Albufeira in August: Weather, Sea Temperature and Crowds

Come in August and the Algarve hands you its longest, loudest days: sunset at 8:24 p.m., an ocean that has spent the whole summer warming, and a rain column that rounds to almost nothing. The old town’s white lanes run down to the sand, the boat operators work the cliffs from dawn, and nobody is hurrying dinner.

The trade is obvious before you land. This is the month Western Europe takes its vacation all at once, so the beds, the flights and the rental cars all get harder to find. The question worth answering is what the date actually buys you in degrees, hours of light and water temperature, and whether four weeks either side would buy more.

August gives you the hottest air, the warmest water of the three summer months we measured and rain that barely registers, in exchange for the busiest, most expensive weeks of the European holiday calendar.

Go for: beach days that hold from breakfast to 8 p.m., the warmest water of the summer, and a month where almost no outdoor plan needs a backup.

Think twice before: booking late, or expecting Caribbean-warm water: 66.8°F is Atlantic, and the first thirty seconds tell you so.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and specifically from station 554 at Faro: a real thermometer 5.0 meters above sea level, not a reanalysis grid cell. On the 1991-2020 normals, August averages a high of 84.6°F, a low of 67.8°F and 0.12 inches of rain for the entire month. One caveat rides along with those numbers. Faro sits at the eastern end of the Algarve while Albufeira is central, and the station describes a coastal strip rather than the whole region: high ground inland runs colder and far wetter, so don’t pack for a hill walk on a beach reading.

Rain days are counted here at European thresholds, and the bar matters. IPMA logs 0.2 days in an average August with 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, which is a lower bar than the 0.10-inch threshold most US tables use, so the two counts are not interchangeable. Translated into a vacation, that is roughly one showery day every five Augusts, and a monthly total of 0.12 inches that would not fill a coffee cup left on a balcony. A folded poncho in the day bag covers the exception.

Between the 84.6°F afternoon and the 67.8°F small hours sits a spread of 16.8 degrees, and most of it arrives once the sun is off the water. Sea breeze plus a tiled terrace at 10 p.m. is the moment people wish they had one long-sleeve layer in the bag. Otherwise August packing is short: a hat you can lose without grief, sandals that survive hot sand, and reef-safe sunscreen, with the full list in our Portugal packing guide.

Light is the month’s quiet luxury. On August 15 the sun rises at 6:47 a.m. and sets at 8:24 p.m. local time (05:47 and 19:24 UTC, with Portugal on summer time), giving 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight. That means a beach that is genuinely empty at 7:30 a.m., a long shaded gap in the middle, and dinner that still starts in daylight.

Can you swim in Albufeira in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Albufeira averages 66.8°F in August, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. Read the fine print with the figure: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, so it runs a shade above a true 24-hour average. An 8 a.m. swim will be a touch cooler than that number suggests, and a 5 p.m. one a touch warmer.

In practice, 66.8°F is swimmable and Atlantic. The gap between the 84.6°F air and the water is 17.8 degrees, so entry is a short, bracing negotiation and the reward is that you stop overheating for an hour. Children tend to get in faster than adults and stay in longer, though a rash vest earns its place after the third session of the day. Anyone used to Florida or Caribbean water should expect a real difference, not a rumor of one.

We could not verify an August wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so no figures for swell or breeze appear here. What the marine reading covers is surface temperature and nothing else: it says nothing about currents, shore break or the afternoon onshore wind that can turn a flat morning cove choppy. Read the lifeguard flags at the staffed beaches and treat the unstaffed coves west of town as a judgement call.

How busy is Albufeira in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

August is when school holidays across Western Europe overlap, and the Algarve absorbs the whole of that at once. Beyond that calendar fact, we have to be straight with you: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Albufeira, so we crown no month the year’s most expensive and put no percentage on a summer premium. What the record does support is demand logic. A month with 0.12 inches of rain and 84.6°F afternoons sells itself without help.

Our advice on lead time is editorial rather than measured, and worth following anyway: treat August lodging as a winter task. Transatlantic seats into Faro, or into Lisbon with the drive south, tighten early for these dates, and so do the family-size cars and anything with an automatic gearbox. Flights from the US sets out the routings, and our car guide covers the tolls and the insurance line that catches people out.

On the municipal tourist tax, we could not verify either the nightly amount or the months it applies to, so we give no figure. Ask the property to state it at booking, since it is typically collected at the hotel rather than folded into the online rate. Broader budgeting for a week on the coast sits in what a Portugal trip costs.

If one line of the budget is worth stretching in August, make it the room. Air conditioning turns the 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. block from dead time into a nap, and a bed within walking distance of the sand means the 8:24 p.m. sunset and the late dinner that follows happen on foot, with the car left where it was parked in the morning.

