PORTUGAL · SAGRES · OCTOBER
Sagres is the last inhabited corner of the Algarve before the map runs out, and October suits it. Days at the cape average a high of 72.3°F, mornings start at 59.0°F, and the Atlantic off the point is at its warmest of the fall. The village stays walkable from breakfast to a sunset that still lands at 19:00 in mid-month.
The trade is water. October records 2.42 inches of rain against September’s 0.73, spread over 6.7 days with measurable rain instead of 2.5. In exchange the sea reads 66.3°F, a full 2.1°F above September and 1.9°F above November, and the air has come down 4.5°F from the September high. Warm water under cooler air is a specific combination, and these four weeks are where it sits.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SAGRES
October trades 4.5°F of September’s warmth for the warmest sea of the three shoulder months, and asks you to accept 6.7 wet days in return.

The air figures come from IPMA, the Portuguese weather service, and specifically from its station 533 at Sagres, a real thermometer at 22.9 m on the cape, averaged over 1991 to 2020. That matters, because a model grid cell and a station on a headland can disagree by several degrees. Every figure here describes the exposed south-west cape and nothing else: the high ground inland runs colder and much wetter, and the eastern Algarve keeps weather of its own.
Rain arrives 6.7 days in an average October, roughly one day in five, and 1.8 of those days deliver 0.39 inches or more. In practice that is a couple of genuine soakings and four or five days where a shower crosses the cape and clears. One caution on the counts: IPMA measures at 1 mm and 10 mm, not at the 0.10-inch threshold most American tables use, so the numbers are not interchangeable with the ones you saw on a US forecast site.
Between the 72.3°F high and the 59.0°F low sits 13.3°F of daily swing, and on a cape that swing is felt rather than read. Mornings on the clifftop want long sleeves, midday on the sand does not, and the same day can need both within four hours. Pack a fleece and a shell alongside the swimsuit; our Portugal packing guide covers the rest of the bag.
October 15 gives 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight, with the sun up at 07:42 and down at 19:00 in Portuguese time. That is still a long evening by Atlantic standards, and it survives until the European clocks go back at the end of the month, after which the same amount of light simply lands an hour earlier on the dial. Plan the cape for the last hour of it.
Can you swim in Sagres in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Sagres averages 66.3°F in October in the Open-Meteo marine series for 2015 to 2024. Read that number with its definition attached: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would give, and the water you meet at nine in the morning is cooler than the water you meet at five. Other tables published for this coast use other definitions and land elsewhere.
Sixty-six degrees is swimmable, not luxurious. Most adults get in without ceremony, stay twenty minutes and come out pleased with themselves. Children last less. Anyone planning to surf or to spend a session in the water will want a wetsuit rather than bravado, and a towel that has been sitting in the sun. What surprises people is the direction of travel: this is warmer water than September gave, because the cape’s summer upwelling has eased off.
We found no wind or wave series for Sagres, so we publish no speeds and no swell heights, and we would rather say that than guess at a cape known for both. What geography does hand you is choice. Mareta faces south into the bay, while Tonel and Beliche look west into the open Atlantic. If one is unruly, the other is a short drive around the point.
How busy is Sagres in October? Crowds and how far ahead to book
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Sagres, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive, and we quote no nightly figure. What we can date is the weather that drives the visit: 2.42 inches of rain against September’s 0.73, and 6.7 wet days against 2.5. Country-level spending patterns live in our Portugal trip cost guide.
On lead times, take what follows as reasoning rather than measurement, because we verified no booking data for the village. Sagres is a small place at the end of a long road rather than a resort strip, so the useful move is to fix the room and the car together as soon as your dates are firm. Our car rental guide explains why the vehicle is the part that tightens first in the Algarve.
We could not verify a per-night tourist tax for Sagres in October, so we give no rate, no cap and no exemption. Ask the property at check-in rather than assume one way or the other, and read your confirmation before you pay anything at the desk.
One spend genuinely changes the month, and it is the car. With 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight on October 15, the fort, the lighthouse and the village beaches sit far enough apart that a day without wheels becomes a day of waiting. We could not verify bus fares or timetables on the cape road, so we cannot price the alternative; our getting-around guide sets out the national options.
