Ponta da Piedade in November: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

By November the most photographed headland in the Algarve goes back to being a walk. The stacks and grottoes are where they were in August, the late light still turns the limestone orange, and the air sits at an average high of 66.2°F. That is climbing weather. The staircase down to the water, and the climb back up it, is a different proposition at 66°F than it is in high summer.

What the month takes back: the sea has slipped to 64.4°F, rain falls on 8.4 days out of thirty, and daylight is down to 10 hours 14 minutes on the 15th. Boats to the grottoes run when the swell lets them, not when your calendar says so. If you want the warmer version of the same cliffs, October is four weeks and 6.1°F away.

November keeps the cliff paths comfortable at 66.2°F and the water swimmable in short bursts at 64.4°F, with rain on about eight days and the sun gone by 5:27 pm.

Go for: the clifftop circuit and the staircase to the grotto landing in cool air, empty viewpoints at sunset, and a base in Lagos that still works as a town.

Think twice before: building the trip around one boat morning. Sea state, not air temperature, decides whether the grotto boats sail from this stretch of coast.

One thing to settle before you pack. Every figure here comes from IPMA’s station 533 at Sagres, a mast 22.9 m above sea level at the windiest point of this coast, about half an hour west of the headland. It is the nearest official record, and it is a coastal one: high ground inland runs colder and a good deal wetter, and the eastern Algarve keeps its own weather. Do not pack for a hill walk on a reading taken beside the Atlantic.

Ponta da Piedade weather in November: average highs, lows and rain days

Days with 0.39 in or more 2.6

Those normals belong to IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, computed over 1991 to 2020: average high 66.2°F, average low 53.1°F, 3.23 inches of rain across the month. It is a thermometer on a mast, read year after year, rather than a reanalysis cell averaged over several miles of cliff and open ocean. The difference matters on a coast where the ocean warms the nights and the land cools them.

Rain reaches 0.04 inch on 8.4 days in an average November, a bit more than one day in four, and 2.6 of those days hit 0.39 inch or more. Call that two or three days in the month when the clifftop path is genuinely off the table and you eat a long lunch instead. IPMA counts with metric thresholds, 1 mm and 10 mm, not the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use, so these counts will not line up against the NOAA page for your home town.

Between the average high and the average low sits 13.1°F, and mornings on the headland start at the bottom of that range with wind coming off the point. A windproof shell, one warm layer and shoes with real grip do more for this month than anything else: the paths are limestone dust, and dust plus 0.39 inch of rain is a slick descent. Our packing guide has the full list for a shoulder-season week.

On November 15 the sun rises at 7:13 am and sets at 5:27 pm local time, Portugal running on UTC through the winter half of the year, for 10 hours 14 minutes of daylight. Plan around the early close: the best light on the stacks arrives some time after four, and dinner in Lagos happens in the dark. Two full days here means two useful days, not two long ones.

Can you swim in Ponta da Piedade in November? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea off the point averages 64.4°F in November, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015 to 2024. Read that number for what it is: a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day stacked up and averaged, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Tables that average the full day will show you something slightly cooler for the same water.

Mid-60s water is swimmable and not comfortable for long. A quick in and out at Praia do Camilo works fine on a sunny afternoon, especially with 66.2°F air waiting on the sand. Anything longer wants a wetsuit, and anyone who shivers easily will treat this as a paddling month. October’s water reads 66.3°F and December’s 63.2°F, so November sits mid-slide rather than at the bottom of it.

We could not verify a monthly wave-height or wind-speed series for this stretch of coast, so we give no swell figures. What the source does flag is the character of the place: the Sagres station stands at the windiest point of the coast, where sea state rather than air temperature decides whether a boat goes out at all. Ask the operator on the morning, not the week before.

How busy is Ponta da Piedade in November? Crowds, prices and booking

November falls well outside the Algarve’s summer season, and the headland shows it: the viewpoints thin out, Lagos goes back to being a working town, and the coast road stops behaving like a parking lot. On what any of that costs, we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Lagos, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. Transatlantic routings run through Lisbon or Faro either way, as our flights guide sets out.

Without occupancy numbers we will not invent a lead time in weeks. The weather does justify a rule on sequencing. Two nights in Lagos covers the headland and one boat morning, three gives the forecast a second chance, and the boat itself is the booking you keep loose: with 8.4 wet days and sailings that hang on the swell, reserve it a day or two out rather than from home in September. Fix the room and the car earlier.

We could not verify whether a municipal tourist tax applies to overnight stays in Lagos in November, nor at what nightly rate, so no percentage appears in our costing. Ask the property at booking and treat the answer as a checkout line item. Broader budget ranges for a Portugal week live in the trip-cost guide.

