JAMAICA · KINGSTON · FEBRUARY
Kingston in February gives you afternoons at 82.7°F, nights at 70.6°F and about an inch of rain for the whole month. For a trip built around downtown streets, the forts of Port Royal and the monuments of National Heroes Park, that is enough dry weather to plan most days on foot without a backup.
You have already picked the city, so the open question is timing. February is the driest of the three months around it and has the coolest sea of the three. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust’s roll of about forty Kingston sites stays the same all year. If you are still weighing where to base a Jamaica vacation, start with our where-to-stay guide and the island-wide best time to visit.

Our air normals come from a model reanalysis rather than a station thermometer: Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 series for 1991-2020, computed for the grid cell at 17.997° N, 76.79° W over Kingston. By that measure February averages a high of 82.7°F (28.2°C) and a low of 70.6°F (21.4°C), with 1.03 inches of precipitation. An airport station can read differently from a grid cell, and we had no station series to set beside it.
In an average February, 2.5 days record at least 0.10 inch of rain, roughly one day in eleven. Across a four-night stay that works out to about 0.36 wet day. The 1991-2020 normals show no day at all reaching an inch, so a wet day in Kingston usually means a shower you step inside for, then carry on.
Afternoons run 12.1°F warmer than nights. Pack for the 82.7°F peak with breathable clothes, a hat and sunscreen, then add one light long-sleeved layer for the 70.6°F small hours and air-conditioned interiors. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest.
On February 15 Kingston gets about 11 hours 36 minutes of daylight, from a 6:33 a.m. sunrise to a 6:09 p.m. sunset, Jamaica time. Plan outdoor sightseeing to wrap up by 6 p.m. and book dinner as an after-dark outing.
Swimming in Kingston in February: sea temperature
Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Kingston at 81.2°F (27.3°C) in February, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a 24-hour average. A sea table built on 24-hour means will show a slightly lower number for the same water.
At 81.2°F the water is within a couple of degrees of the 82.7°F afternoon air, so getting in feels mild. Expect early-morning water a little under the headline figure. For beach days along this shore, our south coast guide picks up where the city stops.
We could not verify wind or swell data for Kingston in February, so we give no outlook for chop or waves. Check a marine forecast on the morning you plan to swim.
How busy is Kingston in February? Crowds and prices
We found no hotel occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Kingston, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. For nightly budgets across the island, our Jamaica trip cost guide gives the ranges we could stand behind.
Without rate data, we give no booking lead time in weeks. The weather side of the decision is easier: February’s normals carry 2.5 wet days and none of an inch or more, so dates are low-risk to lock in. Routes and flight times are in flights from the US, and passport rules in entry requirements.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Kingston hotels, so we give no percentage. Ask the property to quote the total with taxes and fees before you pay a deposit.
Spending more pays off in February on transport between sites. Port Royal’s forts and Rockfort, at Kingston’s eastern edge, sit apart from downtown, and a driver hired for the day links Fort Charles, Rockfort and the Ward Theatre in one loop. We found no fixed fare to quote. Our getting-around guide and airport transfers cover the options.
Things to do in Kingston in February

February’s low rain count lets a heritage day stay outdoors from start to finish. The month totals 1.03 inches across 28 days, while March already climbs to 1.49, so open-air forts and park monuments rarely need a rain plan.
The Jamaica National Heritage Trust lists about forty heritage sites for Kingston alone. At Port Royal, Fort Charles went up in the late 1650s as the first fort there, followed by Fort Carlisle, Fort Morgan and Fort Rocky. The town, once called “the richest and wickedest city in the world,” lost its original St. Peter’s Church in the 1692 earthquake. Rockfort was fortified in 1694 against a feared French invasion from Santo Domingo. National Heroes Park holds dated monuments, from Marcus Garvey (1964) to Nanny of the Maroons (dedicated October 14, 1999). We found no opening hours or admission fees for any of these on a stable official page.
None of these stones changes with the calendar. The air does: a February afternoon averages 82.7°F against 83.6°F in March, and the 70.6°F low is the coolest of the three months. Downtown, that keeps a late-morning walk comfortable from the Ward Theatre, a 1912 gift to the city from Colonel Charles Ward on St. William Grant Park, to Holy Trinity Cathedral (1911, Byzantine revival) and Liberty Hall, once the center of the Kingston division of Marcus Garvey’s UNIA.
We could not verify an admission price for any site, so we list nothing as free inside. From the street you can see the Jamaica Georgian front of 150 East Street, one of the few houses of its design left in the city, plus Kingston Railway Station, built on a grand scale along the same lines, and Wesley Methodist Church, erected in 1825. Trench Town Culture Yard, one of the Central Housing Authority houses of 1940 to 1949, rounds out a music day. Read our safety guide before you go.
Kingston in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts downtown by 8 a.m., when the air is still close to the 70.6°F low: the Ward Theatre and St. William Grant Park, then Kingston Parish Church, erected around 1911 on the original church’s foundations, and the 1907 Earthquake Monument. Late morning, move to National Heroes Park for the Norman Manley monument (dedicated September 16, 1972) and its neighbors. Give the 82.7°F early afternoon to the Institute of Jamaica, founded in 1879, and finish outdoors before the 6:09 p.m. sunset.
Day two goes to the forts: Fort Charles at Port Royal in the morning, Rockfort on the way back into town. If one of February’s 2.5 wet days lands on you, flip the order and take Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Institute first, then the forts after the shower. Confirm opening times locally, since we could not verify them. Longer routes that fold Kingston into the island are in our 7-day itinerary.

At sea it is the coolest of the three at 81.2°F, against 82.1°F in January and 81.7°F in March, per the Marine API’s 2015-2024 daily-maxima averages.

Shift four weeks later and you gain 0.9°F of afternoon heat and 0.5°F of sea, with rainfall up 0.46 inch and wet days at 3.4. Both months have their own guides: Kingston in January and Kingston in March.
Is February a good time to visit Kingston?
Yes, if the trip is about Kingston itself: forts, monuments, museums and downtown streets in the driest of the three months around it. Less so if the goal is a week of resort beach, a different stay that our Negril and Ocho Rios guides cover.
If February does not fit, pick January for the swim: the warmest sea of the three at 82.1°F, with rain only slightly up at 1.12 inches. For a first trip that strings Kingston together with other regions, our 10-day route sets the order.
Of January, February and March, February alone pairs the lowest rainfall, 1.03 inches, with the fewest wet days, 2.5.
The last word
Book February if dry streets matter more to you than one extra degree of sea, then give National Heroes Park an unhurried hour. Beyond Garvey and Manley, it holds memorials to Donald Sangster (1968), George William Gordon, Paul Bogle and Samuel Sharpe, and Bustamante’s monument was completed in October 1979.
