Faro in October: Weather, Sea Temperature and How It Compares to September

Faro is the Algarve’s front door, the airport most American trips touch before the coast begins, and in October it stops being a transit lounge. IPMA’s 1991-2020 normals for the city give an average high of 73.9°F, an average low of 60.4°F, and a sea that reaches 67.3°F, warmer than it was in September. The walled town is walkable at noon again, and the ferries out to the lagoon islands leave into air in the low seventies.

What the month takes back is certainty. Rain of 0.04 inch or more falls on 6.0 days in an average October against 1.9 in September, the monthly total climbs from 0.85 inch to 2.20, and daylight is down to 11 hours 18 minutes by the 15th, with the sun gone by 6:56 p.m. Whether that trade suits you depends on one thing: whether your plan can move a day.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA station 554, on the coast at Faro, 5 meters above the sea, over 1991-2020. The eastern Algarve coast is not the whole region. High ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and the western end of the coast keeps its own weather, so nobody should pack for a hill walk on a coastal reading. The sea number comes from a different source, named in its own section below.

IPMA, Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute, puts the October average high at 73.9°F (23.3°C) and the average low at 60.4°F (15.8°C) at its Faro station, with 2.20 inches of precipitation over the month. Those come off a real instrument at a coastal station 5 meters up, not a model grid cell averaged over a square of map, which matters on the overnight figure, where stations and reanalyses routinely part company by a couple of degrees.

Rain of at least 0.04 inch (1 mm) falls on 6.0 days in an average October, and 0.39 inch (10 mm) or more on 2.0 of them. Those are IPMA’s thresholds, not the 0.10-inch line American tables use, so the two counts do not swap. Read as odds, that is roughly one day in five with something in the gauge, and two heavy days carrying most of the total. For a week in Faro it means one or two mornings rearranged, rarely a beach day lost outright.

Between 73.9°F at the top of the afternoon and 60.4°F before dawn sits a 13.5°F spread, wide enough that one outfit cannot cover both ends of the day. Shorts and a shirt for the middle hours, a genuine layer for the marina after dark, shoes that cope with wet cobbles. Our Portugal packing guide runs the full kit; the October addition is a light rain shell you will use twice and be glad of.

October 15 brings 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight. Sunrise falls at 06:38 UTC and sunset at 17:56 UTC, which converts to 7:38 a.m. and 6:56 p.m. in Faro, putting the late afternoon on the sandbar in good light and dinner firmly after dark. We did not verify the exact date Portugal’s clocks change, so treat the final week of the month as an hour earlier in the evening and check your phone the morning you land.

Can you swim in Faro in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off Faro averages 67.3°F (19.6°C) in October in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. Read the small print before you pack a swimsuit on it: that is the mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. It is also the warmest of the three shoulder months, ahead of September’s 65.4°F and November’s 65.3°F, because the ocean warms and cools weeks behind the air above it.

At 67.3°F you swim rather than wade. The first minute is sharp, then the water is workable for a proper swim, and children tend to come out before adults do. Since the figure is a daily maximum, an eight o’clock swim off Praia de Faro starts below it and an early-afternoon one lands at or near it, which is the whole argument for a late lunch. Most surfers are in a shorty by now.

We found no monthly wind or wave series for the Faro coast, so we give no swell or wind figures at all. The geography still helps: the ocean beaches sit on an exposed sandbar, while the Ria Formosa channels behind it stay flat in almost anything. On a choppy day the lagoon side is the swim, and the local marine forecast is worth a look the night before, since a sandbar break changes character faster than a bay.

How busy is Faro in October? Crowds, prices and booking ahead

October sits on the downslope of the Algarve’s season, and that is a weather fact rather than a price one. We found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for Faro, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What can be dated is the turn itself: 2.20 inches of rain against September’s 0.85, and 6.0 wet days against 1.9. Demand tracks sun, and the airport’s flight board thins with it, but we read no passenger counts, so we attach no percentage.

That pushes the booking rule toward flexibility instead of certainty. A refundable room and a car booked on a free-cancellation rate cost nothing to change when the forecast moves your beach day to Tuesday. Our Portugal trip cost guide handles the budget in full and the transatlantic flight picture the routing. On a short trip, leave one of your nights’ worth of daytime unassigned and spend it wherever the sky is clearest.

We could not verify a municipal tourist tax for Faro, so no per-night rate appears anywhere in our figures. Where such a charge applies in Portugal it is usually collected at the property rather than folded into the online total, meaning the sum you prepay may not be the sum you pay. Ask the hotel directly at the time you book, and keep small notes on hand for check-in.

The one line where spending more genuinely changes the month is mobility. A rental car converts two rained-on days into Loulé’s market hall, the hill villages behind the coast and lunch in Tavira, while a carless trip spends them inside walking distance of the room. Our car guide covers tolls and insurance, and getting around Portugal lays out the train line east if you would rather not drive.

