Évora in November: Weather, Rain Days and a Two-Day Plan Inside the Walls

November cools Évora down and takes almost nothing else away. The whitewashed center inside its 17th-century wall was built to be crossed on foot, and an average afternoon high of 63.7°F is walking temperature from the Roman temple to the Cathedral with no hunt for shade in between. The stones of a UNESCO city do not have a season.

What the month does subtract is light and dry ground. On November 15 the sun is up for 10 hours 07 minutes, setting at 5:19 pm local, and an average November logs rain on 8.8 days. Four weeks earlier those same afternoons averaged 75.4°F. That gap is the whole decision.

November gives Évora’s walled center mild 63.7°F afternoons and quiet lanes, at the price of 46.2°F nights and rain on roughly nine days in thirty.

Go for: the UNESCO center at walking temperature, the Temple of Diana with room to stand back from it, and unhurried indoor hours in churches, convents and patrician courtyards.

Think twice before: planning any swimming around this trip. Évora sits inland in the Alentejo, and we hold no water-temperature figure for the city.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese sea and atmosphere institute, and from its 1991-2020 normals for station 558 at Évora, altitude 247.6 m (812 ft). That is a real thermometer standing in the city, not a model grid cell averaged over a landscape. One caveat travels with it: the normals describe inland Évora and not the whole Alentejo. High ground runs colder and far wetter, and a coast keeps its own weather.

Rain falls on 8.8 days in an average November, so about three days in ten register something and seven register nothing. Of those, 3.1 days bring 0.39 inch or more, the kind of afternoon that sends you into a convent for an hour. IPMA counts anything from 0.04 inch up, a lower bar than the 0.10-inch threshold most US tables use, so the two counts are not interchangeable.

Between the 46.2°F night and the 63.7°F afternoon sits a swing of 17.5°F on an average day. Pack for both ends rather than for the middle: a real jacket for 8 am and again after dark, a shirt for the two hours either side of lunch, and shoes that tolerate wet granite cobbles. Our packing guide handles the rest of the suitcase.

Light is the tighter constraint. On November 15 the sun clears the horizon at 7:12 am and drops at 5:19 pm, Portugal being on UTC through the month, for 10 hours 07 minutes in hand. Monuments close inside that window, dinner happens well after dark, and the low sun on white walls arrives around mid-afternoon rather than at 8 pm as it does in July.

How warm is Évora in November?

The month averages a high of 63.7°F and a low of 46.2°F, a 17.5°F spread from the coldest hour to the warmest. Set against the neighbors, that is 11.7°F below October’s 75.4°F afternoons and 5.4°F above December’s 58.3°F. November is the last month here that still feels like the tail of fall rather than the front of winter.

In practice you leave the hotel in a jacket and you carry it by one o’clock. Mid-sixties with sun on limestone is comfortable walking weather, and the narrow streets of the medieval plan hold shade that you no longer want. Once the sun goes at 5:19 pm the jacket goes back on within minutes, because the drop toward that 46.2°F low starts immediately.

We found no frost-day count in the IPMA normals we read, so we give no number for freezing nights. A monthly mean of 46.2°F sits well above freezing, though a single cold night is not described by a monthly average. And there is no water reading to give: Évora is inland, so swimming questions belong to the Algarve, several hours south.

How busy is Évora in November? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Évora, so we crown no month the cheapest of the year. What the calendar does say holds up on its own: November carries neither the summer heat nor the Christmas weeks, and it follows an October that still averaged 75.4°F. A walled city of that size absorbs a mid-November Tuesday without noticing.

That changes how far ahead you book. For a Friday or Saturday night inside the walls, two to three weeks (est.) is a sensible lead, and a midweek stay often needs less. Sequence the trip the other way round from summer: fix the nights first, then the flight, since transatlantic fares move more than an Alentejo room does. Where to stay and what a week costs carry the rest.

On the lodging tax, we could not verify whether Évora levies one, nor at what rate, so no percentage appears anywhere in our numbers. Treat it as a line to ask about at check-in rather than a figure to budget. Our sources for this month are a weather service and a heritage file, and neither of them collects municipal tax.

One upgrade genuinely changes November, and it is the address. A bed inside the 17th-century wall means the 5:19 pm sunset finds you a few hundred steps from dinner instead of outside the ring road in the rain. The other useful spend is wheels for the Alentejo beyond the gates, priced and explained in our car guide.