Things to do in Sagres in October

October lets you do both halves of Sagres in one day, and that is the month’s argument. At 72.3°F the clifftop walking is comfortable rather than punishing, while 66.3°F water keeps swimming on the table. September gives warmer air and a colder sea; November gives 66.2°F days and 3.23 inches of rain. The overlap of walkable air and swimmable water is at its widest now.
The village itself holds the Fortaleza de Sagres on its own promontory, with Praia do Tonel below it and Praia da Mareta in the bay. Praia do Beliche sits on the road west, Praia do Martinhal east of the harbor, and Cabo de São Vicente closes the map six kilometers out with its lighthouse. We could not verify ticket prices, opening hours or closing days for the fort and the lighthouse, so confirm them with the sites themselves before you drive out.
What October changes at those places is the contrast between them. The water holds at 66.3°F all month while the air slides down toward November’s 66.2°F high, so a swim stops feeling like relief and starts feeling like a decision. The 1.8 days of heavy rain also matter on the cliff paths above Tonel and Beliche, where wet ground and an unfenced edge are a poor pairing.
Plenty here costs nothing. Walking out to the point at Cabo de São Vicente for the 19:00 sunset is free, as is every stretch of sand in the village, since Portuguese beaches are public. Budget a few coins in case the beach lots charge, and keep the lighthouse sunset for a clear evening rather than one of the 6.7 wet days.
Sagres in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts late by summer standards, because first light comes around 07:40. Breakfast in the village, then the Fortaleza around 10:00 while the air is still near the 59.0°F overnight mark and the promontory is quiet. Swim at Mareta from noon, when the 66.3°F water is closest to its daily maximum and the air is at its 72.3°F best. Keep 18:00 clear and drive to Cabo de São Vicente for a 19:00 sunset.
Day two goes west: Beliche in the morning, Tonel after lunch, the cliff path between them if the ground is dry. Should one of the 6.7 wet days land on you, reverse the logic and drive east, where Lagos puts shelter, lunch and a town within half an hour of the cape. Heavy rain reaches 0.39 inches on only 1.8 days in an average October, so a full washout is the exception.
Sagres in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 76.8°F | 72.3°F | 66.2°F |
| Average low | 62.1°F | 59.0°F | 53.1°F |
| Precipitation | 0.73 in | 2.42 in | 3.23 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 2.5 | 6.7 | 8.4 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 64.2°F | 66.3°F | 64.4°F |
All three months come from the same IPMA station and the same 1991-2020 period, so the comparison is like for like. September runs 4.5°F warmer by day and drier by 1.69 inches. November drops the daytime high to 66.2°F, the night to 53.1°F, and adds 1.7 more wet days than October. The sea contradicts the air: October’s 66.3°F beats both neighbors, by 2.1°F over September and 1.9°F over November.
Shifting four weeks earlier buys near-certain sun and costs you the warmer water plus 3.1°F on the overnight low, which is a real difference at a beachfront window. Shifting four weeks later costs 6.1°F of daytime warmth and adds 0.81 inches of rain, and it buys quiet and low-angle light on the cliffs. Our September page makes the earlier case in full.
Is October a good time to visit Sagres?
Yes, if you came to be in the water and on the cliffs rather than beside a pool. Swimmers, surfers and walkers get the best combination of the fall: 66.3°F sea, 72.3°F air, more than eleven hours of daylight. No, if your trip is a fixed beach week with no flexibility, because 6.7 wet days in 31 means a plan with no indoor fallback will meet trouble at some point.
If that is your trip, move it to September and accept cooler water. The numbers are unambiguous: 0.73 inches of rain, 2.5 wet days, 76.8°F by day. Nothing in October comes close to that reliability, and no amount of optimism converts 2.42 inches into 0.73.
What October alone hands you at this cape is the warmest sea of the three months under air that has already dropped 4.5°F from the summer peak.
The last word
Book October if the swim matters more than the guarantee, book September if it does not, and either way put the rental car in the basket first. One caveat we owe you before you decide: the air figures rest on thirty years of readings from a thermometer at 22.9 m on the cape, while the sea figure rests on ten years, 2015 to 2024, of a model of the water offshore. The first is measured, the second is computed, and only one of them will be standing next to you at Mareta.
