ALBUFEIRA · JANUARY · 37.1° N
An afternoon in Albufeira in January reaches 61.3°F, the dawn before it sits at 46.9°F, and the water offshore holds 62.0°F. The Old Town stairs belong to residents again, the strip above Praia da Oura runs on a winter timetable, and the clifftop path east toward Olhos de Água can be walked at one in the afternoon without hunting for shade.
What the month takes away is the beach day. Six days of an average January carry measurable rain, the light is gone by 5:39 pm, and swimming becomes a short, deliberate act rather than a plan. What it hands back is space, a rental car that can chase whichever end of the Algarve looks clear, and a town you can cross at noon.

ALBUFEIRA AT A GLANCE · JANUARY
January gives Albufeira back its Old Town and its cliff paths at 61.3°F, and takes away the beach: the sea reads 62.0°F and the daylight stops at 5:39 pm.
LOW SEASON · 6 RAIN DAYS · SEA 62.0°F · 9 H 57 MIN OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: the cliff path between Praia da Oura and Olhos de Água, an Old Town with room to move, and a car that goes wherever the sky is clear.
Think twice before: booking a January beach week: 62.0°F water and 46.9°F nights turn swimming into a two-minute decision.

Every figure here is dated and attributed, and the weather numbers come from one real thermometer rather than a model grid cell. The town itself, where to sleep and how it works in any month, lives on the Albufeira guide. The twelve-month view for the whole country is in best time to visit Portugal.
Albufeira weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days

The air normals below come from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, station 554 at Faro, a thermometer standing 5.0 m above sea level, averaged over 1991-2020: average high 61.3°F, average low 46.9°F, 1.94 inches of rain. Faro sits at the eastern end of the Algarve while Albufeira is central, so read these as a coastal reading. Inland and on high ground the month runs colder and far wetter than this.
Six days in an average January record at least 0.04 inch of rain, leaving roughly 25 dry days out of 31. Those counts use IPMA’s own thresholds rather than the 0.10-inch convention behind most American tables, so they do not swap one for one with figures you know from home. The monthly total, 1.94 inches, is a little over half of what December drops on the same coast.
Between the 61.3°F afternoon and the 46.9°F night sit 14.4 degrees, and you cross that gap twice a day. A fleece and a windproof layer cover the walk to breakfast and the walk back from dinner, a single long-sleeve layer covers two o’clock on a south-facing terrace, and swimwear covers about four minutes. Pack rain gear for six days out of thirty-one, as our packing guide sets out.
On January 15 the sun rises at 7:42 am and sets at 5:39 pm local time, mainland Portugal keeping UTC through the winter, for 9 hours 57 minutes of daylight. That shapes the day more than the temperature does. A cliff walk started after a late Portuguese lunch runs out of light before it runs out of path, and dinner at eight happens in full darkness.
Can you swim in Albufeira in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Albufeira averages 62.0°F in January, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. Read the caveat with the number: it is the mean of daily maxima, not a 24-hour mean, so the round-the-clock figure sits slightly below it. Set our 62.0°F beside a table built on daily means and ours will look a shade warm. Nobody will notice the difference going in.
Water at 62.0°F is a matter of minutes, not afternoons. Wetsuits are standard equipment at that temperature for anyone staying in longer than a quick immersion, and children give up faster than adults do. Getting out is the harder half in January, since the air on the sand rarely passes 61.3°F and does most of the shivering that the water started.
We found no wind or wave series for January off Albufeira, so we give no figures for swell or gusts. Boat trips along the cliffs run on sea state rather than on a calendar, and we could not verify January schedules for the operators serving the Benagil cave, so call ahead before you build a morning around them.
How busy is Albufeira in January? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
January sits in the trough of the Algarve year, after the New Year week and months before the spring school holidays. We found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for Albufeira, so we crown no month cheapest and quote no percentage. Low season here is a fact of the calendar, not a discount we measured, and the visible part of it is a beachfront that belongs to dog walkers by nine.
That changes the booking rhythm more than the budget. Treat this as editorial rather than data: with no holiday week in play, a hotel found two or three weeks out is a reasonable target, and a rental car booked at the same distance rarely runs into an empty lot in an Algarve winter. Flights are the exception, since transatlantic itineraries reach the coast through Lisbon or another European hub, as our flights guide explains.
We could not verify a municipal tourist tax for Albufeira, so no nightly amount appears here. Where such a tax applies in Portugal it is usually collected by the property at check-in rather than inside the online rate, so ask when you book and add it to your own total. The other budget lines are in what a week in Portugal costs.
One upgrade genuinely changes this month, and it is heating. Algarve buildings are designed around July, and a 46.9°F night in a room with a wall unit blowing lukewarm air is a different vacation from the same night with real heating. A heated indoor pool is the second line worth paying for, given that the sea reads 62.0°F. Sea view costs its usual premium and buys under ten hours of daylight to enjoy it.
Things to do in Albufeira in January: the Old Town, Praia dos Pescadores and the Falésia cliffs