Things to do in Albufeira in August

The month’s gift is stackable days. With 13 hours 37 minutes of light on August 15 and rain measured at 0.12 inches for the whole month, you can run a dawn beach, a long indoor middle and a second beach at six without ever consulting a forecast. September cannot promise that: it averages 79.5°F and 0.85 inches, with 1.9 days at 1 mm or more, which is enough to reroute an afternoon.

Names worth putting in the plan: Praia dos Pescadores under the old town, reachable on foot and lit late; Praia da Falésia and its ochre cliff wall running east toward Olhos de Água; the small ones west, São Rafael and Coelha, cut into the sandstone. Boats leave the marina for the sea caves along the coast, with Benagil the headline stop. We could not verify 2026 fares or departure times for any operator, so none are quoted here, and the cliff walks around Carvoeiro and Lagos make the same coast free on foot.

August changes the air at these places more than the water. The sea sits at 66.8°F in both July and August, identical to the decimal, while the difference between a coastal walk in August and the same walk in September is 5.1 degrees of afternoon heat. On exposed clifftop paths with almost no cloud, that gap decides whether midday is pleasant or punishing, so those walks move to the first two hours after 6:47 a.m. sunrise.

The free part of August is the big part. Portugal’s beaches are public, the clifftop paths cost nothing, and the 8:24 p.m. sunset from a sandstone headland is the best-value hour of the day. Sunbeds and parasols are rented privately and we could not verify this season’s rates, so budget for them separately or bring your own shade. Families can take the same logic further with our Portugal with kids guide.

Albufeira in August: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Be on the sand by 7:30 a.m., an hour after the 6:47 sunrise, when the beach is cool and the 66.8°F water is at its least forgiving and most empty. Breakfast at nine, market and old-town lanes until eleven, then swim again before the 84.6°F peak. Take the middle of the day indoors: lunch long, sleep an hour, read. Back to the water at six, dinner at eight with the light still on the cliffs, and the walk home in shirtsleeves at 67.8°F.

Day two. Book the earliest cave boat of the morning, when the sea is flattest and the low sun reaches into the openings, then drive west for a late lunch and an afternoon in Lagos. If wind cancels the boats, and that is the likelier disruption in a month with 0.2 rain days, turn the day inland or east instead: Faro’s old town and the salt lagoons, or Tavira for a slower riverside afternoon. Both work with a rental car and neither depends on the sea state.

Albufeira in August vs July and September

Measure July August September
Average high 84.9°F 84.6°F 79.5°F
Average low 67.3°F 67.8°F 64.9°F
Rainfall, whole month 0.04 in 0.12 in 0.85 in
Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more 0.2 0.2 1.9
Sea surface, daily maxima 66.8°F 66.8°F 65.4°F

On the IPMA normals, July and August are near twins: July runs 0.3 degrees hotter by day, August 0.5 degrees warmer at night, and both record 0.2 days with 1 mm of rain or more. The marine record, from a different source and period, gives both months the same 66.8°F water. September is the month that moves. It sheds 5.1 degrees of daytime heat against August, drops to 65.4°F at sea, and takes rainfall from 0.12 inches to 0.85 with 1.9 rain days instead of 0.2.

Shift four weeks later and you trade heat and certainty for space: 79.5°F afternoons are far kinder on a cliff path, water only 1.4 degrees cooler, and the European school calendar has closed. Shift four weeks earlier and you get the same beach at the same water temperature with marginally less rain. Both cases are laid out in Albufeira in July and Albufeira in September.

Is August a good time to visit Albufeira?

Yes, if your trip is a beach trip and your dates are fixed by school. Nothing in the record argues against it: 84.6°F, 0.12 inches of rain and 13 and a half hours of light is as close to a guarantee as a coast gets. No, if you plan to walk the cliffs at midday, if you want a restaurant table without a reservation, or if you booked late and are shopping for value.

For travelers who can move, September is the better version of the same vacation. You lose 5.1 degrees of afternoon heat, which most people experience as a gain, and 1.4 degrees of sea warmth, which is barely detectable on entry. You pay for it with 1.9 rain days and 0.85 inches, so one afternoon in a week may need a plan B. The holiday crush is over by then.

Of the three months we measured, August alone pairs the warmest water on the record, 66.8°F, with a sunset at 8:24 p.m. and rain you can plan around.

The last word

Book the August room before the winter is out, take one with air conditioning, and give the middle of each day back to the shade rather than fighting an 84.6°F afternoon that will win. One number we have kept in reserve tells you how much slack the month has: IPMA records 0.1 days per August with 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, which is a genuine soaking roughly one August in ten. Pack for the other nine.
