ALBUFEIRA · JUNE · 37.1° N
The June question in Albufeira is not whether the weather holds. It is whether the water has caught up with the air. The Algarve’s official June normals put the average high at 80.2°F and the average low at 64.0°F, with 0.20 inches of rain for the entire month. The sea off the town averages 66.9°F. That gap of 13.3°F between the air on the sand and the water two steps away is the whole character of an Algarve June.
For a trip, the month buys three things: 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight on the 15th, a rain risk close to zero, and a coast that has not yet gone fully into its July and August rhythm. It also asks you to book like a summer traveler. The Algarve overview handles the region; the date is what gets sorted below.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ALBUFEIRA IN JUNE
June gives you July’s sea at June’s air temperature: 80.2°F afternoons, 0.8 wet days, and water at 66.9°F that will be no warmer next month.
LONGEST DAYS OF THE YEAR · 0.20 INCHES OF RAIN · SEA AT 66.9°F · BOOK LIKE SUMMER
Go for: long evenings with light until 8:54 pm, an all but dry month at 0.20 inches, and day trips west to Benagil and Lagos before the August traffic.
Think twice before: planning the week around swimming alone. At 66.9°F this is real Atlantic water, and anyone whose reference is the Gulf of Mexico will cut the session short.

Faro is the airport for all of this, and most American itineraries connect through Lisbon before the hop or the drive south (the flights guide has the routings). June’s practical bonus starts on arrival day: with the sun up until 8:54 pm, an afternoon landing still leaves a beach evening.
Albufeira weather in June: average highs, lows and rain days
| June normals (1991-2020) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 80.2°F |
| Average low | 64.0°F |
| Precipitation, monthly total | 0.20 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 0.8 |
| Days with 10 mm (0.39 in) or more | 0.2 |
| Daylight on June 15 | 14h 45m |
Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese weather service, and from one instrument: station 554 at Faro, a thermometer 5 meters above sea level, on the 1991-2020 normals. That station sits at the eastern end of the Algarve while Albufeira is central, so read these as coastal Algarve values rather than a reading taken on the town’s own sand. Inland and on high ground the same month is colder and considerably wetter. On the coast, June averages a high of 80.2°F and a low of 64.0°F, with 0.20 inches of rain across the whole month.
Those 0.20 inches arrive quickly and leave. An average June records 0.8 days with 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, which works out to one damp day in a typical month and none at all in plenty of years. A genuine soaking, meaning a day at 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, turns up 0.2 times per June, or roughly one June in five. One caution on the arithmetic: IPMA counts a wet day from 1 mm, while American tables usually start at 0.10 inch, so the two counts do not transfer.
Between the 80.2°F afternoon and the 64.0°F night sits a 16.2°F spread, and that is the number that packs the bag. Daytime needs sunscreen and shade after one o’clock, nothing more. Dinner outdoors at nine, with a breeze off an Atlantic sitting in the sixties, needs a long-sleeved layer per person, plus a second one if the table is on a cliff terrace. Our Portugal packing guide carries the full list.
June 15 brings 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight, the longest stretch of the year on this coast. Sunset lands at 8:54 pm local time, which holds the light through a late swim and into the first course. Restaurants in the old town run on that clock. Work the day backward from it and a beach hour at seven in the evening is still a beach hour, with the parking lots emptying instead of filling.
Can you swim in Albufeira in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Albufeira averages 66.9°F in June on the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. Read that number carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it describes the water at its warmest point of the day and sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. The eight o’clock swim is cooler than 66.9°F.
In practice, 66.9°F is 13.3°F below the air’s average high, and that arithmetic is what catches out anyone who learned to swim in the Gulf of Mexico. Expect the first thirty seconds to sting, then twenty minutes of decent swimming, then the sun to do the rest of the work. Kids tend to outlast their parents by a wide margin. For distance swimming, a shorty wetsuit is standard equipment here rather than an eccentricity.
Wind and swell are where our sources run out. We found no June wind speed or wave height series for this coast, so we quote none, and any line about a reliable afternoon breeze would be ours rather than a measurement. Check the marine forecast on the morning of a boat day and ask the operator directly, because cave trips west of the marina depend entirely on the sea state that day.
How busy is Albufeira in June? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no month-by-month room-rate series for Albufeira, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. What the calendar does give is position: June is the last full month before July and August, and the Algarve’s summer economy is built around those two. The end of June behaves far more like high season than the first week does. Budget tiers we can support with data live in the Portugal trip-cost guide.
Book a June week as a summer week. Rooms in the old town and along the beach strip move in the same window as July, and a rental car for a mid-June pickup is worth reserving eight to ten weeks ahead (est.), which is our working rule and not a measured figure. Reserve the car and the bed in the same sitting, since the two decisions constrain each other. Where to sleep, town by town, is handled in our Portugal lodging guide.
Several Portuguese municipalities charge an overnight tourist tax collected at the hotel. We could not verify whether Albufeira applies one, or at what rate, so no amount per night appears above. Ask when you reserve, and expect it as a separate line at checkout rather than inside the nightly rate you compared online.
The single upgrade that changes this month is the car. Albufeira in June without one is a beach, a marina and the walk up to the old town, all perfectly good. With one, the same 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight stretches to Lagos, Carvoeiro and Tavira and still returns you for an 8:54 pm sunset. Tolls and insurance are covered in our car guide. We could not verify June rental rates, so we quote none.
Things to do in Albufeira in June