The one place where spending more genuinely changes November is the rental car. With daylight ending at 5:27 pm and rain on roughly eight days, a car converts a washed-out morning into Sagres or the Lagos market and still gets you back to the clifftop for sunset. Our car guide covers pickup at Faro and the fuel and toll fine print.

Things to do in Ponta da Piedade in November

November hands you the whole headland at walking temperature. At an average high of 66.2°F you can do the clifftop circuit, take the staircase down to the water and climb back out without the heat that rules an Algarve July, and you can do it at midday instead of scheduling around it. Photographers get the other bonus: with sunset at 5:27 pm, the best light lands before dinner rather than late in the evening.

The path runs south from the edge of Lagos to the lighthouse on the point, with the staircase to the water landing partway along and viewpoints over the arches the whole way. Praia do Camilo sits just north of it, Praia Dona Ana a little farther, and the walled old town is within walking distance of all three. The water at the bottom of those steps reads 64.4°F this month. We could not verify November fares or sailing times for the grotto boats, so we quote none: ask at the Lagos marina or at the top of the staircase.

Across October, November and December the sea gives up just 3.1°F, from 66.3 to 63.2. The air gives up 9.7°F over the same three months, 72.3 down to 62.6. That gap is the season in one line: the water you dip into barely shifts, while the walk to it changes completely, and November is the last month when both sides of the equation still cooperate.

Nothing on the headland itself sells a ticket. The clifftop path, the viewpoints over the stacks, the lighthouse approach and the staircase down to the water take no admission, and neither does the sand at Praia do Camilo. The paid part is the boat and the kayak, and in November both depend on a calm morning more than on your wallet.

Ponta da Piedade in November: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Sunrise is at 7:13, so leave Lagos at 8 and walk the coast path south while the air is still in the fifties. Reach the staircase around 10, take it down to the landing, and be back on top before the day warms to 66.2°F. Lunch in the old town at one. Back out to the point by 4:45 for the low light, with the sun down at 5:27, then dinner after dark. Two useful blocks, one long lunch between them.

Day two. Keep the morning for the boat and check the swell first, since sea state decides it here. If it sails, the grottoes are a two-hour window and the sea is 64.4°F if you swim off the landing. If it does not, drive west to Sagres and the cape, or north to Benagil for the clifftop view when the boats are grounded. On one of the 2.6 days that brings 0.39 inch or more, drop the coast altogether and give the day to Lagos itself.

Ponta da Piedade in November vs October and December

Measure October November December
Average high 72.3°F 66.2°F 62.6°F
Average low 59.0°F 53.1°F 49.8°F
Precipitation 2.42 in 3.23 in 2.96 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 6.7 8.4 8.0
Sea surface (daily maxima) 66.3°F 64.4°F 63.2°F

October runs 6.1°F warmer by day, 1.9°F warmer in the water and 1.7 days drier. November is the wettest of the three by total rainfall at 3.23 inches, and that catches people out: December records fewer wet days, 8.0 against 8.4, and less rain overall at 2.96 inches. The steady decline is in the air, not the sky. Between October and December the average high falls 9.7°F while the sea slides only 3.1°F.

Shift back four weeks and you buy swimming weather, warmer evenings on a terrace and a better chance the boats sail, against more company on the staircase. Shift forward four weeks and you keep almost all the water temperature, lose a jacket’s worth of daytime air, and gain a slightly drier month with shorter afternoons. Moving in either direction changes the walk far more than it changes the swim.

Is November a good time to visit Ponta da Piedade?

For walkers, photographers and anyone whose trip is about the cliffs, yes without hesitation: 66.2°F is the temperature you would order for a coast path, and the viewpoints are yours. For a beach holiday it is no. Water at 64.4°F and rain on 8.4 days will not fill a week of sunbathing, and a trip whose single non-negotiable is a grotto boat is a trip built on a forecast.

If that describes you, take October instead. Highs of 72.3°F, water at 66.3°F and 6.7 wet days give you a real swimming month with the same cliffs, and the summer crowds have already gone home. The October page has the figures; the twelve-month verdict puts the whole country in order.

What November alone gives you is the pairing: air cool enough to climb the staircase twice in a day, and water still above 64°F when you get to the bottom of it.

The last word

Decide this one on the walk, not the swim. Between November and December the sea surrenders only 1.2°F, from 64.4 to 63.2, while the air drops 3.6°F, so waiting a month costs you the comfortable cliff day and saves you almost nothing in the water. Book the room, keep the boat morning loose until the swell settles, and walk the point between 8 and 10 while the light comes in from the east. The sun is down at 5:27, so make the second plan dinner.