Things to do in Faro in October: the Ria Formosa islands and the walled old town

October allows what July does not: a full day on your feet in the walled town with no need to hide from the heat. At a 73.9°F daytime average, the climb up the cathedral tower and the long walk out past the marina are ordinary activities rather than feats of endurance, and the sea is still swimmable at 67.3°F. Very few European city breaks hold both of those at once this late in the year.

Ferries leave from the Portas do Mar quay, below the old town wall, out across the Ria Formosa to Ilha Deserta, Ilha do Farol and Ilha da Culatra, sandbar islands with ocean on one flank and lagoon on the other. Inside the walls sit the Sé, the Museu Municipal in its convent cloister, and the bone chapel at the Igreja do Carmo. Praia de Faro lies on the sandbar off the airport road. We could not verify October timetables, fares or museum hours, so we quote none.

What October really changes is the gap between air and water. September pairs a 79.5°F air average with a 65.4°F sea, 14.1°F apart, and the Atlantic feels cold on the way out. October pairs 73.9°F with 67.3°F, a gap of 6.6°F, so the water reads mild instead of bracing and the exit costs you far less. Pack the towel anyway: after sunset at 6:56 p.m. the air heads for its 60.4°F overnight average quickly.

We could not verify any free-admission day at Faro’s museums in October, so we name none. Costing nothing regardless: the gates and lanes of the Cidade Velha, the promenade along the marina, the storks on the old rooftops, and the full length of the sandbar walk at Praia de Faro, which is at its best in the hour before that 6:56 p.m. sunset.

Faro in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light: sunrise at 7:38 a.m., sunset at 6:56 p.m. Coffee near the Arco da Vila by nine, the walled town and the Sé before eleven while the air is still short of its 73.9°F peak, then a midday ferry out to Ilha Deserta or Farol. Swim in the early afternoon, when the water is nearest that 67.3°F daily maximum rather than under it. Back on the mainland around five, marina for the last hour of light.

Day two goes east by train or car to Tavira for the morning, with a late lunch back in Faro. If the sky turns, and it does on six days out of thirty-one, swap the island for the Museu Municipal and the bone chapel, both indoors and both inside the walls, and keep the evening loose. A day at 0.39 inch or more arrives twice in an average October and rarely occupies the whole of it.

Faro in October vs September and November

Normal (IPMA 1991-2020) September October November
Average high 79.5°F 73.9°F 67.3°F
Average low 64.9°F 60.4°F 53.4°F
Precipitation 0.85 in 2.20 in 2.97 in
Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more 1.9 6.0 6.6
Sea surface (2015-2024) 65.4°F 67.3°F 65.3°F

October’s 73.9°F high sits 5.6°F below September and 6.6°F above November. The rain column moves much faster than the temperature one: 0.85 inch, then 2.20, then 2.97, with wet days running 1.9, 6.0, 6.6. The sea travels in the opposite direction and peaks in the middle of the trio at 67.3°F, against 65.4°F in September and 65.3°F in November, since the water is still returning summer heat when the air has stopped.

Move four weeks earlier and you buy near-certain sun, 1.9 wet days, and pay for it with 1.9°F less sea warmth and that 14.1°F gap between air and water. Move four weeks later and November gives you 53.4°F nights, 6.6 wet days and 2.97 inches, with a sea barely changed at 65.3°F. Only October keeps a swimmable Atlantic and daytime air in the seventies in the same week.

Is October a good time to visit Faro?

Yes, if the trip is built on walking, eating and a sea you intend to get into. Faro in October delivers 73.9°F days, a 67.3°F sea and six wet days out of thirty-one, which suits a city-and-lagoon week, a long weekend off a European hub, or the final stop of a drive down from Lisbon. No, if you have booked a fixed sunbathing week and cannot shuffle it: three times September’s wet-day count is a genuine threat to a rigid plan.

When that risk is the deal-breaker, take September instead, at 79.5°F by day, 0.85 inch of rain and 1.9 wet days, accepting a 65.4°F sea and a busier coast in return. Our best time to visit Portugal page sets out the whole calendar; the coast’s own case sits in the Algarve guide.

No other month in the trio hands you the warmest water of the three, 67.3°F, under air that has already dropped to 73.9°F. An October swim comes out of the Atlantic warmer than a September one for that reason alone.

The last word

Book the room refundable, hold one daytime of the trip unassigned, and October behaves. The arithmetic underneath: 2.20 inches spread across 6.0 wet days averages about 0.37 inch apiece, the sort of rain that reroutes a morning rather than a week, and two of those days carry the bulk of it. The station that produced all these numbers stands 5 meters above the sea at Faro, which is roughly where you will be standing. Check the ferry board at Portas do Mar the evening before your island day, then go on the clearest morning you get.