What June hands over that no other month does is a combination: a sea that has already reached its summer value at 66.9°F, and air that has not, at 80.2°F. Beach days run comfortable rather than defensive. Nothing has to start at dawn to beat the heat, and nothing has to wait until eight in the evening to be bearable.
Praia da Falésia runs east of town under the red cliffs that name it, wide and long enough for a serious walk. Olhos de Água sits at its western end, named for the fresh water that seeps up through the sand at low tide. In town, Praia dos Pescadores is the working beach below the old quarter, and the marina is the departure point for cave trips heading west toward Benagil and on to Ponta da Piedade.
At those beaches the water is the part that barely moves from here. June’s 66.9°F and July’s 66.8°F are the same swim inside the noise of a ten-year average. The air is what changes: 80.2°F now against 84.9°F in July, so the cliff path above Falésia at two in the afternoon is a different proposition in each month. In June that walk is still comfortable in early afternoon.
Plenty of June runs on daylight rather than on tickets. The beaches and the cliff-top paths carry no admission, the boardwalks strung between coves cost nothing, and with sunset at 8:54 pm an evening walk needs neither a plan nor a reservation. Parking is the one place charges appear at the beach, and Albufeira’s rates were not something we could verify, so read the machine before you leave the car.
Albufeira in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one stays in town. On the sand at Praia dos Pescadores by 8, while the air is nowhere near its 80.2°F. Swim before 11, then the old town for lunch and shade from one until four, the hours when the June sun does its worst. Back to the water at six, since the sea peaks in the afternoon and the evening swim is the warmest of the day. Dinner at eight, with the sun still up until 8:54 pm.
Day two goes west by car, with Carvoeiro and Lagos as anchors and a cave boat trip booked ahead for the morning. If the forecast turns, and a June rain day is uncommon at 0.8 wet days and 0.20 inches for the month, drive east instead: Faro gives you a walled old town, a covered market and a cathedral tower to fill the wet hour, and the train runs the same line if nobody wants to drive.
Albufeira in June vs May and July
| Measure | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 74.3°F | 80.2°F | 84.9°F |
| Average low | 59.0°F | 64.0°F | 67.3°F |
| Precipitation | 1.03 in | 0.20 in | 0.04 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 3.8 | 0.8 | 0.2 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 63.4°F | 66.9°F | 66.8°F |
Read across and June sits closer to July than to May. Days run 5.9°F warmer than May and 4.7°F cooler than July. Rain collapses hardest in the May-to-June step, from 1.03 inches over 3.8 wet days down to 0.20 inches over 0.8. The sea gains 3.5°F on May’s 63.4°F and then flattens: July’s 66.8°F is a tenth of a degree lower on the same 2015-2024 marine average, which is no difference a swimmer will ever feel.
Shift four weeks earlier and you trade 5.9°F of daytime warmth and a sea 3.5°F colder for a quieter town and roughly five times the wet days. Our May guide makes that case in full. Shift four weeks later and you buy 84.9°F afternoons and a near-dry 0.04 inches, paid for with the July crowd and with exactly the same water you already had in June.
Is June a good time to visit Albufeira?
For anyone whose vacation runs on daylight, driving and eating outside, June is a clear yes: 14 hours 45 minutes of it on the 15th, one wet day on average, and evenings that stay warm enough to sit out. For swimmers it is a qualified yes, because 66.9°F is genuine Atlantic water and someone in the family will say so. It is a no for travelers who wanted the Algarve half empty, since the town is already in its summer swing.
If the answer came out no, take May and accept the trade straight: 74.3°F days instead of 80.2, a 63.4°F sea instead of 66.9, and 3.8 wet days instead of 0.8, against a town that has not yet filled. Travelers chasing maximum heat should take July at 84.9°F, knowing the water will feel identical to June’s. Our twelve-month verdict for Portugal sets both against the rest of the country.
One thing June alone offers: the longest day of the year, 14 hours 45 minutes on the 15th, over a sea that has already finished warming.
The last word
Decide the car before the room. A June week here with wheels is four beaches, two towns and a boat morning; the same week without them is one very good beach and a lot of waiting for taxis. And one number we held back: on June 15 the sun clears the horizon at 6:10 am local. Set the alarm once and Falésia is yours before breakfast, at the coolest water the day will offer.

- Scope caveat: the thermometer is at Faro, at the eastern end of the Algarve, while Albufeira is central. Inland and high ground are colder and wetter than these figures.
- Threshold caveat: IPMA counts a wet day from 1 mm (0.04 inch), while US tables usually count from 0.10 inch, so the day counts are not interchangeable.
- We could not verify Albufeira occupancy, room rates, a municipal tourist tax rate, boat fares or beach parking charges, so we quote none.
