaica hurricane season guide before you book.

How busy is Port Antonio in October? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate series for Port Antonio, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. The calendar fact we can give is the hurricane season, and the case for Jamaica’s other months lives in our best time to visit Jamaica guide. For daily budgets by comfort level, use our Jamaica trip cost guide.

We have no booking lead-time data either, so we give no number of weeks. In October the decision that matters is the rate type: choose refundable rooms and changeable flights, because a storm forecast can appear days before departure. For recovery news since the last big storm, check our Hurricane Melissa update before paying a deposit.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate or a per-night guest charge for Port Antonio, so we give no percentage and no dollar figure. Ask your hotel in writing whether taxes are included in the quoted rate.

If one budget line deserves extra money in October, make it the room: a place with a covered veranda or a sheltered lounge gives you somewhere pleasant to sit out a shower on any of the 17.8 wet days. A refundable rate belongs in the same bracket. Our where to stay in Jamaica guide compares the island’s bases.

Things to do in Port Antonio in October

October’s warmth favors the short, low-lying side of Port Antonio: heritage walks in town, a swim whenever a shower passes, and a sea averaging 87.4°F in daily maxima to end each day. The plan most exposed to the month’s 17.8 wet days is a long ridge hike inland.

On the Titchfield Peninsula, the first place in the area the English settled, Fort George stands near DeMontevin Lodge, an eclectic Victorian building. In town, the Court House went up in 1895 on the Colonial Secretary’s direction, and Christ Church, the Portland parish church, stands on land indentured on 3 September 1836. Folly Point Lighthouse dates from 1888, with a masonry tower built to be fireproof. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust describes these monuments but publishes no opening hours or admission fees, and we could not read a Rio Grande raft rate either, so confirm both locally.

Inland, the Blue and John Crow Mountains became Jamaica’s first UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015, a mixed property of 26,251.6 hectares (about 64,870 acres) rising from 850 to 2,256 meters. Moore Town, whose Maroon heritage UNESCO inscribed in 2008, is still led by a Colonel. A fort’s walls stay the same all year, while the mountain approach changes with the weather: our coastal cell counts 17.8 wet days and we hold no normals for the slopes. Give any mountain day a fixed turnaround time, and see our Blue Mountains guide for hiking detail.

We could not verify an admission price for any Port Antonio site, so we can’t promise that anything is free. The Titchfield Peninsula’s streets are public, and a walk past DeMontevin Lodge toward Fort George costs you only time. The same goes for viewing the 1895 Court House from the street.

Port Antonio in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one, in town. 6 a.m.: the light arrives at 5:58 on October 15, so walk the Titchfield Peninsula to Fort George and DeMontevin Lodge before the heat climbs toward the 83.8°F average high. 9 a.m.: breakfast, then the 1895 Court House and Christ Church. Late morning: swim. Early afternoon: a long lunch under cover, a buffer if a shower rolls in. 4 p.m.: Folly Point Lighthouse, back before the 5:44 p.m. sunset, with dinner after dark.

Day two, inland or west. On a clear forecast, leave by 7 a.m. for Moore Town and the edge of the Blue and John Crow Mountains, and aim to be on the coast road by 4 p.m. so the drive ends in daylight. If the forecast turns, head west instead to Orange Bay Railway Station, with its Jamaica Georgian features, and to Seaman’s Valley, where the ruins of a great house stand near the area’s first European cemetery. Hire a driver or read our driving in Jamaica guide before taking mountain roads in the wet.

Port Antonio in October vs September and November

September averages 85.1°F highs and 77.1°F lows, October 83.8°F and 76.0°F, November 81.9°F and 74.6°F, all from the same ERA5 cell and the same 1991 to 2020 period. October is the wettest of the three, at 7.19 inches and 17.8 wet days, against 6.14 inches and 14.5 days in September and 5.43 inches and 13.4 days in November. The sea, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015 to 2024, eases from 87.9°F to 87.4°F to 85.1°F in daily maxima.

Go four weeks earlier and you get afternoons 1.3°F warmer, sea half a degree warmer and 3.3 fewer wet days, with stickier nights at 77.1°F. Go four weeks later and November cuts 4.4 wet days and 1.76 inches of rain, while the sea drops 2.3°F to 85.1°F and afternoons cool to 81.9°F. Our Port Antonio in September and Port Antonio in November pages carry the detail.

Is October a good time to visit Port Antonio?

Yes, for travelers who want warm water and a town-and-heritage trip on a loose schedule: the sea holds 87.4°F in daily maxima, and heavy days are rare at 0.9 per month with an inch or more. No, for anyone whose trip rests on a long mountain hike, a fixed outdoor ceremony (our honeymoon guide weighs the options) or a non-refundable booking.

If the answer is no, pick November: 13.4 wet days instead of 17.8, 5.43 inches of rain instead of 7.19, and a sea still averaging 85.1°F. It also falls inside the hurricane season, so keep the refundable rule.

Of the three months, October puts the widest gap between sea and sky, with the water’s daily maximum sitting 3.6°F above the average afternoon high.

The last word

Book refundable, keep one indoor stop ready for each day, and get in the water whenever the rain lets up. On a gray afternoon, the Maroon story reaches well beyond Moore Town: Charles Town, near Buff Bay, emerged around 1754, and Nanny Town carries the name of Nanny, who led the Maroons in the first Maroon war. Ask your driver to route past Charles Town on the way back west.