Things to do in Évora in November

November lets you do the whole monument circuit on foot in a single afternoon, which a 75.4°F October afternoon makes less inviting and a July one makes foolish. The city has been inhabited since the 2nd century BC, and the walk from Roman stone to Jesuit lecture halls covers roughly two thousand years inside a ring you can cross in twenty minutes at 63.7°F.

Name the stops and the circuit writes itself: the Temple of Diana ruins and the stretches of Roman wall reworked in the Visigothic period, the fortified gate and Kasbah remains left when Moorish rule ended in 1165, the Cathedral finished in the 13th century, then the golden-age churches, São Francisco, the Convent of St Claire, and Os Loios with São João Evangelista. We hold no opening hour and no admission price for any of them, so confirm times with each site before you set out.

Interiors do not change with the calendar; the air outside them does. In November you move between monuments in mid-sixties sun rather than mid-seventies, and on 3.1 days a month the rain is heavy enough to make the indoor half of the list the plan rather than the fallback. The 17th-century Vauban-style wall, drawn by the French engineer Nicolas de Langres, keeps the whole circuit compact when the weather turns.

Free costs nothing to enjoy in any month, and November hands you more of it than the guidebook circuit suggests: the streets themselves, the low whitewashed houses with their Dutch tiles and wrought-iron balconies, and the 16th-century façades of the Cordovil house and the house of Garcia de Resende. The walls have been protected under national law since 1920. We could not verify any free-admission day or first-Sunday rule for the ticketed sites.

Évora in November: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Coffee near 7:30, with sunrise at 7:12 and the cold end of the 17.5°F daily swing still on the stones. Reach the Temple of Diana by 9, the Cathedral before 11, lunch at 1 when the thermometer is closest to 63.7°F, then São Francisco through the early afternoon. Walk the Vauban wall from 4 and take the sunset at 5:19 pm from the ramparts. Dinner happens after dark, always.

Day two takes the university quarter, where the Jesuits taught from 1553 and made Évora Portugal’s second city, then Os Loios and São João Evangelista, then the Cordovil and Garcia de Resende façades on the way back. If the sky turns, and three days in ten it will, reverse the order: churches and convents in the morning, the open squares once the shower passes, and treat 3 pm as the last hour with dependable light for photographs.

Évora in November vs October and December

1991-2020 normals, IPMA station 558 October November December
Average high 75.4°F 63.7°F 58.3°F
Average low 54.1°F 46.2°F 41.5°F
Precipitation 3.21 in 3.39 in 3.35 in
Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more 7.7 8.8 8.7

Temperature does the separating, rainfall barely moves. Afternoons fall 11.7°F from October to November and another 5.4°F into December, and nights slide from 54.1°F to 46.2°F to 41.5°F. Monthly totals sit within a fifth of an inch of each other across all three, at 3.21, 3.39 and 3.35 inches, while wet days climb from 7.7 to 8.8 and hold at 8.7. No water temperature enters any of this: the comparison is air, because Évora has no coast.

Shift four weeks earlier and you buy back 11.7°F of afternoon and one drier day, at the cost of sharing the lanes with the tail of the warm season. Shift four weeks later and you keep nearly the same rain but hand over 5.4°F by day and 4.7°F at night, with December’s shorter afternoons on top. October in Évora and December in Évora each make their own case.

Is November a good time to visit Évora?

For anyone here to walk a heritage city, yes, and plainly so: 63.7°F afternoons, quiet streets and seven dry days in ten are good terms for a place whose pleasures are architectural. For travelers who want long evenings outdoors, poolside hours or a beach within reach of dinner, no. Sunset at 5:19 pm ends the outdoor day before most Americans have thought about eating.

If that second description fits you, move to October. Afternoons average 75.4°F, nights hold at 54.1°F, and wet days drop to 7.7 from 8.8, so terrace hours come back without the July furnace. Going the other way costs more than it returns for most visitors: December brings 58.3°F days and 41.5°F nights for essentially the same 3.35 inches of rain.

No other month puts October’s heat behind you and December’s 41.5°F nights still ahead while the monuments keep ordinary hours and the lanes stay this empty.

The last word

Book a room inside the wall, be at the Temple of Diana by 9 and accept that your day ends at 5:19 pm. One fact worth carrying up those streets: Évora came through the 1755 earthquake mainly undamaged while Lisbon fell, and UNESCO, which listed the center in 1986 under criteria (ii) and (iv), calls it the finest example of a city of Portugal’s golden age after that destruction. You are walking the thing that survived.