January opens the walking that July closes. The clifftop trail running east from Praia da Oura toward Olhos de Água is a shadeless red-sand route, and 61.3°F is the temperature it was made for. The Old Town stairs, the fishermen’s beach and the marina walk all work at midday in January instead of demanding a seven o’clock start, which is the trade the month offers.
The target list is short and mostly free. Praia dos Pescadores sits directly under the Old Town, reached through the pedestrian tunnel off Rua 5 de Outubro. Praia da Oura and the cliff path above it start a short walk east, the ochre Falésia cliffs run on toward Olhos de Água and Vilamoura, and the marina sits west of town.
Nothing about the cliffs changes with the date. The air does. The same path that wants a hat and a dawn start in August becomes a one o’clock walk in January, and the sea below it drops from swimming water to a 62.0°F immersion. Beach parking, so crowded in summer that people circle for it, runs on winter volumes, and the coast road west toward Carvoeiro moves freely.
Every place named above is free to reach on foot, and the beaches charge nothing in any season. January adds elbow room to that: no rented sunbeds to step around on the Falésia sand, and a sunset at 5:39 pm you can watch from the Old Town cliff edge without booking a table first.
Albufeira in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs with the light. Start with coffee at eight, a quarter hour after the 7:42 am sunrise. From nine, take the Old Town stairs down to Praia dos Pescadores while the east-facing sand still has sun on it. Walk the cliff path toward Olhos de Água between eleven and one, the warmest stretch of a 61.3°F day. Lunch late and inland, out of the wind. Be back on the cliffs by half past four.
Day two takes the car west, for the headland at Ponta da Piedade and the walkable old town of Lagos in the afternoon. If the weather turns and you land on one of the month’s six wet days, swap the cliffs for Faro‘s walled quarter and its indoor hours, then give the clifftop day to the next clear morning. With 6.0 rain days in 31, the odds are with you.
Albufeira in January vs December and February
| Measure | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 62.8°F | 61.3°F | 62.6°F |
| Average low | 49.5°F | 46.9°F | 47.8°F |
| Precipitation | 3.54 in | 1.94 in | 1.65 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 7.0 | 6.0 | 5.4 |
| Sea surface | 63.4°F | 62.0°F | 61.3°F |
December takes the warmest afternoon of the three by a nose, 62.8°F against January’s 61.3°F and February’s 62.6°F, and pays for it with 3.54 inches of rain across 7.0 wet days. February is the driest of the set, 1.65 inches over 5.4 days, and holds the coldest water at 61.3°F. January owns the coldest nights, 46.9°F, which is 2.6 degrees under December’s. Air normals for all three come from the same Faro station and the same 1991-2020 period, the sea figures from the marine API.
Push the trip four weeks forward and you gain 0.29 inch less rain, half a wet day fewer and 1.3 degrees on the afternoon, while losing 0.7°F of sea. Pull it four weeks back to December and the water improves to 63.4°F, but the rain almost doubles to 3.54 inches and the New Year week stops counting as low season. Neither shift buys swimming weather.
Is January a good time to visit Albufeira?
For walkers, drivers and anyone whose week is built along the coast rather than in it, yes. For a beach week, no, and the 62.0°F sea settles that without a second opinion. Families with small children should also know that we could not verify which strip bars and restaurants close for the winter, so plan on a thinner list of open doors and check before you count on a specific place.
If the answer is no, February is the nearest correction rather than a distant one: 1.65 inches of rain, 5.4 wet days, a 62.6°F afternoon and a milder 47.8°F night. Real swimming weather belongs to a season we have not measured here, and the month-by-month case for it sits in the Portugal calendar.
Among the three winter months, only January pairs a near-December sea, 62.0°F against 63.4, with a little over half of December’s rainfall.
The last word
Book January for the coast rather than the water, insist on a room with real heating, and keep a car for the morning the sky clears. One number to carry: just under two days of an average January bring 0.39 inch of rain or more, and those are the two you leave unplanned. The other twenty-nine are yours between 7:42 am and 5:39 pm, on a cliff path you would be sharing with three hundred people in August.
